As far as I could find on the subject buried in the archives, nothing really got in depth for a good comparision.
Some of the radars that we use can paint intensity levels, some can't- just outlines.
My question:
How advanced is A/C wx radar systems? To narrow it down a bit, What is the typical range you can select or use for best picture? Are there different modes? and is there any problem with ground clutter or interference from other radar units (from other a/c or ground based radar)?
Thanks,

Radar technology ranges vastly by aircraft type and age. I cut my teeth on the APN-159 Search and Weather Radar as used in the C-130. It was a very antiquated system with old scopes and not much definition, but it got the job done. Color Weather radar on semi-modern aircraft is actually pretty good. With ranges up in the 300nm, different colors for different rates of rainfall/intensity. They come with Sensitivity Time Control (STC) which reduces clutter, the ability to see beyond storms to the other side (I believe its called ISO ECHO), and ground mapping modes.
I have seen radar sometimes pick up radar from other aircraft, but it only appears in faint streaks across the scope. Because aircraft radar (at least currently) is half-plex, if it is transmitting, it won't pick up radar from another aircraft that is transmitting as well.
