Welcome to my latest trip report.

This trip was a bit of a last minute decision. I was due to travel to Athens to see my Family for a few days and decided to ask my Cousin if he would like to take a quick visit to London . As you will know last time it was not a nice experience at British Airways/Swissport Athens and due to a gesture by BA customer relations in Newcastle I was offered enough Executive Club miles for two round trip flights ATH-LHR-ATH. Now I could have used these anywhere or even for just myself to travel somewhere further but I thought it only right that my Cousin should have 50% of the miles as it was him that was affected the last time too.

Not one to say no to a trip my Cousin said he would love to go so I logged onto the BA website and booked the flights with miles and paid just a minimal service fee.

The morning of the flight we got up early and my Cousin drove us to the Airport. My Aunt got up to see us off and wanted us to call her as soon as we checked in . She was a bit anxious due to last time but I assured her everything was fine and we had been told to contact the British Airways desk prior to check in .

DATE: 11/MAR/2012
AIRLINE: BRITISH AIRWAYS
FLIGHT: BA 631
ROUTE: ATHENS - LONDON HEATHROW
CLASS: EURO TRAVELLER ( UPGRADED TO CLUB EUROPE )
SEAT: 4D / 4F
AIRCRAFT: AIRBUS A320
REG: G - ????

As we were advised my Cousin and I approached the ticket desk. Right away I recognised the staff member and she knew me

I said '' Good morning , I take it you remember me ? ''

She said '' Yes '' and gave me a nervous smile. I then advised her that we were told to contact the desk . She asked me to wait a minute and she went into the back office to make a call to check in . The call actually lasted around 4-5 minutes. She then came back and pointed us to the direction of the check in and said her colleagues were waiting to check us in . I can only presume they got a short run down on the incident last time.

My Cousin and I proceeded to the Club Europe check in desk and were greeted by a friendly check in agent and Swissport supervisor. We were asked how many bags we were checking in and I presented our passports. I looked at my Cousin and he looked at me , he looked a bit nervous but I was not worried. The agent took a quick glance at the passport and then issued boarding cards and said '' Mr OA260 you are upgraded to Club Europe today and I think you know where the lounge is ? '' . I said '' Thank you very much and I do indeed know where the lounge is''.

My Cousin and I then proceeded to the BA lounge along the way calling my Aunt to let her know all was well.

We entered the lounge and right away were recognised . The lovely Lady who was very friendly to us last time was there and said '' Hey how are you ? No problems this time I hope ? ''. We both smiled and said no thank god. She told us to sit and relax and enjoy the lounge.

Soon it was time to head to the gate so we said goodbye to the lounge staff and made our way via Fast Lane to the gate.

Time to visit the bathroom.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-62.jpg

After that we were both tired so we took a sleep .

About 40 minutes prior to landing drinks were offered again so I went for sparkling water and lemon.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-65.jpg

Soon it was time to land into LHR :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-66.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-67.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-68.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-69.jpg

Nice to see but alot of aircraft to brand :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-70.jpg

We pulled up on stand but no one was at the air bridge to let us off. The pilot came over the PA and appologised but it took nearly 10 minutes to get off after parking at the gate . It was a bit of a pain but we were in no rush so didnt care but some passengers were complaining as they had connections. After a while the door opened and we disembarked thanking the crew for a lovely flight.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-72.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-73.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-74.jpg

Bags were first off and very quick. Reminds me of the BA Olympic advert  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-75.jpg

Hmm the new Greeks ?   lol...

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-76.jpg

We made our way to the underground to get the tube to T123 where we would change to the X26 to Worcester Park. We then got a train to Ewell to where my Mum lives.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-77.jpg

So as usual we all went to Jimmys Spices :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-78.jpg

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-79.jpg

And then we shopped :

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-80.jpg

So this was a very short trip and after some nice times with my Mum we were back to Heathrow .

Right by the exit row there was a FA who was very chatty . She was asking my Cousin about life in Athens these days and said she wanted to go on holidays in the Summer to Greece. We chatted alot about all different things and she mentioned that the delay was due to earlier fog and not the usual reason which was the B767 going technical. I smiled and said that I had heard there had been some issues. Only a short time previously two flights were cancelled from ATH-LHR and BA sent a B744 down to ATH to collect the passengers. Shame it wasnt this time   The flight before us that morning to ATH had been cancelled so this flight was 100% full.

After take off the crew commenced their duties . The majority were ''business friendly'' to borrow Markus's signature phrase  http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-155.jpg

After a while we both fell asleep for the remainder of the flight waking up when we began our decent into ATH .

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-162.jpg

We pulled up on stand and disembarked the aircraft thanking the crew for a plesant flight.

http://i955.photobucket.com/albums/ae40/PhilipOA260/BAATHLHR/file-163.jpg

We collected our bags and made our way home to un pack the shopping

So thats the end of my report. I hope you all enjoyed. A nice experience on BA . Since BMI has been taken over I am now being matched to BA Gold. I guess this means that I will use them more especially if they keep the BHD-LHR route on their own metal. I still will keep the majority of my travels on Star Alliance though as I still prefer their members products and routes. BA did the job though and the upgrade was a nice token by them.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate all your comments

Hey thanks alot yes I always prefer main meals on the flights as breakfast is nice but not as substantial. Still both were nice and the outward ATH-LHR had the nicest Greek yoghurt I have tasted in a long time.

Hi im glad you enjoyed. I seen that earlier and I am going to sign up maybe in four weeks. No point at the moment as I get into BA F Class lounges with my BMI card which is valid til June so may as well get the longest stretch out of it .   Will be nice to sample some extra special Champs in T5 though

Hey, Phil - Another good report on BA.

I'm impressed by the really good looking Y meal on the LHR-ATH; nice job, BA! I also really like the marketing campaign for "To Fly To Serve"; how stylish!

Hola Philip!

Nice to see a great BA report, especially after the nightmare of the last one; very nice of you to invite your cousin along, fair after all the hassle he went through, nice chap!

Really BA seems a great airline, especially on land with all those great offerings at the lounges. Good you caught that B767, although I have much preferred the B747. Hope next time!

ATH seems to have learnt their lesson and the upgrade was the minimum they could do, I imagine they were shaking the moment they saw you approaching the check in desk.

Great pictures, time to go for breakfast, made me hungry

Salut!

Roger

Hi Phil,

thanks for another great report with a lot of interesting pictures. Glad to read that this time everything went smoothly, the upgrade at least a small compensation for the problems you had the last time. Seems like you a had good experience on BA, the food definitely looks great. Also nice to get the 767 on an European flight.

Indeed . Yes getting a widebody to ATH these days is rare. Weird to think in the old days it was A300/B747 with OA and BA used Tri Stars   At least this B767 is still running . Fingers crossed for a B787 in future

hey thanks for the report!

just curious. As someone who travels a lot within the US and with the EU I still don't FULLY get the idea of European business class having the Y seat with just a blocked middle seat... now I can understand the logistics of a 737 / 757 / A319/20 etc. for their own finances (not a fan in regards to my comfort) but BA has that 767 for shorter haul flights that you flew on that has a middle seat blocked, but the configuration can't be moved around as it goes up to a bulk head and is a completely different seat to what is offered in Y (whereas on the other planes its the same seat so they can just move the curtain)
It also seems that the middle seat would just be added weight... Either I'm missing something or I don't get it. haha, anyone have an answer?

Thanks again,
~Cheers-

Hey Philip,

Another one up to the usual high standard. Thanks! Glad to see that this BA experience was much better than the last. The upgrade was a lovely gesture but the food looks a little poor. Shame they didn't plate up the breakfast properly rather than offering it in a plastic tray inserted into china. Hopefully the presentation will improve with the acquisition of BD!

Looking forward to the next one.

Hi Phil,

A few quick comments. Firstly, a really excellent trip report. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it is interesting what BA still offer on longer intra-Europe flights. I am happy that you will be flying with them more in the future, as you can keep us updated in a neutral manner about the progress and standards of BA and whether they hold up.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):
Bags were first off and very quick. Reminds me of the BA Olympic advert

I took that bus only 5 days, it is a joy to get a London bus and not have to stop every 15meters! I took it the whole way and people watched (creep)!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 12):
After some shopping we then made our way to the lounge :

Goodness, it is like an art gallery just getting to the BA lounge. But all looking good throughout.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 8):

I gotta say, the meal looks delicious. Were they prawns? I dread 'pasta' but this one looked better than average.

Good haul with the 767 too.

Thanks

Coincidentally I was in Terminal 5 at the same time as you on March 12th! I had a very long layover that lasted the late morning and early afternoon. I didn't see myself in any of the pictures though or recall someone snapping away...nevermind!

Well IIRC and Im not BA seating expert but I thought the seats can be narrowed to make 3-3 and then Club Europe config they are adjusted to make it wider so its changable according to demand . I could be wrong though.

In fairness it was plenty for me and tasty . Nice hot pastries etc... You can only do so much with breakfast and they did it well although the bacon wasnt proper bacon but I think thats more to do with being prepared in ATH. Yeah who knows but BD will just morph into BA catering but thats not a bad thing IMHO

Airlines these days are VERY inconsistent, you can never tell. Last week my brother flew SWISS to SKG from MAD to visit some family, and he was awfully disappointed! Yet it seems you had quite a possitive experience this time! I love that the meals are labled, I like to know what I eat, and the picture on top of the lid certainly enhances the presentation (although I must say that in food marketing, creating expectations that will later be let down is quite punished by the consumer).
As always, great reading a report by you again.

Hi Phil,

It's good to see your report of how you chose to use the miles offered following your previous experience. Sharing them with your cousin who suffered most from the unpleasantness last time was kind of you. It is pleasing to see that things went smoothly this time.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Mr OA260 you are upgraded to Club Europe today and I think you know where the lounge is ?

So on top of the miles to pay for the flights you also received an upgrade on the outbound - they were really trying to make amends. Well done.

Shame about the delay on the return journey but, as you commented, extra time to enjoy the lounge. It seems to have plenty of space, is light and airy and the catering looks appealing.

The cabin crew appear to be engaging with passengers in a friendly and chatty manner. That's good to see and helps to make for a pleasant flight.

Glad that you had a pleasant trip and time with your Mum.
Thanks for sharing,

Hi Philip,

Another nice set of pics of another nice ATH run. It’s sure a good thing BA did it right this time. And bonus points for getting an upgrade, rightfully so after your last experience. I think everytime you come by now, the staff will remember you
Seeing the cabin pics of that 767, I can’t help but feeling that they are in desperate need of a makeover.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Now I could have used these anywhere or even for just myself to travel somewhere further but I thought it only right that my Cousin should have 50% of the miles as it was him that was affected the last time too.

Hi Phil,

Good to hear your treatment was vastly different this time and you even got an op up, congrats on that! A very nice way to make sure you cousin won't hold any grudges against the ATH BA station in the future (I hope). And very generous of you, once again to spend your hard earned compensation miles to take her again to Old Blighty. But I guess you are right, morally half of those miles belong to him anyway!

Very nice to see BA still retaining hot meals for the long continental sectors, that meatball pasta thingy looks quite okay.

Could you just please take your cousin to a someplace new the next time - your trips are getting very predictable (which of course is part of the charm in reading about them!). At least you have managed to get me to try out Jimmy's Spices as soon as one of those crosses paths with mine!

If Swissport handles LX's flights out of MAD, then it is with them who my brother had problems with. It is clear for me that some people in service possitions tend to LOVE making displays of authority, particularly if they can make apparent that they are totally empowered to slam a door at your face and deny you a right. Some people seem to have an awful lot of sadomasochistic fantasies repressed.

All in all, I find that BA has quite a solid product in both of your reports!

Yeah I think they are mostly in the North of England outside the London one.

Dear Philip,

The first thing occurred to me when I saw the title was, ‘OMG! Did Anthony get another bad treatment?’

Luckily, it was not the case! Everything went smoothly and at the end, he got upgraded along with you. Don’t you think it’s also a reward to your own good deed for sharing your Executive Club miles with Anthony?

Anyway, your pre-flight experience was immensely different in a positive way to the previous one!

Now, let’s go to the flight itself!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 1):
Nice brochure of the new interiors :

Could you keep it with you?

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):
Menus were handed out by the crew :

Nice touch! Look even in Greek as well!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 2):
And a nice hot breakfast

BA still stands out with the English breakfast.

And onto your visit to your Mom. Such a good son you are!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):
Jimmys Spices :

I keep it in mind in case we are going to London sometime.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 3):
And then we shopped :

A mother-son day out like I did last month.

As usual, time flies when you’re having fun.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 4):
We didnt mind , more time in the lounge

Blessing in disguise.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):
thats the catering in the lounges :

Just look at the pastry collection! Hmm, I just can smell the fresh bakery aroma.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):
I love this ice cream too

Green & Black’s in London, Chocolate Lounge in Dublin.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):
She was asking my Cousin about life in Athens these days and said she wanted to go on holidays in the Summer to Greece

I assume I can consult Anthony as well if I ever consider to go on holiday to Athens?

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):
Only a short time previously two flights were cancelled from ATH-LHR and BA sent a B744 down to ATH to collect the passengers. Shame it wasnt this time

Probably your next time will be when BA already has her A380’s and deploy one to ATH to collect passengers.

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):
The meal was nice and I love the way they tell your the fat and calories .

Kudos to BA for serving hot meal. Another positive point! A nice gesture indeed to share you nutritious information.
But to be honest, such information does not say much to me.

I am mostly glad to know that about the great overall experience, especially of Anthony. Thank you for sharing it with us and I really like the split up. It makes things easier to comment.

Have a nice weekend and pass on my regards to your mom and Anthony,
Suryo

Yes indeed. I must say it was good once we checked in and we in the lounge . Its always at the back of your mind after that kind of experience in the past. Still he is more relaxed now.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 37):
Could you keep it with you?

Yes there were lots of them but I didnt pick one up. Everything is on the internet these days and Im a minimalist type of guy so dont need anything more to recycle at home   I only take things that are really special these days or collectors items.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 37):
As usual, time flies when you’re having fun.

Indeed it did go really fast but still it was a nice time .

Quoting akhmad (Reply 37):

Haha yes you can or you can cut out the middle Man and just ask me
Quoting akhmad (Reply 37):

You too Suryo and I will indeed. Have a good one yourself .

Hey Philip, great report!

I must say that I'm very impressed with BA's service recovery strategies. Refunding you a very generous amount, hence adding that upgrade as an extra bonus, well done BA! And I suppose with your extra two years of Gold + Silver status in the Executive Club programme you'll for sure fly them some more

Must say that on your 3,5hr flight the service in club looked fine, although the meal served in Euro Traveler did not look bad at all, heck I think I would much rather opt for Y on that route rather than to spend some extra money/miles on Club. But at least nice to score a free upgrade  Did they serve Bailey's in Y?

Indeed will be worth a few runs somewhere   Especially if they keep the BHD and DUB routes.

Not sure I didnt ask . Might find out next time .

Nice report, good to see you had a better experience with BA then last time.
Always nice to get an upgrade. BA lounge looks pretty nice with nice food offerings. The meal in Y class on the way back looks pretty good too!

Hi Phillip, Thanks for the superb and well-documented experience on BA. Last weekend, I hoped to create as generous an amount of photos on my NAP to LGW r/t trip, but I negelected to bring the camera card   I'll be flying the same route at the end of the month, so I'll be certain to remember it this time!

Quoting OA260 (Reply 5):

I fly almost exclusively on Star as well, as LH is far preferable to AZ. While the service on LH is consistently pleasant, I've found BA to be better and thus have been curious about oneWorld. I love the old 737 seats on BA as opposed to LH's thin new generation seats. They're hard and not very comfortable. Again, LH's crews are wonderful, but I genuinely feel that BA has done a very good job of imparting their 'To Fly to Serve' campaign with their staffs. Especially in the States, I feel that the Star Alliance could benefit from that slogan; as a lowly Star Gold flyer, the service standard is non-existant.

Hello Philip!

Nice report as usual!
Good to read that you had a nice couple of flights on BA, and no issue this time. Also very nice to get that upgrade.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
One thing you cant fault BA on and thats the catering in the lounges :

Indeed. I haven't been to many lounges but the BA lounges at T5 is probably the best lounges I have ever been to.

Hi Philip,

Nice read and pictures as usual, apologies for the late read, just struggling to find the time to keep up these days!

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
due to a gesture by BA customer relations in Newcastle I was offered enough Executive Club miles for two round trip flights ATH-LHR-ATH. Now I could have used these anywhere or even for just myself to travel somewhere further but I thought it only right that my Cousin should have 50% of the miles as it was him that was affected the last time too.

- That was a nice touch by you, well done, good deed for the day
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
I know its early but I decided to take a Baileys

- Always 12:00 somewhere
Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
One thing you cant fault BA on and thats the catering in the lounges

- No, the T3 & T5 lounges are well catered.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
The meal was nice and I love the way they tell your the fat and calories

- The catering on the longer haul short haul flights is a step up for sure, nice!

Cheers

Mark

Hi Philip,

So good to hear that your BA flights were a success this time. What a difference in the way you were treated. I bet the staff were on the best behaviour that day.

Nice that you got upgraded to Club, that breakfast looks very tasty. Plus getting the 767 on the return leg, that's what I call a successful trip.

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
Soon it was time to land into LHR :

Always such a bittersweet sight seeing Concorde.

Lots of big green bags there!

What a spread

Quoting OA260 (Thread starter):
We collected our bags and made our way home to un pack the shopping

Which is almost as good as the flying

Happy flying
