After a great flight from Zurich to Montreal it was time to give Swiss business another try, this time on a night flight. First part of this trip can be found here:

Swiss A330-300 Zurich-Montreal In Business (by SloAir May 1 2011 in Trip Reports)

I was not sure if I would write a trip report about this flight at all, my first plan was to cover both legs in one report, but some nice surprises from Swiss and interesting events at YUL made this flight deserve a trip report of its own.
We arrived at the airport well ahead of our scheduled departure time, even so early that check-in was not opened yet.

http://www.shrani.si/f/d/11u/1mWtjXBi/101.jpg

So we walked around the airport a bit until the desks opened. We were the first to check in at the business class counter.

http://www.shrani.si/f/7/mp/2siCCmY2/102.jpg

My brother and I have silver status with Miles&More. So after our bags were tagged all the way to LJU, the agent told us that they have a very special offer today, if we are interested. They are offering upgrades to first class for just 1500 dollars per person!

Well the price was too high for us to even consider that so we politely declined. Then she told us that since the flight is heavily overbooked, they will have to upgrade some of us anyway and if we do not mind being separated (two in first and two in business). We asked if it would be possible for the two without status to get upgraded, and she said that she will check. She also told us they will call us at the gate and give us two new boarding passes.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3l/rU/4MZvrzdP/103.jpg

Security was not busy and we were airside in no time.

http://www.shrani.si/f/F/wp/8wfw6aD/104.jpg

Swiss business class passengers can use Air Canada Maple Leaf lounge, but it was not opened yet when we arrived so we waited at one of many seating areas.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1S/JO/1LONKUPA/105.jpg

When we arrived it was sunny and hot outside, but very quickly black clouds started to fill the sky and rain started to fall pretty heavily.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2V/dQ/3wyKEYA0/106.jpg

Since I only had breakfast and it was around 14:30 so I went to get something to eat. After that the lounge was opened and it had great views of the active runway and some taxiways.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2o/dn/hCn8rLf/107.jpg

The storm cleared and the sun was shining again.

Air Canada and Air Transat.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1t/VM/4e9zGGyc/109.jpg

I went to one of the computers (you have to put in your name and flight number to get free access) to check the status of the inbound flight. 2 minutes left it said so I waited by the window with my camera ready and in two minutes LX A333 touched down at YUL.

http://www.shrani.si/f/45/az/1mIMeEUD/110.jpg

I will flight on both of these aircraft in the next 24 hours – A333 to ZRH and CRJ2 to LJU.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1O/Bm/4DyFVZG/111.jpg

It was interesting watching various aircraft at YUL.

The lounge with enough seating for everybody.

http://www.shrani.si/f/11/Nm/1URVIorG/114.jpg

My business boarding pass.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3A/rJ/41ssX2WS/115.jpg

The wind was blowing quite heavily and a rolling baggage container got our attention.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3N/yv/2QMa5eKy/116.jpg

It also got the attention of airport workers.

http://www.shrani.si/f/S/RL/3fmwpn9Z/117.jpg

After flying and rolling for quite some time it stopped in the middle of the field.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1Q/13h/5RCuuF6/127.jpg

Aircraft were still taxiing by as nothing has happened. Isn't it dangerous that the engines would suck in these containers? I've seen pictures of this happening before.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1k/10k/3FzimMLp/122.jpg

What to do?

http://www.shrani.si/f/3x/Xz/3fhHizth/126.jpg

Just as the driver sat in the car the baggage container started to move again.

http://www.shrani.si/f/4/sT/4u6Lxpij/128.jpg

The driver started to race after it and was able to intercept it on the next taxiway.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3F/uB/3T4cOzIy/129.jpg

Under control.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2D/13d/2LlF5ZZK/130.jpg

Here comes backup.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3L/wF/4kAzsdP2/131.jpg

Meanwhile AF B777 from CDG arrived.

http://www.shrani.si/f/B/O1/365Wslto/132.jpg

While the baggage container was still sitting at the taxiway.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2Z/Qa/23nwsY2M/133.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/e/UM/1f1titqF/134.jpg

During the debate.

http://www.shrani.si/f/44/cO/1hpC6jzf/135.jpg

And they have finally managed to get the runaway container under control.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1P/hJ/4FryICqO/137.jpg

Victory formation!

http://www.shrani.si/f/12/3O/1KyA88P4/138.jpg

Probably going to the garbage yard.

http://www.shrani.si/f/t/10A/4AjJjoiM/140.jpg

Back to the aircraft pictures.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1f/Fs/4YV7VhHj/141.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/U/Xu/3bwkoG8s/142.jpg

Interesting events weren't over though, a United Express aircraft decided to go around and abort its landing attempt.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3E/AY/2GJqWl9M/143.jpg

Maybe because of the too strong wind?

http://www.shrani.si/f/v/oc/1XKqOZEV/144.jpg

I left the lounge 15 before everyone else to go check about our upgrade and take some more pictures.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3w/yr/3bauvViW/145.jpg

Today's flight will be operated by HB-JHH.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3v/oq/1pzZN8b4/146.jpg

Gate area. A full flight today.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2G/A8/1Q8YSKKL/147.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/2f/Tr/2PuORMDj/148.jpg

I then went to the gate where there were around 4-5 LX employees and a lot of boarding passes were lying around the table. I asked a young girl standing at the side that I want to check on the status of our upgrade that was discussed at check-in. She asked to see my boarding passes, so I gave two of them to her and she found two new boarding passes for first class to me. I then asked if it would be no problem if two other persons than those on the boarding pass would sit in first class, and she said we can even change during the flight.

Then, an older agent that we saw at check-in earlier asked to see all of my boarding passes. I gave her all four of them and she shuffled them a bit among others and gave me back four new ones. 'You are all seated in row 2.' I slowly looked at each boarding pass as you would do with poker cards, and each one had a bold text on top of them saying 'FIRST'. We have all been upgraded!

My first First boarding pass!

http://www.shrani.si/f/1r/5P/MkG3cnw/150.jpg

After everyone arrived we just stood in the premium boarding queue and boarding started shortly after. The lady that checked us in smiled and said ‘It worked out great for you’  http://www.shrani.si/f/1I/dU/28mfDTLS/151.jpg

Since there are only 8 seats in LX F class, we will be occupying 50% of the cabin http://www.shrani.si/f/2y/DW/ZyoXj3l/152.jpg

I've only turned left once after entering an aircraft, when I was seated in the nose of a 747.

First problem in First – how to take a picture of the whole seat?

Boarding completed, count is correct. It felt like a private jet, I did not see anybody board the aircraft after us.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1R/Xe/KF0WPPy/164.jpg

KLM has just introduced a new page for Slovenia. You can now book flights with Ljubljana as departure airport and you can connect to all KLM flights. This might be a good opportunity to try them  I would love to fly on the MD11 before they go out of service.

http://www.shrani.si/f/u/HW/345t1q0z/165.jpg

The first Airliner World magazine that I bought had an article about First Air. A lot of years later this was the first time I saw one of their aircraft in person. I would love to fly them as well http://www.shrani.si/f/22/CR/32rFXN9f/166.jpg

We had to wait for this Air Transat to depart.

Here it goes.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2X/cR/3c2lNbSD/168.jpg

I was still quite full from lunch at the airport, so I only opted for the main course – Fillet of beef with Cafe de Paris butter, Parisienne potatoes, baby carrots and sugar-snap peas.

It will soon get dark outside.

We decided to use the option of dining together and ate desert at seats 2A&D. It was really great having desert the same way we would have at a restaurant, just at 38,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean.

Max, our flight attendant, told me after dinner that whenever I would like he can make my bed, I just have to tell him. So when he came to pick up our deserts I asked him if he could make my bed now, while I went to check the toilets. I usually do not take my camera into the toilets, but as I was taking pictures of us having dinner together on the other side of the aircraft was a great excuse to go to the bathroom and take some pictures.

http://www.shrani.si/f/43/QG/4f2u69ig/228.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/2w/XW/1dtojW5J/229.jpg

No paper towels in first.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2v/o/2VApA9R0/230.jpg

Now a bit embarrassing moment for me – after I was done and wanted to return to my seat, the curtains were closed. I wanted to pass them on the left, but was unable, so I tried the right side, but they were firmly attached. So I just took some pictures as I was alone in the galley.

http://www.shrani.si/f/38/Ue/1qymF0q2/231.jpg

http://www.shrani.si/f/2A/h6/2HTQ5vAQ/232.jpg

Then Max came through the curtains (through the middle!). I never thought of that . All the excitement of first class I guess. So I just put my 'oh I was just about to pass' face on and returned to my seat

This flying bed looks so great.

http://www.shrani.si/f/4/Kb/2XtPWfjZ/233.jpg

The flight was going by just too fast.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3O/VJ/13ncjk2I/234.jpg

When the duty free guy passed buy I asked for the plane model. He told me A330-300. After getting clear that I am well aware of the plane model, but want to buy a plane model, I quickly received my souvenir for this flight. It was an A343 though, but it does not matter.

I took one last picture before going to sleep for about two hours. The map has the location of Titanic crash in 1912 marked.

http://www.shrani.si/f/3N/HY/4tgptKJT/237.jpg

I slept great for those two hours and would have no problems sleeping more, but we were already over Europe when I woke up for the first time.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1x/qo/1wRSoYCd/238.jpg

So I spend the last hour and a half of the flight just watching the moving map.

Well, the flight was sadly over, but I still had one more thing to do – I talked to Max during the flight and asked if it could be possible to visit the cockpit after we land. He said it should be no problem, that we would be disembarking from door 1L anyway and I should just wait there. And as promised when I walked to the front, Max said to wait a second, he checked with the captain and I was allowed to enter.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2k/3t/1UnOkBgf/268.jpg

This was my first time in the cockpit of any wide body aircraft, so I was very excited. The pilots seemed very friendly but I was unable to say anything but 'thank you' (twice ).

http://www.shrani.si/f/K/b/4sjQYRrZ/269.jpg

I also said I had a great flight and then left the aircraft through door 1L.

Back to reality. LX flight from NRT also landed at the same time as ours and a lot of people were waiting for the train to the main terminal.

http://www.shrani.si/f/1t/gW/1hQNuI78/274.jpg

The train has just arrived but we decided to wait for the next one, that arrived just minutes later.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2L/Uc/4T6xK9Kg/275.jpg

It looks very chaotic and crowded, but it was not like that. The train was not overcrowded and after arriving immigration had a lot of counters working so I was through in less than five minutes after coming off the train.

http://www.shrani.si/f/2e/m5/2N80yLs6/276.jpg

We spent the four hours before the flight back to Ljubljana in the very familiar business lounge at transfer center A, where we spent the whole day in December.

Business class is a great way to travel, but first class is just amazing. However, I do not think that the price difference reflects the service difference. You do get a better seat, more privacy, more food choices,… but I do not think it is worth paying 3x more than for business class.

Swiss is a great airline – both in business and in first the crew was excellent, service was great, food amazing, seats were very comfortable. If I will ever have a chance to choose Swiss form y travels I will not hesitate to book a flight with them.

After the cancelled trip in December My LX A333 C Flight Cancelled LJU-ZRH-JFK-ZRH-LJU (by SloAir Dec 27 2010 in Trip Reports) we were a bit disappointed with them. Of course it was not their fault that there was a big snow storm in New York at that time, but we would at least expect an email, as the one I received from AF/KLM, with an apology for our inconvenience or some compensation miles. But with this upgrade for all four of us Swiss totally redeemed itself

Thank you for reading my report, I hope you have enjoyed.

Hi Blaž,

very interesting report about LX F Class, I really like the airline's choice of materials and colors. You were really lucky to get upgraded. I wouldn't have paid 1500 Euro either for that relatively short transatlantic hop.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I was still quite full from lunch at the airport, so I only opted for the main course – Fillet of beef with Cafe de Paris butter, Parisienne potatoes, baby carrots and sugar-snap peas.

Where are the food pictures???

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Meanwhile AF B777 from CDG arrived.

New livery and grey replacement engine cowling...that looks so cheap!

Hi Blaz.

Well what a nice outcome for you and your party. Very cool to get the upgrade to F anytime.

I really enjoy the SWISS premium products though I have yet to try the new F. I was more than happy with the older F product but this looks really classy with lots of nice little touches and updates. Agree also regarding the personal light. Gives a really homely feel to the seat

Thanks for your report with some very good photos and plenty of detail.

Cheers, Lee.

Odd they have a baseball diamond in Zurich. I know they play baseball in Italy and The Netherlands, I didn't know the game was so popular in Switzerland that they have an actual baseball field.

I've never seen this before.

I have seen this on my flights with LX to HKG, I was in Y and this blanket thing was placed on the rear doors near the galley to keep the galley warm - I asked one of the FAs at that time as I have never seen it before. I never seen this on other airlines too.

Zdravo Blaž,

Oh wow, your own private F cabin! It reminds me of my experience with Qatar last year from Doha to Munich. Herman and I were the only ones in F!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
but some nice surprises from Swiss and interesting events at YUL made this flight deserve a trip report of its own.

Yes, this flight has deserved it!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
so we waited at one of many seating areas.

I don’t think it would not be that bad to spend some time there. Comfortable seating with many shops around.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
It was interesting watching various aircraft at YUL.

Yay, another A.net minded lounge! YUL’s AC Maple Leaf lounge!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The wind was blowing quite heavily and a rolling baggage container got our attention.

Yikes! Imagine the container being sucked into one of the engines or just smashing into an aircraft nose.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Then, an older agent that we saw at check-in earlier asked to see all of my boarding passes. I gave her all four of them and she shuffled them a bit among others and gave me back four new ones. 'You are all seated in row 2.' I slowly looked at each boarding pass as you would do with poker cards, and each one had a bold text on top of them saying 'FIRST'. We have all been upgraded!

That must have been a much better solution, haven’t it?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
First problem in First – how to take a picture of the whole seat?

Just point and shoot!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
What would you like to drink? Orange juice please.

I would have chosen champagne. Hey, what did the nice appetizer consist of?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
This might be a good opportunity to try them I would love to fly on the MD11 before they go out of service.

I would say, do it. I have never been on it myself.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The first Airliner World magazine that I bought had an article about First Air

How appropriate! First magazine about First Air.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I was able to take as many pictures as I liked without being looked at as an idiot or terrorist.

I don’t think your companion would regard you as an idiot after the upgrade.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Table set.

How was it carried out? On a tray or did the crew members place the utensils one by one?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I was still quite full from lunch at the airport, so I only opted for the main course – Fillet of beef with Cafe de Paris butter, Parisienne potatoes, baby carrots and sugar-snap peas.

Blaž, why did you stuff yourself in the lounge despite the upgrade hint at the check in?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
seats 2A&D

Lovely, I did not know the seats could be turned facing each other.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I like this light, it gives a special feeling.

On board lounge feeling, wasn’t it?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I usually do not take my camera into the toilets, but as I was taking pictures of us having dinner together on the other side of the aircraft was a great excuse to go to the bathroom and take some pictures.

On board, I always have my camera with me the whole time. You would never know what you might come across.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Now a bit embarrassing moment for me – after I was done and wanted to return to my seat, the curtains were closed. I wanted to pass them on the left, but was unable, so I tried the right side, but they were firmly attached. So I just took some pictures as I was alone in the galley.

I can imagine it. By the way, nice overview shot of the galley.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
What a great flight this was

Hvala. Thanks for sharing this unique experience! I hope I would have the luck one day.

Cheers,
Suryo

Very nice report and pictures! I had to laugh when the agent offered a special upgrade, then immediately fessed up and gave it to you anyways! If the airlines are offering special on the day deals they're probably overbooked and looking to garner a few extra bucks out of the situation, rather than give it away.

The situation with the baggage container was rather amusing!

The 'new' Swiss F product does look very quintessentially Swiss, very nice    Should probably burn my mountain of bmi miles on it soon...

It would not be the first time, I was surprised that they let aircraft taxi by. I found this picture of a JAL 747 at LAX.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
That must have been a much better solution, haven’t it?

No one was complaining
Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
I would have chosen champagne. Hey, what did the nice appetizer consist of?

I am not sure, nobody told us and it is not in the menu.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
How was it carried out? On a tray or did the crew members place the utensils one by one?

It is actually a lot easier than in J class. Here you just press the button and the table comes out and you just open it. In J, you have to press the button, rotate the table for 270 degrees, push it down and then up or something like that. When I was trying to figure it out the FA came by, smiled and helped me with it. I guess she is used to people desperately looking for a way to open the table.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
Blaž, why did you stuff yourself in the lounge despite the upgrade hint at the check in?

I'm sure not going to make that mistake again
Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
Lovely, I did not know the seats could be turned facing each other.

Two passengers can seat at one seat facing each other, so we just moved from 2K and 2G to the other side and all four of us were seated together.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
On board lounge feeling, wasn’t it?

Yes, like a living room 38,000 feet above ground.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 22):
Hvala. Thanks for sharing this unique experience! I hope I would have the luck one day.

You're welcome, thank you for your feedback. I remember reading in various trip reports here about upgrades and I thought to myself if only I would be such lucky someday. And it really happened, so I believe you can get an upgrade in one of your future travels.

Hi Blaž!

I just got off reading your outbound trip and I am delighted to hear you had an awesome journey inbound!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

LOL! thanks for capturing and sharing this! Its most dramatic and strange indeed and your pictures say it all!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I was so excited that I was just clicking, clicking, clicking, …

I could imagine your excitement! Thanks for sharing your pictures of all the intricate little details of the seats and cabin!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Airshow on LX is great, it even shows information about the places you fly over.

No wonder you had been disappointed on your outbound. Its really good indeed.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
We decided to use the option of dining together and ate desert at seats 2A&D. It was really great having desert the same way we would have at a restaurant, just at 38,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean.

What an experience!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I like this light, it gives a special feeling.

I've never seen a picture of a lamp in the aircraft like that! Its most nicely taken! Thanks for sharing.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The map has the location of Titanic crash in 1912 marked.

Most interesting indeed! Wish every airline had this in their flight maps.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
There are no overhead bins in the middle.

Good to know!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
You do get a better seat, more privacy, more food choices,… but I do not think it is worth paying 3x more than for business class.

Yeah 3X is definitely out of my consideration as well, especially when I've always travelled in Y.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Swiss is a great airline – both in business and in first the crew was excellent, service was great, food amazing, seats were very comfortable. If I will ever have a chance to choose Swiss form y travels I will not hesitate to book a flight with them.

Thanks for your review, it really is consistent with my own highly-regarded opinions of SWISS and I am most glad you feel the same way in the premiere cabins.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Thank you for reading my report, I hope you have enjoyed.

Its most certainly a pleasure reading your TR. You have been most detailed and really did a good job capturing all the little details of the first class cabin! SWISS definitely upgraded the right guy who could appreciate all the goodies in the front of the plane.

Kudos on this excellent insight!

WOW! Pretty impressive trip report! And, I have never heard a family of four upgraded to First - so pretty impressive overall. I wish these things happened to me ... not been upgraded at gate for longhaul in a VERY long time. C'est la vie.

Ok, LX - F indeed does look great. It continues to be the star performer in the LH stable. The only thing disappointing is the rather skimpy amenity kit.

What an enjoyable read, love your style of writing!

Nice idea about entering your name & flight number to use the internet at YUL.

Loved your photos of the baggage container story, what a thing to witness! Good job they managed to retrieve it before anything nasty happened.

As for the upgrade, well you lucky thing! You obviously had a wonderful experience in LX, which must have made up for the disappointment of your cancelled December trip. I like your anecdote about your group taking up half the cabin, not many people can say that

It was great for all four of you to get an upgrade to First, especially as only two of you are FTL. Chances of that happening are pretty small I think.

LX first looked great - I loved the lamp. The only poblem is that the flight is too short! If I had a seat like that, i'd want to be flying LAX-DXB or something!

Since I just had a math exam at my university I can calculate the probability of this happening again anytime in the future (hint: it is closer to 0, than it is to 1  )

Quoting gabrielchew (Reply 32):
LX first looked great - I loved the lamp. The only problem is that the flight is too short! If I had a seat like that, i'd want to be flying LAX-DXB or something!

Agree, the 6 hours just 'flew' by too quickly.

Quoting sfflyer123 (Reply 33):
Great TR. It does not look like there was a pre-arrival meal, however. Did they do food service just before arrival?

Hey sfflyer, thank you for your comments on my trip to and from Montreal. There was dinner service after takeoff and a breakfast service about one hour before landing.

Great report. LX first looks really good and I was impressed by their menu. That bed does look very comfy.

Hi Babybus, thank you for your comment, I'm happy you liked the report. The bed was as comfortable as it looked, it was just a shame that I could not use it longer.

PS: Where are the food pics you promised ?

I still have no idea why the main course picture did not make it into the report, I tried now for the fourth time but nothing helped, not even uploading it again under a different name. So I'll just post a link and I hope that at least this will work

= Blaž, thanks again for posting this. Looks great!

Saludos,
A.

Looks like the most elegant first class interior I've ever seen. From the lamp to the wood panels, it is perfectly understated! Thanks for sharing.

I agree, it is a pleasure to spend a few hours in LX first class.

Wonderful trip report, This counts for this one as well as the ZRH-YUL sector. Look you all got that upgrade to F. Hope you've enjoyed it.

Hi Blaz

Thanks for the interesting trip report. Now that's what I call poetic justice. After the fiasco on your first attempt to make it to YUL it's only fair that SWISS should make you a gift of an upgrade.

In any case, I greatly enjoyed reading all three reports. Thanks!

Cheers,
William

Hi William,

thank you for your comment. Swiss sure did redeemed itself with this unexpected upgrade, their first class is an amazing product, but I think that you are well aware of that

Hi SloAir

Great trip report and lucky you! I must say the lamp shade makes the seat look really, really cozy, when most of the other F cabins looks a bit like an office cubicle.

Also, the world map on the bulkhead looks really nice as well.

Cheers

Hi Coal,

thanks for your reply. The world map and the lamp do put a specially warm feeling into the first class cabin.

Regards,
Blaž
