I am wondering which airways are used to the Near and Middle East. Are airplanes on the way to KWI, DXB or other destinations allowed to overfly Iraqi territory or is the Iraqi Airspace still completely closed? Which routes are used to fly to these destinations from Europe?

From the Gulf...
1. To Iran, and Turkey/East Europe and onwards.
2. To Saudi Arabia along the Iraq border into Jordan, up to Syria and then East Med or Turkey and then onwards.
3. To Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea and up through the Suez/Egypt, East Med and onwards...
MH 777s use #2 often!
Choice of #1,2,3 also depends on the relationship with the airline's country and the countries it overflies... A US airline can expect a route into the Gulf through #3, and maybe #2. There was a period where UK registered aircraft/airlines weren't allowed to fly over Syria... these kinds of things make Dispatchers busy...
