Bosnia/Sarajevo on Croatia Airlines

http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001029.jpg

Zdravo, dear readers,

the city of Sarajevo and the country Bosnia itself, is since a long time on my to-do-list.
No STR to STR flight for an acceptable fare is possible,
but there is also FRA to go.
Three legs in one day with time enough to visit the city, that´s the plan for today.

Here´s the link to the previous story:

Service OU 417 operated by Croatia Airlines
Scheduled: 10.05 // 11.25

Is this really true, what I hear during a wet and rather cold night.
Yes, it is, only some five hours at home with an even shorter time to sleep, it´s my cellphone again to wake me up.
No excuse here, the ICE from Stuttgart´s main train station will leave at 07.27 am
and it´s a very cheap, non changeable fare = EUR 14,25.
On the way to the airport at 05.45 am , parking the car there with the inbound leg in the evening to STR.
By subway to the main train station, some minutes to wait in the cold morning at the wrong track,
thanx to Deutsche Bahn, the usual, so it seems track change, but in the end the train is leaving Stuttgart ontime.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001001.jpg
Important for me, with only limited time in FRA to connect for my first flight.
Some story behind, booking is done with Govolo, a voucher calm the fare down to an acceptable level, FRA-LJU-SJJ, for the first time on Slowenian Adria Airways with the first leg on the CRJ9 and the second on the CRJ2, around 70,00 Euro´s per leg.
Originally leaving FRA at 10.15 am and arriving SJJ at 3.55 pm.
Checking the schedules is a must for me, some six weeks ahead there is no more LJU-SJJ on Saturday´s bookable.
No info yet from the agency, double checking is the way, but definitely my flight is gone.
And much better, check-my-trip show me that I will go now FRA-LJU on the Saturday like my booking
and LJU-SJJ at Sundays. Overnight at LJU without any notice!.
That might be a big surprise for the non-frequent-traveller at the airport during check in.
Me in such cases calling always the airline direct, not the sidestep via the agency.
Anyway it isnt possible at all, its only a french adress on the website, no telefon number.
And also as always in such cases I check my options before calling the airline.
The cheapest oneway, if you call close to 300.-- Euro´s cheap is Malev on the B737-600 and the Dash 8/400 FRA-BUD-SJJ with nearly similar timing.
Croatia is more than 400.-- Euro´s oneway.
The lady at Adria´s Frankfurt office is really nice and she is also not amused that I´am on the self service way here without assistance from the agency.
I show here the options, a surprise, "Are you in the travel industry" is here question, "No way,
I do one or two flights from time to time".
Is Croatia ok for you, we will only rebook to Star Alliance carriers, or what about Lufthansa?.
No Lufthansa please, I will accept Croatia, but only for today!.
A mail in the evening shows my new ticket and more than three weeks later the agency send me a mail that something with my booking is not as original and if it´s ok for me.
The train is not full this Saturday morning and therefore the ride to FRA airport station is comfortable. Arrival ontime, 08.38 am, some 50 minutes now till boarding from Gate C04.
How I love these big board
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001002.jpg
It´s a good way to walk now, some ten minutes at security and in the gate area.
OLCI is done the night before on Croatia´s website, quick and easy to navigate,
seat selection is possible.
And also as ever possible, the last row window is me.
That´s the way to check the FRA operations
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001003.jpg
It is a finger gate with extra security, US carriers and also Air India is at the gate´s closeby,
it seems a high security area here.

India pushback
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001009.jpg
The plane is ready at the gate prior to my arrival, it is 9A-CTG, an Airbus A319 like the confirmation.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001006.jpg
A pretty well used machine, spend it´s whole life with Croatia since 20.01.1998.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001007.jpg
This is the first flight on Croatia for me, a new registration and leg no. 52 on the A319 at all.
The company operates actually 4 planes on type with CTG as the oldest example. It´s name is "Zadar".
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001008.jpg
Boarding is a real mess, very slow security at the gate, lot´s of pax, also family´s with small children without fixed seats, it seems on connection´s from US flights, yelling with the gate staff for seats together and things like this.
I´am with the last pax to board, the captain is at the planes door, I tell it to him and his answer is like, always the same here in FRA.
Anyway he´s a nice middle aged guy.
Four ladies in the cabin, friendly so far, especially that girl serving the rear part.
23A, my seat is taken, a family of three in the row.
I tell the nice FA that I will wait if there is another acceptable seat for me possible, or maybe I will change for biz instead.
She´s heading upfront, but is back soon thereafter with the information that biz is full and also the load in eco is 100%.
No window, no way for me, in 23F is a younger male, but it seems it is also not his original seat,
so she show´s me this one and the male take´s his middle seat some rows upfront.
Window last row now, finally all seats taken.
The cabin fitted with dark blue fabric seats, very low legroom, but clean so far.

This is the safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001013.jpg
No way here with misleading magazin titles
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001014.jpg
Departure time is finally 10.10 am, nearly ontime from the 4000 meters runway 18, it is cloudy with 12 degrees.
A girl in 22F is talking on her cellphone during taxi and it seems doesn´t stop also when other pax shouting to here, I press the FA button and finally she stops it.
The croatian captain is on the speakers with all the flight details I need inflight in a friendly style.
Flightlevel is 35000 feet and the route leads us above MUC and SZG directly to ZAG.
Flightime 1 hour 05 minutes.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001012.jpg
Service is free, a croissant, water, coffee and later on some cookies, not bad here with Croatia.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001010.jpg
Touchdown is on the 3252 meters runway 05, it is 11.30 am, nearly ontime and the weather is much warmer here,
some clouds and 22 degrees, it feels definitelly like south of the alps!.
My seat during disembarking
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001015.jpg
The plane at it´s home base

Ready for ground service
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001017.jpg
More than two hours now to spend at ZAG, time enough to walk around an enjoy the warm weather.
ZAG airport is not a bad place, but also not that really up to date in comparison to larger airports.

Delivery date 30.03.2010, a new registration for me, leg no. 10 on type.
9A-CQF is named "Primorje" and it´s one of six examples in the OU fleet.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001031.jpg
Good looking cabin, one male, one female in service, both ok.
Dark blue leather seats, no recline, clean, much better legroom than on the A319.

By taxi seems the only acceptable way to the city centre.
A pretty interesting way at all, driving along Bosna TV and the Holiday Inn Hotel,
two major pictures in my mind about Sarajevo.
Years ago during the Balkan war I see the journalists in the hotel, the TV station sending pictures out to the world and on both sides of the city sitting the war parties on the mountains and sending their unwelcomed greetings down to the poor people in the prison like city.
Holes in the wall here at this house

Service 4U 2497 operated by Germanwings
Scheduled: 20.25 // 22.10

Two "Odlasci´s" only this afternoon, sorry for the blurry picture
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001080.jpg
No online check-in for Germanwings out of Sarajevo.
No staff at the desks when I arrive.
Booking is done here via Expedia for some 70.-- Euro´s, acceptable with only very low competition at Sarajevo and an evening flight during the school vacation time.
The airport is small but nevertheless modern looking
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001082.jpg
A view to the small car park beside the terminal, houses close by
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001083.jpg
The apron with some big mountains on the other side of the valley
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001084.jpg
More pax arriving and queueing at the desks, far from any orderly style.
Two agents heading to the desks and lucky me, a male one starts its business directly in front of me. The usual question shows 24A for me on the boarding pass, some changes with 4U, 25 rows is standard. "No bag to check, you´re sure?", it seems I´am not the standard traveller here.
Up the stairs and no staff at security, some more time to wait there.
Finally the guys coming from they´re coffee break and I´am trough in a minute.
Also airbridges here
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001085.jpg
The other side of the apron
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001086.jpg
Weather forecast shows some thunderstorms in the afternoon and so it looks like
during my planes arrival
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001087.jpg
Turning to the apron
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001088.jpg
Not a real need for the follow me car here
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001089.jpg
It is D-AKNQ, another A319, first in service with US from 18.01.2000 and joining Germanwings
at 14.07.2005. My second time on this particular plane, leg no. 53 on the A319.
There are actual 30 planes on type with Germanwings.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001090.jpg
A pretty white nose here
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001091.jpg
And finally at the gate
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001092.jpg
More and more heavy black clouds coming in, so it seems we should leave soon
before it isn´t longer possible.
Boarding start´s from gate 3 and me, with the seat thing in mind, try to wait till the end.
I´am finally the last pax to board and see 24A free, but 24B and C occupied by a couple.
But this plane has definitely 25 rows, and 25D/E/F is free for me, so with a load of 90%,
three seats for me here.
Dark grey leather seats in the cabin, clean and better legroom than on Croatia.
It ist cloudy, 22 degrees and 08.40 pm when we rush to the active, 30 this time, 15 minutes late.
A strange departure path here, sharp right short after liftoff, quickly followed by another left turn
to avoid the major clouds.
The german captain is on the speakers with detailed informations, the seatbelt sign will stay on for some more time and service will start only when we leave the thunderstorm zone.
The duration is 1 hour, 30 minutes, at level 38000 feet above Zagreb, Klagenfurt, Salzburg and Munich.
The safety card
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b305/FLIEGER67/BIH1001/BIH1001093.jpg
One female, two male FA´s here, much more motivated than on my last Germanwings flight,
the purser also introduced the cabin crew by name.
Service is buy on board.
The flight itself is not more shaky than several other flights lately and so we´re approaching STR´s runway 25 not long thereafter.
Landing is at 10.10 pm, ontime now, only light clouds here and the temperature is 15 degrees.
By bus to the terminal, the guy at immigrations ask me about my intention to go for one day only to Bosnia. The electronic system shows him all my travel details, so it seems.
No excuse here, it´s just for fun, my first time to go there.
Enough for him, so it seems, out in the public and on the car back home.

Croatia was ok, more on the Dash than on the Airbus and Bosnia together with Sarajevo,
a real positive surprise, something to do again soon.

This is the first of four stories in a row now with cancelled flights, bankrupt companies and
cabin crew on strike, that´s life these days.

Ah, anyone remember the short nights, another one ahead now.
Back home at around 11 pm, the next flight sunday morning will leave at 7 am,
some time for preparations and a very shorty time to sleep.

"BA on strike and my first time at LGW" coming up soon.

Facebook know´s me as "Markus Klaus Felger", if someone want´s to see me on the friends list,
send me an invitation and refer to A.net.

Comments welcome,
Markus (FLIEGER67)

Hi Markus,

interesting report about a rare airline, can't remember seeing any other OU reports here. I also liked the pictures from Sarajevo.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
No excuse here, the ICE from Stuttgart´s main train station will leave at 07.27 am
and it´s a very cheap, non changeable fare = EUR 14,25.

Great deal!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

Wow, this sounds terrible.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
I show here the options, a surprise, "Are you in the travel industry" is here question, "No way,
I do one or two flights from time to time".

Understatement of the year...
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Service is sandwich, cookie and free drinks.

More stuff than on the flight from FRA?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
This is the first of four stories in a row now with cancelled flights, bankrupt companies and
cabin crew on strike, that´s life these days.

2010 hasn't been a good year so far for aviation, let's hope for better times.

Hi Markus,
good job! Despite the great weather you managed to get this story online

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Boarding is a real mess,
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
No window, no way for me, in 23F is a younger male, but it seems it is also not his original seat,
so she show´s me this one and the male take´s his middle seat some rows upfront.
Window last row now, finally all seats taken.

Actually, I enjoyed similar experience lately, that report will follow. Seems to happen with some type of passengers/people on board who just don't care.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
A girl in 22F is talking on her cellphone during taxi
and it seems doesn´t stop also when other pax shouting to here, I press the FA button and finally she stops it.

Actually, same thing happened to me lately, but I didn't bother. I won't harm to the aircraft, at least, that's my impression. And, signals are gone quick enough once airborne
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
"No bag to check, you´re sure?", it seems I´am not the standard traveller here.

Oh yes, don't tell me about this LOL!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
I´am finally the last pax to board and see 24A free, but 24B and C occupied by a couple.
But this plane has definitely 25 rows, and 25D/E/F is free for me, so with a load of 90%,
three seats for me here.

Followed your advise lately on several flights I took, and actually it works out

Might have a look into OU fares myself, still need some flights later this year. Although I don't want to end up on those A319's. Really shabby looking machines, not my favourite choice to be honest.

Regards
Eric

Hi Markus,

Another great read as always.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

Where do you find these bargain fares?! You're a real pro at it

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

That statement is a classic. As PH said, understatement of the year
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
A girl in 22F is talking on her cellphone during taxi and it seems doesn´t stop also when other pax shouting to here, I press the FA button and finally she stops it.

Good for you for intervening. Some people are just unbelievable. And what is it with people who keep pinching your seat?!

Those seats on OU's Dash are very smart indeed, I really like the look of them. And seems you found another gem with the city of Sarajevo.

That last row on 4U's 319 - I sat in it once on seat F and didn't have a window. Is that standard or was I unlucky?

Happy flying

Hi Markus,

Brilliant report of your trip to Sarajevo. The old town looks like a mini IST for me with the minaret and narrow streets.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

And much better, check-my-trip show me that I will go now FRA-LJU on the Saturday like my booking
and LJU-SJJ at Sundays. Overnight at LJU without any notice!.

What a crap. I would better stay away from this company.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
more than three weeks later the agency send me a mail that something with my booking is not as original and if it´s ok for me.

And what did you say? That you have sorted things out by yourself and thanked them for their 'help'?

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
especially that girl serving the rear part.

I can imagine that. She managed to arrange a window seat for you.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
A girl in 22F is talking on her cellphone during taxi and it seems doesn´t stop also when other pax shouting to here, I press the FA button and finally she stops it.

Hi Markus,

Very nice report and great pictures of your flights and of Sarajevo, a not so well-known city, so I found your impressions highly interesting. The city seems to be worth a visit.

Hi Markus,

Another real nice read and pictures, thanks for posting the story.

That agent you sued to book the flights seems pretty bad service wise, might be wise to avoid them in future. I've not heard of them here, are they well known in Germany?

Seems Sarajevo is a pretty nice looking city, one day I'd like to visit here too - i seem tol have too

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
Service is free, a croissant, water, coffee and later on some cookies, not bad here with Croa

- Not bad for such a short flight.

Germanwings seems to be keeping their growth quite, never realised they were up to so many planes now, quite imprssive really.

As always, looking forward to the next trip.

Hi Markus,

Another great read to another interesting city! That place sure has some history. Really nice photos to go along with it.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
23A, my seat is taken, a family of three in the row.
I tell the nice FA that I will wait if there is another acceptable seat for me possible, or maybe I will change for biz instead.
She´s heading upfront, but is back soon thereafter with the information that biz is full and also the load in eco is 100%.
No window, no way for me, in 23F is a younger male, but it seems it is also not his original seat,
so she show´s me this one and the male take´s his middle seat some rows upfront.
Window last row now, finally all seats taken.

Sounds bad.. How do they get away with just sitting anywhere? Funny to find others want the back row as well!

Hi Markus,

Was looking forward to this report and of course it didn't disappoint. Sarajevo definitely is a bit out of the beaten path, but looks like quite an interesting city from your pictures. The weather looked a bit gloomy, though.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
No STR to STR flight for an acceptable fare is possible,

Really, considering it is such a short distance, 0 miles!
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
That might be a big surprise for the non-frequent-traveller at the airport during check in.

Oh yes, I always wonder about how many people are unpleasantly surprised at the last moment since it never occurred to them to check their flight details in advance - and in the last moment your rerouting options are usually quite limited as well!

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):
I show here the options, a surprise, "Are you in the travel industry" is here question, "No way, I do one or two flights from time to time".

Hehe, I've been asked a similar question quite a few times when talking with various airline and travel industry people - they don't always want to believe that I know that much about things just for a hobby. But yeah, doing ones homework before trying to get rerouted usually helps a lot.

Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter):

By bus to the terminal, the guy at immigrations ask me about my intention to go for one day only to Bosnia. The electronic system shows him all my travel details, so it seems.
No excuse here, it´s just for fun, my first time to go there.
Enough for him, so it seems, out in the public and on the car back home.

Err, this sounds very scary to me! I'm not a very big fan of any Orwellian society at all and this is exactly like that. I wonder if they always see such details, or whether Bosnia and certain other countries just raise a few warning flags in the system.

Hello FLIEGER67,

Nice trip report. Next time, remember to order a bit more of sun   , and take a ride to the hills and mountains surrounding Sarajevo. The roads leading to the former Olympic village and infrastructures are really scenic. You can also go to that River Bosna spring if you like ancient villas, woods, lakes, ducks and so on.

I didn't see if you mentioned that you had to go through security before entering the Terminal in SJJ (even landside). I know it's common practice in some sensitive areas of the world, but in my opinion it's just an unnecessary hassle here.
Some time ago, I flew there and rented a car, I had to go to the car and then back to the lost luggage counter (lol), not funny at all.
