Intro
In response to ongoing industrial unrest over failed negotiations involving three unions, Qantas grounded its entire domestic and international fleet from 17:00 AEDT on 29 October 2011 to 20:00 AEDT on 31 October 2011. The grounding came into effect while my friend Satchmo and I were heading from Munich to London Heathrow on British Airways in order to connect to Qantas flight QF032 to Singapore...as a result, we had to book new flights on Turkish Airlines, arrived at the destination much later than planned and even lost our luggage. If you want to know all the details and the outcome, keep on reading.



Background
I early 2011 my friend Satchmo and I decided to go on a spotting trip to Asia in late October. We had been planning to visit Singapore and Kuala Lumpur from the very beginning and focused on getting on Qantas' A380 between LHR and SIN. I had flown Qantas before, but I wanted to increase the number of A380 carriers in my log to five. At a later date, we also decided to include Jakarta where we had never been before. Of course we tried to get as many new airlines and interesting types as possible and it took a while to create an exciting itinerary. Finally, we booked 10 flights operated by 8 different carriers (including four new ones) and reserved hotel rooms in Singapore (one night), Kuala Lumpur (one night), Jakarta (two nights) and Bangkok (one night). We exclusively combined one-way flights and one-way combos, so we had eight different flight reservations in the end. Here's what the preliminary itinerary looked like:

While Satchmo was planning to use our entire time at Jakarta for taking pictures, I decided to squeeze in a domestic day trip. I found an interesting combo on two new carriers and added three more flights:

Jakarta-Semarang
Semarang-Surabaya
Surabaya-Jakarta


Now I was looking forward to 13 flights on 10 different carriers - including 6 new ones - and 4 widebodies (details to follow in the next parts). At that point of time I couldn't imagine that I would end up on 14 flights, 7 new airlines and 5 widebodies.

The early morning flight from Munich to London on British Airways A320-232 G-EUUN (new registration) was totally eventless. We had already checked in online for both flights, so we simply had to drop off our luggage. After our arrival at Heathrow, we decided to do some spotting from the Terminal 5 entrance area.

About two hours before departure, we took the train to Terminal 3. After leaving the underground walkways and before entering the terminal building, we had a look at the departures screen. And we stared in disbelief when we read "QF032 Singapore/Sydney cancelled".  Wow!  Confused"Do you see the same as me?", Satchmo asked after a few seconds. "Yes", I simply replied. Remarkably, I didn't feel angry and remained totally calm. I immediately assumed that there must be a technical problem with our Qantas A380 because we had seen both planes parked in normal positions during taxi. At the same time I started fearing that we would have to spend at least one night at Heathrow and therefore would miss our independently booked flight from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur.

Then we entered the terminal building and noticed that all Qantas check-in counters were closed. A British Airways employee approached us and asked if we were BA passengers booked on a Qantas flight. We denied and told him that we were Qantas passengers, but we took the chance to ask what happened. The man explained that Qantas had stopped operating due to strike action. We were surprised, but remained optimistic and assumed that such a strike would be limited to a few hours as it had been the case several times in the past months. Then the BA employee directed us to a group of Qantas agents who were handing out badly printed sheets of paper. We tried to talk to them to find out what exactly was going on, but they shook their heads and just referred to the hand-out. "We don't know more about the situation." No more explanations, no assistance - it was a shame that passengers were entirely left to themselves.  thumbsdown   thumbsdown   thumbsdown  Here's what we got:



It was shocking to read that it was unknown when operations would be resumed. However, what caught our special attention was the remark that we could book a new flight and would get reimbursed afterwards - everything else on the sheet was totally useless. Then we went to a desk with Qantas staff in another corner of the hall and asked them to confirm the suggestion on the printout. They did so and we started thinking about possible flight options. Satchmo suggested to go straight to Singapore Airlines, but that's what many others had already done - there was a huge queue consisting of countless people in the SQ area. Apart from that, I had already flown on SQ's A380 and 77W.

While walking through the check-in hall, we passed a Turkish Airlines sign and I immediately said: "Why not try Turkish?" It was a carrier which both of us hadn't flown on yet. Satchmo wasn't as euphoric as me and suggested to try Etihad Airways first. Unlike Satchmo, I had already flown on Etihad (A330-200), but a trip on the carrier's A340-500/600 or A330-300 from Heathrow would have been acceptable. However, we soon found out that Etihad Airways was operating from Terminal 4 and we concluded that we would lose too much time by moving over there.

So we went to a Turkish Airlines ticket counter, shortly explained our awkward situation and asked: "Can you fly us to Singapore today?" A friendly young agent quickly checked the possible options. "Of course!", he said and smiled. We were surprised to hear that the flight to Istanbul would already depart in about an hour - earlier than our Qantas flight would have left! However, the journey on Turkish Airlines would involve a transfer time of several hours and we would arrive in Singapore in the afternoon - more than seven hours later than originally planned. Anyway, it was still better than being stranded with all negative consequences. The agent also told us that we could leave Heathrow in the late afternoon, but the transfer time at Istanbul would shrink to about an hour. "I wouldn't recommend that", he said.

Of course we were expecting that TK would charge an astronomical sum for such a one-way ticket, but we were positively surprised that it would cost "just" £792 (roughly €950) per person. "What aircraft types are involved?", I asked. "It's an A340 to Istanbul and an A330 to Singapore", the agent said which sounded really good to me. The agent asked if Qantas hadn't offered to rebook us and we denied, referring to the sheet of paper. He was really surprised about that: "We would never do that!"

We finally agreed to buy the ticket, but then it suddenly sprang to mind that we didn't have our (through-checked) luggage! The agent told us to pick it up first and promised to hold our reservation for the time being. So we headed back to the Qantas desk where we had been before and explained our situation. The staff members told us that it would be impossible to get our luggage out of the storage area immediately. However, they said that Turkish Airlines should just enter our luggage tracking numbers into the system and the bags would be transferred. That didn't sound promising, but what would have been the alternative?

So we went back to the Turkish Airlines counter where another agent was on duty now. We shortly explained our situation and the agent confirmed that it wouldn't be a problem to get the luggage transferred to Turkish Airlines. Then we finally bought the new tickets and the agent told us to check in immediately. For the first time ever, we had paid a walk-up fare - and I guess the Turkish Airlines agents were happy about selling these full fare tickets at the last minute.  Yeah sure

We must have been among the last passengers to check in for flight TK1980, no other people were present in that area. The friendly agents quickly issued our boarding passes and I was surprised that we still got a two-seater (window and aisle) on the A340 to Istanbul. Unfortunately, a center seat and an aisle seat had been assigned to us on the A330 to Singapore, but we were confident to get that problem solved at Istanbul.
The check-in agents looked a bit confused at first when we showed them our British Airways luggage tags. They entered the numbers into the system, but told us to contact the dispatcher at the gate to ensure that the bags make it onto the plane.

We had no time to lose and immediately headed to security. However, numerous checkpoints were staffed, so we could pass relatively quickly. The gate was totally crowded, but we didn't want to sit down anyway and kept standing near the service desk, awaiting the arrival of the dispatcher.

The dispatcher - who turned out to be the nice guy from the sales desk - finally showed up and explained that our bags wouldn't fly to Istanbul with us on the same plane. "It's not enough time to get them", he said and added that the bags would be loaded onto one of the next flights to Istanbul. I wanted to know more about the procedure and the dispatcher explained that British Airways ground handlers would have to deliver the bags to Turkish Airlines due to an entry in the "worldwide system". Well, that didn't make me overly optimistic.

Business Class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members were invited to board first, but numerous Economy Class passengers were either trying to get on board immediately or blocking the way. The situation only improved after a second announcement and interference by the gate agents.

Friendly flight attendants provided a nice welcome when we finally stepped on board. The plane was equipped with modern and comfortable seats:

The flights attendants passed through the aisles with trolleys and offered English and Turkish newspapers, but I didn't take one. Safety card and inflight magazine (which also contains an IFE guide):



That's what enthusiasts really appreciate - but I found some minor mistakes, as usual:

What's meant is the 737-900ER, of course. The information was correct in the Turkish text, by the way.

Now it was time to explore the Planet entertainment system. Main menu:


The audio/video on-demand system offers a choice between up to 350 films and short programs, a children’s channel, an audio book channel, a news channel, an airshow channel, 20 games and some 600 music CDs. Numerous features inform about the company, its fleet and destinations. Additionally, you can watch takeoff and landing on two cameras. Inflight connectivity enables passengers to send and receive text messages and e-mails. Even more options are available on the A330-300s and the 777-300ERs.

The weather forecasts on the news channel were totally outdated, but other news were updated every hour. Here's an article about a turbulent showdown between Qantas staff and management before the grounding:



Of course I watched the airshow channel most of the time. We were cruising not very far from my hometown when I took this picture:



Drinks were offered for the first time almost an hour after takeoff which was too late in my opinion. Directly afterwards, lunch was served. Unlike most other carriers, Turkish Airlines distributes menu cards on intra-European flights:



Famous caterer DO&CO calls itself "The Gourmet Entertainment Company" - and the options on the card sounded indeed very promising:



I ordered the chicken medallions and got a great looking tray - the box on the right contained butter, cream cheese and crackers:


Even though I didn't like the beans in olive oil, everything else tasted very good. Unfortunately, the chicken was too dry. Anyway, it was an impressive meal.

Coffee and tea were offered after lunch, but when a flight attendant was about to serve us, she ran out of supply. She returned some minutes later, but left us out. We stopped her some time later when she was passing again and told her about that. She immediately apologized and finally served us tea. Unfortunately, lemons weren't available any more now.

The plane's interior was in good condition and the cabin had been cleaned well before departure, but later in the flight I discovered paper towels lying on the floor in front of a rear lavatory. Probably the crew members simply hadn't noticed that yet.

By the way, Turkish Airlines didn't pass the "PlaneHunter Ginger Ale Test" - that drink was neither available on this flight nor on the longer one.

TC-JDN touched down smoothly after a flying time of 3 hours and 39 minutes and taxied to a remote parking position. There weren't any empty gate positions during the early evening rush at IST:

Transfer at Istanbul Atatürk Airport
After leaving the bus, we went straight to a transfer desk in order to check the status of our luggage and to ask for better seats on the flight to Singapore. The rather indifferent mid-aged agent told us that there were no two-seaters (window and aisle) left, so we asked for two aisle seats and gladly accepted 12G and 14G (row 13 doesn't exist). We were hoping that the agent would tell us that our luggage was already on the way to Istanbul, but he simply said "It's in the system." Finally, I explained our situation and asked whether we could get lounge access during our long layover - I even offered to pay a fee. "No", the agent simply replied.

The transit area and all restaurants were totally crowded, so we started searching for lounges accessible for a fee and indeed discovered several ones. The TK agent could at least have told us about those.  Yeah sure After a quick comparison we decided to visit the Millennium Lounge which is used by numerous airlines. We had to pay about €20 per person, but it was worth it.

We were indeed able to relax for a few hours after all the hassle. Later in the evening I returned to the transfer desk to find out whether our luggage had meanwhile arrived at Istanbul. Another agent was on duty now, but he didn't show more interest than his colleague. "It's in the system", he simply replied to my question. I asked for the exact location of the bags, but only got the same answer again. So either he really didn't know or he didn't want to tell the truth.  Embarrassment

We left the lounge about 45 minutes before departure and soon found ourselves in a crowded gate area once again. A330-203 TC-JNE, a 2006-built frame, was being prepared for our flight to Singapore:

We were glad to get one of the five frames which were delivered to Turkish Airlines factory fresh between 2005 and 2006. These planes are equipped with 250 seats (J22/Y228), while two ex-Qatar Airways frames (TC-JNF/JNG) are equipped with 281 seats (J22Y259).

We tried to find out more about our luggage once again, but didn't get new answers. We simply had to hope for the best. The boarding process was as chaotic as in London - as soon as premium passengers were invited to board, all kinds of people jumped up and headed towards the door which was quite interesting to watch.  Wink

Luckily, the seat to my left remained empty despite the high load factor. Not bad considering that we had booked the flight in the morning…

After boarding had been completed, the purser made a welcome speech and announced among other things that the flight crew consisted of four captains. However, the plane didn't start moving anytime soon. About 30 minutes after boarding, the captain on duty announced a delay, but I didn't understand his explanation. Some minutes later, I asked a flight attendant who was passing by. He referred to "Air traffic" - probably he meant traffic congestion, but that was hard to believe because it was almost midnight.

We finally left the gate 48 minutes behind schedule. During taxi, the captain came on the intercom again and referred to "loading issues". Well, I was hoping that loading our luggage had caused the delay...  Wink

Unfortunately, I failed to take a decent picture of the funny safety video starring Manchester United players Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher, Chris Smalling, Nani and twins Rafael and Fabio da Silva. After spending 22 minutes on various taxiways, we finally rolled onto the runway and lifted off into the night sky after a powerful takeoff run. Sharp right turn:

When the crew distributed headphones, the flight attendant in my aisle ran out of supply. She returned some minutes later, but left out my row - and no, it wasn't the same flight attendant who hadn't served us tea at first on the other flight.  Wink Well, I didn't speak up this time because I wasn't planning to use headphones anyway.

Shortly afterwards, it was time to choose a meal. Green menu cards on TK1980, red ones on TK066:



All these options sounded very promising again:



I ordered the chicken fillet with mushroom ravioli and got a great looking tray once again:


The meat was fine, but the ravioli were a bit dry this time. Anyway, most items tasted very good - except for the artichoke, but that's due to my personal taste. No doubt, this was another impressive meal.

After dinner, I managed to find some sleep. When I fully woke up again, we were (smoothly) cruising over the Bay of Bengal:


What I noticed was a lack of drink runs, but it wasn't a big problem for me as I could leave my aisle seat whenever I wanted to.

We touched down after a flying time of 9 hours and 44 minutes and arrived at the gate 11 minutes ahead of schedule - not bad considering our delay at Istanbul. Nice colorful tail on the right - can you name the airline?

Even though we had arrived 7 hours later than originally planned, we were glad about being there - it could have been much worse. Now we were hoping to get our luggage...


Moments of Anger and Frustration
The moment of truth came after passing immigration. We had been quite confident that our luggage would show up on the belt...but it didn't. When it became clear that our luggage was lost, I felt annoyed and frustrated for the first time on that journey. Many new clothes, mobile phone battery charger, camera battery charger, shaver - everything was lost.  mad 
So we had to file a lost luggage report in a dedicated office. A friendly lady entered our data into her computer and we couldn't believe it when she said: "Your bags are still in London." So why was a handling company employee in Singapore able to find that out immediately, while several Turkish Airlines ground staff members in Istanbul had been totally clueless?  confused 

After filing the report, the lady asked us where the bags should be delivered to. We explained that we would leave Singapore again on the next morning and only stay one night at Kuala Lumpur. It would have been possible to send the bags to Jakarta, but we weren't convinced that it would work out in the end. And even if - we needed new clothes as soon as possible, most preferably now and not after another two days. So we decided to buy new clothes, a suitcase and other stuff in Singapore later in the evening and told the lady that our luggage should be sent to our home addresses. At that point of time I wasn't confident that I would see my suitcase again.

Meanwhile, a German in the 20s had shown up and started yelling around. He had flown Qantas from Frankfurt to Singapore and his luggage was lost, too. Allegedly, he had been told earlier that the luggage had been loaded onto his plane. He was really mad and loudly asked the same question several times: "What shall I do now?" He claimed to be an experienced traveller, but he didn't behave as such. We quickly told him about our situation and our decision and then left the office to avoid another outburst of rage...  Wink

Singapore Spotting...and Shopping
First of all, I went to an information desk and asked which nearby mall we should go to in order to buy new stuff. Satchmo had meanwhile tried to talk to a Qantas representative, but hundreds of people had had the same idea, so he didn't line up. We concluded that it wouldn't make sense to talk to Qantas now - we would claim for our expenses at a later point of time anyway.

Before leaving the airport, we had a look at the Terminal 1 observation deck. Watching some nice planes turned out to be a good therapy. This is Myanmar Airways International A321-111 F-GYAZ - leased from French carrier Air Méditerranée:

After gathering new energy, we took a taxi to Tampiness Mall and started a major shopping tour. Unfortunately, it took us several hours to find all we needed. We finally arrived at the Changi Village Hotel in the late evening - and after a few hours of sleep it was time to get ready again for our early morning flight to Kuala Lumpur. Story to be continued...



Conclusion & Outcome
We missed the desired Qantas' A380 and arrived much later than planned, but flying Turkish Airlines turned out to be very pleasant. I had wanted to try TK for a long time and now I know that all the positive reports about the airline's on-board product are justified. We enjoyed good seating comfort and decent inflight entertainment on both the A330-200 and the A340-300. The DO&CO catering was impressive in terms of quantity and quality, even though there were a few weaknesses. Flight attendants were friendly and helpful on both flights, but the ground staff members at Istanbul could have been a bit more customer-orientated. I’m still wondering if these agents told me the truth when I asked them about the status of our luggage. Nevertheless, I can only recommend Turkish Airlines.

As for the Qantas grounding: I don't want to judge whether it was justified or not and who exactly is to blame. From a passenger's point of view it's totally irrelevant who is responsible for a flight cancellation. What counts is that an airline takes care of its passengers - and that's what Qantas did not do. All passengers were left to themselves without any assistance which must have been a nightmare for inexperienced travellers and families with small children. What a shame!  thumbsdown 

Our luggage arrived at home two days ahead of us. According to the tags, the suitcases made an interesting trip. Even though we had asked to send the bags to our home addresses straight from Heathrow, the luggage was flown to Singapore via Istanbul on Turkish Airlines two days after our departure and then directly transferred to the next Singapore Airlines flight to Munich. Sounds logic, doesn't it?  Yeah sure

More than two months after returning home, Qantas finally reimbursed all our expenses caused by the grounding (new tickets, lounge access, clothes, suitcase). However, it had been quite complicated to send in all the scanned receipts due to mailbox limitations. While we were waiting for the money, each of us received an e-mail with a voucher worth €190 for future Qantas flights (valid until 12/12). And finally, Qantas paid an additional compensation of €600 per person based on EU regulations which was greatly appreciated. Actually I have already used my voucher to book a new flight from London to Singapore on Qantas' A380. Let's see whether I will get on one of these birds this time - and hopefully I will be able to meet user Initious who I had missed due to the heavily delayed arrival at Singapore. Last but not least, we also got full mileage credit for the Turkish Airlines flights which is another positive effect of the mess. So I would even say we gained more than we lost.

However, I'm sure thousands and thousands of other Qantas passengers haven't gained anything and instead suffered badly. Those may never consider choosing Qantas again. It remains to be seen how much damage has been caused by the grounding in the long run.

Food seems good down the back in Y Class as do the seats . The colour and pattern is not that different from the old A310 interiors when I used to fly TK LHR-IST on them . I love them .

Shame about the bags but as a regular flyer yourself you know these things are to be expected sometimes. Just have to make the best of it and deal with it. I never let these things spoil my enjoyment.

Nice that you answered a question about the amenity kits. I got one of those at the door before flying TK J class but then got the upgraded Bvlgari one .

All in all you mirror my experience of TK of the years and more importantly over the last 18 months. Certainly an airline to watch in future. Shame you didnt get the TK lounge you would have loved that I assure you.

First of all congrats that you find last minute such a decent flight combo.
TK service looks on both segments of your journey excellent and the DO&CO catering looks as tasty as on my recent TK flights.
Im also surprised that the IFE on this rather old system is so advanced.
Finally good that you got all the money back and even more from Qantas.
If your suitcase would be a *A miles collector, it could have status soon.

Yes, you're right. But it can be really frustrating. It didn't bother us any more during the rest of the journey, though.

What we got was great indeed. But Lari (Lufthansa747) who has regularly flown on that route in the last few months always refers to a lack of variety.

Great report.

Very interesting to read how QF handled the strike and the (no-) options they assisted you with. It is always nice to learn that even one of the airlines that seem to work pretty well leaves the passengers unassisted at the airports... very sad and disappointing, if this would happen in other carriers like the last airline I have flown, IB, many people would think it is their way of handling these situations, which does not seem to be the case in the last strikes they have faced by pilots... Interesting, at least you got your money back and some extras as well.

I am always worried about luggage being lost when cancellations appear and this seemed to be the case in your flights... did you ask them how was their SQ flight?  

TK seems to be the carrier to fly these days. Those meals in Y look really nice presented and according to your report they tasted really nice as well. Excellent and for the price at the last minute I would consider it a bargain really.

Yes, much better than narrowbodies which are also used on the route. But a brand new A330-300 or a 77W would have been even better.

Sorry for the luggage, but you have made a BIG mistake. On the other hand, the Turkish Airlines ground crew in LHR should have told you the right procedure...

In most check-in systems, the ground crew can't access the status of the luggage. They will only see if the bag is loaded into the system, which was. So no fault to the ground crew.

The right way to handle the situation, giving the amount of transfer time in IST, would have been to clear customs in IST and to contact their "Lost-and Found" department in the arrival hall. These agents can access the baggage tracing system and further more, can send an urgent request message to rush the luggage on the next available flight (as there was such one) to IST to rejoin you on the SIN sector.

Lucky you got your bags. AIR CANADA lost mine and never found it ever again. It was a nightmare and they ripped me off in regards to compensation. I sued and got another $500; total of $1,600 the maximum.

If you pay with a credit card you are automatically insured and home insurance covers some losses too.

PH, I was absorbed in your story and I felt like traveling along with you and experiencing the frustration of losing my luggage. I really admire your continuous calmness in the whole situation. Believe me or not, I got myself worked up while reading towards the bl***y CEO of Qantas who simply and rigorously abandoned people who brought business to QF and herewith successfully ruined the airlines’ reputation built after a decade just in one day! The remark of TK’s dispatcher just confirmed that. I just hope he would be financially fully responsible for the loss Qantas suffered after his short-sighted decision.

What an interesting trip report! It was a great read and I'm sorry for your experience with QF, like you said, I can't imagine those passengers with small children during that mess! Shame. It's a good thing that you got reimbursed though and I hope your 2nd try to catch the QF A380 would turn out successful this time  

It's great to hear that TK offered a great product and service. Gotta love those front view cameras! The meals look impressive, although it's a shame how the TK agents @ IST treated you.

a very entertaining trip report -- great story, great pics -- but nothing else was to be expected after you first told us about you taking this trip. I believe those flights alone will stay in your memory forever as this was a very peculiar (even unparalleled?) situation in the aviation business, and are it not those special things we look for when travelling?

Qantas ground handling at LHR really looks appalling in this situation. It seems they were kind of left alone by headquarters in Australia, but leaving many (unseasoned) travellers alone with making new travel arrangements leaves a lot to be desired.

Nevertheless, it is great you were able to try TK and also fly another widebody on a intra-European flight. I tried Turkish once about two years ago on DUS-IST and IST-MUC and was very pleasantly surprised. It is good to see they keep it up. Meals and the amenity kit on IST-SIN look great - both remind me of my recent flights on TAM. Also both airlines offer substantial hot meals on their medium-length flights. I guess from your pictures that pillows and blankets were not provided on LHR-IST? Also, it seems that the ground product of TK is not too bad when you disregard the missing details of your luggage.

Well Well Well. That turned out to be a bit different for you guys. Well handled and good to keep calm as possible.

Pretty cool to see yet more positive words said about TK and rightly so. Good choice. My personal experience is limited to a MAN-IST-MAN but enjoyable never the less.

I agree with your feedback on the food judging from your pictures. Both sectors looked to offer up really tasty options and so well presented. Real Silverware or that metal look plastic? (Dare I say Faux).

It's nice you show us pictures from both your hand and also from Satchmo.

I'm glad to hear you made it to SIN in the end and have now been fully reimbursed, even a few little extras like the miles on TK. Well, you deserve it for your Inconvenience. Oh, and the €600.

Qantas really handled that situation very badly. Like you said, strikes or other extrordinary circumstances can happend to all airlines, but it's the way an airline deals with them that makes the difference. Good that you guys were able to get onto a TK flight quickly, and knew how to deal with these things. But you are experienced travellers. I wonder how Average Joe would have handled the situation and how they would have dealt with all the extra expenses.

The TK experience does look good, on the other hand. Reading these good stories about them A.net recently is definately an incentive to try them once.

I was surprised by that who 'cheap' that fare, especially for a one way trip. Some random searches in Amadues that there indeed a few carriers now offering 'affordable' oneway fares.

You should stay two days due to the layout of the airport - one day Garuda, the other day for the rest. Spotting locations are great! Well, you should add a third day for a day trip. How about 732 and 739?

Great to see another of your reports up Udo. That was a great read indeed.

A cancellation like that is not cool when you have a tight time and plans that rely on making a flight, but if it had been me I would have been overjoyed. The indifference of staff at LHR was bad, and I always feel nervous about the promise of 'reimbursement' but it all seemed to work out fine for you.

Great compensation, and quite surprised about them reimbursing you for lounge access (quite a nice looking lounge for the good price - was time unlimited?) but I suppose you could have purchased their flight for the convenience on non-stop service. Bit annoying about bags, probably a good idea just to get them sent home.

Thought TK food looked great. and quite true to the country. Nice.

It was certainly a drastic move, but as time has shown, it was the correct and only way to get the issue sorted. His actions allow you to keep flying with QF. Passengers might have been angry at the time, and that is totally understandable, but the polls clearly showed that the majority of the Australian population supported the move for the long term survival of our airline.

I am happy that TK were able to come to the rescue, and admire the smart thinking of the OP about seeking a non direct airline to keep out of lengthy and probably unsuccessful queues of the other major airlines.

What a frightful start to a journey. But luckily you are a seasoned traveller and could quickly start making alternate arrangements. The news reports showed scenes of angry and confused passengers stranded everywhere. Fortunately you were able to make an instant booking for same day travel. Congratulations. I won't say what I think of Joyce's (Qantas CEO) handling of the situation.

(I see now what you meant about arrows in your comment on Sultanils trip report. )

It is good to see that the TK ground staff at LHR were prepared to help out and that the flights themselves were comfortable. The meals look quite colourful and appetising, despite your discovering that some portions were a bit dry.

Shame about the bags staying in London rather than catching up with you in SIN. I can imagine that it would have been a pain claiming compensation.

Wow. Pretty impressive report and quite the story on your ordeal. I do think you handled it pretty well and cannot believe QF just "outsourced" its responsibilities to each individual passenger. We on A.Net are experienced travelers and can handle these things - imagine what the poor people had to go through. This is COMPLETELY unacceptable and really turns me off to ever make an attempt and try QF.

But, I believe everything happens for a reason - and am glad this was an excuse for you to try the usually excellent Turkish.

PS2: The TK agents may not be lying ... given how your bag was tagged, it might show that your bag was in the system but not yet scanned ...

PS3: That is the best YCL kit I have ever seen - even JCL of MANY airlines should take note!

Excellent and intriguing at the same time. Ever since the news of the Qantas grounding was spread, we were all curious what the outcome of your flight that day would be. Here’s the very nice result! It’s a shame indeed that QF left all it’s pax in the cold that day. Being a more frequent and experienced traveller, you try to work your way around it but I imagine that for most other travellers it must’ve been hell on earth...
I think you made a good decision on choosing TK, they promised and delivered (look at those meals!). They really deserve to be in the ‘top list’ imo.

I can't believe that Qantas just left you high and dry in Heathrow. It's not acceptable to just say "rebook yourself and we'll pay after the event". What if you didn't have enough money to rebook a long-haul flight? Qantas should have dealt with the rebookings as it was they who cancelled the fights. Mind you, you probably wouldn't have ended up getting such an interesting route to SIN if they had (not to mention the extra miles) so it all worked out well in the end.

Shame about your luggage not making it with you but at least you got it back!

Looking forward to the next part of this series.

Very nice TR. Oops about QF, what a horrible start to your holidays! You made a good choice flying with TK. I flew with them from MAN (TK1996) transferring to HKG (TK070) on one of their B737-800 / B777-300ER. The service on board was very good and I still have their amenity kit bag as I havent used any of the contents. Your food on your flight to SIN is the exact same as what I had on my HKG flight when I flew with them on 27 Dec. The apple strudel was too rubbery i remember and the breakfast cake thing on the main dish was weird - ive never eaten anything like that before. They also provide bottled water for everybody too. I should have made a TR but I am lazy ^^

I know exactly what you are saying about TK ground staff - they show a non-chalent expression. Just before boarding my flight at the gate (gate 208 - the SIN flight was actually boarding from 209 and I watched the numerous passengers boarding) they made a lame attempt to answer my question, i.e is the seat next to me free, if it is not can I change. Sorry flight full. The flight was not full and I had an empty seat next to me!

The safety video is a bit silly in my opinion and pretty cringe worthy! TK are a good airline and even with your 5 hour stopover they actually start boarding 2 hours before departure. THey have those individual security scanners at each gate and you wait in a holding area.

anyway, glad you enjoyed your trip and you got your luggage in the end.

It has been very interesting for me to read this Trip Report . You have had quite a bad start to your trip . I personally think that QF have tried their best to help all passengers . I still remember that I texted you and told you about the grounding of QF .Good to know that you have taken Turkish Airlines to SIN .They look like a very nice carrier to me . They sure have become much better over the last few years . The meals you have eaten look very tasty . The 20€ entrance fee for the Lounge was worth it . At least you got full mileage as a compensation and you had the chance to fly with TK . That is at least something to happy about. I am very looking forward to the other upcoming parts of your TR series . Keep up the good work .

Ever since the TK crash at AMS in 2009, most people here think of TK as an airline that doesn't take maintenance to seriously, and with badly trained pilots. I used to ask them why TK wasn't blacklisted if they were that bad; now I've got a better argument!

Excellent report, and one hell of a story!

I have never experienced the feeling of a walk-up ticket purchase, with a choice too! How amazing!

Too bad you could not get on the Qantas A380, as their Y product is excellent. But it seems your alternate plans on Turkish Airlines turned out for the much better!

This is the first time that anything out of Turkish Airlines grabbed my full attention! Minus the luggage issues -in which the QF fiasco is also partly to blame- TK quickly and professionally took you over and offered you an alternative option to your final destination. That, the menus on short-hauls, and the unbelievably great looking food you were fed on your flights! I swear, DO&CO needs to open restaurants all over the world! Truly world class!

And also that amenity kit! It looks quite big in the picture. Is it?

Perhaps i really need to give Turkish another thought, and maybe fly them once

Thanks for an excellent report with excellent pictures !

Very bad handling of Qantas and I'm sure this will leave a lasting impression on passengers that were affected on those days.

Great to hear that you finally flew Turkish Airlines and it seems they lived up to their reputation ie very good in flight service, great food and poor ground handling in IST.

Very good that they had seats for your just an hour later and that you still had empty seats next to you. Fare seems quite reasonable for such a last minute purchase. Too bad you didn't get to fly on a 77W!

Nice to see you are going back to SIN again to try the QF 380. There could some more interesting flights from there again perhaps ?   It seems the compensation from QF was quite generous as it should be for what you experienced.

It sounds like you had quite an ordeal with Qantas but at least you arrived in time for your connecting flights & you got reimbursed. I had a nice flight with them the other day though that was just a short domestic hop.

TK's product looks great. I love the amenity kit & the menu. It would be nice to see them fly to AKL (or SYD at least) so I could give them a go sometime.

I'm looking forward to your next report as well as the QF A380 one once you get around to it.

Another great report you have got there! It was a very impressive read!
Bad to hear what happenned with QF. However, as pointed out. What may be the reason, they are still responsible for their passengers what they failed in big time. This would be a reason for me to put QF on my not-to-fly-again list.
TK really did save the day. Quite surprised to see the new seats on the 343's. Did not expect that, the second snack service on the LHR-IST leg impressed me as well. the IST-SIN leg looks to be amazing as well! seems like an airline to try out one day.

Gosh, what a story. Yet even when things go wrong, it doesn't put you off going back for more! It's appalling the way you received no help from QF. As you say, imagine inexperienced travellers trying to sort such a situation out. I would not have expected this behaviour from such a carrier. Still, every cloud has a silver lining and TK certainly lived up to their inflight reputation, even if the luggage issue was a sore disappointment. The meals, the seats, the amenity kit - it all looks wonderful.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us PlaneHunter    I must admit that I found it rather ironic for TK helping out during an irrop. It usually happens the other way round  Some of the LHR staff are really good though and kudos to them for offering you a viable alternative. Comfort Class (Y+) and long-haul Y share the same Amnety kit and the contents are impressive compared to what most airlines offer these days. TK is improving and the hard product/catering is really competitive as you have explained in your report. Cabin service has still room for improvement. The real let down is usually TGS (Turkish Ground Services) in IST. Anyway, I hope you get a chance to try out the new IST lounge on your next visit and thanks again for your detailed report.

But TK fills the gap nicely, so it looks like.
Well, I´am not that really keen with these strange coloured TK seaters but I know there are more strange colours out there.

Excellent report, thanks for sharing. What an experience. But TK seems great. Too bad for the bags, but it doesn't surprise me. These thinks rarely work. However the information given to you was inacceptable.

I was very surprised why QF did all passengers rebook themselves on their own. This must have caused horrible costs, while if QF would have taken care of rebooking the passengers they could have used agreements. On the plus side, they clearly told the passengers what will be reimbursed and didn't gave vague instructions which would have led to passengers not knowing what financial risks they were taking in buying a new ticket. Nice to see that they paid EU compensation, too.

thanks for the great report, like others here I've been waiting for it eagerly!

Firstly, what bad news, and not the ideal way to find out either. They should have had some staff member onsite rebooking people, instead of hoping the customer can do it - not everyone even has that kind of credit available. Still, you had a good idea to try Turkish instead of following the hoards to SQ! They seem like a great service-oriented airline - whilst in the air at least! The ground staff could learn something about customer service. Or perhaps it was more the TK IT guys not fully linking their databases... Whatever, it turned out ok in the end. I've had missed luggage before, the worst was my wife 2 weeks before our wedding. Route: NWI-AMS-JNB, out luggage arrived a week late into South Africa, having been via Bergen! At least the wedding dress was carried in hand luggage, but the bridesmaids' dresses arrived just in time!

Those food offerings on both legs look very tasty, and quite substantial

An amazing story - you certainly picked the wrong day for your QF A380 experience! Very bad from Qantas to leave you on your own like that, but props to TK for coming in to rescue you and not causing that much inconvenience either. Loosing your bags for bugger, but I think it was a small price to pay for the fact that you still managed to get to SIN in time for your next flight and thus your plans at large weren't disrupted too badly.

Hi PH,

One can not say that I read this trip report - it was more like I gulped it down because I was so curious to know about how Qantas sorted out the situation - and most of all - about your Turkish Airlines experience. These ingredients for sure made up a great read, thanks!

This pretty much sums up everything that Turkish Airlines stands for. Having flown HEL-IST-DXB-IST-HEL with them in February last year I have nothing bad to say,

Yes, this is one of the things that made me fall in love with Turkish Airlines. Not only were they my first airline having menu cards (and meal choices) in economy - plus they offered a nice amenity kit and headphones on a flight of only 3 hours.

I was really looking forward to read about that story and now I have almost missed it   And what an interesting first part it was.

Looks like you really chose the wrong day for your flight with Qantas. I can only barely imagine how you must have felt after seeing the cancelled-message on the screen. I think the way the QF staff handled the situation there was really unacceptable, they could have done a lot more to help and accommodate the stranded passengers. You had of course a very good idea of trying Turkish instead of the more obvious choices like Singapore or BA, but I think most of the more unexperienced travellers had their problems in a situation like this.

Indeed a good price for a one-way ticket booked right at the counter. And I really like the answer the agent has given you. Very quick-witted, hope he really meant it that way.

What an unexpected trip on TK!! I know you put a lot planning and effort in your attempt to catch flights on new airlines, aircraft types, so walking unexpectedly into this TK flight must have really come a surprise to you, and of course to us your readers!!

Looks like you still did not recover the complete price for the cost your paid on Turkish. But at least you still have an upcoming flight on QF from London to Singapore. But it looks like new cracks around the wings has caused their jets to go back for checks.

Thanks for the trip report seems like things worked out ok in the end, but I guess we can all do without the stress of a cancelled flight especially at the start of the trip.

Qantas did pay out a lot of expenses due to the cancelled flights, you know when things are bad when a Qantas ground staffer rings you to ask for an update.

My brother and his girlfriend were stuck in Sydney for 24 hours and I managed to find them a flight on Virgin the next day and Qantas even paid out the accommodation, the flights on Virgin Australia and the taxi fares. My brother said he wanted some good accommodation, Qantas had said they would pay out $250 a night and I found them something really nice for $400 a night which Qantas paid out in about 3 weeks.

Fast thinking by you does show that there are options available you just need to think fast and act.

Hi PH,

better late then never, finally I got the time to read this wonderful report. Despite the circumstances during this trip, you kept busy with picturing every moment and well described. TK is definitely a great airline, I love the meals too and the seats are comfortable. Also the narrowbodies are great to fly with.
Just I would've loved the 77W more, personally.

No words to QF, definitely very bad how they treat passengers and these people should take another airline next time and not even think anymore about spending money to QF. Industrial actions are part of life, but the airline management did not take care for the most important thing, the customer.

Good choice to spend some time in the Millennium lounge during your transfer. I've been there also before, when flying LX-J, a pleasant area and some nice simple food as well.

Sorry to hear about the luggage, it's controlled by World Wide Tracer, the baggage system. Usually gate agents cannot see in this system since it needs some additional login/training afaik. Ground handling companies and airlines usually have some dedicated staff around to take care about these matters.

Firstly great TR PH. Its a shame you had a bad experience on Qantas. No staff at Qantas (union or not) wanted this and it was purely the actions of the CEO and his ego.

As time has shown the situation has done almost irrepairable damage to Qantas brand. There were many ways to get the issue sorted. Show me ONE poll (that is not by some corporate anti-union publication) that shows the general public and indeed the flying public supports his actions! The ratios in most polls show upwards of 75% of people think his move was damaging and/or the wrong move. AJ idea for the long term survival of Qantas is to reduce it to only flying to LAX and LHR via SIN. No more HKG-LHR, no more BKK-LHR, no more SFO, possibly no more FRA soon either. In the mean time there has been no further progress on his REDQ/AsiaQ/Whatever airline with its lieflat seats on an A320.

Its a shame about your luggage. It baffles me that a handling agent on the other side of the world could find out where your luggage was and yet the airline you flew with didn't have a clue. Very disappointing.

On the plus side - the flights looked pretty decent!

Sorry it's taken me so long to getting around to post a comment.

I really enjoyed your report when it was first published and was eagerly awaiting to see how you ended up getting to SIN.

It was a real shame that you got caught up in the mess that weekend - I remember watching it on the news here in London and could hardly believe it. Really sorry that you ended up in SIN without your luggage too. There's nothing worse than your bag not turning up either.

Not that I am a huge fan of Qantas, but I doubt that other airlines would have handled the situation much differently. It would have helped however having someone on hand at T3 to assist passengers.

I was in ATL a few years years ago and was at the gate waiting for my flight. The departure time slipped twice and eventually the flight was cancelled. When the cancellation notice went up, there was not a single Delta representative at the gate to assist passengers or even tell them how they should go about getting rebooked. I had to ask another passenger. It was very poor indeed.

Getting back to your report - the food looks very tasty on TK - they really seem to be distinguishing themselves from their competitors especially in Y. Wow. Yummy.

Nice that you got the A340 out of LHR as well.

Some great shots from you and Satchmo and I really look forward to the next sector(s).

Alright, here's the answer: TK refers to A330-203s - but the two ex-QR frames (with different seating layouts) are -202 models. Yes, I know, it's not a big deal.

My flights on Turkish Airlines were in February last year though.

My dear Zkpilot, no I am not his boyfriend or his cheerleader, but over here in the west the polls did show 75% support FOR AJ's stance. In other forum threads what became apparent was that the support for either side of the argument followed political leaning.

I have checked the Perth Now site, but they do not seem to keep poll info for very long, and it is now no longer visible.

I also checked my own postings on this site to find the link, but my user name is a more common word than I thought and there are nearly 3000 posts to wade through to find the one where I mentioned about the WA poll.

Anyway, this is not the thread to argue the point, but it is to congratulate the OP for his quick thinking that allowed him not to be inconvenienced as much as others.

Sorry for the very late reply. I must have missed your report when you posted it! Sorry for that! Having said that, thanks for the great story on the first part of your Asian adventures. Nice pictures and a interesting read. Pity about all the problems with QF. They really had it tough the latest time with strikes, incidents etc. Sorry to read that they couldn´t assist you in a better way! Thankfully you was refundable and get back your baggage in the end, even it took some time.

TK on the other hand looks to be good despite the less interested agents in IST. Nice that they send a wide body to LHR. Didn´t know that!

Now I will continue with the next part, thanks again for the story PH

Yes, the compensation package was nice. I have already used my voucher for another LHR-SIN flight in May. Let's see if I will get on the QF A380 this time.
