Welcome to this trip report that will cover my flights from Ljubljana to Singapore with the main focus on Lufthansa's firs A380 flight from Frankfurt to Singapore in business class.

It is not often that I depart from LJU in the afternoon and go on a long-haul overnight flight from Europe, so this trip had a special feeling from the start. Plus the DST ended the night before, so I had plenty of time to get a good night sleep and prepare form y trip in the morning. My flight to FRA would leave LJU at 16:30, so I spend the day finishing packing, reading the morning newspaper that featured an interesting article about Singapore (how appropriately) and doing some last minute errands.

Since I've done a detailed report on LJU-FRA JP business class already, I will not go into too much detail about the first flight. S5-AAF, a normal CRJ2 ride on this short flight. The one interesting thing on the first leg was this Iran Air flight, making a fuel stop at Ljubljana on its way from Germany to Iran.

Once at FRA we had to pick up our boarding passes for the FRA-SIN leg, as they were not able to check us in all the way to SIN at LJU. After that it was time to head to the C gates, quite a long way from the main area. I was selected for additional security screenings and my camera was tested for explosives.

A lot of sings for different gates/lounges. Gate C16 for our flight today.

On the ground floor is the waiting area for economy class passengers.

LH A340-600 at the next gate.

Entrance to the business class lounge, which also serves as priority gate area for passengers flying in first or business class and passengers with status.

Up the stairs to the business lounge.

It's not the biggest of lounges, but since every A380 gate has its own lounge it is big enough.

Boarding is done directly from here, this is a nice concept, you don't need to leave the lounge and head to the gate.

Looking toward the boarding gate from the end of the lounge.

Drinks.

There were a few sandwiches available. I tried the 'Hot and Sweet chicken sandwich' and it was very good.

Apart from the sandwiches, some other food was also available.

Newspapers and world time clocks.

While reading my book I noticed a big aircraft appearing at our gate. I went down to check it out.

LH A346 was replaced with an A343 for the flight to Luanda.

Here it is! The Whale Jet! The King! Lady Bee! Whatever you prefer… It looks a bit ugly, but is very impressive.

D-AIMH, 'New York', the newest Lufthansa A380 will be operating this flight!

Up in the lounge there was an announcement by the ground staff. The flight was overbooked and they were searching for two volunteers to fly in economy class instead of business class for a compensation of 1500 Euros. From my seat near the gate I see quite a few people coming up and discussing the offer.

LH778 FRA-SIN 22:05-16:55+1 A388 D-AIMH 'New York'

Boarding is done via the automatic boarding gates, so you scan your own boarding pass and walk through the moving gates.

You have to take the escalator one floor down to reach the boarding gate for first and business class passengers. I love flying long haul. Any flight is ok, but there is nothing like going into an airplane and knowing that when you come out, you will be in another country on another continent with completely different climate, culture,…

This will be my 3rd A380 flight. I did the AF CDG-LHR roundtrip as an appetizer, but this time I was up for the full meal with my first A380 long haul flight.

One last look from the outside before boarding 'New York' for the long flight to Singapore.

I was welcomed on board with a smile and directed across to the other aisle.

There are two cabins on LH A380 in business – the first one is larger with 10 rows of seats.

The other part of the larger cabin, after that comes the galley and then another seven rows of business class seats.

My seat in the second cabin, 24K, one row behind the galley and one row in front of the emergency exit. This is a very good seat, the cabin is smaller and you have toilets in front and in the back.

Amenity kit and a bottle of water were placed in the compartment on the left side of the seat.

The seat is the same as on all other LH long haul aircraft, the one difference I noticed is that there is no smaller compartment next to the IFE screen, where you are able to put some small things. But there are two large compartments next to the window seats perfect to put in all kinds of stuff.

Looking back in this small cabin with the emergency exit on the other side.

Interestingly arranged seat pocket contents.

The outside window on the A380 is a similar size to all other aircraft, but the inner one on LH is a lot larger and gives you a very spacious feeling.

The aircraft was less than four months old, delivered to LH in July and it looked great. There was an announcement being made, but I could barely hear it. I thought there was a problem with the speakers, but I quickly realized that it was only played downstairs and they were paging a pax to report to the cabin crew.

Of course one of the best features on the A380 is the tail camera. I was able to watch planes landing on the new 25R runway behind the terminal building.

You can also choose a forward view from the front…

… or a view at the ground, more useful when you are not on the ground.

The captain came on the speaker and welcomed us on this 'First flight with the A380 to Singapore'. That was probably the only announcement about this being an inaugural flight. He announced a flying time of 11 hours and 15 minutes, a weight of 528 tons and a takeoff speed of 308 km/h if I remember correctly. After takeoff we would set course for Poland.

Brigitte and Jan were our pursers today, and the made another announcement welcoming us on this A380 named 'New York'. The safety video was then played.

We slowly taxied to runway 18, where we had to wait for a company B747 to start its takeoff roll.

Right after that it was our turn and the giant Airbus made a very quiet takeoff into the night.

We're on our way! Next stop: Singapore!

Still more than 10.000 kilometers to go.

Fresh and modern looking cabin during our climb.

Contents of the seat pocket. These side bins are great for storing stuff and for putting things on top of them.

LH A380 features NiceView Airshow with many different animations and displays.

Dinner service started soon after takeoff, menus were given out first.

Today's main courses, I went with the LufthasaClassics.

Hot towel service.

The seat controller is a bit different than on other LH aircraft. Still easy to use.

Two bags of mandels on this flight, nice. I actually just remembered I still have one pack left in my bag and went to eat it

Cockpit view while waiting for my starter.

Leaf salad with chanterelles, cherry tomatoes and pumpkin served with potato dressing.

In detail.

Main course – Roasted Goose with Red Cabbage and Potato Dumplings. I think I had the same meal a few years ago on MUC-JFK.

IFE has some interesting movies, I did not watch any on this flight, the NiceView Airshow was just fine for me.

After dinner I went to the toilet and put my seat in the flat position, read a few pages of my book. I got a bit sleepy so I put my earphones in and…

… woke up 7 hours later!

We were already over the Bay of Bengal.

The cabin was still dark but the light around the window indicated that it was already a new day outside.

Tail camera proved that. This was one of my best sleeps onboard any aircraft.

I got up with about 2 hours and 30 minutes left to Singapore. We have already come a long way.

Time was literally just flying by. This flight was great.

Lights were turned on about an hour and a half before landing.

Safety card is folded in the pocket on the right side of the window seat.

The other side.

Breakfast service offered either a cold or hot option.

Cold – Cambert, Rahmberg Cheese, smoked Turkey Breast, Juniper flavored Ham, Tomato.

Hot – Scrambled Egg with Turkey Ham, Seasame Cookies, Leaf Spinach, Sauce Hollandaise, diced Tomatoes. Both meals came with Fruit Granola with chopped Pistachios.

LH postcards.

After breakfast the cloud show started, I was glued to the window until landing.

The views were fantastic.

There were quite a lot of thunderstorms around this area.

Captain made an announcement that as he was afraid, we are going to be put into a holding pattern due to air traffic congestions around SIN.

More time to enjoy the view.

A380 is a very quiet aircraft. So quiet, that the noises inside the cabin become a bigger problem than the sound of the engines. You could hear every pax move their seat and snoring pax can become even more annoying.

Spectacular!

Finnair holding below us.

After some circling we were cleared for our approach into SIN.

Land below.

Lining up with the runway.

Some rain in Singapore.

Getting closer and closer…

We could enjoy the sight of dozens of ships making their way to the port of Singapore.

Over the ground now.

It’s just amazing and fascinating how we are now just like that at the other side of the world.

Runway in sight.

Landing at Singapore Changi airport.

When we left Germany Qantas fleet was still grounded. Looks like they have resumed operation in the meantime.

You're welcome, Lufthansa.

Not the best of weather to take some nice first pictures of Singapore.

Quite a long taxi to our gate E5.

Nice!

Pictures and video taken of our arrival.

We parked next to LH A343 from MUC, going to CGK next.

It was a bit sad leaving this amazing aircraft, this was probably my best flight so far, even better than LX first, that YUL-ZRH flight was just too short to fully enjoy it.

I stopped to take this picture of the A343, a ground agent noticed me taking the picture and when I came by, she bowed and said 'Welcome to Singapore!'

Looks like there were some celebrations held for the return flight, I guess I should have picked that one.

Every passenger disembarking was given a LH rose. Nice gesture for the first flight.

Useful information.

You only get one chance for a first impression and so far everything was perfect. From the friendly greeting, the rose, fast and easy immigration, nice looking terminal, Singapore impressed us from the start.

And during the next week Singapore continued to impress. It is an amazing, clean and beautiful city.

Little India.

'International flags' as our local guide referred to the laundry. You can see from where the people are by their clothes.

'Southernmost point of continental Asia'

There was a Titanic exhibit and it was done in a very nice and interesting way. But taking pictures was not allowed.

View from the Skypark on top of the Marina Bay Sands.

Southwest airlines fish

I really enjoyed my time in Singapore. The only thing I would change would be the weather. Hot, humid and wet so not what I prefer, but it was nice to escape to someplace warm before the European winter takes over.

This was my 12th flight with Lufthansa and so far they have proven to be a very consistent carrier – all of my flights with them were very good and I would be glad to fly LH again.

Best regards,
Blaž

Hi Blaž!

Nice tripreport.
The LH A380 sure seems to offer a nice product. Will be flying it myself in early 2012, although in Economy, so we will see how that will be like!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

That tail camera sure looks like a nice feature.

Can't wait to experience it myself, even though I believe the sound level will be somewhat higher on the lower deck. Probably not too bad though, since I will be seated in the most forward cabin, where some airlines have their First Class cabin.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
View from the Skypark on top of the Marina Bay Sands.

Sure looks like an impressive building.

Thanks, Good to see another airline flying into SIN. I like your pics of the city....reminds me of my visit, very tourist friendly.
1500 compensation from C to Y doesnt seem very much, surely the difference in ticket price was more than that?

Hi Blaz!

Nice report with nice pictures ! Flight seems nice but food looks disappointing to me especially for Business Class.

I love the pictures from Singapore and I got almost the same pictures from first visit there in 1994.

Looking forward to your next report.

Hi Blaž,

thanks for this nice and very interesting report. Glad you had a nice experience on LH. Have done that flight once a long time ago in the other direction, back then on a B747-400, only in Y, but still the longest flight in my log and one of the most memorable so far.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Boarding is done directly from here, this is a nice concept, you don't need to leave the lounge and head to the gate.

Very nice, indeed a good idea, but then the 2-story-layout of the A380 helps with it.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
You could hear every pax move their seat and snoring pax can become even more annoying.

Well, there is a downside to a quiet cabin. I would definitely prefer a nice monotonous engine sound here
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
From the friendly greeting, the rose, fast and easy immigration, nice looking terminal, Singapore impressed us from the start.

Agree, I have only seen the airport on my visit to SIN but I fully agree with you, my first impression was also a very positive one. Your pictures of Singapore really makes me want to go back there and explore the city as well. Looks really interesting.

Hello Blaž

Excellent TR. I enjoyed every moment of it. Very detailed and precise! I would love to go on the A380 some day. Did you find the Business class seats comfortable to sleep in? Almost everyone complains about the seats but I have never found them to be uncomfortable.

Hola Blaž,

A very interesting TR. Great to see the C-class on a LH A380, it looks very comfortable and huge, my only concern are the seats as when I have flown them, they are not really comfortable in the sleeping position as I keep sliding down.

The idea of having a lounge connected to the air bridges seems to be great and very convenient for passengers when boarding. So, are these C gates only used for A380s? Do First class passengers get to use the First class terminal or are they directed to the First class lounge? or both?

Great pictures and happy to know you got 7 hours of sleep... great to hear, I cannot manage more than 4 or 5, no matter how flat the seat is.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Roasted Goose with Red Cabbage and Potato Dumplings. I think I had the same meal a few years ago on MUC-JFK.

They do really not change their menus very often or maybe it is just bad luck. I had the same dish on my YVR-FRA flight three years ago.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Any flight is ok, but there is nothing like going into an airplane and knowing that when you come out, you will be in another country on another continent with completely different climate, culture,…

   Exactly my thought!

Hi Blaz,

very nice Tripreport.
The experience on the LH whale jet looks very good.
The food especially the classic one seems to be so tasty.
I just think the LH hardware is just not yet up-to-date with all the other big carriers with lie-flat seats.
You also showed us many nice impressions.

Thanks again for sharing.
Cheers

Hi Blaž,

Lucky you getting on the inaugural A380 flight, it seems you weren't disappointed. Bet it was a notch up from the AF experience last year!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
It's not the biggest of lounges, but since every A380 gate has its own lounge it is big enough.

What a nice idea, for each gate to have its own lounge and indeed direct boarding. The offerings seem good too, those sandwiches look very tasty.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Boarding is done via the automatic boarding gates, so you scan your own boarding pass and walk through the moving gates.

Was that a pretty smooth process? There is one automated gate at ZRH but it's just a test at the moment. I think it might take some time for this to catch on.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
woke up 7 hours later!

The seat must have been comfy then if you slept that long!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
After some circling we were cleared for our approach into SIN.

Judging by the map that was some pretty impressive circling. Those shots on approach into SIN are truly something, you whet our appetites by posting one on FB!

Happy flying

Yes, I've watched a documentary on National Geographics on how they built it and how many problems and chalenges they had to face. It was great seeing it for real and walking on top of the Skypark.

I was calculating about this and I agree, it does not seem to cover the whole difference between a Y and C class ticket. But on the other hand, if your company pays you a C class ticket for example, you can earn a lot of money this way.

Hi Blaž,

Thanks so much for sharing your experience onboard the inaugural Lufthansa A380 flight to Singapore!

I definately could appreciate your thoroughness in covering the service and product details on the ground and on board and its nice to hear that LH had offered a superior product that enabled you to have a wonderful 7 hours rest! The meal portions look abit small but their presentation certainly looks great. I am quite surprised that for an inaugural A380 route launch, there wasn't much of a celebration in FRA or onboard.

The LH roses offered to passengers were a really lovely touch though!

Lovely pictures of the Garden City. Nice to hear that you've enjoyed yourself and soaked up all the sights in Singapore. I can attest that its a great city.

Again, thanks very much for sharing your LH A380 experience. It was really enjoyable reading it and I like the following which you said best!

Actually Goose is served every year in NOV/DEC as a Christmas tradition, Menues in First and Business are changed every two months. Every time with a different cook ("star chef"),

Hello Blaž,

Very good story with some fantastic pics, especially from the arrival into SIN. Good to see that LH did not dissapoint you on their A380. The meals as well look very tasty. And of course congrats on getting on the inaugural!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
but since every A380 gate has its own lounge

Oh is it? I did not know.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Boarding is done directly from here, this is a nice concept, you don't need to leave the lounge and head to the gate.

That’s great and makes for a relaxed process I believe.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The flight was overbooked

Ha, I wonder by how many people. Considering LH has +500 seats/A380, I’d say that’s a healthy load

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
two volunteers to fly in economy class instead of business class for a compensation of 1500 Euros

You did not consider?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Interestingly arranged seat pocket contents.

I’d say messy iso organised…

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The captain came on the speaker and welcomed us on this 'First flight with the A380 to Singapore'. That was probably the only announcement about this being an inaugural flight.

At least something was said about it, I guess for you it was kinda special in many other ways as well?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I stopped to take this picture of the A343, a ground agent noticed me taking the picture and when I came by, she bowed and said 'Welcome to Singapore!'

What a nice welcome. Out of courtesy you bowed back I assume?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Hot, humid and wet

hey, you’re in the tropics my friend

Great read!

Flight overbooked?! Perhaps LH need something bigger than an A380 for this route
The A380 is indeed an incredibly quiet machine, and eerily so at times.
Great pictures of the approach and of the city, though its a shame the weather did not hold up.
I'm surprised LH didn't have anything special for the inaugural ex-FRA - there's been a lot of fanfare here.
I'm hoping to see a report for the return as well (SIN to MUC on the A343?).

The experience on the LH whale jet looks very good.

Hi Johannes, thanks for the comment. The A380 is a very impressive aircraft.

Quoting Luxair747SP (Reply 11):
I just think the LH hardware is just not yet up-to-date with all the other big carriers with lie-flat seats.

They might not be up to date with other carriers, but these seats were a pleasure to fly in back in 07 when I've first had the chance to try them and they are still a good way to travel today.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 12):
Lucky you getting on the inaugural A380 flight, it seems you weren't disappointed. Bet it was a notch up from the AF experience last year!

Hi Hannah, thank you for your feedback. This flight was a bit different from the AF ones, but they were all very interesting.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 12):
What a nice idea, for each gate to have its own lounge and indeed direct boarding. The offerings seem good too, those sandwiches look very tasty.

Sandwiches were very good indeed, reminded me of those I got on my LX flight from ZRH to ARN.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 12):
Was that a pretty smooth process? There is one automated gate at ZRH but it's just a test at the moment. I think it might take some time for this to catch on.

It was a very smooth process, I barley put my BP under the scanner and a green light flashed and the doors were opened.

Quoting infodesk (Reply 12):
Judging by the map that was some pretty impressive circling. Those shots on approach into SIN are truly something, you whet our appetites by posting one on FB!

Yes, this approach was one of the more interesting ones I've seen, thanks to all the clouds.

Yes, I agree that the portion is a bit small, but it was sufficient for me at that time. Maybe LH should consider a bit more substantial breakfast, at least in C.

Hi Blaž, great report!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
It's not the biggest of lounges, but since every A380 gate has its own lounge it is big enough.

Interesting that they've taken after the Emirates concept, although those lounges don't look proper at all, especially not for long haul flights. Any chance to go to a proper Business Lounge in the 1C-Terminal?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Entrance to the business class lounge, which also serves as priority gate area for passengers flying in first or business class and passengers with status.

Interesting, suppose the F-pax won't bother using it since they get the Mercedes ride from the FCT. How about *G, were they allowed to use this lounge?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The flight was overbooked and they were searching for two volunteers to fly in economy class instead of business class for a compensation of 1500 Euros

Now that's a killer deal! If I would've been let to earn my original C class mileage, I would've taken this offer right away!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Boarding is done via the automatic boarding gates, so you scan your own boarding pass and walk through the moving gates.

So no priority boarding, since everyone's in C?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
My seat in the second cabin, 24K,

Seat looks slight different from the seats found on the rest of the fleet. At least the seat upholstery is different.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
After dinner I went to the toilet and put my seat in the flat position, read a few pages of my book. I got a bit sleepy so I put my earphones in and…

Did you have a seatmate on this flight, well at least considering the high load factor in C?
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
… woke up 7 hours later!

That's really a substantial amount of sleep. Must've taken off some of the jetlag!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
More time to enjoy the view.

By looking at the pics, one tend to loose the sense of perspective over the size of the wing. Could might as well have been shot from an A319   Was this the case in real life too?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Landing at Singapore Changi airport.

It always seems to rain there...

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Every passenger disembarking was given a LH rose. Nice gesture for the first flight.

That's nice, did they give them to all pax this time or just the women and children (as usual. LH have gotten some criticism about this for being very sexist)?

All in all, seems like you had a great inaugural flight with Lufthansa, and a great flight in Business Class. Seat looked very comfy and the food delicious. Although I'm still under the impression that LX seem to have the upper hand on their Business Class, both when it comes to the lounge(s), the seats which are 180 degrees flat to the floor and the presentation of the food where the tray is clad in linen fabric. Still LH seem to offer a consistent product that is up to par with the competition.

Thanks for sharing, looking forward to the return part!

Any chance to go to a proper Business Lounge in the 1C-Terminal?

Hi Jonas, thanks for your feedback on my report. There is only a Senator lounge in this part and the business lounges at the gates. I did not notice any other lounges.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
How about *G, were they allowed to use this lounge?

Sure, all pax flying in F/C and all pax with status (either gold or silver). I noticed quite a lot of them heading down to the economy class escalator after boarding.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
So no priority boarding, since everyone's in C?

No, everyone just ques and board.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
Did you have a seatmate on this flight, well at least considering the high load factor in C?

Sure, but it was one I knew so no problems during the flight
Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
By looking at the pics, one tend to loose the sense of perspective over the size of the wing. Could might as well have been shot from an A319   Was this the case in real life too?

From this far back you don't get the real impression of how big the wing is, that is true. But it does look more massive than on other smaller aircraft from the last rows.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
It always seems to rain there...

Yes, it rained every day when I was there. The weather report went something like this: 'It is going to rain in some areas today, but we do not know where...' They can't forecast weather for more than three hours in advance, at least that's what I've heard.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
That's nice, did they give them to all pax this time or just the women and children (as usual. LH have gotten some criticism about this for being very sexist)?

From what I saw every PAX got one. It was easy to spot passengers from LH flight in the terminal and at immigration by the rose.

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):

LX seat is better, especially for solo travelers (the single seat on the right side), but as you've said LH offers a very consistent product and that is why I would not mind flying with them again.

From my seat near the gate I see quite a few people coming up and discussing the offer.

On AA if business class is oversold, they usually upgrade (complimentary of course!) to first class, at the gate. I have not seen voluntary or involuntary downgrades but I'm sure it happens.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
You have to take the escalator one floor down to reach the boarding gate for first and business class passengers. I love flying long haul. Any flight is ok, but there is nothing like going into an airplane and knowing that when you come out, you will be in another country on another continent with completely different climate, culture,…

Yes, ultra long haul flying is simply the best. Nothing like knowing you will get off the plane in another country, another climate, another language another culture. I remember back in the 1960's watching Pan Am 707's at JFK, and they were always the envy, because we knew they were going to some exotic port of the world.

Hi Blaž,

Great report about this special flight, good to hear you enjoyed it. The catering looks fine, I don't know why people complain about it. How was the taste?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The one interesting thing on the first leg was this Iran Air flight, making a fuel stop at Ljubljana on its way from Germany to Iran.

Do they do that regularly?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
It looks a bit ugly, but is very impressive.

Well, it depends on the perspective.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Interestingly arranged seat pocket contents.

That looks messy!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The outside window on the A380 is a similar size to all other aircraft, but the inner one on LH is a lot larger and gives you a very spacious feeling.

I don't like the A380 windows at all...

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Of course one of the best features on the A380 is the tail camera.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Fresh and modern looking cabin during our climb.

LH should have installed mood lighting, it really makes a difference.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
We were already over the Bay of Bengal.

Any turbulence?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
So quiet, that the noises inside the cabin become a bigger problem than the sound of the engines. You could hear every pax move their seat and snoring pax can become even more annoying.

Exactly my point.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
When we left Germany Qantas fleet was still grounded.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The only thing I would change would be the weather. Hot, humid and wet so not what I prefer

I found it very very humid this time - and it was even worse in Indonesia.

Quoting CaptainRed (Reply 6):
I would definitely prefer a nice monotonous engine sound here

GE90 sound is perfect.

Thanks for the writeup. I am glad you got to take the first flight of an LH 380 to SIN. However, in terms of service, it seemed way to mediocre (and LH) for me ... some observations:

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
A lot of sings for different gates/lounges. Gate C16 for our flight today.

= FRA is beginning to resemble CDG in this mess. Thankfully, the service professionals at CDG are infinitely better.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
t's not the biggest of lounges, but since every A380 gate has its own lounge it is big enough.

= Wow. That must be the emptiest lounge I have ever seen of LH!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
There were a few sandwiches available. I tried the 'Hot and Sweet chicken sandwich' and it was very good.

= Wow. That is an impressive spread by LH standards.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Hot towel service.

= Aah ... the beginning of the 'oh-so-familiar' skimpiness of LH.

As others have mentioned, very average - you'd have thought they would have taken the time to upgrade those crappy seats and improved their meal offerings.

Anyways, thanks for sharing.

Saludos,
A.

Hey SloAir,

Thank you for this great report. I liked the idea of putting the gate and the lounge at the same place, reminded of of TLV's old terminal 1, where business class passengers had a bus from their on gate inside the lounge to the airplane.

I must say the seats do not look great, but since you slept 7 hours on one of them it's probebly feels better then it looks.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

Zdravo Blaž,

How great to know that you got on board of an A380 inaugural flight to SIN. I envy you.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
reading the morning newspaper that featured an interesting article about Singapore (how appropriately)

Specially written for you.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The one interesting thing on the first leg was this Iran Air flight, making a fuel stop at Ljubljana on its way from Germany to Iran.

I wish IR had fifth freedom rights between Frankfurt and Ljubljana.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

I had similar experience last July.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Entrance to the business class lounge, which also serves as priority gate area for passengers flying in first or business class and passengers with status.

What a nice arrangement. Is the gate exclusively for LH or also other Star Alliance carriers with A380?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Here it is! The Whale Jet! The King! Lady Bee! Whatever you prefer

The Undiscovered.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The flight was overbooked and they were searching for two volunteers to fly in economy class instead of business class for a compensation of 1500 Euros.

Hmm, only downgrades? What about upgrades to First?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I think I had the same meal a few years ago on MUC-JFK.

Did it taste equally good?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I did not watch any on this flight, the NiceView Airshow was just fine for me.

A true A.netter you are!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
… woke up 7 hours later!

Wow, the seat must have been very comfortable.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
stopped to take this picture of the A343, a ground agent noticed me taking the picture and when I came by, she bowed and said 'Welcome to Singapore!'

That is what I call a great welcome!

Thank you for sharing this excellent report. I especially like the scenery of Singapore. I cannot wait to visit South East Asia myself next year.

Best wishes,
Suryo

Hello SloAir!

I really enjoyed this report, always nice to read about an A380 experience.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

It is exactly my same feeling, the excitement and little worry of what would it be like ¨at the other end¨

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
It’s just amazing and fascinating how we are now just like that at the other side of the world.

Yup! and with these Trip Reports is even amazing how you can tell the story of a looooong 12 hr flight in a few pictures
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
We parked next to LH A343 from MUC

I took that flight in 2008.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I really enjoyed my time in Singapore.

I did too, so much in fact that I am returning there next week, I will embark on a journey tomorrow BCN-DOH-HKG and on Wednesday we will fly to Singapore, really excited! Oh! BTW I stayed on the hotel next to the Chinese and Hindu temple you showed... it is just next door to the Chinese temple on the right hand of the picture. South East Asia Hotel in Bugis

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Blaž,

A very nice report. Did you know that this was indeed the inaugural A380 flight on the route when booking this or did you learn it afterwards? Anyway very nice, and a big boo for FRA and LH not really acknowledging it that much, at least SIN did much better job in that regard!

From my seat near the gate I see quite a few people coming up and discussing the offer.

Wow! I would've signed up for that faster than you can say "bump". For 1500 EUR in travel vouchers I'll gladly fly in a middle seat in economy between two guys the caliber of Helmut Kohl who spent the entire previous week eating Sauerkraut and swigging beersteins and should now be taking part in the EU's carbon credit trading scheme for all the methane they produce! It's a night flight and you were heading for a holiday it seems (so no business obligations right after arrival) so what do you need a business class seat and meal for, especially since you didn't seem to partake in the free flowing champers either is my reasoning!

Quoting LH4116 (Reply 23):
Did you have a seatmate on this flight, well at least considering the high load factor in C?

Well, considering C was overbooked and they were seeking volunteers for a downgrade of course he had a seatmate!

I wish IR had fifth freedom rights between Frankfurt and Ljubljana.

Hi Suryo, appreciate the comment. I wish IR had fifth freedom rights too, they fly from HAM and somewhere else in Germany I think and then on to Teheran.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):
What a nice arrangement. Is the gate exclusively for LH or also other Star Alliance carriers with A380?

I'm not sure, so far LH was the only A380 operator at FRA, it will be interesting to see where SQ will park their giant.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):
Hmm, only downgrades? What about upgrades to First?

I guess first was also full already.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 33):
Thank you for sharing this excellent report. I especially like the scenery of Singapore. I cannot wait to visit South East Asia myself next year.

Thank you, Suryo, for commenting and have a great trip to SE Asia next year!

Quoting MIAspotter (Reply 34):
I really enjoyed this report, always nice to read about an A380 experience.

Hi MIAspotter, it is nice to hear you have enjoyed the report.

Quoting MIAspotter (Reply 34):
I took that flight in 2008.

I took it on the way back, it was also a nice flight, but not as nice as the A380 one.

Quoting MIAspotter (Reply 34):
I did too, so much in fact that I am returning there next week, I will embark on a journey tomorrow BCN-DOH-HKG and on Wednesday we will fly to Singapore, really excited!

Have a great trip!

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 35):
Did you know that this was indeed the inaugural A380 flight on the route when booking this or did you learn it afterwards?

After they announced FRA-SIN service with the A380 I made a reservation for the 31st of October, but then noticed that the inaugural was on the 30th and changed the dates.

Quoting FlyingFinn76 (Reply 35):

:D I cannot give up my window seat as easily as you did on BOG-FRA   I think that they were talking about 1500 in cash, not in vouchers.

Superb report. Although I don't really like the A380 that much, I must admit it's a nice aircraft to fly on. However the C class cabin is absolutely huge...

That's a joke? For some people the price difference between Y and C class would have been more than 1500 EUR. I hope they paid the compensation in addition to refund the fare difference. Otherwise it's probably only a good offer for people who booked or upgraded on miles...

Yes, I was calculating and it did not seem to cover the price difference between economy and business class tickets. But it is quite good if you used miles or did not pay for the ticket...

This reminds me so much of my first LH A380 flight to JNB. It was very interesting, especially in business. If you thought any aircraft was quite, the A380 will make you rethink that.

Hi, Blaž!

that's a wonderful report you've created here. Finally the time to start my Sunday with breakfast and the LH A380 to SIN

It seems they perform great on these giant aircrafts. Don't you think it's a strange feeling to have such a large business class on board? Impressive to see it all being full, good job LH! Meals look fantastic, and I think your good sleep was possible by the quietness of the A380. It's amazing indeed. Now only pray for quiet neighbours on the next flight

Regards
Eric

Hi Blaž

Nice trip report, I enjoyed reading it! I'm glad you where able to catch the A380 to SIN.
Just a pitty they did not do anything special for the inaugural, but I guess the 388 is not an uncommon site in SIN (and FRA) anymore!

Greetings
Marc

Well I was in the last, smaller cabin and it did not feel any bigger than on any other aircraft. But walking along all those business seats on the upper deck was quite interesting.

Yes, you need some luck with that.

I agree, although there were quite some celebrations at SIN including 'German week', but unfortunately I did not went to check it out.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
This was one of my best sleeps onboard any aircraft.

That's where the A380 has the lead now. It's so quiet and virtually no vibration so you can actually sleep. As you say it's the cabin noise now that can be the problem. Easily sorted with some headphones.

This report makes me want to visit Singapore one day, especially on the A380.

Hi Blaž,

Ever since Finnair started their flights to Singapore in May this year I've been pretty interested about SIN as a destination. AY hasn't had anything but horribly expensive fares from Finland to Singapore though. Anyway your report gave a nice insight to the A380, Lufthansa and Singapore! Many really nice pictures included and seems you really enjoyed your flights!

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):

Since I've done a detailed report on LJU-FRA JP business class already, I will not go into too much detail about the first flight

Knowing JP has been going through some tough times lately - what was the load like on that flight?

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The flight was overbooked and they were searching for two volunteers to fly in economy class instead of business class for a compensation of 1500 Euros

Cash or travel vouchers?
No matter which one I would gladly have accepted, you could have used those monies for some serious flying.
Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
I stopped to take this picture of the A343, a ground agent noticed me taking the picture and when I came by, she bowed and said 'Welcome to Singapore!'

That would make me melt!

Thanks once again for sharing!

Regards,
717Flyer

Aren't all AY fares horribly expensive?
Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 45):

Only 4 PAX in business (5 out of 13 rows were designated as biz!), but it looked full in economy. FRA is one of the rare profitable routes for JP. But things are looking a bit more promising now.

Quoting 717Flyer (Reply 45):
Cash or travel vouchers?

I think it was cash.

Hi Blaž,

Nice report and pictures, thanks for sharing, of much interest to me having just booked myself on LH721 PEK-FRA in J, another LH A380 route.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
It's not the biggest of lounges, but since every A380 gate has its own lounge it is big enough.

- I'd seen one of these lounges when I flew FRA-JNB last year, never realised there was a lounge @ each A380 gate.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
The flight was overbooked and they were searching for two volunteers to fly in economy class instead of business class for a compensation of 1500 Euros. From my seat near the gate I see quite a few people coming up and discussing the offer

- Unless travelling on a company paid ticket and the offer was in cash, I have trouble seeing why anyone would take this up.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Main course – Roasted Goose with Red Cabbage and Potato Dumplings

- Not terribly exciting looking.

Quoting SloAir (Thread starter):
Scrambled Egg with Turkey Ham, Seasame Cookies, Leaf Spinach, Sauce Hollandaise, diced Tomatoes. Both meals came with Fruit Granola with chopped Pistachios.

- Again not a great visual disk, reduce the portion size and the hot part could have been on an economy tray downstairs.

Well I'm looking forward to trying LH J on the A380 but not counting on great food!

Cheers

Mark

I agree, if you did not pay for the ticket it can be worth it, but otherwise I don't think so...

Exactly, don't go on the flight starving. Although the taste of the food is not bad.

Enjoy your PEK-FRA flight!
