flybmi.com to close
Last updated: Friday 28 September 2012
By 28 October 2012 the transition of bmi International flights to British Airways flights will be complete, and the www.flybmi.com website will be closing.

A quick history by RyanairGuru (From airliners.net travel poll)

Quote:

BMI was founded in 1938 as Air Schools Ltd.

It has been renamed: Derby Aviation in 1948, Derby Airways in 1959, British Midland Airways in 1964, BMI British Midland in 2001, BMI Airways Ltd in 2003.

74 years of flying history now gone

Like Phillip (OA260) did earlier this year:
British Midland International-A History A Tribute. (by OA260 Apr 12 2012 in Trip Reports)

here is my tribute to this great airline.

INTRODUCTION

I wanted to empty my DC account, but was intimidated by the BD network, until i realized they used to service Ethiopia. The departure time was far to be attractive, however no other destination could fit my available short calendar.

I did not carry the best camera thus the pictures quality is altered. Also bear with me because with the time some details might not be so obvious.

I tried to check-in on line but after a couple of failed tries i gave up and decided to do it like the old way.

ADDIS ABABA AIRPORT

A Lada taxi (Do Ethiopians use any other type of car than this) dropped me off 3 h prior the flight. The terminal of ADD is simply beautiful and shows a real modern feeling from outside. I now share travellers' point of view stating that NBO is still the third world.

The queue for pre security checks snaked outside the terminal building due to the numerous overnight ET long haul flights but moved steadily.

When my turn came to check in on the J counter the welcoming agent was given the passport and the booking number. After 5 minutes he asked me for the e-ticket number. I remained perplex for few seconds as never being requested that information in any other BMI flights, before trying to look for it in one my printed document.
Since i could not retrieve it, he told me to stay aside while he would deal with the rest of the passengers.
Luckily on the first sector to Jordan, 3 passengers checked in and he called me back afterwards to finalize the process. 10 minutes or so later, puzzled of the amount time spent to issue a basic BP, i questioned him about the issue.
Embarrassed, he replied that the booking does not exist. I was stunned and worried
he stated that the e-ticket number could not appear somehow thus resulting of the non validity of the ticket.

A similar situation lived in Zambia on a domestic flight, came to my mind, when a Mama who wanted to change her tickets, was shouting at the reservation agent because of her 3 tickets were not displayed in the system. At that time i thought it was sketch, and found the whole scene quiet hilarious! (also because i got a ticket thanks to her misfortune)

Well on that day, it was less funny and more annoying.

Of course the agent was told that i've never been asked for a e-ticket number, neither recalled that BMI ever emailed me any at all time. Of course he saw the booking number, the seat selection and confirmation email, nevertheless no boarding pass could be printed whatsoever.
He called the station manager, who did not succeed either and we all headed towards his office to show all the proof in my possession in the computer.

He scrutinized carefully and admitted that indeed something went wrong somewhere and finally apologized.

In a meantime, he also tried to contact the DC center in the UK, outside the working hours resulting on those propositions:

- Waiting overnight here in Addis, until the very first minutes of the DC center opening or
- Purchasing a new ticket, in economy at usd 699. (on a top of the usd 110 previously paid for the taxes and surcharges)

I opted for the later due to my commitments the day after and above all because no accommodation nor meal were given.

The station manager gave me his business card and a print out summing up of all the passenger datas (don't know the official name of this document) and mentioning the errors of the system.

Before heading back to the check-in desk again, by compassion he "upgraded" me to business class. For the useless information: this was my very first time being suggested freely a higher class on a long haul flight.

http://i849.photobucket.com/albums/ab52/kigalilongwe/bmi_amman/CIMG6861.jpg

I lost plenty time and the mood shaded on writing and taking pictures for the report. The second check in was a breeze same goes to the immigration procedure

The air side area very bright and did not contained many travellers. With 25 spare minutes i payed a quick visit to the lounge used for ET and Star Carrier, Upon entering one of the passengers asked the receptionists where would be the gate of the BMI flight, they took a paper list and checked the screen and answered him at gate quiet far from here. I was deeply concerned as the station manager clearly indicated me another gate number closer. It turned out to be exact what the SM said.

On itself the terminal 2 lounge was okay, but some hot dishes cold and dry seemed placed here for age, i did not dare tasting any of those. Just a quick juice to refresh the insane moment lived now part of the past.

No boarding announcement was made at the lounge, the screen just show the message to set off to the conveniently located gate in front of the lounge.

The welcome was perfect with a smile from a female senior pursuer with light German accent and " a glad to see you here" indeed me too i was glad to see them now

Once settled down into the comfortable seat a flight attendant suggested a welcoming drink, it was late but i chose a glass of bubbly just for the try – surely not Laurent Perrier – but a good taste and refreshing because the heat in Ethiopia could still be perceived.

She then came to distributed the headphones, the amenity kit and to collect the glass. There were three passengers in J cabin.

On time we 've been pushed back and take off quickly, once cruising the crew offered a choice of two breakfasts (one sweet option) to eat. The omelette sandwich sounded much better.

After a crazy evening, the Voyager Magazine would venetually help to select a musical channel and having a forty winks. I've initially thought that it was a headphone issue, that have been replaced immediately, or a seat IFE unit problem as one could frequently meet anytime, but unfortunately the last desperate reboot proved that the sound of the music channel refused to work. The flight attendant, so sorry, has been forgiven so quickly due to my tiredness. So with no choice i've sticked to the Planehunter's most favorite show broadcast on most of overseas/international trips: The route map.

Concerning the seat, i liked it, comfortable enough, few days ago i flew from IST to KGL in J on their 738 and believe me or not, BD seat had a much better recline, a good width a PTV (not fully working though), and some nice leather colors.

Trashes were collected quickly and the cabin crew enjoyed a now – ex fifth freedom route – peacefully. One of them read a book on that seat.

Before dawn, we landed on time in Jordan and nobody got off, apart from the cabin crew. One of the passenger discussed most of the lay over with the crew, about, if i've understood properly, the employees' future . One could see that crew member answered with a mixed feeling of passion and sadness.

BD914: leg Amman (AMM) – London (LHR)

The both cabin welcomed many passengers, Y seemed performing well whilst the front cabin J offered one vacancy: the seat next to me. Very nice!

The new crew handed over the menus prior departure, the headphones and welcoming drink. Some passengers raised an issue about the connection but thy were told them to wait a bit.

Once take off the plane securely turned North East to [Avoid Israel] stay in Jordan.

I was handed over a menu, and thought about keeping it but the crew took it back so from memory the breakfast menu offered a choice "brunch", pancakes with chocolate syrup or pastry.
The fruits plate was disappointing, for the presentation and the contain. The main hot plate revealed to be standard to what other fellows a.netters received, and succeed to fulfill the hopes!
The music system was not operational neither on this segment, so again PH's most reliable feature saved me.

I was served by a friendly SENIOR pursuer, the same type of one can find on AA, probably over 45 yo. She was so prompt and reactive and smiling all the time.

Again flight was smooth and here most of the business women/men deeply focused on their works.

Transit at London Heathrow T1

Processing the immigration and the custom (without luggage) i've made my way to the arrival lounge at the first floor of the terminal one!

It was easy to find out the way, once inside, you can pick up your own selection from the buffet or wait a short time for the table service. As Philip (OA260) would do, i've tried obviously both!
A so needed shower proved its convenience before hitting the buffet.
Rather small, i was approached by a friendly lady whom explained the principles and allowed me to take few pictures inside.

Waiting for my signal, she decided to cook and bring over the filling hot breakfast:

The table service meal consisted of for the breakfast menu on:

- Scrambled eggs or poached eggs served with savoury waffle and brown or white toast
- Full English breakfast (pork sausage, bacon, scrambled egg, black pudding, mushroom and half a tomato
- Haddock with poached egg
- Bacon or sausage sub
- American Pancakes served with Marple syrup
- Omelet and cheese bagel

Exceeding my expectations, an haddock fillet was enough for now.   .

BD058: leg London (LHR) – Edinburgh (EDI)

I had to check in again to Edinburgh because of the two separate bookings, even if the Station Manager in ADD allowed me to change it thrice in a row because of the initial ordeal.

Two ground staff checked the booking class and allowed me to get BP, i could take my small carry-on bag on board but with my rucksack, i decided to wander freely inside the terminal.

Passports control and security check were hassle free and in no time i fancied some nice views on the sunny afternoon from T1.

The cabin was completely full. I always thought that in Y+ the seat next to mine would be vacant... when i first flew with BMI as a Gold they often sold it like that, never-mind, in regard of the length of the routing.

Pushed back late of 15 mins, and following the longish taxiing to the active runway, the pilots expected a rolling take off but after rolling for 100-200 meters, the ATC, supposedly, forced them to exit at the first taxiway on the right for a conventional departure. I really did not need this , having a important appointment in the evening...

the second try was OK

Nowadays, I'm getting frustrated because i've never been able to approach and land easterly in EDI with a seat on the right.

Collecting my small luggage happened 8 minutes after the beginning of the disembarkation. This represented my very last flight with British Midland International.

Final words
:

The hardcore situation lived in Africa could disturb some of you but all in all and at the end of the day, there is no way to complain about them because:

Despite the negative rate of change charging GBP10 extra, Few weeks afterwards, a full refund of the expenses was sent.
- An excuse letter equivalent of the amount of BD DC miles earned for this trip was received
- They even topped up the miles flown on that sector with the prime
- And most important, an official invitation was made to convert the DC miles to the British Airways Executive Club.

Basically without flying BA yet, my BAEC account owns enough miles to fly from East Africa ( Entebbe, Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam) in Eco and certainly very soon in J, for "free".

Also, the whole BMI staff was wonderful throughout my all travels, and God knows that during the crisis one must be a real team player. I have never had to complain whatsoever even if directly welcomed "straight forward" gold status.

I've always loved BMI and i miss already his generous DC program. Congratulation for this memorable Era

Rest in peace and long life to all the crew worldwide.

FYI: the dude in Ethiopia has been sent to London and should now work for BA. I personally thank him for all his efforts.

Many thanks for reading, comments and corrections are valuable

Nice TR!

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
The terminal of ADD is simply beautiful and shows a real modern feeling from outside.I now share travellers' point of view stating that NBO is still the third world.

Yeah, outside... There are only 2 BIG problems.
1. This "modern" airport is only having ONE washroom after security inside the waiting lounge at the gates!
2. Unfortunately, some ET International flights depart from the "old" terminal (officially domestic traffic only)- Welcome to Africa. I can't describe the status of this terminal- it is not even close to any "Third World" standards! What a shame!

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
I was stunned and worried
he stated that the e-ticket number could not appear somehow thus resulting of the non validity of the ticket.

Yeap, working at the airport- I have this problem nearly every day. Always have a look into your booking and check your e-ticket numbers.
You can do so (for most airlines) by using:
1. http://www.checkmytrip.com for AMADEUS bookings
2. https://www.virtuallythere.com for SABRE bookings

Professional human beings stood in front of me, first they deserve respect.
They tried to deal with the problem efficiently, be as clear as possible, and were honest all the way. It was not their fault at all and they proved it. So why having an aggressive attitude and show disdain towards them? and i guess that they would have prefered a quiet regular shift.

I am agreeing with you 110% here. But I see so many people being aggressive and unfriendly and getting down to a personal level if something bad happens to them. They just don't realise that the person in front of them just wants to help them and that this person is not at fault and has no control over the situation. Your situation was handled from both sides how such a situation should be handled in all cases, you stayed calm, played by the rules, the station manager upgraded you, BA compensated you.

Most of the times it is not going that smoothly....

Of course an A330 would have been better, especially for the comfort of direct route too but the it was rostered on Saudi routes and West Africa (FNA). Anyone know if the loads were good?
Do you know if their formerly leased B757 could have ply the distance ?

Most of the times it is not going that smoothly....

People (passengers) are often impatient and can loose temper if they are not provided the "awaited" satisfactory outcome in no time. Some of them often expect the ground staff or the crew to transform themselves in wizards by solving quickly some problems ( weather, plane delay, lost luggage and many more...) . Maybe travellers raise the voice because they do not want to be fooled by technical language since they paid for a service and something undue disorganises their plans.
By shouting insults to someone you rarely get his best effort done. that's only my two cents

Thanks for the report brings back memories when I transited through ADD earlier this year. The new terminal is nice and shiny although the facilities/shops/amenities airside IMHO still needs alot of work. The range of shops and food places were pretty limited and the toilets weren't the greatest. Mind you, terminal 2 is still streets ahead of the old terminal 1, which is run-down and definately needs a new lease on life.

Are they planning to build an additional terminal at ADD in the future?

Hi Leonard !

Thanks for another great report with great pictures !

Nice to see a last report on BD and on such an interesting route.

Too bad about your troubles in ADD and that you couldn't go. I always make sure I have my ticket numbers with me if I go on a paid ticket (which is VERY rare).

Flights seem okay but nothing too fancy. Seats look comfortable and about same as domestic First on a US carrier.

I'm glad that you got enough compensation to make you happy.

Looking forward to your next report !

Bonsoir Léonard,

What a great tribute to a 74 year old airline! Despite the booking hiccups, everything was sorted out to satisfactory and even beyond expectation, your first time ever upgrade! Congratulation!

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
The terminal of ADD is simply beautiful and shows a real modern feeling from outside. I now share travellers' point of view stating that NBO is still the third world.

Well, I just have to rely on you for this matter. I have never been to any of both airports.

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
pre security checks

Just like in Indonesia. Is liquid restriction enforced already at this point?

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
It turned out to be exact what the SM said.

So then, you were allowed more time to spend in the lounge.

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
but some hot dishes cold and dry seemed placed here for age, i did not dare tasting any of those.

Shame! Those dishes looked tasty.

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
it was late but i chose a glass of bubbly just for the try

That is the spirit!

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
surely not Laurent Perrier

I would not bother that much. The experience of having a bubbly as welcome drink was just enough!

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
The omelette sandwich sounded much better.
Quoting eastafspot (Reply 1):
a choice "brunch", pancakes with chocolate syrup or pastry.

The savory option would have been my choice as well.

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
One of them read a book on that seat.

How nice! Did you engage in any conversation with the crew members?

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
One could see that crew member answered with a mixed feeling of passion and sadness.

I can imagine the crew member’s feeling. The crew member might have served BD for many years and did not know what to expect from the new employer.

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 1):
the seat next to me. Very nice!

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 1):
Can you name the five following stadiums:

Err… Boleyn Ground, Olympic Park, Emirates Stadium, Wembley Stadium, Harrow School?
By the way, can I go on? RAF Northolt and Heathrow!

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 1):
Be aware when you book here ;- ) : All the runway side rooms don't necessarely get a "view" to the activity. Unlucky i got one with these trees one day.

Thanks for the tip.

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 2):
Rather small, i was approached by a friendly lady whom explained the principles and allowed me to take few pictures inside.

How accommodating of her.

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 2):
Exceeding my expectations, an haddock fillet was enough for now.

There is nothing wrong to stick to somewhat healthier option.

Thank you so much for sharing. What a lovely Saturday afternoon read!

Thanks for sharing. What a pity about the problems in ADD.
I share your opinion that the local station manager handled things well. It's not his fault if the travel agent, in this case DC, does by mistake not issue any tickets. However he took it seriously, assisted you how he could and even upgraded you. BD then made the refund and offered you compensation.

Great it worked out fine in the end.

In Rwanda , we call this " Article 15" literally translated : "what to do when you don't have anything".

Anyway, your mind naturally raises the most essential question that went through my brain on that night, thank you for questioning about the "what if...?":

Probably you could not have flown out Ethiopia on that night , BUT you could have sleep and wait until 10 am at the airport. Everything depends on your personality... you seem anticipating facts more than enduring them, so you can adapt to many unusual and unexpected situations...

All i can advise to you is that don't rely on luck whatsoever when travelling... always make sure you know and can prove your rights at all anytime!

Quoting sjacob (Reply 15):
But anyway, ADD looks like out of Africa...very nice terminal.

If everything goes normal, you'll see it again in better. BTW, have you ever consider Ethiopian for your trips?

Thank you Jacob

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Just like in Indonesia. Is liquid restriction enforced already at this point?

I think so, relatives can not go beyond too.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
So then, you were allowed more time to spend in the lounge.

It happened upon entering so it did not affect the duration of the stay here

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Shame! Those dishes looked tasty.

+ 1, they were tempting! At midnight i suspect that staff did not bother that much refilling

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
The experience of having a bubbly as welcome drink was just enough!

And to compare also   !

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
How nice! Did you engage in any conversation with the crew members?

Not really, I was exhausted

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
I can imagine the crew member’s feeling. The crew member might have served BD for many years and did not know what to expect from the new employer.

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Err… Boleyn Ground, Olympic Park, Emirates Stadium, Wembley Stadium, Harrow School?
By the way, can I go on? RAF Northolt and Heathrow!

Huh, what about the airports before then?    (just kidding,)
Seriously, your are awesome i can only applause your knowledges    , shame to all londoners!

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Thanks for the tip.

We've got a room with a number like 2008 or 2010, at the second floor

Quoting akhmad (Reply 19):
Thank you so much for sharing.

I'm truly glad you've stopped by and commented it, thank you.

Hello Reifel

Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
Thanks for sharing

You are welcome

Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
What a pity about the problems in ADD.

Terrible start indeed

Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
It's not his fault if the travel agent, in this case DC, does by mistake not issue any tickets.

Do you know how this dysfonctionnement can occur frequently?

Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
that the local station manager handled things well
Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
However he took it seriously, assisted you how he could

Hats off to him, he was an asset for this airline and i'm sure for BA now!

Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
and even upgraded you.

The icing on the cake!

Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
Great it worked out fine in the end.

It was quiet stressful but all in all no negative impact left

Actually it was the third, one with LH on LYS-MUC and one with WX (Cityjet) on EDI-CDG, nothing exciting apart from the meal! How about you?

Only twice so far. One with QR on LHR-DOH (from J to F) and one in LH on AMS-FRA.

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 21):
Not really, I was exhausted

That's fair enough.

Humm, nice routing on one of the routes that gets the 787... did you have the time or the opportunity to climb the mount Meru or the Kili? I keep a great souvenir from Arusha, less for JRO...

Climbed Kili and did a safari as well
Quoting reifel (Reply 20):
Did you get a heavy to JRO? ( B767 or better?)

Was a 737 to JRO and a Dash 8 on the way back (both were via Mombasa rather than direct ADD-JRO.

Quoting eastafspot (Reply 21):
Really nice, is it unlimited?

Yeh it was free and no restrictions, although it wasn't super quick.

Cheers

Impressive, very well done   . In which game park have you been? did you manage to snap the Big 5s?
Will you have time to post a link or TR?

Quoting SYDSpotter (Reply 23):

Hi Leonard,

excellent, thanks! I was drawn to your report, after my own experiences last year on BMI from ADD   It seems nothing runs smoothly with that combination!

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
lounge used for ET

Those seats look very comfy, though the food offerings do look a bit messy. Though I'm sure they tasted good!

Nice to see the front of the BD mid-haul aircraft again, naturally I was in the back

Do you happen to know, if that was a new road in Jordan being built?

Nice overhead shot of Southend airport too.

I do think the first stadium is White Hart Lane, home of Tottenham Hotspur? Though being a supporter of neither them nor West Ham, I can't be sure.

Overall, an excellent report, on a great airline. A shame they won't be the same any more.

Thanks

Hi Leonard!
Nice report again, and glad to see that you had some nice BD flights, before it was too late.
I have one bmi flight under my belt, and it was one I really enjoyed ( Try It Before It's Gone, TXL & Bmi ARN-TXL-LHR-ARN (by deltamartin Jan 9 2012 in Trip Reports) ).

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):
Before heading back to the check-in desk again, by compassion he "upgraded" me to business class

Shame about the issues, but good that he upgraded you for free though.

Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):

Do you really know London? Ok! Can you name the five following stadiums:

Well, I do recognize the Olympic and Wembley stadiums, I also think one is Emirates Stadium. No clue about the other two.
Quoting eastafspot (Thread starter):

Despite the negative rate of change charging GBP10 extra, Few weeks afterwards, a full refund of the expenses was sent.
- An excuse letter equivalent of the amount of BD DC miles earned for this trip was received
- They even topped up the miles flown on that sector with the prime
- And most important, an official invitation was made to convert the DC miles to the British Airways Executive Club.

Glad to hear that.

Martin
