Looking For Flight School Recommendations In CT/NY

Ok, so maybe it's time. I'm not getting any younger and I realize being an A.nutter and Flight Simmer is not a replacement for real flying with real physics. I've wanted to be a pilot since I was a teen. Not necessarily a jet pilot, just someone who could take to the air.

I live about 25 minutes from HPN in the SW tip of Connecticut. I've been Googling a bit, and American Flyers has a school at HPN.

Anyone have any info on this school, or other schools in the area?

Also, do you have any ballpark figures for cost? I'm quite happy in my current career so I would be looking at single piston engine PPL and maybe an Instrument Rating.

I don't know whether I'm going to go through with this but if I don't take the first step, I'm never going to begin the journey.

a FAA PPL costs an average of 3500 - 5000 dollars, depending on how often you fly, where you fly and how fast a learner you are.

You'll probably want to almost double those numbers for HPN or anywhere else near NYC. You need a minimum of 40 hours by FAA rules, most people need more like 60-70, some even more than that... you're not going to find an airplane and instructor for less than $150/hour in that part of the world. It's a large and busy airport so you are going to have quite a lot of taxi time on each lesson, and it's in some of the busiest and most complex airspace in the world, so you are going to have lots to learn.

There are a number of HPN based students/pilots post regularly on studentpilot.com

I guess an advantage of learning to fly in the NYC area is something like learning to drive in a big city as opposed to the countryside. Your skills are more advanced from the beginning.

Wow, I didn't know the difference within the U.S was that big. A dual hour for me was 102 dollars and 67 dollars when I went solo.

So Starlion, pack a tent a drive to the rural Northwest and you'll save a buck or two.  Big thumbs up

I've trained with American Flyer's in California, and although I'm not a fan of their training method (It seemed a bit too impersonal to me... They're happy to take your money, rush you thru and off to your checkride. I was just shell-shocked that my checkride was scheduled so soon after I started flying with them - about 3 weeks from start to finish.)

However, they do a thorough and good job of getting you thru the wickets of getting your pilot certificate.

Looking at the AOPA website, it does look like there are a few other flight schools in HPN. (Don't know anything about them though)

Wings Air (rotary wing training only)
Panorama Flight Service, Inc.
Westair & Westchester Aeronautical Corp.

The only problem I can see with American Flyers is that after you're done with training and you have your private pilot certificate, they're really not set up to rent you aircraft to get that $100 hamburger. So you'll need to find an FBO or flying club that you can rent from to exercise that pilot certificate you earned or, if you have the resources, buy your own aircraft.

Anyone know of any other airports with flight schools in the vicinity? I think there is one in Westport. Sikorsky Memorial or something.

if you're on long island i reccommend Nassau Flyers (NFI) at FRG. they've got pretty much the best instruction around. the planes are 1970 N model 172s (what i normally fly) but you learn to fly the plane and not to play with the GPS all the time. the problem is that FRG sucks for flying. traffic there can realy get annoying year round. it's because of that that i recommend ISP for training. it's a class C airport as well.

I'm not sure how close any of these would be from you. Again, I got these from the AOPA website, don't know anything about them.

You might want to do a $49 Intro flight to see if you like it. (I'm pretty sure you would though.)

When you do your cross-country solos, you might want to make one of the cross countries to Norwood Massachusetts (OWD). They've got a pretty good pilot shop that's got lots of pilot goodies you can max out your credit card with. Ask to park at the control tower and then walk across the street.
