This is part 2 for this trip report:

Ultra Long Haul YYZ-HKG Air Canada A345 Pics+vids (by MEL Sep 20 2006 in Trip Reports)

Routing:
Osaka-Seoul Korean Air 747-400 HL7482
Seoul-Vancouver Air Canada 767-300 C-FMWU
Vancouver-Calgary Air Canada A319 C-FZUL
Calgary-Winnipeg Air Canada Jazz CRJ-705 C-FKJZ

Routing/Flight No: Osaka Kansai-Seoul Incheon KE722 Seat 40A
Aircraft: KOREAN AIR 747-400 HL7482
Load Factor: 60 Percent
Cruise Level: FL390
Flight Duration: 1hour 12mins
Pushback/Rotation/Touchdown: 09:40 / 09:56 / 11:08

There were several different flights I could take back to North America. I could have waited until later in the afternoon to fly 1 of the 2 Osaka-Vancouver Air Canada 763 flights, I could have flown United's 777 to Chicago, or JALs 744 flight to Los Angeles. But the weather was overcast, and they were using the non-preferred runway for spotting at the obs deck at Kansai, so I decided to take a Korean Air 744 to Incheon over an Asiana 763, or Korean A333 later that day.

I was given a seat assignment at check-in, a bulk head window. I moved a few rows back once onboard, to a row with 3 seats to myself. As we were boarding, a nice KLM 777 arrived, so I got some sweet photos of it blocking into the gate.

Departure roll was quick, and we turned left after departure, offering a great view of the new "addition" to Kansai. The second island is pretty much done, with the runway already complete, they continue to shape the land, though.

Korean Air had probably the best service I have experienced for a short-haul Economy Class flight. Full meal service, really attentive flight attendants (by the way, with their new uniforms, these girls look stunning). I mean 1 hour and 12 mins of flying time, and they still offer a full meal on a 747-400! Unheard of, by North American standards.

We landed at Incheon ontime, on a really awesome clear day. Cargo city there had tonnes of interesting traffic. Korean Cargo up the wazoo, Cargo 360, Jade Cargo, Atlas, FedEx, Northwest Cargo... list goes on. Too bad there was a lot of heat haze there... long distance shots were ruined by heat haze.

We deboarded, and I stayed in the transfer area for a while taking photos. I was asked twice to stop, but they didn't really seem too insistant about it. I then cleared customs, and went to check out the rest of the terminal.

Jesus Christ, is this a nice terminal. Brand spankin new, and totally modern-looking, as it should be. Lots of open space at the checkin lobby.

I checked in with Air Canada, and was given seat 27K for the flight to Vancouver. I also had to pay a departure tax of roughly 28 US Dollars. I went through security like 4 hours early, cause I wanted to take more photos. The tint on the windows meant most of the photos through the glass turned out a little green, but nothing that photoshop can't take care of.

There was a tonne of interesting traffic. Vladovostok Air Tu-154, Aeroflot IL-96, Lufthansa 346, and tonnes of Asiana stuff I never get a chance to see in Canada (777s, 333s, 321s). So I spent several hours walking freely throughout the entire terminal taking photos of planes, and the terminal itself.

Routing/Flight No: Seoul Incheon-Vancouver AC64 Seat 27K
Aircraft: AIR CANADA 767-300 C-FMWU (old colours)
Load Factor: 85 Percent
Cruise Level: FL350
Flight Duration: 9hours 35mins
Pushback/Rotation/Touchdown: 16:55 / 17:08 / 10:43

This was the first of 2 Air Canada 767-300s flying Seoul-Vancouver that day. I checked in at the front counter, and had to pay the departure tax of approximately $28 USD before clearing security. They gave me a window seat in Economy, 27K. I ended up having 2 seats to myself... which was good because of the high load factor of 85 percent.

We pushed back from the gate, where a company 763 was waiting to pull in. We taxied all the way to the other side of the airport. I was able to get some decent photos of various planes parked at the gates, as we taxied by.

Departure was early, meal service was served shortly after departure, and I went to sleep for a few hours. Without a PTV or something interesting to do on my laptop, I find it is fairly easy to fall asleep when I am bored.

Arrival into Vancouver was pretty standard. We did do 1 360 degree hold northwest of the city due to high traffic volume coming into YVR. I cleared Canada Customs at YVR in the blink of an eye with my Canpass card.

Routing/Flight No: Vancouver-Calgary AC210 Seat 22D
Aircraft: AIR CANADA A319 C-FZUL (hybrid colours)
Load Factor: 85 Percent
Cruise Level: FL370
Flight Duration: 1hour 2mins
Pushback/Rotation/Touchdown: 12:00 / 12:21 / 14:23

The load was pretty damn full, and Air Canada has numerous departures on the Vancouver-Calgary sector at around 12:00 noon. I guess they take lots of connections off the inbound flights from Asia.

We departed off RWY 26L and landed on RWY 16 at Calgary. Because I was stuck on an aisle, I have no photos or videos.

Routing/Flight No: Calgary-Winnipeg AC8336 Seat 15A
Aircraft: AIR CANADA JAZZ CRJ-705 C-FKJZ (green)

I usually record all the flight times/load factor/cruise level/runway assignments on the back of my boarding pass, but looking at the boarding pass now, nothing was recorded, which meant this was an uneventful flight.

The trip was great. I was glad to be able to fly Business Class on the A340-500 while they are still around in the Air Canada fleet. There is speculation that one of the first routes to be handed over to the 772/LR will be Toronto-Hong Kong, so I wanted to fly this route on the A345 sometime, and I had a great time.

It was awesome to see Seoul Incheon too. L'aeroport est encroyable! From the variety of traffic, to the interior design of the checkin lobby to the gates... it would be nice if North America could build brand new airports like they do in Asia.

I was really impressed with Korean Air too. My short flight with them was among the best short-haul service I have ever experienced, from the attentive and really good-looking flight attendants, to the full meal service, it was really impressive.

Thanks for reading!

Superb report Matt. I think you are the only person with your own watermark comments on all photos here in the entire Trip Report Forum.

All your photos are absolutely wonderful.

Looks like Incheon has already joined "Asia's Gorgeous Terminal Club". Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Osaka and Dubai are all extra ordinary beautiful terminals. Bangkok will join the Club very soon.

MEL,

Another amazing report! Wow, the pictures are so clear! I've heard good things about both KIX and ICN, and they both look like really nice airports. Great pictures of the tails at Osaka and at Seoul. Those are a lot of cargo planes!

Looking forward to more reports

Excellent report and pictures; long flight though. I noticed that at Osaka the KLM acft was being marshalled into his parking spot. Is this common there, or just at some gates (I haven't been there myself) ? Also, the AC673 you flew back on appears to have a lot of vortex generators on the L/E of the outboard flap. I really don't remember those on 763's flaps.

Hi Matt,

1 word, excellent!

Loved both reports, pic's & video's.

Question if I may regarding the picture you posted showing part of the ramp outside the terminal, is it any good for spotting in general, ie would it be good for a day or 2? I'm not too worried about pictures, mainly after reg numbers.

Rgds

Mark

Hi!

I also enjoyed very much your report!!! Very nice those pictures you took of the planes at KIX specially those that I presume were taken when you were travelling in that train to your gate. I was happy to see good old PH-BQE again in KIX..I flew that exact airplane from AMS to KIX on the 25th. April 2005! Great flight, great service and great crew too.
Regards

Yeah, Air Canada flies a mix of A320 / EMB-190s on the Winnipeg-Vancouver route, but sometimes they are booked full, and you have to connect through Calgary.

Regarding Incheon, and spotting from curbside... there's gotta be a better place for grabbing tail numbers... somewhere closer to the runway. It was a decent place, but I wouldn't recommend spending hours upon hours there. You're pretty far from the runway centerline.

Camera details: 20D with 17-35L and 100-400L.

I think the KLM 777 being marshalled into its gate is standard.

Incheon is one of the nicest airports I have been to. And it is going to get a lot bigger when the first infield terminal opens in a few years. All in all, a very clean airport, and the wood floors in the boarding lounges are really nice.
