Saab 340 Door Operation

For some reason I am interested as into how SAAB 340 main cabin doors are operated. Do they utilize the same lock and hinge mechanism as the 777s? Are they fairly easy to operate as compared to larger jet doors? Also, where is the handle located? Is it operated in a vertical position or horizontal? Oh... and for those of you who usually waste ur time throwing a fit wondering why im interested in doors (Which It is stupid I admit, but its just kinda a side fastenation) don't, cause its just a waste of time... thanks all for any info! Greatly appriciated!

Find a picture of them? They work just as you'd think. If I'm not mixing the types up, pull the handles to get a grip, turn it. Open.

The Saabs door is very basic. It operates very closely to the 777/ Airbus type door. Except there is no form of mechanical assist like the 777 (the SF3 door is very light door). Also on the top of the hinge arm is a small spring loaded hook that lock into a latch on the exterior to operate as a gust lock.
The handle is located on the center of the door and from the insde rotates clockwise to open the door (the opposite from the outside and it's located on the lower right side of the door). It's similar to most Boeing a/c (excluding 767).
As a bonus, the stairs are stowed, folded in half, to the right of the door behind the fa/s right shoulder. The fa's jumpseat either sides into the aisle (or hinges it depends on the model) and by releasing a latch on the floor the stairs slide out of it storage space until it locks directly in front of the door. Then you release a catch on the middle of the stairs which unfolds them and lowers them to the ground (with a little shove and step on the top step to make sure it locks in the down postion). To store the stairs you push with your foot a button on the top of the stair to break them in half and a spring move them up towards the door. Once close to the door you pull on a assist handle to lock them up, press a latch on the floor, and slide them back to the stowed postion.

I hope that clear, it's a lot easier to show someone how it's done than writing it out.

Didn't you ask this exact same question a few months ago....???? Maybe it was not you.....

Anyway, actually the inner workings of the door are VERY simple. It works just like Viflyer has said above. It's actually an outward opening plug door....pretty cool. When you turn the handle to open, the door also shifts upward clearing the airframe and fittings, and then pushes fully open.

Nope, I haven't asked about saabs... I think the last door post I made was about 3 or 4 Months ago and I think it was on EMBs... But not sure! So the door rised up of it's hinge a little? Is it really easy to push open? Does anyone have any pictures???

It's very easy to operate....

I've worked on Saab 340's for almost 10yrs..... and the doors are very well designed. The Saabs door is actually a composite core and weighs almost nothing.

The cargo door OTOH has a nasty habit of getting a bit loose after a few years. This means that as you move around in the cargo hold, the door might slide back down a bit. Cap on, hearing protectors on, chances are you won’t notice. Came close to breaking my neck on that one once, jumping out of the cargo hold and diving head first into the door.

FredT, either that or they become REALLY slow. We usually have to put our whole weight on the rope in order to close them. They're terrible!

If you need to pull that hard on the cargo door rope, the door cable is most likely off the rollers and could come crashing down on you if the cable breaks.....Be careful..

I've had to change a few of those cables and they really stink with the aft lav. You have to take EVERYTHING out to get the job done.

I completely agree with you. We have a few aircraft in our fleet at C8 that you literally have to grab the handle, rotate it upward, and hang on the top half with both hands and much of your body weight to close; seem worse when it is cold outside.

EMBQA,

Is it really dangerous to have doors like this floating around? Should the crew write it up? I've always considered it just an annoyance. Are you at the repair station in BNA that had a/c 314 down there last month? I think there have been a few a/c down there, come to think of it. I take it you guys do a lot of EMB work as well? Our Mx guys are always talking about how the experienced Saab techs down there are working on the EMBs and the work on our Saabs is slowed down.

Thats a loaded question. I would just say.....Someone in MX should take a look at it if the door doesn't operate normally. You guys are lucky that if you do need to work on the cargo door system, you have forward lav's which make it MUCH easier to work on. We had aft lavs in our Saabs, and you needed to remove the entire lav unit to work on a broken cargo door cable. It takes 5 minutes to change a cable, 2 hours just to get to it.

314.....CE..? Yes, in fact it left over the weekend and 315 just showed up. We have several really good Saab 340 guys that know the airplane very well. I have almost 8 yrs on the SF340, and if you name it on the aircraft...I've done it at least twice.

Hi guys.

Here's my contribution to this thread.

The first photo clearly shows how the Saab 340's door is raised up apon opening, and that it's a plug door with a lower & wider panel on the inside surface .
