Are These Antennas Beside The Runway?

Hi guys.

In this photo you can see many thin red antenna like objects on red stands to the left of the runway. They appear to be about 2 or 3 feet high and are in the foreground of the photo, ahead of the JAL MD-11 that's taking off.

Are these red objects antennas? If they are, what are they for?

I've never seen objects like this beside a runway before. I've only ever seen runway visual range (RVR) sensors, PAPI & VASI lights, and ILS Glideslope antennas (which are up on a tower) beside a runway.

I`m not sure what those are, but that is one nice picture! Good framing, focus, very sharp.

My wild guess is that they're to keep birds away. There appears to be metalic streamers between them, which are effective at keeping birds away from blurberry bushes. Thats just a completely wild guess, though, I'd be interested to know what other think, or better yet, know.

Could they have something to do with detecting wind shear?

This is your captain speaking. I’ve turned off the no-smokin’ sign. Hell, if the plane is smokin' why can't you?

Well since no one else knows.... I'm going to preface this by saying i have no clue, but will put my guess into the hat as glideslope transmitters?

I am guessing Gulideslope antenni also.

But that is just a guess. They seem to be in the right place for it.

They could also be the mounting rails for a PAPI but I don't see any lamps on them.

Glideslope transmitters are on poles, definitely...

But to me it looks like a T-VASI.. Somebody from Zurich should state, if Zurich has a T-VASI or a PAPI-system!

My vote goes to VASIs or rails for them. Glideslope antennae look wildly different, at least those I've seen during my job in airport construction. Glideslopes definitely are on poles.

Here is another picture, I searched the 465 pictures this photographer took, and found only one that shows the exact same place!!! Not worth all the time I wasted!!!

There were some similar pics , around 6, that are shot from the same place but seem to be centered on an area slightly aft of these objects, and there are still some other strange things pointing up of the ground.

This is the best one of those.

Thats a good question. They don't appear to be approach slope lights of anykind, but they do look very similar to the "Runway Visual Range" array used at many airports.

Just a thought.
