When you fly for a major (or any airline that flies more than one type), how do you pick what kind of a/c you will fly? Do you pick or is it assigned?

The airline assigns it based on seniority, and demand for a certain aircraft I believe. New hires are First Officers, and are usually assigned to smaller jets, such as the 737, A318/319/320/321, MD-80/DC-9, etc. As they gain seniority with the airline they can either move up to larger aircraft and/or become a Captain. This is not how it is with all airlines, mind you, just some.

when you enter in an airline, you enter as a F/O flying in the smallest aircraft, doesn't mater if it's a jet or an turboprop (Eample: Fokker 50), then when you are ready to move over you become the F/O of another aircraft bigger than the "Fokker" (Ex. MD 83), after that you become a F/O of a bigger aircraft (Ex. 757) an then later you enter to a bigger one (Ex. 767) then when you finish the F/O trip you enter as the Capitan of the same Fokker 50, then later to be the Cap. Of the MD 83, then later to the 757 and finally to the 767 that is the higher rank (This examples are of Avianca method)

Our newly hired F/O's get to nominate a first choice and second choice of aircraft that they would like to start on. However, it's the company's decision as to whether or not they get it. New F/O's are assigned only to B737-8/9, A300-600 or A330 A/C.

As for upgrading to Captain, all new Captains will start on either the B737-8/9 or A300-600 and the eventually progress to either A330, MD-11, B777 or B744.

With the US majors, it's how FutureUALpilot said, all by hire date. Starting out can be a few different, smaller airframes- using DL as an example. Some guys in the new hire classes were going B727FE (back when it was there), B737 F/O, and MD-88 F/O. I *have* heard of some guys who even got to go to the 757 as a newhire...pretty rare. Some guys elect to become F/Os on the largest a/c they can get to...I recently met an MD-88 Capt who has been with the company for 15 years, never saw the left seat till now, as he liked being senior and flying the 767. Othertimes, there'll be a sprint to the left seat. When Delta Express was around, it offered the left seat to guys after 18-ish months, which was an extreme exception to the norm of +-10 years on the 88 and regular 737.

Again, senority controls everything....if all the top guys wanted to fly the 737, they certainly could, leaving the 777 spots open...just for example  Big grin The trick I learned was to get into the airlines as fast as you can, and get as many people under you as possible....trying to do just that  Smile

Say that you're f/o on a 777 for 5 yrs and have been with the company for 15 yrs all together and decide that you want to become captain, could you start as captain on the 777 or would you have to go back down to 737s and MD-80s?

Depending on demand and how much seniority you have, Im thinking you'd go back to the 737/MD80s as a Capt. If you went from a 777 F/O to a 777 Capt., youd be cutting in front of (pardon the expression) a lot of pilots who have more seniority than you...guys/gals with 20-30yrs. of flying with the airline who should be next in line for a left seat in the 777.

For Korean Air, what Futureualpilot said also applies. Guys who have been a F/O on a 777 for 5 years and have other aircraft time also will still start off as a Captain on a 737 or A300. Seniority (coupled with experience) determines the size of the aircraft you'll fly.

A Second Officer with Singapore Airlines will be posted to whichever Fleet requires crew no matter the Aircraft Type.

When selected for Command Training (upgrade to Captain)it could be on any Fleet except the A340-500 as the training program is based on sectors flown so it would take years to complete on the A340.

As MATURRO727 stated above at AV or MM you start as a co-pilot for the smallest aircraft type, and after a minimum of 5000 hours, and having been through all the types in the fleet your turn will come to start over again as a captain of the smallest type

I know that new hires with a lot of airlines in the U.S. (not sure if it's all of them) do it by your Social Security number. So in your "class," the guy with the lowest first digit of the last 4 numbers of his AB / Sinchonri (K-16) (SSN / RKSM), South Korea">SSN gets first dibs of whats available.

It depends on the airline and its particular situation and sometimes believe it or not in the very same laws of market...

Some airlines, as stated above will give you an option; nevertheless that hardly happens, at least on this side of the Ocean. Upon a variety of aircraft, those with more hours will get a bigger or more complex aircraft. The ones with the minimum commercial hours -if they are lucky enough to get hired or have the right strings at least- will spend a few years in the right seat of a turboprop or in the smallest, sometimes oldest type (i.e. a brand new EMB145 will be flown by those with more experience or seniority than those flying lets say... a 737-200).

In my country.... The main airlines work with a very powerful Pilot's Union. Once the recently graduated pilots affiliates to the Union and enlist themselves in the airline of their choice, then wait SEVERAL months if not years to receive a "Letter" from the Union to participate in an admission test. If you do well and get admitted to the airline, you will go to the right seat of the smallest of their aircraft.

In example... If joined AeroMexico; as of now, the career path should be like this:
First Officer Saab340 (AeroLitoral)
First Officer EMB145
Captain Saab340
Captain EMB145
First Officer MD80 (AeroMexico)
First Officer 757/767
First Officer 737-700
Captain MD80
Captain 757/767
Captain 737-700.

Now... Remember what I said about the "market laws"? Here is why...

In many places in America, including the US, Mexico, Argentina and many other countries, the smaller non-unionized airlines will hire pilots if they hold the type certificate of the airliners they use! The airlines no longer have to worry about giving expensive "initial" training. As there are lots and lots of pilots without a job, the airlines are in position to choose and be very selective among a large quantity of candidates. The better prepared, the ones with the appropriate rating will surely get the job and that is why more and more aviators are paying their own independent type rating training (happens a lot in Executive/general aviation and with Boeing 727/737-200-300) in order to be eligible.

Our airline is run similar to how Ejazz mentions it is in SQ. New joining Second Officers will get assigned to either the A340 or the 744. When coming up to their upgrade to JFO they will get assigned either 777 or A330 (It is very possible to go from 744 to A330 and A340 to 777). When coming up for command, pilots can submit their preference and they will be assigned a slot on a certain fleet. If they do not get their preference they can choose to wait for a more preferable slot.
