Hello all,

Its been a longest time since I posted my last trip review on Kenya Airways vs Ethiopian Airlines on their 5th freedom flight between Bangkok and Hong Kong.

Just a few days back, I was honoured to have been part of an Asian media familiarization trip to Croatia with Qatar Airways for their inaugural flight to Zagreb.

As my expertise falls on making flight video reviews, I'd like to share with the a.net community my personal experience of this journey onboard this inaugural flight, including the airport ceremony in Zagreb, scenes of Zagreb and Croatia and of course, my experience onboard Qatar Airways' A320 product:

Part 1: Doha to Budapest
Part 2: Budapest to Zagreb + Airport ceremony + scenes of Zagreb and Croatia

Just some facts on this inaugural flight. Qatar Airways launched Zagreb as its 30th European destination on May 9, 2012, operating via Budapest, Hungary. Budapest itself was launched on 17 January 2011 as the airline's 23th European destination.

The flight numbers are QR947 (DOH-BUD-ZAG) /QR948 (ZAG-BUD-DOH). It may be of interest to some of you that there are 5th freedom rights between BUD-ZAG-BUD.

The A320-232 aircraft operating for the flight is registration: A7-AHT, just delivered three weeks prior and has touch-screen PTV on every seat.

Actual flight time (DOH-BUD): 5h 1min (5h 35min scheduled)
Actual flight time (BUD-ZAG): 39mins (55mins scheduled)

I certainly hope you'll enjoy. Hvala. Thank you (in Croatian).

Hi RvXKaz,

excellent video reports about these two nice flights! The new interior on A7-AHT looks great. I recently flew on an older A320 and an older A321 without PTVs. Good to see you were able to move to Business Class on the second flight!

I was very excited to read this as I 'need' an interesting way to Budapest in September. Unfortunately the price is prohibitive, if Malev could barely fill an EMB120 I don't know how Qatar plan on filling an A320!

Great report Gavin - looks like you had a great trip on QR, and a lovely time in Croatia - were some of the photos from Pula and Rovinj? Was it the Croatian Toruist Board and QR that paid for/arragned the trip? The service in Economy looked very good. I'm very surprised at the ambitous catering plans for the BUD-ZAG flight. It's nice that they offer somthing, but I think they've tried too hard. In January I flew BJM-KGL with South African in C which was 27 minutes long. I was just offered a choice of drink and a chocolate bar which I think is more than adeuqate. It must be annoying to be served something very nice but not have time to enjoy it!

How did you manage to score this one?  . It was already oozing with all the Gavin charm as seen in your written/video trip reports or else I would have thought it was just promotional material for Qatar Airways lol. You always have something nice to say about every flight, no matter how bad it could actually be!!

You actually had the big man himself on your flight. Maybe he'll see your video  . I hope Qatar will someday come to Toronto, but they are not too far away in Montreal or New York to try them out.

Hi Gavin,

An incredible video report as usual! You are so lucky to be taking the inaugural flight, and being upgraded to business class too (despite the short flight). Zagreb and Croatia looks like a great place to go! I dislike the A320s, but I must say, I don't mind flying this A320. Very nice of the journalist to be offering you his/her window seat for you to capture the water cannon salute  .

Look forward to more great videos as usual,

I certainly hope prices will go down (for the sake of us aviation enthusiasts!) Qatar Airways did clarify that 'there was an opportunity when Malev ceased operations and they seized it' but it wasn't stated how they would seize this opportunity! Perhaps they will introduce lowered prices between BUD-ZAG once the passenger traffic stabilizes.

A really interesting report - thanks for taking the time to put together and share such an interesting bundle of information on the flight and Croatia itself.

I recognised Plitvice Lakes there - they looked stunning. You were really lucky with the weather for sure!

Which coastal resort were you at?

Bok Gavin !
I've already expressed my deep sadness on FB with my empty table and cold coffee  ... but also a quick recovery heheheh ... but every time I see the video ahhh Gavin in ZAG and SPU and I missed the meeting ...

your video-works are unique so no surprises with this new edition ... clearly missing the main star but ...
Quoting TupolevTu154 (Reply 2):
Unfortunately the price is prohibitive, if Malev could barely fill an EMB120 I don't know how Qatar plan on filling an A320!

possible ... do you have some inside information TupolevTu154 ? ...
MA summer timetable 2012
SPU-BUD 1 _ 3 4 5 6 7 with 737-600,700,800
ZAG-BUD 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 with EM2
1 _ 3 4 5 _ _ with DH4
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 with EM2
but do you really think that MALEV would fly two-three times a day with empty planes ? ... this sounds a bit sarcastically hehehhe ... I have often used Malev from SPU ( a few times from ZAG ) for party weekends in Budapest ... rates were high (generally 200 eur often 280 eur ) and planes are always full ... perhaps my perception but Croatia has a high ticket prices and even so-called low-cost operators take advantage of it ( except FR ) ... and MA too ... plus strong historical ties as well as economic ...oil-gas connection INA - MOL , new fast railway from port of Rijeka to Zagreb and Budapest , OTP bank , tourism ...generated a good potential for MA ...

planned new LNG terminal in Omisalj, island of Krk ,Rijeka is the main reason for opening the QR lines to Doha because Qatar is also interested and strongly lobbied for the investment in LNG terminal ... and several Croatian companies has obtained a "transparent business" in Doha ... free market my arse hehehehe ... ZAG-BUD is not QR priority but it fits in the oil and gas activities ... 198 eur return and 270 eur one way is peanuts for oil-bank-government business ... plus tourism to and from Asia and a few members of croatian diaspora from Australia and QR is ok ...

Asian market are very important for our hoteliers because of the high income ... AY has introduced regular flights to DBV ( and SPU charter for now ) capturing Asian market as well as AF daily for ZAG,SPU,DBV ... plus we have KE and JL charter to ZAG ... and TK is fighting for second ZAG flight and for new DBV flight ... for our small market, quite dynamic .... ahhh me

...Gavin next time .... and thanks for presenting my country ...stipica

Hi Gavin,

great video report about your journey to Croatia, enjoyed watching both parts a lot. Good service here on QR, especially great that they serve a meal on that short hop from BUD to ZAG. And very nice of course to see that there was a nice celebration for the inaugural flight there in ZAG.

Quoting RvXKaz (Reply 12):
I've heard its another beautiful Croatian city.

DBV and region ( Cavtat,Ston with famous oysters,Korcula,Mljet and Peljesac peninsula) is must if you visit Croatia on limited time ... but you have the time because it is the ideal destination for the elderly or family's ... so next time go to IBZ or AMS or IST or ... hehehe but coffee is must ...stipica

Bok, my friend Gavin,

It just feels right to reply on your blockbusters here as well. So here you go:

DOH-BUD

“Where am I?”
That’s exactly the question I was asking myself the last couple of days, “Where are you?”
And look how magic comes to me! A true fairy tale of Qatar’s inaugural flight to Croatia!

Your video has made me pinch myself several times, “Am I dreaming?”

Maybe I am. In that case, I don’t wish to wake up! Whoa! Whoa! Slow down with the pictures, I am not as fast as you!

25F was your seat? Gavin, If you only knew…. What a great legroom and I love the winged headrest.

Ah yes, boarding and disembarking on steps are always so romantic. Too bad, it will change by the end of 2012.

What a nice gesture of QR to offer boiled candies and wipe towels as pre-boarding service in Economy. Something similar to Garuda with orange juice cups.

Ah, the in-flight safety video demo reminds me of my own experience two years ago. The good looking male flight attendant have always been intrigued me.

That’s a long takeoff roll! Most probably due to the good load factor and fuel storage.

Qatar may keep expanding, but I am still waiting her to come to AMS. Still amazing to know that every 15 days a new aircraft is delivered.

OMG, Personal TV with highly responsive touch screen! Impressive to play games without using any control unit separately. Nice to have your menu displayed on it, but I assume paper menus were still distributed as well?

What an extensive breakfast offering. The sausage looked nice and juicy. Oh dear, five flight attendants in Economy.

That certainly made a difference and enabled them to provide more personalized service.

I am very grateful that I can re-experience Qatar again through your eyes. Thanks a lot for sharing this magical journey all the way to Budapest, a city I have never been to. And I can imagine your excitement of the onward flight to Zagreb.

BUD-ZAG

An upgrade to Business Class! Let me say in the first instance that you deserved the upgrade. It would have been nicer if the upgrade had materialized from Qatar’s home base so that I can enjoy the luxurious Premium Terminal through your eyes.

Nevertheless, I just go on experiencing Business Class on the one less hour flight from Budapest to Zagreb. Lemon mint to start with! A nice choice of welcome drink! Wow, menu distribution! Look how nice the cover is!

But 2C? Why did you not get assigned 2A at the first place? The journalist did not seem to do anything with the window view. Luckily he allowed you to take his during landing. He should have done that at the beginning.

The nice patterned tray table, the meal tray set, tantalizing food and fresh drink … they just remind me of my experience two years ago.

Water cannon salute! My oh my, I saw photo shots of the moment earlier, unaware that you were on board. Amazing! By the way, funny to see some guys (photographers?) running on the tarmac while your aircraft was being docked.

You were actually on board together with Qatar’s CEO! That’s cool! Especially when you were among the honor guests to attend the ceremony! A nice gift upon arrival by a sweet girl!

You look nice with business suite, Gavin. Though, I had to get used to it in the first place.

The intricate details of the city scenery of Zagreb, the meeting with the Croatian guys on a terrace (How did you talk them into filming?   ), the local cuisine, the view of Croatian beautiful nature like watching a National Geographic documentary, especially the swimming snake. .. everything just left me speechless.

I am delighted, excited and blessed with your video and yourself as a good friend of mine.

Thank you so much for sharing. I do not know what others think, but you are rightly the ambassador of Croatia to all of us.

Warmest regards,

Suryo

Hi stipica!

Thank you for replying once again!

Quoting stipica (Reply 18):
but of course I noticed it long time ago wandering through the YouTube offering

haha, now I know! Thank you for following me!

Quoting stipica (Reply 18):
clever conclusion hehehehe

LoL, I had to come up with something!
Quoting stipica (Reply 18):
...ZAG has a business flexibility with 3 flights and similar capacity ...and SPU is more tourist market and the flight was focused on Malev network and AA flight to JFK

I see, really good to know and thanks very much for clarifying. Yeah, multiple frequencies with smaller capacity is more business-friendly, now I know!

Quoting stipica (Reply 18):
DBV and region ( Cavtat,Ston with famous oysters,Korcula,Mljet and Peljesac peninsula) is must if you visit Croatia on limited time ... but you have the time because it is the ideal destination for the elderly or family's ... so next time go to IBZ or AMS or IST

Thank you so much for your clarification. Regardless, it was a magical experience in your breath-taking country of natural beauty.

Quoting stipica (Reply 18):
hehehe but coffee is must ...stipica

Yes, sure thing

Hey Suryo!!!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Bok, my friend Gavin

Bok, my friend!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
It just feels right to reply on your blockbusters here as well.

Thanks so much for your reply here. I still haven't figured out a less clumsy way of replying feedback on Facebook! Abit tricky to go between feedback and messages on Facebook. Till I figure it out, I'm most happy to reply to you here!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
A true fairy tale of Qatar’s inaugural flight to Croatia!

I liked how you put it, it certainly was a fairy tale indeed!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Your video has made me pinch myself several times, “Am I dreaming?”

You're not the only one - even after the trip, I was still pinching myself.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
I don’t wish to wake up! Whoa! Whoa! Slow down with the pictures, I am not as fast as you!

haha, just a sneak preview of Croatia!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
f you only knew…. What a great legroom and I love the winged headrest.

Yes, I know! I really liked the longhaul product in a narrowbody aircraft!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
boarding and disembarking on steps are always so romantic. Too bad, it will change by the end of 2012.

Oh yes, the New Doha International Airport right? Yes, the unique experience that all planes are deboarded without aerobridges will be sorely missed!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
What a nice gesture of QR to offer boiled candies and wipe towels as pre-boarding service in Economy. Something similar to Garuda with orange juice cups.

I agree! I kinda like orange juice better but maybe its just me and my obsession with OJ :P

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
The good looking male flight attendant have always been intrigued me.

haha, the dark and handsome face of QR

Nice to know!

Yes, I really enjoyed the PTV! I can't remember the last time I was in the narrowbody aircraft with PTV entertainment system!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Nice to have your menu displayed on it, but I assume paper menus were still distributed as well?

Unfortunately, no. There were no paper menus for that flight!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
What an extensive breakfast offering. The sausage looked nice and juicy.

haha, it was really filling and I enjoyed it thoroughly!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Oh dear, five flight attendants in Economy.

That certainly made a difference and enabled them to provide more personalized service.

Yes, everyone could get their meals served quickly and service wasn't rushed at all.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Thanks a lot for sharing this magical journey all the way to Budapest, a city I have never been to.

Me neither, it does look like a really expansive and intriguing city! I'd love to visit some day.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):

Yes, perhaps some day!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Lemon mint to start with! A nice choice of welcome drink!

haha! I really loved Qatar Airways's signature drink! Its so refreshing and enjoyable!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
But 2C? Why did you not get assigned 2A at the first place?

Oh well, it was a last minute decision for the upgrade so I wasn't fast enough to get a better seat!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
My oh my, I saw photo shots of the moment earlier, unaware that you were on board.

I was and probably taking photos as well!!! haha

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):

Yes, they better not miss the plane parking and the arrival of Qatar's CEO!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):

It is an experience i won't forget

My first gift from Croatia!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):

Me too, lol I need to get used to that too!

Quoting Reply 19):
the meeting with the Croatian guys on a terrace (How did you talk them into filming?

haha, they are my friends, and really awesome friends they are!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
the view of Croatian beautiful nature like watching a National Geographic documentary, especially the swimming snake. .. everything just left me speechless.

Thank you, that means alot!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
I am delighted, excited and blessed with your video and yourself as a good friend of mine.

Thank you so much and I can only say, likewise.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
I do not know what others think, but you are rightly the ambassador of Croatia to all of us.

That's the nicest comment I've received for this video. Its an honour to have that label for such an awe-inspriing country! Thank you so much, Suryo!

Stipica and Suryo, thanks so much once again for your feedback! Enjoy your weekend!

Bests,
Gavin
