Selamat datang, dear readers again,
I left you on the fantastic island Tioman, where we spend two nights
Is It Really Worth It To Fly For TOD? (by FLIEGER67 Dec 2 2012 in Trip Reports)
and now it´s time to fly again.
Well, with the wide choice of airlines operating ex TOD, we decided to go on Berjaya, for today only!

There is also a routemap to show:

With great thanx to, as usual:
http://www.gcmap.com/
TOD is counted as no. 226 on the departure airports map:

These are the previous 200 places:

Service J8 308 operated by Berjaya Air
Scheduled: 12.35 // 13.25
We say goodbye to the pleasant staff, the apes and goannas and joining this public service

No, wait, this one

There is simply no question to open the windows or not

For the, ahem, airport

No OLCI, but anyway not a minute to wait to leave our bags at the manual counter. Where you should screen you´re bag self service, guarded by a police guy. And after that simply lift it on one of these baggage carts not even before you stop in between by a scale to secure no overloading for the old flying lady!.
And well, a view around town seems possible

Cool teens riding the supernoisy motorbikes,
the louder, the slower, you know

Need a shuttle for an island?

Everything well connected

Believe it or not, the runway is in between all these trees

Well, also here, no climatization needed

Protected apron view

Surrounded by palms

Baggage carts, the latest edition!

Smelly restrooms like never cleaned before are also available.
Through security and simply catch another stamp from the same two smiling female officers to leave Malaysia again.
And what´s this?

It seems better to use all available brakes now

Made it!

Looking forward to a new registration, listen to me Berjaya!

I see different colours on this plane

Yeah, there is a 1/3 chance for another Dash-7 and this is it

Look into my eyes, so classic!

Turning

Engines stopped

I´am once again impressed about these special plane

Open the door, please

And the mountains close behind

Airside

Boarding, gate 1, of course

Booking is done via the Berjaya website,
the fare 60.00 Euro´s.
Under the wing, you know

Confirmed, this is 9M-TAL

The oily engine

Logo view

Leg no. 2 here on the Dash-7 like on schedule and the warm welcomed new entry to the log.
Built and delivered in 1988 to British Midland and since 1995 with Berjaya.
One of three in the fleet

And the undercarriage

12.45 am, short after schedule, "Berjaya" on the go for the 45 minutes back to Singapore. 34 sunny degrees here.
Heading for the runway, "Two-Zero" this time

Backtracking

Power

And lift off

Above the jetty

And the blue sea

Turning

Along the airport

The town

And the hotel

Leaving the island now

The beaches

And the mountains

In direction Singapore

I hope, it´s the right one!

Cabin view with the bright grey blue oldfashioned fabric seats

A close to 100% load of vacationeers this time.
Cabin crew is two female, elder and nice, FA´s.
Cockpit crew is from Malaysia.
The captain with a nice and detailed welcome inflight. All crew introduced by name.
No route info, but flightlevel is 10000 feet.
Kad Keselamatan, sure I know

Service is peanuts twice and free drinks.
Legroom

The cabin ceiling

Seat view, the second to last row this time, 11 A and B

And finally no way that this plane shows a little bit of age

Well, only a little bit, with a nasty toiletry smell along the whole flight. But nothing new, I´am used to this after the airport experience!

It´s better to have an technician on board, isn´t it?.
Like on this service.
Wheels down for Singapore

Touchdown at the 4000 meters runway "Two-Zero-Center", 1.30 pm, short after schedule again. 31 partly cloudy degrees here.
Parked beside the Tiger

Or what about Cebu Pacific?

The nowadays well known MRT does the job again and shuttled us back to Outram Park, where, not that it was even planned this way, also our next accomodation is not that far away.
Hotel Re at Pearl Hill.
Room first view

The bathroom

And for the second view

So what to do with this unfinished day in Singapore?.
Night Safari anyone?.
By MRT and bus till the Singapore Zoo for
just a recommendable experience

Absolutely amazing to see all that animals during nighttime

Bats

Bats so close by, you can even touch them while they eat

Back to the hotel with one of the very last subways

And soon thereafter, so it feels like, breakfast is ready

The lobby

Let´s go for a view downtown.
Marina Sands

In daylight

Chinatown

Strange to see that red balloons

Interesting to say the least

Streetlife

For the temple this way

Ah, the temple

Well, it´s indeed Chinatown

To burn some incense at the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Let´s go inside

Gold all around

Very well maintained

Guarded by monks

Ready for some confession

The ceiling

The main hall

And the monks

The exit or maybe the other entrance

Chinese anyone?

Further on for Little India

Shoes off, please

Or what about some fresh fruits

Yes, this is Little India

Kerbau road this way

The Sri Mariamman Temple

Closed this time

India or China?

Street life in Little India

Take care

Colourfull to say the least

And soon thereafter it´s time to head for the airport, by MRT, of course!.

Service Qantas QF 3345 operated by British Airways
Scheduled: 22.55 // 05.00
Where is London?

The same procedure here, seats are selected in advance and the guy at the QF premium counter accepted our bags without a minute to wait during check-in.
Looks like strange, isn´t it?

Up for the lounge, the CX one, to spot a couple of planes before it gets dark

Superb offers

And views

That´s the place to be with a view to the apron

Looks like nice, isn´t it?

Lion on the run

Absolutely no relationship here

The more European corner

Cebu Pacific again

Now that´s interesting, Myanmar International

Garuda on the way home

Tri MG

Jetstar, the big one

There is one more lounge to check now, the QF/BA example

With also nice offers

Till it´s time to go for gate C1

Well, I really dislike these security at the gate system here.
A well built queue at the gate when we arrived.
And the queue is not shorter during the next minutes, no way, longer and longer.
Boarding is good on the way inside till we´re through
for a view to this plane

The 744 is on schedule and this is G-BNLO, in the air with BA since 25.10.1990.
New to the log and leg no. 7 on type.
BA operates 52 examples of the 747-400, impressive.
Here is a story with G-BNLO:
http://avherald.com/h?article=43680f84
Welcome to BA long haul

11.00 pm, close to ontime, 12 hours 35 minutes made by "Speedbird" bound for London.
Leaving 28 degrees and some thunderstorms in Singapore.
Late boarding, ok that´s standard for me, but with the security at the gate situation, it was simply a rush from the end of the long queue for the plane with close to no one else anymore around.
No open seats to spot, that´s for sure a healthy load for BA tonight.
Cabin view with the dark blue fabric seats, ok so far, but really well used.
53 H/J, the last row two seater for us.
Cabin crew member serving our seats is a young english male FA, really nice and chatty

Cockpit crew is from England, the pilot with a very nice and detailed welcome on the ground. We have two captains in the office tonight, the cockpit crew is introduced by name.
Departure from the 4000 meters "Zero-Two-Left". "Speedbird" on the go for good old Europe.
Safety on board

Highlife magazine

Flightlevel maxium is 36000 feet above KUL-The Andaman Islands-DEL-Donetsk-Kiew-WAW-BER-HAJ-AMS and nothing else expected, some rough air above the Bay of Bengal.
Highlife also this way

But no way to miss this feature

Tooth brushes anyone?

Dinner with two options available

The veggies for me now

Breakfast BA style

Cabin view

Legroom

Really well loaded tonight

The FO is on the mike short prior to approach.
And the early morning London view

Sure, the last row for us

Touchdown at the 3901 meters "Two-Seven-Right", 04.45 am, 15 minutes ahead to schedule and 15 degrees with clear sky here.
Don´t get me wrong, I´am not the masochistic guy, but I spent the whole time between the short after departure served dinner and the breakfast close to London in dreamland, sure a new record for me!.
Short travel nights, you know.
The cabin was pleasantly tempered and the last row comfortable enough this way.
Servus BA with also a nice bye-bye from the captain on the ground

Well, at least to the 744!

Scheduled: 08.10 // 10.45
The EU entry checks went smooth, the busride was relaxed again with our flight as one of the very first early morning arrivals. And soon thereafter in T5, heading for one more lounge, BA´s south galleries

Well designed furniture

And most important, only a few other pax around

Good to go for a nice seat with a view

To spot for example this one

We should go for A10 and finally 10E now

But not before to notice a special flag

On departure

Leaving the lounge now

For some bus riding

Till this one, G-EUPX, the A319 like on schedule.
Leg no. 87 on type and new to the log.
On BA services since 14.12.2001, one of 44 in the actual fleet

Sure a good day for apron boarding

Looks like really nice in the bright morning sun.
18 degrees by the way

Boarding now

RR engine view

Close up

Up the stairs

Cockpit crew is from the UK, the captain with a very nice, detailed and relaxed welcome after boarding is completed.
Routing is via Lille and Luxembourg at maximum 37000 feet.
08.05 am, short ahead to schedule, 1 hour, 20 minutes back for Germany.
Departure from the 3658 meters "Zero-Nine-Right".
Safety on board again

Legroom is acceptable here with the dark blue clean so far leather seats

Another well loaded cabin today.
Very close to 100% with also a good number of biz pax around.
The check-in worked again well.
22 A/C, the last row window and aisle with the middle seat open in the end

Cabin crew is three female FA´s. One english senior, nice, one also english, middle aged woman, really nice and one middle aged north african, ok style.
The cabin ceiling

On the go

Service is also good here with a sandwich and free drinks

The FO is on the mike during approach in a nice style.
Touchdown at "Zero-Seven", 10.30 am, 15 minutes ahead to schedule, 20 degrees and high clouds only.
The personal pickup service worked well and soon thereafter we´re back at the homebase.
Conclusions anyone?:
Berjaya TOD-SIN: Short, special and relaxed.
British Airways SIN-LHR: Sleep well on the Jumbo.
British Airways LHR-STR: Calm and relaxed.
Well, it´s just a week to go now till a view for the french atlantic countryside. Or is it Spain or also the Basque country?. Maybe the guy´s know it better?:

And there is also this mysterious young woman on the plane. Where do I know you?.

Very interesting report about your Far East trip. Very nice to see you go from the small one to the giant Boeing. It seems BA is doing pretty well on the route, a 100% load for a B747 is not so common nowadays.
I am sure you enjoyed your SIN day, it seems a very clean city and an intersting place to visit.
Glad you had nice company in such a long trip.
Looking forward to reading about your Biarritz experience.

Thank you for leaving out the lizards & insects this time!
What a cute little airport TOD is. I love the simple flight schedule board and all the open spaces, palm trees and the like. The simple things are often the best? Super views after take off: special plane, a beautiful island, what a memorable trip.
As for Singapore, you put me to shame with all the things you did in 24 hours- the night safari, Chinatown & Little India. I’m not surprised you slept for the whole flight!
In England (Sorry, couldn’t resist that one!)
Quoting FLIEGER67 (Thread starter): A well built queue at the gate when we arrived.

Now why does this seem familiar?
A true veteran of the skies.
Was that all you got in the way of an amenity kit?
That A380 looks very stylish in the Malaysian livery.
What about the duty free shopping?!
Mmm, cheese & chutney. Have I ever told you I like cheese sandwiches?

Lucky you go those good seats on a full flight
Interesting FIDS. a) a long delay for the JFK. I guess a lot of pax would have been moved to a morning departure rather than wait til 1230?. b) they still use MLP rather than MXP for Malpensa. I think there is even space for them to write the full name. c) LUX is still in CAPS! |

Going back the BA way, sure a good decision and nice to compare the BA and QF service on the very same route. My preference goes with QF, more modern planes, better amenities. Only the legroom on the A380 could be an issue. Berjaya into TOD is a great experience, too bad I've only experienced it from the ground some years ago
I believe you. It really is a very nice and scenic landing I believe.
So they were all nocturnals I guess. Were they well visible then?
I've never seen that hotel from this perspective. It's really grand and that rooftop thing is massive.

The airport at Tioaman Island looks very small and quaint but also very relaxed.
I also really dislike clearing security at the gate in SIN. It seems to slow down the process.
Looking forward to your next report ! |
Thank you and that´s exactly my opinion with SIN, you know.

wonderful report series here, and sorry for replying so late. A great trip you have put together here, and interesting that you had three different 4-engine plane types, with the mighty A380, the classic 747 and finally the Dash-7, what a contrast. Must have been a cool experience to fly on Berjaya, the airport at Tioman looks really cute. And that FIDS there looks really impressive ...
Great pictures as well, again an interesting contrast with the tropical island and then the big city of Singapore.
Thanks a lot for sharing

Thank you so much for your excellent report! Out of total coincidence I read it just when I was about to book a KUL-SIN flight I need in April 2013. So I got the awesome idea of flying via TOD instead, as I'm still missing the Dash 7 in my log! So I checked out the airline's web site, but they only seem to sell point to point tickets. So I emailed them if they could sell me a SZB-TOD-SIN ticket but they answered that I'd have to book 2 separate tickets. So this is what I'll do now. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to stay a day in Tioman, even though the place looks incredibly beautiful and interesting.
So now I'll have to send them another email to ask if I'll run into trouble with the short ground time (I'd have to check-in for my onward flight somehow). It is the same aircraft continuing the flight, but apparently they aren't prepared for through passengers, and I definitely have too little time to walk out and check in again. So they would have to check me in for both segments before I even leave Kuala Lumpur. I hope I can word an email that they understand... kind of odd request, especially since a nonstop KUL-SIN flight would cost next to nothing on one of the LCCs.
And my second question to them would be, if they'll still use the Dash 7 in April 2013. Not sure if they know an answer to this question, but it would seem to me that this type's days are numbered?
Viele Grüße!

Thank you and really interesting to follow you´re idea to fly via Tioman into SIN.
The whole place is as small as it could be and you don´t even have to walk 5 meters from arrivals to departures.
Don´t worry, that seems possible also on the same plane.
There are no suitable planes around for TOD, so it seems they stay with the Dash-7.

I wonder what will happen to PKG when the Dash-7s get too old - Berjaya is already using ATRs to places like Redang so I guess Tioman is do-able but using one of those at Pangkor (700m runway IIRC) seems like a stretch. |

Thanx a lot for the feedback.
Good question with the future of the short runway airports and Berjaya.
I´ve also read about the ATR, but definitely Pangkor is not doable on the ATR.
So it seems they keep the -7 as long as possible.

Hard to imagine that Dash you flew probably once flew out of LCY just after that airport opened! I really enjoyed this part of your Asia travels.
Super pics of Tioman as well on departure. It looks like a great place for a holiday.
Thanks again and Happy 2013 to you!

Good to follow you´re comment. It feels like really special to know that plane around LCY day by day, years ago.
And sure Tioman is worth a visit.
Greetings and the very same to you with 2013,
