Topic: Thai Airways Boeing 777-300ER: BKK-NRT-BKK Username: win1290 Posted 2012-04-10 04:23:25 and read 18030 times.Hello and welcome to my trip report featuring a flight I took with Thai Airways from Bangkok to Tokyo Narita Airport and return early April 2012 on a family trip. I hope you enjoy reading.
Date: 5 April 2012
Airline: Thai Airways International
Flight: TG676
Route: BKK-NRT
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Registration: HS-TKH
Class: Economy
After dropping off my parents and sibling at the terminal, I went off to park the car. When I rejoined them, they were just been called to the check-in counter as there was a bit of a queue in the early hour at the airport. The check-in was smooth.

After receiving all our boarding passes to Tokyo, we proceeded directly to passport check and security screening. It did not take longer than 10 minutes to complete. Then we headed to Royal Silk lounge on the concourse C which was the closest to our boarding gate C7.

There are two TG lounges in concourse C, the West lounge is still closed at 6am, so off we went to use the one on the opposite side.

At the time, the lounge was very busy and it wasn’t possible for 4 of us to get seats together. We asked TG ladies at the front desksif we could use the private room, she kindly came and unlocked one of the two private rooms and let us in.

After breakfast

Heading off from the lounge to the boarding gate. At this time, the lounge was less busy.

After a short wait, at around 7:25, a standard boarding call was made firstly inviting passengers travelling with children then premium passengers and frequent fliers. Then passengers in economy class were boarded by seat row number and TG ground staff were very strict on this.

Entering the aircraft, lie-flat herringbone business class seats

Settled in my 34K

Not bad space.

Safety card

In-flight entertainment was available to use even when on the ground. The controllers

When the aircraft door was closed, the captain made a welcome announcement and also saying that there was an aircraft, and I quote, stuck behind our airplane so there would be a slight delay and he apologised for the inconvenient. However, the flight time would be shorter than planned, 5 hours and 10 minutes, so despite the delay departure, we would reach Tokyo 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Then the crew came to welcome us as TG ROP gold members and offered us to choose our meal first, 2 options were omelette or shrimps congee. I went for the omelette. At 7:50am, the aircraft was pushed back

At exactly 8am, the aircraft took off 25 minutes behind schedule

After the seatbelt sign was turned off, the inflight manager made a welcome announcement. All announcements were made in Thai, English and Japanese. There was a Japanese crew onboard as well and she did not were the traditional Thai dress

Then drinks were served and followed by breakfast

Cabin view

For the next few hours I watched a film, throughout this time, drinks were offered regularly then 1 hour and 15 minutes before landing a light snack were served.

Before landing, a short video on immigration procedure (finger print scanning and taking picture of inbound pax) were shown.

Then shortly before landing, the pilot announced that there would be a lot of crosswind on landing so we were told to expect a bumpy landing, and it was indeed a bumpy landing.

Landed at 15:15 local time, ahead of the 15:45 arriving schedule

A long taxi to parking

Disembarking the airplane

First Class

It was a long walk to passport check, and when we got there, there was a long line of queue, but fortunately, as we were walking to join the queue, we were told to follow an immigration officer who led us for a short distance walk to another much shorter queue and it didn’t take longer than 10 minutes for us to clear
Then we were off to collect our baggage which were already on the belt

Arrival hall was quite busy

Arriving flight information

Then we bought a airport-hotel transfer which took us directly to our hotel on a 90 minute bus trip

Hotel room and the view from the room

Here are some pictures taken during the trip

Some pictures of the food

This is the detail of the returning flight
Date: 8 April 2012
Airline: Thai Airways International
Flight: TG677
Route: NRT-BKK
Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
Registration: HS-TKG
Class: Economy
We travelled to the airport direct from our hotel using the bus. Arrived at the airport very early (too early) at around 13:40 for a 16:55 flight to Bangkok
Narita Airport Terminal 1 South

At the time, TG counters were closed but we were told that it would be opened at 14:25, so we went to the airport mall for lunch

When we returned to check-in counters, there were a few people already waiting in the line, and it didn’t take long to wait. We were told that the flight was completely full. After having our boarding passes, we went directly to security screening and passport check, all took less than 10 minutes
Our boarding gate was 46, which was quite a long walk, but we were told by check-in lady that we could use the ANA lounge which was located very close to the gate.

After buying a few things at the duty free shops, we made our way to ANA lounge

Passing United lounge

Arriving at ANA Business class lounge, we were greeted by friendly lounge staff

Very nice snack and refreshments

There is also a noodle bar, which I ordered o udon

Seating area in the lounge

We left the lounge to the boarding gate at 16:20 to be at the gate just in time for the 16:25 planned boarding time

Then before boarding started, we were told to line up, one priority line and one economy line.

When the crew saw me taking pictures, she jokingly said ‘beautiful seats, aren’t they, unfortunately they are not ours, the plane is leased from another airline’ I can’t wait to see the interior of 777-300ER TG will get delivered soon.
Seated in 33D

Once the boarding was completed and the aircraft door closed, the captain made a welcome announcement, saying the flight time would be 6 hour and 30 minutes. Before took off, once again crew came to ask all *G of our meal preference and the two options were pork panang curry with rice (Thai dish) or chicken with rice (Japanese dish). I went for the curry. The plane took off around 20 minutes behind schedule.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get a window seat. I am sorry for no take off and landing pictures. A few moments after took off, the captain came on PA and said that on the right side of the airplane, we could see mt. Fuji very clear, sadly being on the left-ish side, I couldn’t see anything

Soon after seat belt signs were switched off, drinks and snack were offered

Then followed by a meal

After meal service, cabin light was turned off as some people (me included) had a nap. 1 hours 15 minutes before landing, the mood lighting was turned on, first it was dark blue, then it turned dark blue with purple, then purple with orange then blue with orange

Then hot towels were given out and an option of vanilla or green tea ice creams was offered. I went for Vanilla ice cream

Then the crew came to prepare cabin for landing. Landing was at around 21:45 which was 20 minutes behind schedule
Walking to immigration

Passport check was swift and there were only a few people in front of us. Then we waited for our bags for around 10 minutes

Overall, it was another nice flying experience with Thai Airways on both flights. We were very happy to get to use the private room at BKK lounge (it was our first time using it) and also very happy with ANA lounge at Narita, very nice refreshments. Cabin crew service was once again very friendly and professional. While the IFE was great, I must admit that the cabin doesn’t feel very fresh as there were a few broken bits and odd markings on the seats. Nonetheless, we were happy with our trip with TG.
Thanks for reading, as ever all comments and feedback are very much appreciated.

HI flightsimboy! I hope you have a nice flight with TG!
Indeed. In the next year or so, all the leased planes will be returned to Jet Airways and TG will receive brand new 777-300ER

We had the pleasure of flying TG's leased 777-300ERs on the BKK-NRT-BKK sectors last october, in the wonderful 1st class suites and herringbone J seats. The best hardware we had flown, surpassed only by EK and their upper deck A380!
Speaking to the wonderful crew on the return flight, 1 of them mentioned that TG's own brand new 300ERs will only be in a 2 class configuration, apparently with the new J seats found on their soon to be delivered A380 this year. It would be a shame if they do eventually return the leased birds, as I think they are defo the best hard product in TG's varied fleet. |

Beautiful flights from TG. I thought the seats looked incredibly comfortable and elegant in economy. Really great.
Food also looked nice, although sometimes the tray seems a bit bare. Overall, a great show. Also impressive to see such good loads, and such communication from the flightdeck throughout.

Japan is definitely the destionation for Thai's school breaks. BKK-Japan route is one of the strongest TG route!
I was at HND international terminal last month. Same same but different food offering for the ANA lounge
We were invited to use the First class section in the early morning due to the cleaning being conducted over the Business class part. The faux library/living room atmosphere was nice but too bright for my eyes after the red-eyed flight
Thanks again.

What hotel did you stay at in Tokyo?
TG's 777-300ER's area leased from Jet Airways. They are my favorite aircraft in TG's fleet, because they have the latest inflight entertainment. TG also uses them BKK-CDG-BKK.
TG normally does not allow cockpit visits, but I asked the flight attendant and she asked the captain so I was able to get a cockpit visit after we landed.
I live in Bangkok and I am at Suvarnabhumi now getting ready to fly to MNL.

Hi Luke! Thanks for the comment! I think the seats look great and comfortable, but sadly my father (who has a sensitive back) didn't agree. I think the food tasted very good especially the curry on the inbound flight. TG does seem to be doing particularly well on routes to Japan, in fact, we were waitlisted on the inbound flight for a few weeks until we got a confirmed reservation.

Thanks net-hkt! I agree that Bangkok-Japan route is a very successful route for TG and especially in this Songkran season, it required an effort for all of us to get a confirmed reservation despite booking a month in advance. Its good that you got invited in F lounge and the lounge sounds good too, at Narita, the Business and First class lounges were located on the different floor.

Thanks triple7man! We stayed at ANA Intercontinental in Tokyo. TG leased 2 additional 777-300ER from Jet late last year to operate them on the 744 route while the 744s are undergoing retrofitting. I agree, that it IFE was very nice and so was the lie flat J seats and the suite in F. Very nice you got to visit the cockpit . Although, it may be a little late to say, but Have a nice flight!

Yes, the 300ERs does look great in TG colours, long may they carry on flying them.
Who am I kidding, I love the 300ERs, they look good in any colour scheme!
Jokes aside, we loved the herringbone J seats, was nowhere near as cramped as some described, I understand it is a wider design than the CX/ virgin variety. Proper flat bed, loads of elbow room and aisle access for all. heck I could even lay on my front and look out of the window, with the GE90 spinning away in all its glory, who needs IFE! Was quite a comedown when we had to fly on the older J seats back to LHR, was our 1st time on the 747-400's upper deck, and as excited as I was, it just wasnt as good as the herringbones.

Sadly, I don't know how these J seats are compared with the others of CX or Virgin, never been on any of these seats before. But despite the angle flat J seats, I do like the 747-400 upper deck cozy 2-2 cabin.

Thanks Gabriel! TG is certainly doing very well on BKK-Japan route. TG offers 2 standard choices in Y, however in some cases (mostly on long haul flights), the crew will offer an additional of 1 or 2 options which would be the food they have left from Business class.

Hello abrelosojos! Thanks for the comment! From the end of last year, I notice TG was stepping up effort to recognise their frequent flyers. Last year when I was on BKK-LHR in Y, I noticed that all *G travelling in Y got given a fast track card to use on arrival immigration!

Just up to quite recent few years I noticed an improvement on TG's lounge at BKK. I haven't been to an airport lounge in the US (I have only been to the US only once) but I have been to a few in Europe, and overall I don't think they are much worse. But I do think that the staff at TG lounge were very friendly and as you said accommodating Quoting dc9northwest (Reply 18): Interesting aircraft, as well, with a slightly different history, I gather |
Indeed, TG leased it from Jet Airways of India.

Hi Sultanils. Thanks a lot! The seats look quite elegant indeed. The seat pitch of 32 inch is marginally less than TG's usual 34 inch though. But for me, the space was good as I am not very tall at all. Quoting sultanils (Reply 19): Nice of the crew to acknowledge your status and presence. |
Its even more nice when our parents, who don't have *G, also get the same recognition.
Quoting sultanils (Reply 19): Another airport with a mall Wasn’t there a viewing platform? |
Don't think there was a good viewing area at check-in area. But after security and passport check there were few good spots.
TG leased this aircraft from Jet Airways. Its not long now (I think in the next year or so) that the lease contract will end and TG will get its very own 777-300ER.

Indeed. I was also surprised when the pilot made some Japanese announcements after Thai and English.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): Is there any spotting terrace? You could have spent some time there. |
Unfortunately, I didn't see any spotting area prior to security and passport check.
Love the noodle bar as well.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): What did you say? Something like ‘So I assume your seats are even more beautiful’? |
hehe, I said something like, I couldn't wait until I see the brand new TG seats, I hope they are more beautiful Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): What a pity. Did anyone of your group get assigned a window seat? If so, you could have asked the person to take a photo of Mt. Fuji for you.
|
Unfortunately no, there were 4 of us travelling and we got 3 middle seats and 1 aisle seat on the side. we were waitlisted on the return flight and only got a confirmed travel just over a week before our travel date, and at the time, the window seats were booked up.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 20): Green tea ice cream? Exotic! I would have opted for that one. |
Hehe, I also like Green tea, I like all ice cream but naturally I just went for the more sweet option
Thanks for reading.

Nice to see the 77W operating the NRT route, a nice change from the worn down 744s. Seems like many airlines who leased the 9W 77W's seem very happy with them, even so that they ordered them. Any idea when TG will receive theirs?
The service on Thai looked fantastic as usual, really like the way the crew greets every *G passenger and asks for meal preference. This would never ever in the history of mankind have happened on SAS
Had no idea such services were even offered, but it does provide a good personal touch when flying in Economy. Is this the norm on all asian airlines?
Pictures from Tokyo looked faboulus, can't wait to go there myself in September. Sadly though I'll be flying Skyteam

It was very nice to go on 77W. Now TG operates 3 daily flights from Bangkok to Tokyo Narita, using 77W, A330-300 and Boeing 747-400. TG seems very happy with the aircraft indeed, it has 14 on order. The first 2 will arrive this year, and it will be using on BKK-NRT from Mid-August.

Haha, I agree, it was very good. However, it seems to me that TG is still quite inconsistent on that respect. Well, this *G greeting didn't happen on my most recent flight BKK-LHR with them. Also, last year when I travelled BKK-LHR in Y, all *G also got given a fast track invitation to use at Heathrow arrival, again, didn't happen on the flight last week .
Well, who knows, may be it will happen on SAS
I am not sure on that, I usually travel with TG

Thanks! really enjoyed my time in Tokyo. Hope you have a nice trip

I enjoy the mood lights!
It reminds me of my trip report: Magical Lights Of The 777: LY 777 TLV-CDG In C (by LY777 Aug 23 2010 in Trip Reports)?threadid=174515&searchid=190755&s=MAGICAL#ID190755 |

Thanks LY777,
Me as well, it gives a very nice ambience. The mood lighting used on the flight in your report looks very similar indeed.

Back when I was still PPS Club with SQ, I was twice greeted by the purser while flying in Y who on both occasions told me if I needed anything to contact her directly. Not sure if they still do this.
Very nice TR.

Food looks decent and good to see you had first choice due to status, quite impressed with that.
Both of the machines you flew are leased from Jet Airways, would be interesting to see what the new build TG 77W's are like when they arrive.
The ANA lounge @ NRT is great, wonderful views too.
Cheers

Thanks a lot, I am very glad you enjoyed it.
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 30): Food looks decent and good to see you had first choice due to status, quite impressed with that. |
Food was very nice and authentically Thai (on the inbound). It was very good that my parents who didn't have the status also got offered to choose the meal first. While this idea is very good, TG hasn't been consistent with it. This didn't happen on my most recent flight BKK-LHR.

Indeed. TG will be using its very own 77W on BKK-NRT route from mid-August and would be very nice to see the new interior, which I believe to be the very same to the one offered on TG A380 but without the First Class.
Love the Noddle bar at the lounge, and its also very conveniently located very close to the boarding gate.
Thanks
