Some friends told me that President Bush landed at MKG today on one of the 747s. The longest runway there is 6501 feet. I was under the impression that a 747 needed a much longer runway than this. How'd they manage?

It was still called Air Force One, but it was one of the 757s in the presidential fleet (VC-32?).

A 747 landed here (empty) and took off loaded.
LGTS / SKG runways: just less than 7,000ft.

I personally know of a 747 going nonstop MZJ - DUS in 1993. That a 5800 footer. The dustcloud was a thing to see.

I have been on a 747-100 that took off of a 7,300 ft runway, with full passengers and luggage for a 3 hour flight. The temperature was about 85 degrees and the field elevation was 1,300 ft.

Keep in mind the 747 AF-1 only has seats for about 80 people, and they don't carry much luggage. Also a small fuel load may have been on board.
