I was wondering if any of you would know about this...I have a powerchair, looking to fly PHL-IND, but the only direct outbound flight is on a CRJ.

Ive seen the CRJ's hold from afar, and cant see this thing ever fitting, but I figured I'd ask the guys who load em every day.

Rough dimensions:

35" length
28" width
44" tall

~275lbs

Call the airline you might be flying. They can give you all the REAL answers. I know there are restrictions on the battery...!! But you might get away if its placed in an approved travel case.

Battery is airline approved...also have doctors notes stating so.

Airline is USAirways...I can't find a number to call where I can speak to a human...Anyway, the guys who actually handle this stuff would know better than any svc. rep.

My other choice is PHL-ORD-IND-ORD-PHL non-rev on AA Super 80s; I would LOVE to do all that flying, but its a pain in the ass being disabled.

I just called and talked to a human. You'll have to call the reservations people or send an email from the US Airways website yourself. Your doctor's note is only going to get you through security. It's up to the aircraft owner whether they take the chair and the DOT about the battery. The chair can be made to fit but it will depend on the policy concerning baggage placement and securing the chair to prevent damage.
In short, on a CRJ it isn't too promising but it is possible.

Quite frankly, the assistive device has to be taken. The airline has no choice. Little details like not fitting were irrelevant to the DoT when they promulgated their ADA-based regulations.

They are real backbreakers -- especially at the smaller outstations where only a couple people work a flight.

That said, we're lucky with the Saab. Darn near anything will fit in there.

let me get back to you on this, but i think that it can fit. i just can't guarantee this for the PHL guys. i have pulled a few chairs out of CRJs thus far. is the battery a solid cell or a wet cell? it will most likely need to be tilted to get throught the bin door. that's why i'm asking what kind of battery it is. i will get the number that you need to call tommorow when i'm at work and get back to you definately.

also, a good idea it to help the agents disasemble and then reasemble, if need be, the chair. it saves our agravation and wear and tear on the chair itself.

look for a response to this post late tommorow night or very early friday morning. i'm working till 2200 and will post the answer as soon as i get home. when is your flight? again, no promises but i think it should work...

Hey, thanks Cancidas, and no hurry at all...Looking to leave August 28.

The battery is a sealed gel cell deep cycle...It has FAA approval tags on the batteries. I've flown AA with them before...they were always inspected, but never a problem.

I honestly cannot dissasemble this sucker...not easily anyway. Plus it's brand new ($22,535) and....I'm starting to think I'm not even gonna risk it on any RJ even if they say yes but we'll see.

i checked my training manual and you don't need to give any advanced notice for the chair. sorry, i was thinking something else. the fact that the battery is a dry-cell only makes it easier for the ramp guys. we can load the chair into the bin without removing the battery. now, the chair will need to be tilted to get it into the bin. sorry, the cargo door is not 4' tall. i think it should fit and don't forsee any problems. good luck, and let me know how it goes for you.

I have seen a variety of electric chairs and scooters accomadated the CRJ. The passenger is placed in a regular seat and the chair is stowed in the cargo bin. Based on the measurements you provided, I imagine the rampers would have to load the chair on its side or back due the cargo door size, then stand it upright in the cargo bin. Good luck.
