A Question About Chautauqua Airlines

When Chautauqua Airlines moved to Indianapolis about 10 years ago I knew some of their pilots and crew members. They flew Saab 340s and J31s as US Air Express

as Delta Connection, American Connection and US Airways Express and I know no one there. My question is this, do the flight crews switch from one line to another or do they stay with one? Such as, do crews always fly US Airways Express (or pick one of the others) or do they bid for any of the three lines? The three Embraer aircraft they fly have 98% commonality http://www.flychautauqua.com so I am sure the pilots are typed for all three aircraft.

I beleive that the bases are all airline specific, so a a pilot based in MCO would only fly DL connection. I know there are Chautauqua pilots on the board, hopefuly they can shed some light.

Another question about Chautauqua/Republic. Where is there maintenance base or bases? I heard it was at SDF but their headquarters is at IND.

I am also curious about the corporate relationships Chautauqua has with Republic and Wexford Capital Management. As I understand it, Chautauqua and Republic are two separate corporations that are both headquartered here in Indy but are both wholly owned by Wexford Capital Management in Connecticut. Is that correct? For those wondering why I am asking is my brother is applying for a job there.

Wexford Group has owned Chautauqua Airlines for around 10 years or so. About 4 or 5 years ago Wexford purchased Shuttle America and transferred Chautauqua's Saab 340 over to Shuttle when CHQ started to get their Embraer jets. About 2 years ago Wexford formed Republic Airlines (in name only) in preparation of them getting the Embraer 170's in order to get around contracts with pilot groups and seat limitations. Several moths back, Republic 'buys' Shuttle America in order to get their operating certificate and there you have it...Two airlines from three...!!

As for the pilot question.. I was told by a CHQ Capt that they fly in a company uniform and not one of the airline they are flying in. When Line bids come out, the employee just bids the Line they want to fly that month, and that is the routes they fly.... be it American Connection, Delta Connection or USAirways Express.

Wexford Capital Leasing is the financial backing for Republic Holdings Company. Under the Holding company are Chautauqua Airlines, Republic Airlines, Shuttle America.

Chautauqua airlines operates ERJ 145's for US Airways Express. They operate ERJ 135's and 145's for Delta Connection. They operate ERJ 145's (and now a 135 or two) for United Express. They also operate ERJ 145's and 140's for American Connection out of St. Louis.

Republic Airlines (which is still waiting on it's certification to go through) will operate the EMB 170's that are coming over from Mid Atlantic, for US Airways Express.

Shuttle America has recently been purchased by Republic Holdings. They are going to operate all of the EMB 170's for United Express and Delta Connection.
They still operate some SAAB 340's for United Express out of IAD, but those will be going away and the pilots trained for the EMB 170's.

The maintenance bases are IND and SDF.

There is one master seniority list for pilots for all 3 companies (well, there will be once the Shuttle America pilots are integrated). Bidding is done on a monthly basis and can include trips on any of the carriers. You won't generally change carrier on a trip, but can certainly fly different carriers throughout the month. Having said that, only the STL based guys and gals fly the AA part. A couple of the other bases will be restricted for the most part to flying the carriers that their planes fly into. (ex. GSO only does US and UA)

I have heard that the EMB 170 pilots will either do Shuttle flying or Republic flying, but not both.

- I thought RP was already flying the 170s as United Express? At least the UAX E170s I saw at IND not too long ago I believe had RP registrations. BTW, those UAX 170s look real nice in person and up close.

The media and CHQ press releases seemed to portray the acquisition of the Shuttle America assets and operating certificate by purchase.

I'm guessing that they were both previously just financially backed by Wexford, but I'm not sure on where all the operating revenue would be spread out to.

Republic Holdings is now a publicly traded company, so perhaps their ties with Wexford have lessened.

The intention was originally to operate the 170's on the Republic cert. but the delay allowed them to get the Shuttle cert. and they decided to put them on that one so they didn't have to pay the fines to AA any longer than needed.

RP on the reg's of the planes you saw are because of the Republic Holdings company. Even the newer 145's operated by CHQ have RP in the registration numbers.
