Airline Policies Regarding Pilot Facial Hair, Etc.

I've always noticed that it is really rare (if it happens at all) to see pilot with any sort of facial hair. Even sideburns. I've only once seen a pilot with long sideburns (and it looked really cool on him).

Is there some sort of policy for the airlines that pilots cannot keep any facial hair? Personally, I don't keep any, albeit I was considering having longer (clean) sideburns, but it would make sense if that isn't allowed since I have rarely seen pilots with any sort of facial hair whatsoever. I know Delta has some sort of rule, but I don't know if it's pretty much universal.

Plenty of British Airline pilots with beard, moustaches... same in much of Europe. I have sideburns (well, not too far, down to ear lobe level). It's just about maintaining a tidy appearance withing sensible confines.

It's not the military for goodness sake!

In the US, at least with Eagle, you can not have facial hair, I would guess its the same for AA.

Although regulations do not address the problem, it has been recognized that some amount of facial hair - beards - mustache - could possibly impede in the proper fit of oxygen masks, and create leaks... Some airlines do have that policy in their GOM regarding their crewmembers...

We are allowed to grow beards and moustaches, but only if you are on holiday, as that transitional look between a clean face and having a beard is not acceptable as it simply looks scruffy. This is stated clearly in our manuals, along with the suggestion, or reminder that as Skipper says, beards may impede the use of oxygen masks and crew must consider this before making the decision about growing facial hair.

I once heard that another possible problem is grease/oil in facial hair plus pure oxygen from an oxygen mask could create a fire hazard. Seems like it could happen but also seems far fetched....any truth to this?

Mustaches only with Delta...no goatees, sideburns, etc. Hair can't be touching the collar either.

I seem to have more confidence in a well-groomed pilot...and I think the pax see it too. A beird would just be scruffy and also an O2 prob.

AA policy is mustache only, and it may not extend beyond corners of mouth nor lower than upper lip. Sideburns must be neat & trim not to extend beyond bottom of ear. This is to avoid any potential O2 mask fit issues on any AMR aircraft--including walkaround bottles and PBE devices.

Kev, our department does not have specifics on dyed hair except to say that we must look smart and presentable at all times. Whether dark red hair falls into this is debatable. ISD - Inflight Services Department, that looks after the cabin crew have strict guidelines to say you may not have dyed hair, unless is only slight, and looks completeley natural - again, I am not sure many people have dark red hair naturally, but all this is up to the judgement of the individual and the managers.

Is stubble ok? That can't interfere with O2 masks can it? Very light, shadowy and neat trimmed facial hair can look very smart and tidy.

I know that facial hair could cause a mask to face seal problem, as I am a firefighter. But in our case we worry about heat and toxic fumes and smoke. If it were just an o2 issue perhaps it would seal tight enough.

I read that, and I guess that this may apply to longer haul flts (not sure if it applies regardless of flt length), that if one crew member leaves the cockpit that the crew member left flying has to wear an O2 mask until the other returns. Is this common pracitice?

Also, and this may be bit of a silly question..... I've noticed many flt crew members grabbing a bite to eat at the airport before a flt etc, but on longer haul flts, when perhaps the only offering is the inflight meal, do the flt crew eat different meals......visions of the movie 'Airplane' are popping into my head.

In the USA, if the plane is above FL250 if one pilot leaves his position (i.e. gets out of his seat) the other pilot must be wearing his O2 mask until such time as the first pilot returns to his position.

A requirement at AA. Many Captains invoke R.H.I.P. to "claim" their meal of choice. Personally I prefer R.H.I.R. and use the PF=choice option.

There is actually nothing in our policies about eating different meals, but most crew will sensibly do it anyway.

As for the O2 masks, we are required to be able to quickly don the masks when we are in the flightdeck alone, and this means that we are not to wear headsets. There is no need to wear the masks. The masks are stowed right next to the pilot anyway, so they are always at the ready.

I have seen plenty of Burt Reynolds wannabes on AirTran. They have that Black Mustache while chewing gum going over the plan. I must say, they sure know how to look professional. Just look like Burt Reynolds. (Not Norm MacDonald)  Smile

AirTran is the only airline I have seen pilots with Mustaches. AA is always clean cut.
