747 Firefighter & Effects On Flt Characteristics

There is a large thread on one of the other boards about the politics of using the 747 as a firebomber, that, in this case it turned into an A vs I (Ilyushin) war, it got me thinking......

What are the effects of using such a large aircraft in this role on how it handles, does losing such a large amount of weight in such a short period of time have a massive effect on how the aircraft handles, and if so how do they deal with this.
