Flaps On Airbus A320/330/340

Hello,

Can someone please tell me why the flaps on these airplanes are so small compared for example to a 747 or 777. I know that flaps are needed to increase lift during Takeoff and landing. But how much lift can these "small" flaps produce?

The A340 is a big airplane, but from the pictures I have seen the flaps look very simple and small, and when you see a 747 you see the flaps soooo big.

I hope some one can answer.

I think it may have something to do with the fly-by-wire controls, and/or perhaps those winglets.
