Change In Basic Design - Commercial Aviation

One of my friend always discusses that there is no change in basic design in aviation industry since mid 50s - except Concorde which was a change in speed.

According to our discussion the design is almost as same as of B707 and still we have the same speed. Definitely there is incredible increase in safety, other equipments to help pilots and passenger but basics are the same.

Probably in FLIGHT magazine of 1967 that McDonnell Douglas designed a spacecraft type aircraft that would have speed 17,000 mile an hour and estimated flight time between United States and SYD would be 17 minutes (If I remembered correctly), second article again in FLIGHT magazine where an egg shaped aircraft was designed capable of vertical Take off and Landing ( A huge plane, very beautiful, propellers on four corners)

So, what do you think would there be any change in basic design or configuration in near future. In my opinion probably this type of change will not occur in next 30 - 50 years.

  • Basic structural design will remain the same

  • Speed will remain the same

  • Because due to advancement in technology, the requirement of very high speed is not worth as compared to investment required to build such aircraft.

    I basically agree with you. I really thought that we would see a blended wing body or flying wing commercial aircraft by now. But apparently the effeciency in either case does not merit the additional development and certification costs.


    I only look to the defense contractors to produce anything interesting in the next several years. That is where the money is, and where you can push the design envelope. Interestingly, I also think there is a lot more cool design stuff going on at the universities than in industry now.

    I don't know about you but I was really let down that the Sonic Cruiser died. What a good looking plane, and it was exciting. This 7E7 stuff is about as exciting as a rock. Same with the A380. Maybe if we are lucky, we will see a sonic business jet in the next 15 years, but I am not holding my breath.
