Hi there,

This is my first ever post in Tech/Ops  Smile

Anyway, something that stuck me when spotting. The ERJ engines make a very strange water splashing and a running hairdryer kind of sound!

Could someone explain to me what is happening and why it does this?

Thanks chaps  Big thumbs up

Regards,

Justin  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

LOL! Not wishing to badmouth our own products here but at MAN I heard an AE3007 powered BA EMB145 taxi past and I could have sworn I was hearing someone rattle a bucket of bolts! What an attrocious din!

Now the sound of a Trent 500... or better still a Trent 900 at full chat...Mmmmm! Music to my ears!

Cheers!

Rez, funny you should say that, but that's where me and MYT332 noticed it.. At MAN and it was a nasty sounding p.o.s.  Laugh out loud

Could someone explain to me what is happening and why it does this?

Quoting myself here  Wow!!!! Basically mate, that's a silly question. EMB's with AE3007's all sound like a washing machine with nuts and bolts getting tossed about in the drum  Big thumbs up

As for the "hairdryer: noise it sorta sounds like your hearing the packs cycling on and off. They tend to be pretty loud (especially when both are on) outside.
As for the "Water Splashing' sound that sound more like the bleeds being cycled, espcially when doing the anti-ice/bleed check that is done (with my company) the first flight of the morning when iceing is expected.

I love those ERJs but I too can't help but feel a little uneasy when I hear this weird noise so I was hoping someone could answer the question.

In any case, I guess its just incidental noise (nothing to do with the 145s performance, judging by the thousands that are flying all over the world)

I've never noticed the strange noises, but what you hear could be attributed to the engine's Compressor Variable Geometry vanes installed on the first five stages of the engine. These are hydraulically powered stators controlled by the engine's Full Authority Digital Electronic Control (FADEC) that automatically twist to optimize airflow at various power settings. The main purpose of the CVG vanes is to prevent compressor stalls, but they also increase engine efficiency.

I always thought that it sounded like somebody chucked in a lot of coffee beans into the engine, myself.

It took me some time being around the RJ's at work this week, but I think I have the 'mystery' noise figured out. I only hear the noise when the aircraft is taxing from my left to my right, and with that in mind....and with the APU Intake on the RH side, I think it comes actually from noise from the the APU Intake being muttled from the engine exhaust........Kind of muttled sound.
