Greetings fellow a.netters. This is going to be my first trip report so go easy on me.
I am an engineering student pursuing my degree from georgia tech in atlanta. I am also an aviation enthusiast with the dream of owing my own airline someday ( Yes I dream big  )

So it was time for me to go back home to new delhi , india from atlanta , georgia. My father had booked me united airline. Even though I was not very excited because I had not heard too many good things about the continental service to India. But getting a reasonable fare my father went ahead with it. I usually fly british airways and I am used to the stop over in london. This would be my first ultra long haul flight , so I was kind of excited.

The first part of my trip included a united express flight from atlanta's Hartsfeild Jackson Airport to Newark Liberty Airport.
At check in for my flight I found out that united does not allow a second piece of checked in baggage. This was a big disappointment because I am very used to the british airways system because I am very used to carrying to 2 checked in bags. Never the less I paid the 70 dollars surcharge on my second bag and I was on my way. Security was a breeze and I went straight to my gate. But before that I had camera out and did capture some " scenery " outside.

I then found out my flight was delayed by 35 minutes , this was a bummer but i had plenty of time to catch my connection so I was not worried , this only meant more pictures (Y).

Flight 1 Atl- Newark
Type of Aircraft : CRJ-700
Scheduled time: 3:25 pm
Actual time : 4 15 pm
Load : C class : 100%
Y class : 100%
Seat No: 10 A

It was a full flight and after push back at 4 pm we queued up behind the other planes. At around 4 15 pm we took off. It was a bumpy one and we experienced turbulence through out the flight. Drinks were served and the flight was uneventful apart from that. The one small thing I would like to point out is that after drinks were served , there was a second and third water service. I have never experienced that before on a domestic us flight , so I was impressed. The F/a was a very nice and friendly young lady who always had a smile on her face. We landed at newark at 6: 15 pm and I must say it was the smoothest landing I have ever experienced. Well done Pilot!

After landing we taxied for about 10 minutes and reached our assigned gate at terminal A. My connecting flight was from terminal C as most united international flights are from Terminal C. I then took the bus service which got me to my terminal. There I had a quick bite as I was apprehensive about the food on the flight. After reaching the boarding area I also decided to upgrade myself from economy to economy comfort. Economy comfort is basically the exit row seat which would mean more leg room and quicker service. The upgrade was 180 dollars. My flight was docked on gate C123 and the other flight to india , which was going to mumbai was at C121 , so there were a lot of indian people in that area.
Check in again was quick and I entered the 777.

Flight No.2 : Newark ( EWR) to New delhi (IGI)
Type of aircraft : Boeing 777-300ER
Scheduled time: 8:15 PM
Actual time: 8:20 PM.
Load: C class: 40%
Y class: 70%
Seat: 32L (Premium Economy)

I was delighted to find that it was not a full flight as this would mean better service. I was greeted by 2 friendly Fa s at the gate and i was shown to my seat. The first impression of the plain was that it was very clean and in immaculate condition. The aircraft had flown in from beijing and the ground staff had a done a great job cleaning the aircraft. After storing the baggage in the over head compartment I took my seat. I then realized that IFE had been already switched on so I started browsing the selection. I must united has a fantastic selection of movies and music. This was a nice surprise and I now knew I could easily kill time on this flight. Also the middle seat was empty and this meant all my stuff ( coat, headphones , wallet etc) could be kept there.

After a timely push back we approached the runway. After 5 minutes or so the Powerful General electric engines did there thing and we were soon airborne. It was a very smooth take off . The Fa s started preparing for the dinner service. After 25 minutes into the flight we were served dinner.I opted for the vegetarian option and was given rice with indian style curry. Food was passable and the salad was pretty good. Before dinner , drinks were served. Soon I started watching sitcoms on the flight. The big bang theory , how I met your mother , Two and half men and friends kept me entertained for a while.

3 hours into the flight I wanted to stretch so I deiced to go to the gallery. The Fa s were resting over there and I started chatting with one of them. She told me how usually the flights to delhi are full and we were lucky to be experiencing a light load today. Also in the gallery was a drinks trolley well stocked up with juices and soda s . Also during the whole flight drinks were being served regularly thus keeping the passengers well hydrated.

Also about 2 hours into the flight a small snack bag was also distributed which consisted off a hummus wrap , a bottle of water and a chocolate.

4 hours into the flight I decided to get some sleep. I slept for around 4 hours and when i got up were were still some 2800 miles away which meant around 5 and half more hours. I fiddled around with the IFE system and deiced to watch Sherlock Homes: A game of shadows. A darn good movie and now only 3 hours left.

I slept some more and got up just before the pre landing meal was being served. This time they had a south indian meal , which I opted for. Once again the food was just about bearable. Drinks were served once more and I had my 5th tomato juice this time.

A smooth landing 15 minutes ahead of schedule and we had arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport. We then taxied for about 5 minutes before stopping at our gate.Just before deboarding the aircraft I managed to convince the Fa to show me the crew rest area on the 777 to which she agreed. To my surprise it was located above the main deck.Once again the camera came out and I took some final snaps before my camera died. Immigration was pretty quick as this flight arrives much before the peak traffic hour , which is midnight. My bags took about 30 minutes to show up at the belt , but once they were out , I quickly collected them and was out.

Now for the rating ( Out of 10)

Check in : 7 ( Quick and efficient but lacks warmth)
Aircraft: 9 ( Immaculate Condition , Very Clean)
IFE: 9 ( Very good selection , but the touch screen needs to improve
Food: 6 ( need to improve both on quality and quantity)
Service: 9.5 ( One of the best services I have ever received , Bravo United)
Baggage :7 ( Took too much time)

So will I take this flight again.? A definite Yes!

Great trip report. I uploaded my photos on photobucket and copied the link directly to the post. Also does UA fly the B777-300 I thought they only had the B777-200 from pmCO and pmUA.

Hello fellow Yellow Jacket! Good first report. CO/UA have only the B777-200 and ER version in their fleets. The ones UA uses for the EWR-DEL flights are the B777-200ER with GE90-110B engines

My apologies. I meant to type in 777-200ER but made a typing error. Yes United airlines operate all 777-200 ER variants and have 55 of them in there fleet and all of them are powered by General Electric Engines. Also thank you guys for helping me with the uploading of the pictures I think i ll start putting up all the pictures very soon! Cheers!!

Hi Pradat!!

Thanks for the TR - good report for your first one, and thanks for appending the pictures later on. I am booked on this flight on 1 AUG this year with my sister. Although I have flown DEL-EWR before, and thought the service was good (TR: Continental 83: Delhi To Newark N/s, And EWR-DFW (by IrishAyes Jul 13 2010 in Trip Reports)) it was when the flight was operated by CO, with CO Crew, catering, etc).

I am toying with the idea of upgrading to BusinessFirst, but am tight on cash. So, I've been questioning whether or not the flight will be suitable in Y, so let me ask you this - was there free alcohol served in Y? (i heard that pmCO flights to Asia do not follow the UA TPAC policy on this). They were charging us back in 2010.

Thanks!

Yes they were charging for alcohol. It was 6 dollars for a beer and 7 dollars for all other spirits. Also If money is tight then i dont recommend upgrading your ticket to business because the service on the flight was very good and since august is also not the peak time to travel a good chance is that the flight might not be full.

Depends on how much the upgrade would cost and how much you are willing to pay.

The new LH business class is nicer than economy for sure, but is the money worth it?

The 748 is not yet scheduled on DEL-FRA-ORD - so not sure how you're sure of getting the 748. The LH Y is pretty similar to the UA Y - with 2 major exceptions. LH Y often does not have a PTV, and even if it does, the selection is not great. The LH Y does serve complimentary beer/ wine and spirits in Y. LH Y going to the US does allow 2 bags from what I recall.

Upgrade to J if you have the cash to spare - why not enjoy the flights! If budget is a concern, Y does reasonably OK.

There is a 3rd exception - LH's catering is generally better than UA's. You got the rest right...

As I said, it's a cost-benifit calculation. If the upgrade was for $200, I would jump for it. If it was $1000, I would rather use the money for an extra trip somewhere than the upgrade.

It depends on priorities, available cash, and cost of upgrade. Without that info, it's impossible to give a good recommendation.

According to LH, the 748i will be on the FRA-DEL route from 6. August so as long as you are flying after that date you should get it on the first leg. The new business class will indeed be on it, which is MUCH better than the current offering. I can't speak for the version on the 748i which I have not tried, but the new seat on the 333 was much more comfortable, the TV and entertainment system got a big upgrade, and the biggest thing: fully flat so you can get some sleep. The biggest negatives I noticed was that the tray tables were damn near impossible to get out of the armrest and the catering is the same.

Hope this helps.

The aircraft you actually flew up to EWR was an LRJ (EMB-145) per your photo also.
We (United) in ATL don't run the CRJ700s up to EWR. The EMB-170s and LRJs run to EWR, IAH the
CRJs (both the 200s and 700s usually fly to IAH) and the LRJs. CLE gets the LRJs usually.

Back on topic, PLANIAC787, you should be advised that your ATL-EWR aircraft is clearly not a CRJ-700, but an Embraer ERJ-145.
And no, United's fleet of 777s is not entirely GE powered... most of it consists of pmUA birds, which were powered by Pratt & Whitney 4000 engines.
But, great first report, and I'm glad to see all the photos!

Yes , A mistake I made. I clearly wrote down on a piece of paper that it was an Embraer Jet. Actually too be honest I had realized my mistake a while back I was hoping for some of the members to correct me. It clearly shows the passion people have towards aviation (Y). And yes I appreciate your comment. Glad you enjoyed my report. I have written my second TR as well Check it out.

Any of you aviation enthusiast feel United Airlines ( or rather all of the US carriers ) should improve on there baggage allowance ! Most of the european carriers allow 2 check in bags.. And united did not let me.. And if I remember correctly none of the other us airlines allow more than 1.. What say my peeps?
