Does anyone know why Airbus chose to go with the A320 family style winglets on the A380 instead of the A330/A340 style?

Good question AerLingus. I like how Airbus, at least on the A310 and A300 possibly, called then wingtip fences.

Airbus will have done a whole load of wind tunnel tests with each type of winglet configuration, maybe even some new, not before seen designs. The A320 style winglets obviously came out most efficent for the A380 wing, and thus were chosen to be the type fitted.

Wingtip fences are relatively small devices just to cut a little bit of wingtip drag.

A well designed wing does not need a full winglet, which is why the 777 never had one until a little more lift was needed for the extremely-high-MTOW versions. Same with the 767, only the heavy -400ER needs the extra help.

The full winglets were added to the 330 and 340 to help the 340 get off the ground after the SuperFan was cancelled.

Wingtip fences aren't very heavy. Winglets are.

Raked wingtips increase span. The airports put their foot down at 80m span (and 80m length) The A380 has a 79.8m span so raked wingtips would have been unacceptable for gate and taxiway clearance.

Are there any patent issues with wingtip treatments? Specifically, I was wondering if the raked wingtip is protected by a Boeing patent.
