Avrojetting to and from Copenhagen!!

]

Background:

November 2011, Fellow member and friend Daniel (LH4532) and I were talking about meeting each other again in the beginning of 2012. At the same time I was looking into the options to log the Avrojets from Brussels Airlines since the Avro’s are starting to get pretty rare and I only logged 2 flights with our national Belgian flag carrier (Brussels-Malaga-Brussels back in 2007). So why not combine these criteria? Soon I booked a weekend roundtrip to Copenhagen on the Avro 100. Daniel would be flying later the saturday evening from Frankfurt on Lufthansa and we would meet up the next morning in Copenhagen before returning home.

Pre-departure:
Fast forward through time to the beginning of spring of 2012! Monday 26 March I had failed the oral psychological tests of the Belgian railways due to the very ‘objective’ way of judgement throwing away a lifetime of a career, a year of hard work and quite a bit of Euros. Thank goodness it was time to meet the sky again the next weekend. Friday March the 29th at around 9:00 I recieved a text message inviting me to check in online, soonly enough I did and selected seat 19A for the outbound leg of the trip. Later that evening I wanted to upload some pictures of my trip a few weeks prior to Canada In the meanwhile you can see these reports in here:
To Canada? On Air Canada If Course! (by MSS658 Aug 31 2012 in Trip Reports)
Toronto City Centre? But Not On Porter! (by MSS658 Sep 23 2012 in Trip Reports)
Toronto, Niagara And A Delayed YYZ-CDG! (by MSS658 Oct 22 2012 in Trip Reports)

Unfortunately my laptop did not work so well with me, ensuring that I only went to bed at around midnight! The night was very short and at 5:15 the alarm went off again. After the usual morning routine I was ready to start the journey at 6:30. On the way to the airport I crossed numerous busses, cops and trucks for the weekend cycling event in my region known as the Tour of flanders. Usually a weekend where we locals are trapped in our house making the fact that I’m heading up in the air even more exciting. At 7:30 I arrived at Zaventem-village where I dropped of my car.

7:40 the bus arrived and I arrived at the bus terminal a few moments later.

Leaving Brussels airport
Day 1: 31 March 2012
Firstly a quick look at the FIDS, seems like a pretty calm morning in BRU (sorry for the bad pic) and most important SN2257 to Copenhagen is running on time!

The Brussels Airlines desks marked with it’s own logo, a lot of people going out on spring holiday this morning

Firstly I went to the kiosk to print my boarding pass. After several times it failed and proceeded to the desk. I asked about the load and was told the flight was 100% this morning. After thanking the agent I started my morning walk to the A-pier. Looks like this the chocolate route passes here as well

For the people that are familiar with BRU, this place looks more familiar. The small walk to the A concourse

Security was not so busy at this time and I was quickly though, when I arrived at the gate I still had about 30 minutes before boarding.
Iberia 3207 to Madrid (A321 EC-HUH) and Lufthansa 1005 to Frankfurt FRA (A320 D-AIQA)

KLM Cittyhopper 1722 to Amsterdam (Fokker 70 PH-KZP) I flew this bird on 27 March 2005 on the exact same flight btw

Austrian Airlines 0351 from Vienna (Airbus A320 OE-LBT)

Delta Air Lines 80 from Atlanta who will depart back in a few hours as Delta Air Lines 141 to New York JFK! Since the summer season Delta sends it’s reconfigured 767”s to Brussels on both routes.

Brussels Airlines 3823 to Budapest (Avro 85 OO-DJM)

By 8:55 it was time to head over to the gate! A56 would be used this morning for the flight to Copenhagen. Our aircraft had arrived at 8:30 from Bologna as SN 3130, taking a closer look to the airframe I was not so pleased to see that OO-DWA was operating SN 2257 this morning. I flew OO-DWA on a round flight above Belgium back in October 2005 back when it was SN Brussels Airlines so it would be a re-meeting. Boarding began at 9:00 and I soon went through the jetty:
Woops, almost forgot! one pic of OO-DWA

At 9:05 I was on board of:

I was welcomed by the purser in his 30s and the captain who was a bit older! When greeting both men I commented how glad I was to be on an ‘old’ plane. The Captain replied back that 15 years isn’t old at all. Well maybe it isn’t... I soon made my way back to the second last row where another F/A in her 30s greeted me. After getting settled in the b.light cabin I noticed how well padded the seats where, the legroom was pretty good as well (appears to be smaller on the pic due to my file in the seatback pocket)

Parked next sistership OO-DWK

OO-DWK it is indeed

While the cabin started to fill slowly I found it the ideal time to make my bag lighter and give the chocolate box to the crew. The F/As where very thankful for this. Soon my seatmate appeared as well. A young woman who just arrived from an overnight trip from Toronto heading towards Copenhagen. Boarding was soon complete and the captain came on the loudspeakers announcing a flight time of 1hr25 mins to Copenhagen and a pretty bumpy approach. At 9:29 Pushback commenced! Not so much to see during taxi since most traffic was on the other side of the aircraft! In matter of minutes we approached the threshold of runway 25R.

Your typical morning here in Brussels. Jet Airways, Delta Air Lines and Brussels Airlines

At 9:35 our jumbolino started to speed up and we were soon airborne, not long after we reached an comfortable cruising altitude.

Not long after the service began. Brussels Airlines has 3 classes of service on it’s Avro. B.Business, B.flex and B.light. The service in B.light concluded BOB. While the assortiment was ok I found the prices to be on the steep side. 5 EUR for a small orange juice and a muffin is quite hight given the portion I got. Thankfully the gift trick worked and I got the Orange juice on the house!
OO-DWA is quite a veteran in the Brussels Airlines fleet and it’s starting to show

View over Northern Netherlands, sorry for the bad quality of the pic due to scratchmarks on the window.

A quick view of the cabin of this jumbolino while stretching!

When I returned to my seat I wanted to take a picture of the approaching Danish coast but my camera started to act weird... This could only mean one thing that my battery ran on empty.. Oh well nothing we can do about it. The remainder of the flight I looked trough the window and talked a bit with my neighbour. At 10:27 our descent started and at 10:53 OO-DWA touched down on runway 4L. After a short taxi we reached gate A15 at 10:57. There are numerous who detail the CPH approach on here. Including 2 reports on the very same flight, fellow members Nils (sultanils) and Petteri (Flyingfinn) have taken the same flight shortly after

Once parked I was able to pull out my iphone and made some pics.

Arrival in Copenhagen Kastrup airport
At 11:00 I was offboard the aircraft. I soon ran into a line of people lining up for the return leg to Brussels as SN2258 at 11:40, however to reach the windows you had to have a valid boarding pass, so no decent pic of OO-DWA today. On the way to the main corridor we passed this Beautiful Boeing 717 of Blue1. She would be leaving at 12:00 as KF 612 to Helsinki

After quite a long walk I arrived the baggage hall. Here is the FIAS

After a short walk from the arrivals hall I found the Copenhagen metro. Quite interesting as the metro isn’t driven by a real live driver, resulting in front row seating.

Some 10 minutes later I arrived at the metro stop near my B&B. At the metro station there was a small sandwich bar where I grabbed some lunch. Not so good and a bit overpriced IMO.

At 12:45 I arrived at my B&B where I had the luck to check in immediately. Over my stay in B&B Copenhagen I can only say good words of. Only a 10 minute walk from the centre and a 10 minute metro ride from Copenhagen airport and this all for about 350 DEK, not bad if you ask me. And a great sized room as well (taken a few hours later when my camera was a bit more charghed.

Due to lack of sleep the previous night I was already starting to feel tired and decided to catch up with some sleep. I got awakened at 14:30 by a message inviting me to check in for my flight back to Brussels the next day. But first let’s check another gift I received from the SN crew, a Business class amenity kit filled with some refreshment towels and a little snack. Just what I needed after my little power nap. Soon I selected seat 17A for my return segment on SN2262 for the next day.

At this time it was 15:30 and it was time to explore the city. I really did like the Danish architecture.

The main shopping street:

Denmark... home of the lego!!

Some nice ambience throughout the streets in Copenhagen!

I did pass a lot of bakeries with large sized croissants, chocolate rolls,...

As tradition calls I visit the train station as well.

After another walk to the marina I settled in for a great dinner! I must say I’m generally impressed about the city. I do need to come here once again.

After having a great dinner I walked back to the hotel where I found my bed at around 22:30 after spending an enjoyable evening. In the meanwhile fellow member and friend Daniel was in the air onboard LH 0832 from Frankfurt to Copenhagen due in at 23:25 and would sleepover in the airport. Something which I do envy him for doing it.

Day 2: April 1 2012
Departing Copenhagen Kastrup airport
7:30, the alarm goes off after a long and solid night. After the usual morning rituals I ate a nice and filling Danish breakfast.

After packing and paying I was ready to hit the road at 9:30. After a 10 minute walk I reached the subway station. Going downhill from here on.

The subway stations are nice and modern!

After a short ride I arrived at the airport at 10:00 and met Daniel near the metro station! After greeting each other we walked over to Terminal 2 where I wanted to print my boarding pass for Brussels Airlines SN2262 to Brussels.

Brussels Airlines, proud member of the Star Alliance

I first wanted to use the kiosk in but I noticed SN did not have it’s check-in application that I could select. So up to the desk then. Brussels Airlines, Austrian Airlines and SWISS International Airlines share the same desk at terminal 2. When I arrived at the desk there was nobody present after waiting for about 10 minutes I decided to walk to the kiosk again and tried checking in through the SWISS application and thankfully I could print my boarding pass on LX stock! For an A.netter it’s a piece of cake but for the average traveller it wouldn’t be fun at all. For this reason I give 2 big thumbs down for Novia and SN on this part. Soon I went through security into the main hall. The departures hall is the standard wooden floor found in most major Scandinavian airports

The Tax free shop!

Since Daniel would be returning back to Frankfurt on LH 831 at 19:30 and SN 2262’s departure time was still 4 hours away we both decided to go hit the Novia lounge. I was quite happy about the offerings and seating. I do need to say that I’m not an experienced lounge user so I’m happy to please on this case. Extended breakfast

Seating area

Food and snack offerings.

After a wonderful conversation with Daniel it was 13:00 and decided to make a stroll throughout the airport. After saying our goodbyes I was on my way. Nice view from up here btw..

Terminal 2 and 3 are used for all international flights and are connected to each other. Concourse A and B are used for the schengen destinations. The majority of the traffic is operated by SAS, like this CRJ 900 who arrived from somewhere in Europe.

Or this MD82, better catch it while they are still flying around

A quick peek at the FIDS! Gate A9 has just been assigned for Brussels Airlines flight SN2262 to Brussels

Quick walk up to Concourse A again

One of Estonian Airlines just acquired Embraer 170s at the time (ES-AEA). This bird rested here for a while and would be leaving as OV144 to Tallinn at 15:00

Blue1 and SAS at Concourse C

Flybe 5652 to Stockholm Bromma (ATR 72 OY-ATL)

SK1593 to Brussels (MD 81 SE-DIR)

SAS Scandinavian Airlines flight 1593 departs just 35 minutes later than my Brussels Airlines flight at 15:05 For the ones who are interested, fellow members Nils (Sultanils) and Jonas (LH4116) have wrote a review on this very same flight. For the remainder of the time I stayed near gate A9 where things stayed quiet untill...

Brussels Airlines flight SN2261 arrived at 14:08

Unlike SN2257 to Copenhagen I was lucky this time to have a new airframe for me. Today OO-DWG has the honnors of bringing me back to Brussels this afternoon.

By now our boarding passes were scanned and we were kept in a holding pin while the inbound passengers where deboarding. The Aircraft was turned around very quickly, just 5 minutes after arriving on stand boarding was called and at 14:20 I was on board of.

I was greeted by 2 middle aged female flight attendants and found my seat quickly. The chocolate box appeared out of the bag quickly and gave it to the Flight Attendant who was working in the rear galley. When looking out of the window I realized I should have selected a seat more in the back to get better views. But nothing we can do about it I suppose since the flight is fully booked. Soon the doors were closed and pushback commenced at 14:37. The weather isn’t that good here anymore.. Time to leave back home

A very short taxi to runway 22R today where we took off at 14:44

Soon back in the Danish skies

Brussels Airlines is since a few years member of Miles and More as well.

The weather isn’t improving quite yet above Germany

Due to the sunlight it was actually pretty hard to make decent pictures, a quick pic however of engine number 1.

Interesting way to close the window shades

Soon the service round started again in the b.light cabin, BOB was the same overpriced stuff as on the flight to Copenhagen! Luckily again, thanks to the chocolate box the drink was on the house again. I bought me a little snack as well.

The rest of the flight passed by rather uneventful, I spent the majority of the time taking notes of both flights on the trip. Our descent into the Brussels area started at 15:37, the weather looks a bit nicer above eastern Belgium than in Copenhagen earlier.

Turning and descending towards runway 25L at Brussels.

Soon we broke through the clouds, the flaps and gear were lowered. For most people that have been in BRU already this scene must look pretty familiar.

At 15:57 our jumbolino touched down on runway 25L and made a rather quick taxi to the apron. Suddenly OO-DWG decides to turn left instead of heading straight to the A concourse. Soon it became clear that we would be having another spot. At 16:00 we came to a full stop right here besides EI-EDS (Aer Lingus A320) getting prepared for flight EI 635 to Dublin

Indeed, we parked at gate B11 a non schengen gate. When I asked one of the flight attendants why we were parked here the reason was more than obvious. OO-DWG would depart back at 17:10 towards Manchester as SN 2177. It was quite a long wait before we were able to deboard. I was maybe wondering if this meant a shorter walk to the terminal as well. At 16:10 things finally started moving and by 16:15 I was outside of the aircraft after saying the crews goodbye. One quick peek in the front office before deboarding.

Arrival in Brussels Airport
At the end of the jetway we were directed to go down the stairs where I had to wait again. Apparently I missed the first bus. The second bus came at 16:20 and soon departed again all the way to the A concourse. Seeing the B-concourse at this hour is quite awkward. Gates where I’m used to seeing Boeing 767s, Boeing 777s and Airbus A330s parked are now occupied by Airbus A320s and Avrojets. taking pics was almost impossible due to the dots on the bus. At 16:25 we arrived at the A-concourse where I started my long walk back to the main terminal area, passing by a bar with the finish of the Tour de flanders in my hometown.

After the usual hike back to the main terminal I noticed that Scandinavian Airlines flight 1593 from Copenhagen has arrived as well.

FIAS in Brussels!

At 16:40 I was back at the bus station where I had a short wait before I could continue my journey to Zaventem village where I arrived a bit past 17:00. Soon I was on the road again and managed to get home safely at 18:00 before dinnertime home.

Overall verdict

I do have quite a few things to say about this trip. It was a pleasure to fly the Belgian flag carrier and the Avro which is rare to log nowadays. Good crews and surprisingly comfortable seats, the only thing what did bother me was the Buy-on-board product which was a bit on the average side given the prices that Brussels Airlines charges. While SN is not one of the best carriers out on the short-haul market they are certainly not bad and would not hesitate to fly them again. I even booked my first long haul flight with them in a few weeks.

The ground handling on the other side was more of a mixed bag of emotions. Too start off with I could not print my boarding pass at Brussels (a better explanation was given on a future trip) at the kiosk. On the return trip I was disappointed by the handling in Copenhagen and Brussels. Having to find out myself that I had to go into another airline’s system to print my boarding pass wasn’t so professional IMO by Novia. Thankfully their lounge was a bit better with sufficient accommodations. On arrival in Brussels it took me almost 45 minutes (without checked luggage) to get outside which is a bit on the long side as well, given the low-volume of traffic at 16:00
About Copenhagen I must say it’s a nice city that I can recommend to anyone. Staying at the B&B Copenhagen was very nice as well and you really get good value for your money. At last it was a pleasure meeting Daniel in Copenhagen and thank him for convincing me to make this trip.  Overall Remarks.

Brussels Airlines 2257 from Brussels to Copenhagen (Total score is 73%):

Departure: 60% (Check in kiosks did not work, bust but not crowded)

Arrival: 70% (It’s a long walk towards the main terminal, but I don’t mind)

Brussels Airlines 2262 from Copenhagen to Brussels(Total score is 70%):

Departure: 60% (nobody at the counters, had to find my own way to get a valid boarding pass.)
Lounge: 70% (decent and comfortable eating and sitting options)

Seat Comfort: 80% (Roomy, comfortable and very good padding)
Crew: 80% (Friendly and efficient)

Interesting trip report- I love those BAes! The sound of the flaps retracting still gets me though!

Re the box of chocolates- did the chocolates actually cost you more than what a drink would have cost to buy onboard?
How do the crew react to you giving them chocolates? Just out of curiosity

Hi Marc,

Great stuff and it's always nice to see things that you've experienced yourself through someone else's eyes. You had a great time in Copenhagen 'the city' it seems. Unfortunately I have never been out of the airport once in all my flights to/from CPH. I hope some day I'll be able to

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
I recieved a text message inviting me to check in online

Since when does SN send text messages to invite you to check in? I have never had those.

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
the Tour of flanders.

I know that event and I understand that it's difficult to leave the house when it goes past. Damn cyclists

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
The small walk to the A concourse

Small? You must be joking lol!

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
5 EUR for a small orange juice and a muffin is quite hight given the portion I got. Thankfully the gift trick worked and I got the Orange juice on the house!

Last time I took that combo, it was only € 4 and that was after you trip. But I didn't get the drink for free

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
Including 2 reports on the very same flight, fellow members Nils (sultanils)

Thanks for the mention!

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
Or this MD82, better catch it while they are still flying around

Indeed. And BRU does still get them so it's high time to make another booking.

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
One of Estonian Airlines just acquired Embraer 170s at the time (ES-AEA).

This one is a standard feature in all CPH report it seems. A lovely plane and livery it is.

Quoting MSS658 (Thread starter):
Indeed, we parked at gate B11 a non schengen gate. When I asked one of the flight attendants why we were parked here the reason was more than obvious. OO-DWG would depart back at 17:10 towards Manchester as SN 2177.

You always experience these strange things at home base. So you were bussed to the A terminal? Too bad they didn't let you got through the B one, it only involves a passport control and it's much shorter to the way out.

Hello Marc!

Thanks for the nice story. Really nice pictures from Copenhagen, that´s a lovely city for sure. Nice looking B&B you find and good price too.

SN looks nice on both flights. Nice of you giving chocolate to the crews, it seems that they appreciate it

Greetings

Nice report Marc, thanks for sharing.

Good idea to fly the Avro while they are still around, and you made an excellent choice in destinations, Copenhagen is a wonderful city!

Nice report Marc..looks like you had a good trip to Copenhagen!

5 EUR for a small orange juice and a muffin is quite hight given the portion I got.

EUR 5 is pretty expensive. Was the box of chocolates worth more or less than your free drink!?

Hello Marc!

Another nice report with some nice pictures, thanks for sharing.
Looks like you had a nice weekend away and always fun to meet a fellow a.netter
SN looks quite ok, although I am indeed not all to impressed by the BOB. It is always nice to catch the Avro
Great pictures of Copenhagen too

cheers,

Hi Marc,

nice report again. Well done to get some more flights on the Avro, certainly a cute little airplane. And nice pictures from Copenhagen as well, interesting city. And to meet another a.netter there made it certainly even more enjoyable to visit, so well done here.

Interesting trip report- I love those BAes! The sound of the flaps retracting still gets me though!

Thanks, the Bae's are wonderfull aircraft!

Quoting raffik (Reply 1):
How do the crew react to you giving them chocolates? Just out of curiosity

Both crews where very pleased with the chocolates!

Hi Marc,

Great stuff and it's always nice to see things that you've experienced yourself through someone else's eyes. You had a great time in Copenhagen 'the city' it seems. Unfortunately I have never been out of the airport once in all my flights to/from CPH. I hope some day I'll be able to

Hi Nils
Thanks, glad you liked it. You really should visit the city one day!

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 2):
Since when does SN send text messages to invite you to check in? I have never had those.

Strange enough on a trip a few months later to GVA I did not get one neither...

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 2):
I know that event and I understand that it's difficult to leave the house when it goes past. Damn cyclists

Indeed, makes me feel bad that I did not plan that MAN meeting a weekend prior..

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 2):
Last time I took that combo, it was only € 4 and that was after you trip. But I didn't get the drink for free

Must have been a price change!

Quoting Sultanils (Reply 2):
Indeed. And BRU does still get them so it's high time to make another booking.

Good to know!

I was impressed about SN and the avro as well, just the BOB wasn't so good!

Another good read Marc. I'm still a little disappointed that I missed out on the SN Avro the other week, but at least now I have a better idea on what I missed out on!

Hey Marc,

Nice little report for your interesting short trip to CPH. Nice photos of town as well. I feel like despite CPH being a fairly popular airport with TRs here, we hardly ever see photos of downtown Copenhagen itself.

Side note: Due to my battery dying on top of decent the amount of pics are pretty limited, my apologies herefore

That sucks. That's why I travel with 2 backup batteries at all time. I'm kinda paranoid but it helps

Hi Marc,

nice report, good idea to fly on the SN Avros again before they leave the fleet. And of course it's always a pleasure to meet other members on a trip.

Hi Marc,

Thanks for this nice report. Good idea to catch some Avro flights whilst they're still around, I really like them. I liked the pics of Copenhagen, somewhere I've still not been but I'm sure I'd like it.

Shame about your battery dying, it always happens at the worst moment!

Happy flying
