Widget & The Flag: New York To New York On DL & US

LGA-DTW-FLL-CLT-LGA on Delta and US Airways

NTRODUCTION

A rite of passage is a ceremony performed to facilitate or mark a person's change of status upon any of several highly important occasions. It could be a wedding, a tribal ritual, a religious ceremony or something unique and unusual. As an aviation geek, one of my bucket list is to fly for the sake of.... well.....flying! I just turned 16 this year and to celebrate the perfect square that is my age, I wanted to do something exciting, something spontaneous and unforgettable. I also wanted to congratulate myself for surviving the dreaded "Freshmen Year" of high school, I didn't just survive it, but I did it with flying colors and a GPA of 4.0. I have received a good amount of money on my birthday, a couple hundred dollars. Although I spent some portion of it to buy more Delta Air Lines merchandise for my "Delta Shrine", I saved a huge chunk of it to plan a day trip from my home city of New York. When I introduced the idea of flying for the sake of it to my friends and my parents, they thought I was crazy, but hey, waking up early in the morning to catch your flight, holding that boarding pass with your flight and gate number, boarding time and airline logo, the smell of coffee, the sound of final boarding announcements, that excitement of hearing your boarding group being welcomed to board, that eternal march on the jetway to your aircraft, the flight attendants welcoming you at the door, looking for your row, Deltalina wagging her fingers at you, the plethora of colorful and various airlines outside the window, powerful takeoffs and exciting landings, seeing the world below you from 34,000 feet above, it just excites me! Although I have traveled a lot before and to much more exciting and exotic destinations, this trip will be a special one. It will be an Aviation Rites of Passage, my very first Day Trip and my first experience travelling alone.

PLANNING

I was originally planning to do a day trip in the Pacific Northwest, a region in the US I haven't been to with half of the trip paid by cash and the rest by my dad's AA Miles. Although flying with AS, AA's 767 and The Saab 340 might be tantalizing, it requires two transcon flights in 24 Hours and I have to wait til' November! So, I settled with my home region, the US East Coast. As usual, the very competitive NY-Florida market offers very competitive prices which is always good for the passengers. Using KAYAK, IMO one of the best websites ever developed, I found myself back to my favorite airline in the US: The Widget: Delta (B6 and VX are there too   ) Okay, so Delta offered some weird pricing. To fly to DTW it will cost you $250+ but to fly to FLL via DTW will only cost you $105. So it was a done deal. LGA-DTW-FLL will be on Delta. B6 offered cheaper prices from my preferred airport of JFK but it was a nonstop flight, so B6 is eliminated from the list. From FLL, the prices were much lower . Both B6 and NK offered the same price, although NK offered a new type for me, the A321, I've heard horror stories about them and it was a NONSTOP flight! In the end, I settled with US via CLT, with the flight to CLT on the 734 and the flight to LGA on an A321. The cost was $122, a bit higher than the others but I haven't flown through CLT and US Airways as well as the elongated A320 so it was a great choice! With my iPod, Headphones, camera, $100 dollars, passport and love for aviation in hand, I set out on a journey ALONE from New York to New York with the Widget and the Flag: Delta and US Airways.

DEPARTURE DAY:

I set up two alarms, one scheduled to go off at 3:49AM and the other one is set to go off at 3:55AM, just to make sure I don’t oversleep. Anyways, I didn’t need it since I was too excited all night and woke up at 2:50 in the morning and just went on the internet to pass the time. At 3AM, I took a shower and had breakfast and my mom called in a taxi for me at 4:30. They said 5 minutes, we waited and waited, 20 minutes later, we called again and they said 1 more minute, and around 5AM, the cab finally came. The driver asked me where I was going and I said Florida to visit my grandmother, I was way too lazy to explain that I am just going there for 1hr 14 Minutes! After a quick drive in the now busy streets of Queens, I found myself in the doorsteps of LaGuardia’s Terminal D, D for DELTA! I already printed my boarding passes at home for both DL and US, but I wanted to reprint my BPs so I’ll have a souvenir. The check-in area was nothing spectacular and the lines on the baggage drop off and regular check-in area was insane. I went to the kiosks, got some luggage tags (and by some I mean many   ) and headed off to security. Two DL agents looked at my boarding pass and asked me if I was flying alone, indeed I am! Security was painless and the TSA agent asked me how old I was and since I was under 18, I didn’t need an ID but I brought my passport just in case. After security and after regretting wearing converse (they take forever to get in to) I proceeded to Gate 10 where DL 1870 to DTW would depart. The terminal was cozy, far better than DL’s home in JFK, they were numerous shops and seats. Gates 8, 9 and 10 were all adjacent to each other, so it was crowded but there were enough seats. Flights to MSP and MEM were departing on the other gates, departing minutes from each other, our flight being the last one at 6:59am. My plane was already outside, N369NB was parked outside waiting for it’s journey to DTW. It was a long wait and finally boarding occurred by zones. What I appreciate about traveling in the US is that most passengers actually follow the boarding procedures, unlike my experiences in the Philippines which was just a zoo! I was assigned in Zone 4, after a quick wait, I boarded DL 1870, Airbus A319 service to Detroit Metropolitan-Wayne County Airport.

My flight. I was given a choice between the 6:10 or the 6:59am flight, I chose the latter one since the first one is too early and the 6:10 will be on the 738 and I just flew on a DL 738 from JFK to CUN via ATL last February.

Flight 1: LGA-DTW

Airline: Delta Air Lines (DL)
Flight: 1870
Aircraft: Airbus A319
Reg: N369NB (Former Northwest Airlines A/C)
Seat: 19A
Origin: LaGuardia Airport, New York, NY (LGA)
Destination: Detroit Metro-Wayne County Airport, Detroit, MI (DTW)
ETD: 06:59am, June 29, 2011
ATD:
ETA: 08:58am, June 29,2011
ATA:
Duration: 1 Hour, 59 Minutes

Our boarded the aircraft and it seemed the flight attendants were way too busy chatting, not a good impression. All but one of the flight attendants today showed any smiles at all, not the DL I fell in love with! I was assigned to 16A, window seat. When I got there, a young guy in his late 20s or early 30s was already there and I smiled at him signaling that I wanted him to get up so I could be seated.

“If we get lucky, the middle seat will remain empty.”
“Yeah I hope so.”

We both smiled and waited for the doors to be closed with the 16B empty. Unfortunately, our dreams were shattered when a nice looking lady in her mid 20s stopped at our row and gave that same smile informing the guy at 16C that he needed to get up. He was nice enough to help her with her luggage. Fortunately, she was really nice and she didn’t mind me taking a plethora of pictures with my SLR which as you all know is not very quiet when you click the shutter. The head flight attendant welcomed us onboard with no enthusiasm and with a robotic voice.

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard Delta flight Eighteen Seventy with service to Detroit.”

Ah, New York! Flying over the Hudson

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6004/5890784441_0e2a11ba05_b.jpg.

The captain announced that our cruising altitude will be 36,000 Feet and we would fly over Buffalo, NY and then over Canada before descending to DTW. The seat belt sign was then turned off and the flight attendants prepared the cabin for the beverage service. The lady next to me was getting cold and she reached for the service button and to my surprise one of the FAs approached her in less than 10 seconds!

"Hey, can I get a blanket please?"
"Give me two minutes"

The mean looking FA then walked away and never returned. However, the FA in her late 30s or early 40s then walked in the cabin and handed in two blankets to the passengers seated in Row 14, 5 minutes later, the lady next to me asked again, this time to the friendlier FA and she was given a blanket with a SMILE in less than a minute. The FA was really friendly throughout the flight, the other FA, while she was very professional and she was really serious while performing the manual safety demo didn't show any smiles at all. She wasn't rude or grumpy but a smile would be great!

Since it was a relatively short flight, the FAs were in a rush to get things done though the other FA still managed to do with a smile. The beverage cart finally came to our row and I asked for an Apple Juice like the one I had on DL 1297 from JFK to ATL (Also a 6AM Flight) since soda is way to early! There were no choice of snacks somehow and I was given the typical Biscoff, I would've chose it anyways. The FA gave me the whole can (note it was unopened, unlike my other DL flights where it was opened for us) I understand, not a big deal, it gets things done quickly. I took more picture and played with my iPod and reclined my seat. The recline was surprisingly great and legroom was decent. The seat was overall comfortable and the whole aircraft was spotlessly clean considering that it's an EX-NWA aircraft so it must be older than me! The cabin was quite cool, just the way I like it.

As we flew over Canada, the captain came into the PA and announced our initial descent to DTW. During final approach, we flew over Downtown Detroit. We touched down at approximately 8:40AM, 18 minutes ahead of schedule. We taxied to the gate and the captain announced that we would have to wait for a couple of minutes:

"Well folks, it looks like we have surprised the ground crew here coming in early. We'll have to wait for a few minutes to get a tow truck..."

After 3-5 minutes, we were towed in and we started to disembark. I didn't ask to visit the flight deck, well, because I was too shy to ask, (my mom usually does the talking   )

Gate A18

Transfer in DTW was painless. The terminal was very spacious, airy and clean. It was very easy to navigate and A18 where my flight to FLL would depart is only 2 gates away. Since it's my first at DTW I walked around and explored the airport. I walked to the far side of the concourse and looked for the famous fountain. On the way there, I saw a DL 744 probably going to DTW and a DL 772 going to ICN. The terminal was rather quiet this morning and it was peaceful. I also noticed that the automated announcements and signs were also done in Japanese. I took the tram inside the terminal to go back to the other side, I proceeded to Quizno's and sat at Gate A10 facing N369NB. It's scheduled to depart for BNA later in the afternoon. While walking around, I saw a DL 757-200 taxiing with the "humps" on the back which means that the A/C has PTVs/IFE. On DL's website it shows that my 757 doesn't have any IFE (Movie: NO) So I figured out that that won't be our aircraft. However, the 757 turned left and taxied to our gate and I was very happy to see that our 757 will have PTVs for the 3 hour flight. For me, IFE is very important as it passes the time and makes the flight faster. Our ride for today is N696DL, a former song A/C.

After a quick bite, I went to get some souvenirs and headed back to Gate A18 at 10:00AM, the scheduled boarding time. I found a seat next to the gate and guess who was there! The lady who sat next to me on DL 1870, the only available seat was right next to her so I sat there, she must think I'm stalking her! I smiled and she smiled back, it will be completely funny if she sat next to me on this flight! LOL

Boarding was delayed for around 10 minutes because a flight attendant didn't show up:

"Ladies and gentlemen, we are sorry for the delay. We are still waiting for a flight attendan--- Oh wait! There she is."

Passengers were already gathering around the podium for boarding. I waited for my turn, I was assigned to Zone 3. Boarding went by relatively fast and soon enough I was onboard DL 1804 to FLL. After the flight attendant showed up, boarding began by Zones with passengers with small children first then the general boarding.

Flight 2: DTW-FLL

Airline: Delta Air Lines (DL)
Flight: 1804
Aircraft: Boeing 757-200
Reg: N696NB (Former Song A/C)
Seat: 39A
Origin: Detroit Metro-Wayne County Airport, Detroit, MI (DTW)
Destination: Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood International Airport, Ft. Lauderdale, FL (FLL)
ETD: 10:40, June 29, 2011
ATD: 10:45, June 29, 2011
ETA: 13:41, June 29,2011
ATA: 13:15, June 29, 2011
Duration: 3 Hours, 1 Minute

This time, I was greeted by two friendly flight attendants and I went back to the aircraft. Row 39F was my seat for today. I was the first one on the whole row to get there. Legroom was far better than the A319, although the seats were kinda worn out, it was rather comfortable and the presence of PTV in each seats is an added bonus. Minutes later, a guy in his late 20s sat on the aisle seat, back in my mind, I was hoping that the middle seat would be empty so both of us would benefit from the empty middle seat. It was clear that we won't depart on-time as people were still boarding close to the estimated time of departure. I kept looking up front if people were still boarding, and one by one, each seat was filled and the middle seat remained empty. Then the head flight attendant came to the PA:

"Ladies and gentlemen, boarding doors have been close. This is Delta Air Lines Flight Eighteen-O-Four with service to Fort Lauderdale..."

YES!! The flight was 90% full, with the middle seat being empty as well as some seats on the back. This is the first time that the seat next to mine was empty (well I always travel with my parents so they're always next to me!  ) We pushed back around 5 minutes behind scheduled. Since there were PTVs, my favorite airline safety video was played with my girl Deltalina! I enjoyed every second of it and Deltalina wagging her finger never gets old! We taxied to the runway faster than usual and since there were no traffic ahead of us, we were accelerated down the runway in no time. This is my first time on a 757 and take off was spectacular! We headed south and soon enough, we were climbing to our cruising altitude. IFE was turned on and I rested while watching some shows.

Disembarking the A/C

As we approached Florida, it was clear that weather wasn't good. The seat belt sign was switched on as we experienced some turbulence. We made a left turn in Central Florida as we flew over the Everglades. It was a spectacular view, too bad it wasn't sunny. The seat belt sign was turned on the rest of the flight as we approach FLL. The flight attendants did their final check and flaps were extended. We touched down at 1:15PM, more than half an hour early. Since it was my first time onboard a 757 I was about to ask the pilot if I could visit the cockpit, but they somehow left early and we dismebarked at Door 2

The flight attendants were all standing at the door and wished us a pleasant day. Another great experience from Delta! My first impression of FLL was okay, it was nothing spectacular but it was definitely showing its age. It was rather dark and dingy.

[transfer FLL]

I had less than 1 hour to get from Terminal 2 to Terminal 3 for my US Airways flight. I asked a friendly TSA Agent about getting to Terminal 3.

"Excuse me, Hi, what terminal is this?"
"Terminal 2"
"Ok, How do you get to Terminal 3?"
"What airline are you flying?"
"US Airways."
"Ah yes, Terminal 3. Go down the escalator and go outside, it's to your right"
"Thank You so Much"
"Have a good one."

I walked down the escalator and stopped to check if all my belongings were there. I exited the arrival hall and walked to Terminal 3. It was very humid and I was walking on the sidewalk which was a bit dangerous so a moving walkway connecting the terminals would be great but I doubt a lot of people use FLL as a connecting airport.

I went on the kiosk to reprint my boarding pass. It worked fine and in no time I headed for security. There were no lines, so I finished in less than 5 minutes. The agents were very friendly and asked me if I was traveling alone and they were shocked that I was! I proceeded to the gate and grabbed a seat. The gate area was cozy but its showing its age, the choices of shop and restaurants were poor but there was a dunkin donuts, so I grabbed something to eat and waited for my flight to CLT to board. Our aircraft didn't arrive yet so I just walked around and took more pictures.

The flight number continues to DUB, which confused a lot of people since they thought it goes directly to DUB. I don't see the point of showing DUB as it just confuses people, why can't they just put US 724 to CLT?

Flight 3: FLL-CLT

Airline: US Airways (US)
Flight: 724
Aircraft: Boeing 737-400
Reg: N444US
Seat: 17F
Origin: Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood International Airport, Fort Lauderdale, FL (FLL)
Destination: Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, NC (CLT)
ETD: 2:55PM, June 29, 2011
ATD: 2:54PM, June 29, 2011
ETA: 4:56PM, June 29,2011
ATA: 4:50PM, June 29, 2011
Duration: 2 Hour, 1 Minute

Since it was my first time flying with US, I didn't know what to expect but I know they are bashed by so many people for being rude, arrogant and unreliable. When I entered the aircraft, I was greeted by two smiling and friendly flight attendants. First impression, good. The cabin was dated as I expected it to be flying on a classic. However, the seats were refurbished with leather and the cabin was well maintained. I was assigned to Row 17F, right behind the wing.

The seat was comfortable and legroom was decent. The seat in front of me was somehow broken as it kept reclining even though the person who sat on it didn't click the button. The flight attendants on this flight were very cheerful and friendly which I totally didn't expect from US Airways! We pushed back ahead of schedule, the only flight so far which departed on-time. A quick safety demo and we taxied to the runway heading to CLT.

The captain announced that the weather in the Florida area was horrible so we have to dodge a few thunderstorms. Flight time will be 1hr 41 minutes. We took off and headed off the Atlantic Ocean before turning left to fly over Central Florida and dodge the huge storm that's currently lurking in Northeastern Florida. The flight was extremely bumpy and we had to do some turns every 5 minutes or so to avoid the storms which made me dizzy. We leveled off and service began. Unlike DL, US only serves beverages and I ordered another round of Apple Juice. Like I said , the FAs was the biggest shock although my only complaint is that their uniforms were a bit old fashioned but then it mixes well with the date aircraft.  http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5307/5895454484_a800e39ec1_b.jpg

Nice little report you've got going here! A couple of formalities, though...

Quoting JetBlue777 (Thread starter):
Central Terminal with a Frontier A319

First, as a Frontier Airlines animal (of sorts), I am required to say "There go Andre" upon seeing this plane. Second, that would be an A320, one of F9's newest. (That's as severe as I'm going to get, I promise!   ) Third, I was lucky enough to visit that plane's flight deck in March, and it was pretty cool. I strongly suggest making your way to any flight deck; on my flight, I waited until most of the passengers were gone, then I just went forward and asked the crew if I could poke my head in for a few pictures. Not only did they enthusiastically approve my request, but the First Officer invited me to sit in the Captain's chair while he took my photo!

I would hope the flight crew wouldn't be jerks as to not allow you a visit, too, so go for it! I'll be waiting for the conclusion to this story (and for an upcoming flight deck photo...)

And I've been to the flight deck numerous times before, including Delta. On my previous trip report Delta, World's 4-Star Airline: JFK-ATL-CUN-ATL-EWR (by JetBlue777 Mar 4 2011 in Trip Reports), the pilots were nice enough to invite me in and the captain even gave me his hat for the picture! Upon deplaning the aircraft, the head flight attendant gave me a DL postcard and a retro pin! Good stuff. I love Delta

The only time I got rejected was in MNL while flying from ICN (OZ A333) I've always asked the pilots if I could visit the cockpit except this time because I was flying alone and well I was too shy to ask    My mom usually does the talking :p

The Red Delta One, I got from www.deltashop.com for only $1.60, but shipping and taxes cost $10.00 so it's great if you bought other merchandise, they have a lot so if you're a DL fan then it's definitely worth it! No problem. I think inside, the 319s are generally about as nice as DL's 738s, though the IFE on the 738s is better. The 320s are a different story; 3201 through 3250 are early 90s vintage, while 3251 to 3278 are a similar age to the 319s.

Hi Jezrel,

I had over an hour and a half in CLT to transfer. My flight from FLL parked at Concourse B while my flight to LGA was due to depart at Concourse C. It was the evening rush hour and the airport was packed and it was definitely crowded. The airport was well designed and the amount of shops and restaurants is excellent. There were also numerous amount of moving walkways which made the transfer easier and faster. I was on the gate in less than 5 minutes, on the way there I took a couple of pictures and it's definitely US Land! Concourse C was showing its age, the ceiling was dilapidated and the windows were dirty. The seats were worn out and it was already very crowded and it was just complete chaos. I wasn't hungry or anything since I've been awake since 3AM and I was feeling a bit jetlagged. I went to the shop across the gate to buy my usual magnet for every state/place I visited. The staff, as usual, were very nice.

Boarding

Boarding was the most chaotic thing ever. The flight from DEN was delayed so boarding was delayed by 15-20 Minutes, although the friendly gate agent explained the situation that didn't stop the passengers (mostly businessmen) to congregate around the podium. Finally, pre-boarding commenced with passengers with infants and the elderly/disabled occurred but the crowd would not moved and the agent had to "yell" (in a nice manner) to move out the way. There was this lady that was standing in the middle the whole time and I thought she was assigned to Zone 1 or 2 which is understandable but it turns out she was assigned to the last boarding zone and she was standing there for nearly half an hour!

Flight 4: CLT-LGA

Airline: US Airways (US)
Flight: 1630
Aircraft: Airbus A321-200
Reg: N190UW
Seat: 27A
Origin: Charlotte/Douglas International Airport, Charlotte, NC (CLT)
Destination: LaGuardia Airport, New York, NY (LGA)
ETD: 06:19pm, June 29, 2011
ATD: 06:35pm, June 29, 2011
ETA: 08:15pm, June 29,2011
ATA: 08:09pm, June 29, 2011
Duration: 1 Hour, 56 Minutes

Finally, Zone 4 was called and I boarded the aircraft. The agent made a comment about my camera as it was hanging on my neck, he wished me a pleasant flight with a smile despite the chaotic boarding. Upon boarding the aircraft, two friendly flight attendants welcomed me with a huge smile, just like my earlier US flight. The aircraft was well maintained and it was great to be on an elongated A320. I was assigned to 27A, near the very back of the cabin. Two more flight attendants were welcoming the passengers on the rear cabin.

"How y'all doing? That's a nice camera you got there. Make sure you'll take lots of pictures! Have a good flight hun."

WOW! Is this the airline I've heard horror stories about? This is the first time that a flight attendant encouraged me to take pictures. KUDOS to US!

As I reached my seat, I was the first one in the whole row again. There were two flight attendants assigned to our row. Both of age but they were one of the friendliest people I've ever met. Before the flight, the female flight attendant talked to each passenger and welcomed them onboard US Airways! This is a domestic economy class, in the US! Today's flight was 100% full and they ran out of overhead space and this man had three super large carry-on baggage (I guess he traveled with his wife and kids) He could not fit all of his carryons so the friendly FA tried her best to rearrange everything and she got this small carry on baggage

"Well folks, I need your attention. Who ever owns this laptop bag, kindly please place it under the seat in front of you so larger bags could be placed in the overhead bins."

A businessmen then called her attention

"That's MINE! There's a jacket right there, I don't want it messed up.."

"Well Sir, let me placed this jacket on top of my bag so it won't get wrinkled."

The flight attendant then folded his jacket and placed it on top of her personal luggage.

"Thank You."

"Your very welcome"

She then assisted the man with the thousand luggage and the man said that he didn't want to check his luggage. So the flight attendant called him back to the plane and placed it somewhere in the galley. She also called the other passenger's and personally brought their bags to the rear. Then more passengers came with a plethora of carry ons (Thats what you get if you charge people for checked luggage! ) Apparently, the back was already filled so she marched up to the front galley to placed the rest of the carry ons. I was really impressed by her friendliness and she was eager to help all the passengers. Keep in mind she kept a smile and a positive attitude while doing this, I can tell that she loved her job! As the plane filled up, the aisle seat remained empty while a friendly young guy in his 20s sat next to me. The aisle seat was later filled on the last minute by stand-by passengers. The male flight attendant, right before push back approached the man sitting in 26C and whispered:

"1C"

He was apparently upgraded to First Class. Good for him! He was sitting next to these two friendly Southern ladies

"Well ladies, it turns out I got upgraded to First Class!"
"Sucks to be you!"

The atmosphere on today's flight was definitely friendly. It seems like all of the passengers were in a good mood and the flight attendants couldn't be more friendly! Although I was feeling a bit sick, I was enjoying the flight mainly because of the flight attendants. We pushed back 16 Minutes behind schedule due to the carry on situation. The flight attendants did a manual safety video and we were cleared for departure.

Sun starting to set. I decided to sleep while my neighbor requested if I could close the shades as he was on his laptop watching a show, I agreed as I was getting tired anyways.

As we flew over New Jersey, we started our initial descent during sunset. I was hoping that we would do the Manhattan approach (where the A/C flies over Downtown Manhattan, then to Brooklyn, fly over Queens and Flushing Meadow Park before making a very sharp and late left turn)

The sun was setting and the glare was hurting my eyes so I grabbed my sunglasses and got a better view. I was confused on where we were, at first, I thought we did a northern approach but then I realized that we were going to fly over Manhattan! I grabbed my camera and the view was nothing short of spectacular!

Upon disembarking, the two flight attendants thanked us for flying US Airways. The other flight attendants as well as the captain were also near the door to wish the passengers a great night. I made my way out to the terminal which was cozier than DL's terminal. I exited the terminal and waited for the bus which took forever and I took the train home.

Verdict on DL, US and Conclusion to be continued.

Unfortunately, I didn't. I spent so much time walking around and enjoying the tram that I only had a few minutes to eat lunch then boarding began. Maybe next time..

The tunnel is a MUST...the total show takes like 12 or 15 minutes. Since most people use the travelators/moving walkways to get through the tunnel it is very easy to stand in the center and just take in the show!

While you are DTW you also have to sign a rock!

Here is my rock!

As we landed in New York's LaGuardia Airport, flying over my home city of New York during sunset, my first day trip and my first experience traveling alone came to an end. It was a wonderful way to end a spectacular day. Both US and Delta provided decent product and service but US provided the better soft product while DL provided the better hard product, here's my rating:

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5075/5903092992_872fa66858_b.jpg

Service Friendliness and Service Efficiency

The crew of DL 1804 (FLL-DTW) can not be faulted. They showed smiles, though nothing spectacular. The crew on my first DL flight disappointed me. Two of the flight attendants, while professional, didn't show any sign of friendliness or enthusiasm. The sole friendly flight attendant is what saved DL from a rating of a 5. She was excellent, she responded to passenger's request in record time and showed smiles all throughout. While the other FAs vanished, she kept walking around even though it was a 2hr flight. Kudos to her! Although the DL crew lacked friendliness, they responded to passenger's request like blankets in record time on both flights.

In-Flight Entertainment

Although DL didn't have any PTVs or overhead screens on the A319 flight, their SkyMagazine is one of the best airline magazines out there. The 752 flight had personal tvs which is an added bonus. LiveTV is complimentary, although the choices of channels isn't spectacular, it was more than enough for a short domestic flight. Some of the functions like the Trivia Game didn't function but this time, unlike my previous DL flight from JFK to ATL, the music section worked out fine. Overall, I love DL's IFE System, though VX has a better system.

Aircraft Cleanliness

Both aircraft were well maintained, however, the A319 was spotlessly clean. The 757 was worn out a bit, though nothing major.

Seat Comfort

The legroom on the 757 was better than the A319, however, the A319 had the better recline. Both seats were comfortable for a short domestic hop, anything more than 4 or 5 hours, it could get uncomfortable.

Website Info

I believe DL's website is one of the best out there, including their update app on the iPhone/Ipod. Like always, I appreciate the ability to select your own seats and update or view your trip online. I also love the website appearance and their brand image.

Drinks/Snacks

DL is the sole legacy airline that still serves snacks. What they serve is nothing near a meal but it's a nice gesture from them and I definitely appreciate it. As always, like most LCCs and Legacy, they also have beverage runs.

http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6001/5903093218_7b16d2c368_b.jpg

Service Friendliness and Service Effiiciency

My biggest surprise from US was the friendliness of their crew. The crew on both US 724 and 1630 were outstanding and they showed smiles, enthusiasm and love for their job. They may not have fancy uniforms and they may be older than most Asian flight attendants but they had something that most Asian FAs doesn't have, they interacted with the passengers. The crew on 1630 was one of the best set of flight attendants I've ever encountered. From the moment I stepped on board the A321, I was greeted with smiles and the flight attendant even encouraged me to take pictures. She was a sweet lady with a heart, she helped the passengers with the carry on luggage dilemma and even folded a passenger's jacket delicately and personally placing it on top of her luggage and that was in economy class! On a 1hr flight! I am impressed with the crew and there's nothing more to say, US Airways, you have won my heart! I do hope that my next flight with US would have the same kind of crew that showed dedication and friendliness.

In-Flight Entertainment

This is where US fails. Although they still have an in-flight magazine, it falls short in comparison with DL's Sky Magazine. Even on the A321, they didn't have drop down LCDs which would be an added bonus but for a short flight, it wasn't an issue.

Aircraft Cleanliness/Seat Comfort

All of the aircraft were properly maintained. The aging 734 was kept clean and the A321 was in great condition. The seats were nothing special, legroom was decent and recline was good.

Drinks/Snacks

US only offers complimentary beverages and nothing else. Their BOB selection is decent with good prices. A form of a small snack like pretzels, peanuts or cookies would be appreciated but again, it was a short flight.

Website Info

US's website is decent. You could select and change your seats, although, DL's website is still better based on appearance and ease of use.

Airport Environment/On-Time Performance

Both CLT and FLL were decent. US's presence in CLT was massive and they seem to manage it well. The ground crews were friendly. All of the flights arrived on-time and US 724 was the only flight that departed on-time during my day trip, so Kudos to US and FLL!

I had an amazing day trip with four great flights. If I could choose which airline wins this round, I'd still say DL. They provided a decent soft product despite the lack of friendliness on my DTW flight, however, their hard product is superior to US's with the PTVs in their 757s. However, as for soft product, US wins by a mile. The crew of both of my US flights were excellent and I couldn't wait til my next US flight and wonder if I'll get the same kind of crew.

AND OH, My camera is a Nikon D60, I don't know where I got that random number LOL. I recently got it as a present and I'm such a noob at this. Big grin

Thanks For Reading My 10th Trip Report!

I'll be posting the videos of my takeoffs and landings as well as the video version of my TR.

Hey Jezrel,

Congrats on being 16 years old and achieving a 4.0 GPA! It's wonderful seeing you flying around once again, always enjoyed your reports of your journey from the USA to the Philippines. DL and US seems to have a pretty good product onboard for domestic flights. I will also be flying on my birthday in 6 days on a day trip to commemorate me turning 20 years old and officially leaving the "10-19" category.

LGA has been an airport I'm always interested about ever since US 1549 happened as it is a small but interesting airport! Also great on your first DL flight that your female seatmate did not mind you taking pictures with your DSLR. From my experience in flying on LCCs, I always seem to get an empty seat (or even the whole empty row) next to me when I fly in the emergency exits! You are sure great at taking pictures on the tarmac and all of them are crystal clear, unlike me who can't seem to get my DSLR working right to take pictures to make them look like it's from a DSLR compared to a compact digital camera.

The "mean looking" FA is definitely not what should be representing DL albeit not on a flagship flight. I was really impressed by what the other FA managed to provide for the passenger who asked for a blanket, though. Also, I must agree with you that without IFE, in flight magazines are sure to help you pass the time faster. You shouldn't feel too shy to ask for a cockpit visit, you never know you'll get a chance to visit it!

The indoor train at DTW certainly looked fun, compared to the normal outdoor ones we have here in SIN. The substitution with a former Song aircraft is definitely welcome since a 3 hour flight without IFE can be like hell for me. One question - Did you have to pay for any entertainment onboard, or is it free?

I was also certainly impressed by the way US handled the passengers on your A321 flight and will be looking forward for a flight with them in the near future!

Keep those reports coming in!

Regards,
Daniel

If I had to take a guess, based on the hospitality, I'd say your crews on US were based in CLT.

They used to be equipped with LCDs. You can see the remnants of the IFE with the bulkhead mounted screen. The LCDs were removed in 2008 to save weight. The only things they would have shown on the LGA flight were the boarding video, safety video, passing-10,000 video, and probably some Cranium trivia, so it would not have made a huge difference.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it. I also love seeing your TRs around Asia, although I was born there I never really go to travel extensively like you did, maybe in the near future but for now it's North America then hopefully Europe in 2012

And yes, DL, as I expected, provided decent hard product and although the service disappointed me a bit they were still good. US surprised me a lot, mainly due to their fantastic crew, as for their hardware, it's nothing special. And oh, Happy Early Birthday! I'll be looking forward to your next TR! I've been really busy last month due to Final Exams, State Tests, etc so I haven't been following the latest TRs here on a.net.

One question - Did you have to pay for any entertainment onboard, or is it free?

LiveTV is complimentary with around 15-20 Channels IIRC, as well as music, the Trivia Game and the moving map/flight info which didn't work properly. Premium Shows and Movies are available from $1.00 (Shows) and IIRC the movies are around 6-8USD.

Thank you for shaing. I am partial to US for the obvious reasons however I have always enjoyed flying on DL as I always considered them to be a good airline. That being said I just flew them from PHX to SJU roundtrip on a confirmed ticket as I wanted to fly DL as they had the most convenient schedule. I was disapointed it as seems like they are not the airline they used to be, I encountered quite a few rude gate agents, nasty F/A's and inconsistent service. On the whole trip only one F/A stood out for being very friendly, helpful and seemed to enjoy her job. I am hoping this is the exception rather than the norm nowadays at DL.

Chepos

Hey Chepos,

I agree. DL can be inconsistent, some gate agents are very friendly and some, not so much. I prefer DL most of the time since they're usually the cheapest option out from LGA or JFK with the most frequencies and IFE (if you get lucky) , although I'm not a fan of their "SkyPesos" program (60K for JFK-LAX in Y!) , so my family usually flies with *A on longhaul international flights.

I'd say give them another shot, I had a CVG-based crew last February from ATL to CUN and they were fantastic.

Awesome trip report and pictures!

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 2):
While walking around, I saw a DL 757-200 taxiing with the "humps" on the back which means that the A/C has PTVs/IFE. On DL's website it shows that my 757 doesn't have any IFE (Movie: NO) So I figured out that that won't be our aircraft. However, the 757 turned left and taxied to our gate and I was very happy to see that our 757 will have PTVs for the 3 hour flight.

You're lucky, about a month ago I flew DTW-TPA on one of DL's 757s and there were no PTVs on board.

I was surprised that my A/C had PTVs since on DL's Website it doesn't say it has any form of IFE. It's really a hit or a miss, you could only guarantee a PTV when you're flying transcon.

As with most of the other posters here, love the Trip Report! Two airlines, four different types... what's not to like!

Quoting JetBlue777 (Reply 4):
The flight number continues to DUB, which confused a lot of people since they thought it goes directly to DUB. I don't see the point of showing DUB as it just confuses people, why can't they just put US 724 to CLT?

Why do they do this? That makes zero sense... we know the B734 will never see DUB and for all we know not one person on your flight was actually going on to DUB! I would agree they should have put Charlotte or at least Charlotte and Dublin as the flight number continues on. A lot of other airlines (like WN) will list out all the cities on a flight number.

The cabin was dated as I expected it to be flying on a classic.

I last flew on a US 737-400 about two years ago and you're right, the cabins are dated and tired. Your aircraft looked in far better shape than I remember my aircraft being in as I recall torn, dirty seats and oil-smeared wings and flaps. All cosmetic, I know, but it doesn't provide the best first impression.

US 1630 arriving from DEN continuing to LGA with the same flight number.

I wonder if the departure screen in DEN said "Charlotte", "New York/LGA" or both??

Downtown Manhattan with the Hudson River visible where US 1549 water ditched

A winner of a shot right there! Nice!

It sounds like both airlines did a good job. US Airways gets a lot of flack on this site, perhaps rightly so in some cases, but I think the worst examples are few and far between, as they are on any airline. It all comes down to first impressions, crew friendliness and simple on-board transactions such as serving drinks/snacks, getting the whole can versus a cup, etc. It sounds like these two airlines get decent grades for efficient, if not friendly, service.

As with most of the other posters here, love the Trip Report! Two airlines, four different types... what's not to like!

Thanks for the compliment!

Exactly. Not just US 724, a bunch of US flights from Florida (MIA, MCO, FLL, etc) has flight numbers that starts with "7" which then continues to a European destination. This guy approached the podium and asked if it was the right gate and when the agent explained why it says DUB, he laughed away and said "Ha, I don't have enough clothes for Dublin."

I expected the 734 to be old and worn out, so it wasn't really a shock to me. It was all about flying a Classic 737

If the departure screen in FLL says DUB then there's no reason for US not to include LGA on the display screens. Plus, I think we had the same crew too since I didn't see the pilots and FAs exit out.

Yep. DL actually disappointed me but its hard to hate an airline you love! I'll be flying with UA next month and after that, my family can now compare all of the US Legacies.

Thanks for reading, I appreciate the comments!
