Engines On Same Family Aircraft

This is about engines on the A320 and B737NG families. Do all variants have the same engine in terms of power which is derated on the smaller models? Example same engine on A320 and A319 which is derated on the A319? Does "derated" only involve paperwork and some onboard computer software or are there actual physical mechanical differences too?
