I've never been in a 737 but I think and I could be wrong, it might be the engines and the compressors with the air going through.
I'm sure someone can shed some more light on this subject!

Sometimes the cabin doors can be quite leaky and will make a squealing sound until the door seals have sufficient differential pressure to seal them....

Ummmm....What kindo of the B737 are u talking about??
B737-100/200 - Jt8d engines
B737-300/400/500 - Cfm56-3's
B737-Next Generation - Cfm56-7's
I'd be willing to guess you were the B737-100/200. I've never heard the other 737s squeal during takeoff.

Must be leaking pressure around all those old doors... Too bad they don't have plug doors like the A320 does. On the -20, when you close the door, you are sure it has sealed, you don't have to wait until the door starts rattling on climbout to find out it hasn't sealed.

Its not the doors. I've been by the doors and this sound is much much louder.
Kona: 737 doors are true plugs. They are bigger than the whole that they fit through. By opening the door, the size changes which allows it to swing outward.
CdfMXTech: I've heard it on 737-300s and 737-500s. I've never flown on a -400 or an NG. Its been years since I last was on a -200.

The past few trips where I've heard this sound was up front. I've been in row 1, row 2, and row 3. Other than that I've been in the back row. The sound is not there in the back.
Also, each time that I've noticed the sound I've been on the right side of the plane. Once I sat in 2A and I didn't recall hearing that sound.

high pitched squealing sounds in aircraft are often due to air being squeezed through the passenger vents (i.e. those things that blow air on your face). Often someone's vent is adjusted to only leave a tiny hole which causes the air to whistle through. as air pressure varies throughout the flight, throttling back the engines after initial climb may have turned the whistling off.
I sat through a 2 hour flight once with an incredible high pitched whistle that was driving me absolutely nuts and was due to this (as i noticed when the woman in front of me reached up to change the vent and the sound ended, to all of our relief).

Kona,
You look for the most insignificant things to bring against the 737. You make no sense when you make statements like
<<"On the -20, when you close the door, you are sure it has sealed, you don't have to wait until the door starts rattling on climbout to find out it hasn't sealed.">>
That shows a total lack of knowledge. Actually Kona, the 737NG has new redesigned doors, and I have never heard of a 737 or any airliner for that matter finding out they havent closed their doors completely inflight.

Ok i think i get what ILUV767 is talking about.
I have heard a funny rythmic "bell" like sound on the 3 or so 737-400 flights i have been on. This sound usually happened when there was a noticeable change in engine power.

JUST THROWING THIS OUT FOR CONSUMPTION BUT HAVE HAD GRIPES FROM FLIGHT ATTENDANTS AND DEADHEAD CREWS SAYING THEY HEARD A SQUEAL "NOT THE R1 OR L1 DOOR TYPE" .THROUGH PROCESS OF ELIMINATION FOUND PROBLEM IN THE GALLEY OVERBOARD VENT ASSEMBLY THAT LEADS TO THE VENT JUST OVER AND AFT OF THE L1 DOOR. WE CHANGED OUT THE DUCT ASSLY AND GRIPE DID NOT REPEAT. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER "SOUNDS LIKE" WRITEUP VERY HARD TO GET THE FULL PICTURE IF YOU AREN'T THERE TO EXPERIENCE IT.

SORRY FOLKS JUST READ MY REPLY BACK AND REALIZED THAT THE OVERBOARD VENT FOR THE GALLEY IS ABOVE THE R1 DOOR. REMEMBER I'M JUST A MECHANIC/TECHNICIAN---HARD TO KEEP THAT RIGHT FROM LEFT THING STRAIGHT!
