Intro
Flying on the elegant Boeing 787 Dream)Liner was high on my list since the first plane had entered commercial service. When LOT announced that it would send its first 787 to several European destinations - including Munich - before starting long-haul operations, I immediately checked flying times and fares. Here's the schedule:
http://d2trcpvq5mhv9e.cloudfront.net/pdf/dreamliner_en.pdf
Less than 12 hours later, I decided to book a MUC-WAW-MUC roundtrip for me and my wife who was also interested in trying this brand new bird. In order to reduce the risk of missing the desired plane due to a schedule change, I chose 787-operated flights both ways. This aspect was more important than my habit to avoid "flying the same reg twice".
The outbound flight would leave on December 14, the first day of commercial 787 operations, the inbound flight would take place one day later. After a seamless booking process on LOT's website, I was even able to reserve seats on both segments. Perfect!
Originally, I reserved seats in rows 26 and 28, but I was a bit concerned about the missing window in the 787's rear section. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to find reliable information about the exact location. So, in order to avoid a negative surprise, I switched to 10H and 10J on the MUC-WAW flight (no seats in rear section left) and to 29A and 29B on the WAW-MUC flight.

Munich (MUC) - Warsaw (WAW)
LOT Polish Airlines LO354
Scheduled times: 19:25-21:00
Actual times: 19:35-21:07
Flight duration: 01:11 (hrs)
Distance: 484 miles
Economy Class, seat 24J
Boeing 787-8
SP-LRA (s/n 061),
Delivered in 11/2012
1st flight on SP-LRA
1st 787 flight
147th airline
We arrived at MUC almost three hours before departure, so we first visited the nice Christmas market under the roof of the Munich Airport Center and enjoyed some mulled wine and punch...

During the check-in process on the day before, I had noticed that 24H and 24J were suddenly available and I happily gave up 10H and 10J. We received mobile boarding passes, but I also wanted to pick up printed ones. After entering our data into a check-in kiosk, the system suddenly showed 24G and 24H - aisle and middle seat. Apparently we had been reseated after checking in and the window seat was gone now - just like all other window seats with adjacent aisle seat.
So we went to a web check-in counter where a very friendly male Lufthansa agent welcomed us. After loading the seatmap, he asked: "Are you aware of the aircraft type you will fly on?" I replied with a smile: "Of course, it's the Dreamliner. The one and only reason why we booked this flight!" He smiled as well and said: "You belong to those few people who take notice!"
He told us that 24J was still available and kept wondering why we had been reseated. Then he moved us to 24H and 24J again and also asked about our seat preference for the return flight. He even showed us the map and said that most seats were still available. I ensured that we wanted to keep 29A and 29B as planned and he printed the boarding passes. "You can still pick up new boarding passes at Warsaw if you want to have LOT ones as well", he added and wished us a pleasant journey.
Then we passed security and immediately walked to G48, the southernmost gate at Terminal 2. And here it is, LOT's first Dreamliner, registered SP-LRA:

SP-LRA had made its first commercial flight in the morning, heading to Prague. After returning to Warsaw, it rested for a while and then flew to Munich where it arrived at 16:25. The event had created lots of attention among spotters and in the media considering that it was the first ever Boeing 787 visit to MUC.
We were very surprised to find out that a gate party was in full swing...

Delicious snacks and desserts were available...

...as well as a LOT 787 cake:

There was even a Bavarian brass music band:

Of course we happily joined the party and enjoyed some tasty snacks and high-quality sparkling wine:

LO354 was also operating under an ANA flight number:

Nice Dreamliner images on other gate screens:

Boarding commenced about 40 minutes before departure, Business Class and Premium Economy class passengers were invited to use a dedicated jetbridge at G47. All passengers received a nice certificate...

...and delicious white chocolate truffles:

The card's backside:

Very friendly flight attendants welcomed us at the aircraft door and in the aisles - it was obvious that they were as happy about this special flight as many passengers. I immediately liked the spacious feel and the lighting in the cabin which is equipped with 213 Economy Class seats:

Seat features include cupholder, coat hook and USB port:

We stored our stuff in the spacious bins and I started exploring the cabin before taking my seat. Numerous people kept taking pictures during boarding, with some of them using smartphones. I guess even some non-enthusiasts wanted to record this event. There was also a TV team moving through the cabin and interviewing people. Like most other 787 operators, LOT chose a 3-3-3 Economy Class configuration:

"Missing window mystery" solved - row 27 should be avoided:

Door 4R:

Spacious galley:

Now it was time to check the seating comfort. LOT offers plenty of legroom (at least 32 inches of pitch)...

...and all you can find under the seat is the footrest - I didn't see IFE boxes anywhere:

I like the seat's cushion, but the 16.9-inch width may pose a problem for many travellers. It's about the same width which can be found on 3-4-3-configured 777s. Did I feel more cramped on the 787? Honestly, I cannot answer that question without a doubt, but what I immediately noticed was a lack of shoulder space. I wouldn't want to spend 10 hours in a middle seat between two strangers.
The windows on the Boeing 787 are larger than on other airliners and equipped with dimmers rather than shades. Here's the control unit:

Dimming and un-dimming worked fine, but I still need to take a day flight on the Dreamliner for final judgement.
LOT chose high-quality handsets - but dark blue symbols on black buttons are hard to recognize:

The high-quality headphones (distributed after takeoff) are probably the best ones I have ever received in Economy Class:

Safety card:

Inflight magazine:

Fleet information page...

I couldn't find an obvious mistake, but I doubt that only two ATR 42-500s are left in the EuroLOT fleet. The remaining ATR 72-200s and LOT's remaining 737-500s aren't mentioned at all - some frames are still active according to ATDB. And there should be 8 Bombardier Q400s in the EuroLOT fleet. Maybe some Polish members know can clear that up?
The welcome screen...

...and maps were appearing on all screens alternately:

More details:

And even more details:

The purser made a welcome announcement which was a bit hard to understand due to the noise coming from the air conditioning system. She referred to the first day of the airline's Dreamliner operations and said: "We are very proud to be the first European airline to fly the Boeing 787, the most modern airliner in the world."
Shortly afterwards, the captain also made a short announcement and explained that a few passengers were still missing. He didn't refer to the aircraft type at this point of time. Only a few minutes later, doors were finally closed. The flight wasn't full, but LOT could enjoy a healthy load. Of course we were glad that the aisle seat in our row had remained empty.
Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to take a decent picture through the window. What a gorgeous wing design:

After the safety video...

...we were pushed back 10 minutes behind schedule. I had been curious about the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 start-up - and it proved to be rather loud and therefore very enjoyable!
When the plane started moving, the spool up sound reminded me of the puny sound on certain regional planes with tail-mounted engines. Luckily, there's still the solid basic engine noise which indicates at any time that the plane is not powered by washing drum engines!
Finally, after taxiing all the way down to runway 08R, the Trents started howling and moderately accelerated SP-LRA which lifted off gently and climbed out remarkably smoothly. What I also noticed was the relatively low cabin noise, the Dreamliner is definitely quieter than other widebody twins.
Shortly after takeoff, the on-demand IFE system was switched on. "Touch the screen or press a button" it said in Polish and English alternately:

However, my touch screen was not responding, so I had to use the handset. My wife's screen worked perfectly, though. Language selection:

First of all, I checked out my favorite IFE feature:

While I was exploring the IFE system, the captain made another announcement and welcomed all passengers on this "promotional flight" operated by the Boeing 787. He informed about the routing and wished a pleasant stay on board: "I hope it will be an extraordinary experience!"
Back to the IFE system. Main menu:

Information about today's LOT...

...and its history:

Survey...

...which consists of three questions about the Dreamliner. Interior? Stunning, I'd say...well, except for the 3-3-3 configuration:

Amazing!

Absolutely!

E-Reader:

Here you can switch to the program shown on the overhead screens:

The moving map images on the overhead screens seemed to alternate more often than in the "autoplay" mode which may be reason to choose that option.
While the IFE system offers a choice of more than 40 TV features and 120 music albums, I only found 11 different movies and 7 different games. That's a very limited choice and I hope that more options will be added before the start of long-haul operations.
The friendly flight attendants distributed tasty cheese sandwiches and chocolate wafer bars...

...with drinks following some minutes later. I decided to try a Polish beer:

Of course I had to check out the lavatories as well. I liked the modern interior and the fact that I didn't feel cramped. Btw - when you close the toilet lid, flushing starts automatically. The rose added a nice touch:

The forward Economy Class section:

Unfortunately, my first flight on the Dreamliner was slowly nearing its end:

The IFE system was switched off about 10 minutes before landing and this nice Dreamliner image was appearing on all PTVs:

At least I could still follow the flight path on the overhead screens. It's too bad that there aren't any camera views available on LOT's 787.
I couldn't see the wing in the darkness, but it was distinctively perceptible and audible whenever air brakes were deployed during descent. We touched down roughly - and in addition to thrust reversers, brakes were used heavily. No doubt, everybody on the plane must have realized that these new brakes are working very effectively!
During disembarking, I asked a flight attendant if I could take pictures in the other cabins and she kindly agreed. "Yes, of course!", she replied. There are 21 seats in the Premium Club cabin - those seats are 19.7 inches wide and can recline 132 degrees:

Let's have a look into the Business Class cabin:

The 18 lie-flat Elite Club seats are 21.2 inches wide and 74.8 inches long (190cm):

If you want to find out more about the different cabin products, just have a look at the Dreamliner section on the airline's website:
http://dreamliner.lot.com/#/EN/Open
Then I asked a captain standing near the main entry door if I could also take pictures on the flight deck and he just nodded. I had to wait in queue, because some other passengers were still making a visit there. "Next one!", another waiting German passenger shouted after a while and we could finally proceed. The pilot in command, a very friendly and cheerful man, was still sitting in the left seat:

"It's a beautiful plane!", I said and one of the three captains replied: "Oh yes, we also love it so much!" What a great office, would you agree?

Then the pilot in command asked me to take the right seat and he took a picture of me. Great! Before finally leaving the aircraft, I took a picture of the crew rest entry:

The Dreamliner's nose still needs to grow on me...

After leaving the terminal building, we went to the Courtyard Marriott Warsaw Airport, located just across the street. Nice lobby...

...and a nice Christmas tree:

I can only praise the friendly receptionist - and the comfortable room gave no cause for criticism either:

After enjoying a great breakfast at the hotel on the next morning, we took a bus to Warsaw's Old Town (Stare Miasto) where we wanted to visit the Christmas market. Out hotel's main entrance:

There wasn't too much traffic on that Saturday, so the ride took less than 40 minutes. Once we had left the bus, we had to walk very carefully due to freezing rain. We really liked this part of the city:

The Christmas market was still deserted, so we continued exploring the area:

Very nicely equipped café:

Back on the market:

Warsaw (WAW) - Munich (MUC)
LOT Polish Airlines LO353
Scheduled times: 16:10-17:50
Actual times: 16:08-17:54
Flight duration: 01:14 (hrs)
Distance: 484 miles
Economy Class, seat 29B
Boeing 787-8
SP-LRA (s/n 061),
Delivered in 11/2012
2nd flight on SP-LRA
2nd 787 flight
We returned to the airport about three hours before departure. This LOT Dreamliner ad is difficult to overlook:

Before going airside, we had lunch - unfortunately, there are only few restaurants at the airport and all of them are overpriced. Anyway, back to the Dreamliner. After another round trip to Prague in the morning, SP-LRA was waiting for its seventh revenue flight at gate 24. Taking decent pictures was nearly impossible through the building's slanted windows:

While we were hanging around near the gate, user Makeree suddenly showed up - I hadn't been aware that he had also booked that flight. We kept talking for a while before heading to the gate.
Boarding commenced 30 minutes before departure and friendly flight attendants welcomed us on board again. Makeree was standing in the galley between Business Class and Premium Economy Class and quickly told me that he had been upgraded - seat 1E instead of a narrow Economy Class seat. Lucky guy!
The seats in the last row recline normally, so I'd also choose that row on a long-haul flight:

Cabin lighting after boarding had been completed:

Maps on all screens again - this variant had only been available during descent on the other flight:

We left the gate two minutes ahead of schedule, but this time the plane had to be de-iced which took a while. I didn't notice anything different during takeoff, but the plane didn't climb out as smoothly as on the day before. Shortly after the seat belt signs had been switched off, user LXM83 who had selected seat 28J, came over and we kept talking about aviation for a while. During our nice conversation, we could also experience turbulence on the 787 for the first time. Seat belt signs were switched on again, but only for about five minutes.
Both the purser (after boarding) and the captain referred to the "promotional flights" again and service was almost identical, too. However, this time we got ham sandwiches instead of cheese sandwiches. One more cabin shot:

We touched down after a flying time of 1 hour and 14 minutes and arrived at the gate four minutes behind schedule. A great short trip had come to its end - I'm really glad that there hadn't been any technical or weather-related problems.

Flying on the Dream)Liner was a great experience. I love its cabin design (dynamic lighting, bins), the large windows and most of its sounds - not to forget about its gorgeous wings, of course. The 787 belongs to my favorite aircraft types, but I definitely don't like the 3-3-3 configuration. I wouldn't want to spend 10 hours in such a cabin's middle seat.
LOT chose good seats (they're just too narrow) and offers plenty of legroom in Economy Class. The IFE system is nice, but movie and game options should be expanded. I wouldn't hesitate to take LOT's 787 on a long-haul trip, most preferably in Business Class or Premium Economy Class, though.
I can only praise LOT for the decision to operate promotional flights to European destinations - that tour means joy not just for enthusiasts and it will continue to create lots of attention. Crews were very friendly and let passengers take pictures everywhere. The gate party at MUC, the certificate and the little gift were the icing on the cake.
Last but not least - this is the 100th PlaneHunter report on Airliners.net, as mentioned in the title. At this point I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all loyal readers and repliers. I have always enjoyed sharing my reports and I have enjoyed many subsequent discussions about cabin products, service, liveries and much more. I will try hard to keep up my work and I'm looking forward to your future comments.
Best Regards,

As expected your report is up fast Nice overview of the product and great to see LOT upping their game. They have been in limbo for many years now in terms of product on L/H . I like the look of the PE product very much and pricing seems to be ok too.
J Class similar in style to others so nothing amazing there. I like the way LOT provided something special at the gate which is often missing these days for first flights etc...
Thanks for the report.

Hi Philip, thanks for your fast reply!

Yes, the product on the 763s is totally outdated. It will be interesting to see the airline's future development with the 787.

I agree, yes.

True. I hadn't expected all that.

Thanks a lot for this interesting report on the first day of operations of the Dreamliner with LO.
I think LO did a good job with all the fanfare at MUC: music, food and drinks included... really nice.
The plane looks super, although the design and color scheme of the C class seats does not look really fancy, it may be the only criticism I can have for such a gorgeous plane, like the 3-3 seating and the generous seat-pitch they offer, let's see how long it lasts; I am sure we would soon find some airlines fitting 4 seats in the middle section.
Needless to say all the pictures are really crisp and are a great asset to your reports.
The IFE looks really wonderful, but as you said the blue symbols are hard to see in a black button.

I was on the WAW-MUC leg of the Dreamliner tour just before your flight. I agree with you about the narrow seats, overall the economy cabin was very spacious and the legroom was excellent but if the flight had been full or much longer it may have become a little uncomfortable.
Nice to see LOT continuing their celebrations on launching 787 flights, it's a great aircraft and the service was excellent so I wish them the best of luck for the future!
Thanks for the report.

Hi Kevin, thanks for your reply!
Quoting shamrock350 (Reply 9): I was on the WAW-MUC leg of the Dreamliner tour just before your flight. |
Nice! Was there any kind of celebration at WAW?

Exactly, the cabin is spacious and legroom is great - it's just the narrow seats which I don't like.

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): Originally, I reserved seats in rows 26 and 28, but I was a bit concerned about the missing window in the 787's rear section. Unfortunately, it wasn't possible to find reliable information about the exact location. |
So, whats the verdict- which seat is to be avoided? |

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I like the seat's cushion, but the 16.9-inch width may pose a problem for many travellers. It's about the same width which can be found on 3-4-3-configured 777s. Did I feel more cramped on the 787? Honestly, I cannot answer that question without a doubt, but what I immediately noticed was a lack of shoulder space |
I COMPLETELY agree...the thing that bothers me the most is that I DESPISE the 17" seats on the CRJ-200...BUT a CRJ-200 flight is going to be short.... Going HOURS AND HOURS in a 17" seat for a long haul flight is really almost inhumane!
Maybe you should tell a few fibs....HA HA HA (sorry couldn't resist!)
I actually like the nose of the 787 but I know I am in the minority in that area....
Thanks for all the awesome trip reports! |

Row 27 is the one with the missing windows, as I mentioned later in the report.

Thanks for another amazing report with amazing pictures ! Very good to see you fly on the 787 the same day I did!
Very good idea to make sure you got on one in case of aircraft substitution.
My friend ended up in that seat unfortunately. He was not to happy but nothing to change to.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I immediately liked the spacious feel and the lighting in the cabin which is equipped with 213 Economy Class seats: |
The cabin is very spacious which is great but....
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I like the seat's cushion, but the 16.9-inch width may pose a problem for many travellers. It's about the same width which can be found on 3-4-3-configured 777s. Did I feel more cramped on the 787? Honestly, I cannot answer that question without a doubt, but what I immediately noticed was a lack of shoulder space. I wouldn't want to spend 10 hours in a middle seat between two strangers |
I haven't been on a 3-4-3 777 for while but I would say the 3-3-3 on a 787 is worse than 3-4-3 on a 777. The seat on LO looks very very similar to the seat on UA. I did not find the seat the comfortable due to the lumbar support. My back was simply too wide for the seat but I'm not that big. Just tiny seat. I have to agree with you that I would not want to fly long haul in such a seat.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): While the IFE system offers a choice of more than 40 TV features and 120 music albums, I only found 11 different movies and 7 different games. That's a very limited choice and I hope that more options will be added before the start of long-haul operations.
|
That's very bad; almost like Biman Bangladesh.....although LO has more TV programs and more music.
How was it ?
It's very ugly. I would actually go as far as say that the 787 is the ugliest aircraft in Boeing's 7 series of aircraft.
Even more troubling is that other recent new aircraft are also very ugly like the 380 and the 350 looks very ugly as well from that I have seen from the roll out.
Very very nice of LO to really make such a special event for the passengers both on the ground and in the air.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2): Last but not least - this is the 100th PlaneHunter report on Airliners.net, as mentioned in the title. Another great one! This time with the 787 . Loved every word of it. Still waiting on my first 787 flight (and A380 flight as well ) whenever those will be, But since im limited to a student budget (ie funding from parents ) Im not able to travel as much as I would like to. Reports like these pretty much give an idea what different aircraft and airlines are like. The interior of LOT's 787s looks pretty good, too bad you didnt like the 3-3-3 seating, its looks ok to me, but what do I know... Never been on a 3-4-3 777 config either so im not sure how bad it really is, I guess ill determine that for myself sooner of later. Thanks for sharing your report, I enjoyed reading it
Btw ive got my next flights in a couple days so my report will be coming soon |

Good to see a LOT 787 report up so soon
I've also booked a LOT 787 flight, but long-haul (in Y), in March. Well, I'm small... hopefully the seats will be decent enough on my 9-hr flight to WAW. And, yes, it's row 27 that's without a window. LOT's promotional website can lead you in the right direction there; I got seats in row 24. Most of the window seats were already taken (or at least blocked)... almost 4 months in advance!
Anyway, great TR. Nice to see LO throwing a party for the 787, so to speak.
Don't like the 3-3-3 config myself. I'd rather it was 2-5-2 if it had to be 9-across.
And, 100 reports! Congratulations and thanks for all your hard work! |

You've really beaten yourself this time, such a quick writeup after the flight. The quality of your TR hasn't suffered from the fast writing Thanks for this 1st real life view into the LOT B787. The overall cabin feel is very much to my liking: modern and good use of colours with some accents here and there. I particularly like the biz seats with the red and blue although I can imagine they are not to everyone's liking. It's good to see that LOT did an effort in promoting this event with 'beer und wurst' at the gate
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I decided to book a MUC-WAW-MUC roundtrip for me and my wife who was also interested in trying this brand new bird. |
Ha ha, good to read that your other half is interested in this too. but I guess to a certain extent only
On some very special occasions, one has to let get go of their habits. Well, maybe flying another type wouldn't have been so bad either? But at least the B787 in one direction!
Wow, that looks really nice!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): Of course we happily joined the party and enjoyed some tasty snacks and high-quality sparkling wine: |
So no 'beer und wurst' (sorry, I keep repeating myself...)
These indeed look very solid. It's not an everyday thing that you get these headphones for such a short flight. The LOT folks probably wanted to give you the whole experience to try out.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I had been curious about the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 start-up - and it proved to be rather loud and therefore very enjoyable! |
I doubt that you ever fly with earplugs
I agree! I especially like the type indication on the instrument panel above.
I prefer the 2-4-2 arrangement as well. Less hassle to reach the aisle when seated at the window.

Sure, would have been nice to get a LOT 737 or E175 on one sector, but it was a good decision to book the 787 both ways. Just yesterday there were some technical issues and the Dreamliner was replaced by a 734 on a WAW-MUC-WAW round trip. Such things can always happen.

I won't repeat what others have written so that you don't have to cover the same ground, but I am pleased to see two things. Footrests are available to those who wish to use them. Congratulations PH, a special way to celebrate no. 100 with the Dream)Liner experience! Wow, you must've been so busy during the flight, you pictured it all very well and in good quality as I'm used from your hand.
Such a shame that AMS was not included in the list with 787 flights, and I couldn't find the time to work a schedule around the LOT 787 flights in Europe. I guess I'll have to wait till 2013 to get on my first one
Yeah, the Courtyard Marriott in WAW is nice, but I found the room temperature a bit high and difficult to control during my last visit in previous winter. The breakfast is really good though. Judging from the pics, a city visit is worth it and should be done next time also by me...

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): "Are you aware of the aircraft type you will fly on?" I replied with a smile: "Of course, it's the Dreamliner. The one and only reason why we booked this flight!" He smiled as well and said: "You belong to those few people who take notice!" |
Indeed, we are among the few people who would be crazy enough to choose a flight based on the aircraft operating it!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): but the 16.9-inch width may pose a problem for many travellers. |
I would have to agree. I wouldn't want to be stuck in a narrow seat for that long. If only more airlines would follow NH and JL's lead and configure their 787s with an 8-across configuration only.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I had been curious about the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 start-up - and it proved to be rather loud and therefore very enjoyable! |
I'm glad to hear that. What's the noise level like during cruise? I hope it's not too quiet.
I'm somewhat bemused that the only options in the survey are superlatives. It won't let you record a negative answer. Not that I would put down a negative answer if I did the survey, but at least they should give the appearance of even-handedness! |

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 29): Indeed, we are among the few people who would be crazy enough to choose a flight based on the aircraft operating it!
|
No doubt about that.
Quoting CXB77L (Reply 29): If only more airlines would follow NH and JL's lead and configure their 787s with an 8-across configuration only.

Quoting CXB77L (Reply 29): What's the noise level like during cruise? I hope it's not too quiet. |
No, it's not too quiet, no worries.
Quoting CXB77L (Reply 29): I'm somewhat bemused that the only options in the survey are superlatives. |
Yes, good point. LOT is very enthusiastic about the plane - that survey is just one example.

Nice read and pictures, congrats on joining the '787 flown' gang Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): After a seamless booking process on LOT's website, I was even able to reserve seats on both segments. Perfect! |
- Nice touch by LOT that you can pre-reserve your seats without some level of status in a FF club.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): During the check-in process on the day before, I had noticed that 24H and 24J were suddenly available and I happily gave up 10H and 10J. |
- Odd you got re-seated, seemingly without need.
- I'd be questioning this too.
- Nice touch by LOT.
- Odd it was not in Polish & German?
- Not a nice config, will make me avoid this where possible, NH have the lovely 2-4-2 config.
- Agreed, not pretty, same goes for the A380 & A350.
Congratulations on this being your 100th TR, keep them coming, we do appreciate your input.
Cheers

Hi Mark, many thanks for your comments! It was about time to get on the Dreamliner.
Quoting ba319-131 (Reply 31): Nice touch by LOT that you can pre-reserve your seats without some level of status in a FF club. |
I guess they made an exception for these 787 flights.
Yes, very odd. The window seat was still available, but the seat map at the kiosk suggested the opposite.
I found out today that there was an official celebration with MUC's CEO and LOT's CEO after the Dreamliner's arrival. They had left already when we arrived at the gate.
Yes, would have been nice to have it in German, too.

Thank you, Mark! It's the users' replies which make the work worthwhile.

Congratulations on your 100th report and on your first 787 flights!
Your very well written report sums up the 787 experience nicely. Well done!
And it was very nice chatting to you during the flight for a couple of minutes. I wish the flight would have been longer.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I can only praise LOT for the decision to operate promotional flights to European destinations - that tour means joy not just for enthusiasts and it will continue to create lots of attention. |
I completely agree on that one. It's a pity that LH - for example - didn't sell their (very few) European demo flights on the 747-8, such as the recent FRA-DUS and DUS-HAM flights.
Best regards, LXM83 |

I knew it would not be long before you "hunted" down a trip on the 787!! You are after all Plane Hunter!!! What a great report!! Glad Mrs. PH could accompany you on this your inaugural flight on a new aircraft. Always nice to have someone special at the side of you at such occasions!!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): The outbound flight would leave on December 14, the first day of commercial 787
operations, the inbound flight would take place one day later. |
This has got to be the only report put out so quickly by you!!
Is the position of that window the same on all 787s?
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): After loading the seatmap, he asked: "Are you aware of the aircraft type you will fly on?" I replied with a smile: "Of course, it's the Dreamliner. The one and only reason why we booked this flight!" He smiled as well and said: "You belong to those few people who take notice!" |
Nice to know of a ground staff who was equally excited. Sometimes you get staff who can't really tell what aircraft type it is
I really do like the new LOT image. And Toronto will be seeing the LOT 787s with the summer schedules...that makes two 787 operators to YYZ, the other being Ethiopian, which I have yet to see....blame the cold weather for keeping me away
Would be nice to view that image at home on my TV screen!!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): It's about the same width which can be found on 3-4-3-configured 777s. Did I feel more cramped on the 787? Honestly, I cannot answer that question without a doubt, but what I immediately noticed was a lack of shoulder space. I wouldn't want to spend 10 hours in a middle seat between two strangers. |
Is the width of both the 787 and 777 the same? Then having a 3-4-3 configuration would make it very tight. The galleys do appear as spacious as on the 77Ws
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): Dimming and un-dimming worked fine, but I still need to take a day flight on the Dreamliner for final judgement. |
I really did want to see that demonstrated here, but there have been other reports on by others. The FAs did not in anyway darken them completely (though I see no need for it on a night flight)
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): LOT chose high-quality handsets - but dark blue symbols on black buttons are hard to recognize: |
However in a darkened cabin maybe the blue gets more highlighted and easier to see?
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): The high-quality headphones (distributed after takeoff) are probably the best ones I have ever received in Economy Class: |
Etihad's are the nices ones so far!!
Ha,ha, when it comes to these I wouldn't even challenge you to a match!!
They seem to have the same IFE feature as Etihad and Air Canada.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): The pilot in command, a very friendly and cheerful man, was still sitting in the left seat: |
Just look at the top section of the 787, wow it is so impressive if not so futuristic....
It looks just like a Racoon and someday if Porter Airlines ever order them, it would be a great fit....
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2): Last but not least - this is the 100th PlaneHunter report on Airliners.net, as mentioned in the title. |
Congratulations PH, wow your 100th report. Keep them coming.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2): At this point I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all loyal readers and repliers. I have always enjoyed sharing my reports and I have enjoyed many subsequent discussions about cabin products, service, liveries and much more. I will try hard to keep up my work and I'm looking forward to your future comments. |

I read someplace that LO purposely capped the european loads at 170 in the event the aircraft went tech, they could easily send in a 737 to get pax.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Reply 2): but I definitely don't like the 3-3-3 configuration. I wouldn't want to spend 10 hours in such a cabin's middle seat. |
Even though it is hard to judge from the pictures, I can see the middle seat being the issue on long haul flights. However, how different is it from 777 or 747 middle seat?

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 34): Glad Mrs. PH could accompany you on this your inaugural flight on a new aircraft. Always nice to have someone special at the side of you at such occasions!! |
Oh yes, and she really enjoyed it. She likes trips on quality carriers with nice cabins, but she dislikes LCC flights.
I posted the report less than 24 hours after returning home, definitely a personal record. Last time I worked very quickly was in July 2010 after the A380 sightseeing flight - but it took me a few days.
Totally Thrilling: Scenic Flight On Lufthansa A380 (by PlaneHunter Aug 5 2010 in Trip Reports)
The position on the fuselage is the same, but due to different cabin configurations it's essential to check with each carrier individually. According to Seatguru, the missing window is located at row 52 (fourth last row) on JAL's 787 and at row 28 (second last row) on LAN's 787s, for example.
Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 34): Nice to know of a ground staff who was equally excited. Sometimes you get staff who can't really tell what aircraft type it is |

Quoting flightsimboy (Reply 34): ..Which of your reports would you consider to be the most interesting of them all....I think your report on 9/11 might be that one, is it? |
That 9/11 report certainly belongs to the most interesting ones from my point of view. Another one is the LH A380 report as mentioned ealier.
Quoting WROORD (Reply 35): Glad to see you feeling well after your last trip! |
Hi WROORD, thanks for your reply! Yes, I haven't had similar problems again.
Quoting WROORD (Reply 35): I'd say the certificate and chocolates are a very nice touch to the whole experience. |
Absolutely!
Quoting WROORD (Reply 35): I read someplace that LO purposely capped the european loads at 170 in the event the aircraft went tech, they could easily send in a 737 to get pax. |
I hadn't read that, but I had been assuming LOT would do it this way. And on Sunday, just one day after I had returned, LOT had to replace the 787 by a 737-400 on a WAW-MUC-WAW round trip due to technical issues.
Quoting WROORD (Reply 35): However, how different is it from 777 or 747 middle seat? | LO's 787 seat is 16.9 inches wide, the narrowest 777 seats are 17 inches wide. 747 seats are usually 17.5 inches wide, but there are also narrower ones. Armrests also play a role.
Quoting WROORD (Reply 35): Congrats on your 100th report! I have yet to write my first one..... |

Good decision, row 27 should be avoided. I also expected strangers in our rows after checking the seatmaps, but we had the whole row to ourselves in both cases in the end. It's very likely that LOT doesn't sell all seats so that it can replace the Dreamliner by a 737 if there are any problems. That happened on Sunday, WAW-MUC-WAW was operated by a 734. I certainly wish you luck, though!

With regards to some of your questions - LO does not include in Kaleidoscope all of K2's planes. Just those that operate for LO - 7 Q400s and 2 ATR42.
The B735 were supposed to be retired this month - that's why they are missing.
The IFE does not include all of the features (I guess mostly movies) in order to avoid licensing fees for the time the plane operates one hour hops around Europe.

First of all, many thanks for taking the time to put together this and all of your other 99 reports, they are very much appreciated.
And thank you very much for this excellent report on LOT and their 787. It's also nice to see there was much fanfare done to commemorate the special occasion. LOT seems to have a nice short haul product as well, the sandwich looks like a step up vs what you get on LH. Very nice pics from Warsaw as well.
The interiors look quite nice, although, what more can be said about the now infamous 3-3-3 configuration in coach. I like it better when manufacturers are practical and make their fuselages just comfortable enough for standard seats, like the 767, A330/40 or A380. The fuselage width on the 767 and A330/40 is such that only the most daring of airlines will squeeze in one more seat per row. On the other hand, when airlines plan for "extra wide seats" such as the 777 and now the 787, this extra fuselage width invariably ends up being used to squeeze in more passengers instead. That said, the bins definitely look like they will make things easier when boarding.
Let's wait and see what people who fly these birds for 11-12 hours on a full flight have to say...
Thanks again and congratulations on your milestone !
Cheers

Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): When LOT announced that it would send its first 787 to several European destinations - including Munich - before starting long-haul operations, I immediately checked flying times and fares. |
I was going to do the LHR one yesterday...just as well I didn't!
Great to see a cup holder; not nearly enough airlines include these
Nice to see some artwork on a safety card
Ha, what a choice! I'm sure the PR departuement will have a field day with the resonses.....positive, very positive, or extremely positive. No chance to select "dissapointing" then? |

congrats once again for your 100th report here, a truly great achievement. Not only 100 reports, but also 100 high quality and truly enjoyable reports ...
Great that you got a chance to fly on the 787, it is certainly a wonderful airplane. Looking forward to my first flight with this type, although it might not be that comfortable doing a low-cost longhaul with Norwegian.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): So we went to a web check-in counter where a very friendly male Lufthansa agent welcomed us. After loading the seatmap, he asked: "Are you aware of the aircraft type you will fly on?" I replied with a smile: "Of course, it's the Dreamliner. The one and only reason why we booked this flight!" He smiled as well and said: "You belong to those few people who take notice!" |
Well done by that agent. I guess indeed most passengers weren't aware of the special nature of this flight, so nice of him to mention it. Also nice that he managed to get you the seats you wanted.
That's indeed a nice surprise. Nice snacks here, only that cake looked a bit artificial with the blue color. But still great that they made such a party during boarding. And even distributed more goodies later, that certificate was a good idea, a wonderful souvenir for that flight.
That was supposed to be joke? Interesting choices anyway ...
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): The friendly flight attendants distributed tasty cheese sandwiches and chocolate wafer bars... |
That's exactly the same thing I got on my flight with LOT to FRA recently.
Yes... ...
Also thank you for the pictures of Warsaw, a nice reminder of my recent visit to this interesting city.

I couldn't think of a better way to celebrate your 100th report than one on LOTs 787 first day of ops!
Another amazing report with many great pictures, you covered the 787 very well I flew the UA 787 myself back in November and wasn't all too impressed by it, nevertheless it still is a great aircraft!
Love the celebrations at the gate in MUC, that is exactly the way it should be done! Well done MUC and LOT.
Nice pictures of Warsaw too, really enjoyed them.

What a great story! Congratulations to your first Dreamliner flight and 100th report! Impressive I have to say...
Nice of LO with all the celebration at the gate at MUC. Service on board is good too. I like LO. And you know what to get, their service on board seem to have been the same for years
That Christmas market at MUC looks really nice. I love this kind of markets and how nice to have one at an airport. I would visit it if I pass through MUC during Christmas time!
Like the pictures from the old town in Warsaw. Very beautiful and the "newer parts of the city is very interesting too. Not that beautiful but interesting with all the history from the Soviet era
What did you think about WAW? I can´t say I like it. The new part looks indeed modern but very grey and sterile. The old part is just so dark and ugly haha! I agree with you with the lack of restuarants, both me and friend had troubles finding a nice place for lunch before our flight
The Marriott looks super nice just like in other reports here. Really tempted to try it one day! Rates seems to be really good too!
Thanks again for the great story PH. Great pictures too. The Dreamliner looks really nice and modern. Really looking forward the day I can fly the 787 for the first time!

very nice to see this TR online. It sure is very nice to see that you had the chance of flying with the 787. I still have to fly many aircrafts I have not flown with yet.

How nice to get to experience such a unique inaugural! The 787 sure looks great. It's highly unlikely I'll get to fly it anytime soon so it's great to read about what other people thought of it.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): In order to reduce the risk of missing the desired plane due to a schedule change, I chose 787-operated flights both ways. This aspect was more important than my habit to avoid "flying the same reg twice". |
Good thinking!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): He told us that 24J was still available and kept wondering why we had been reseated. |
That's really nice. I love LH employees. I wish I was treated like that every time I inquire about changing seats (or about correcting an unwanted reseating).
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): ...which consists of three questions about the Dreamliner. Interior? Stunning, I'd say...well, except for the 3-3-3 configuration: |

Thank you so much for sharing the Dreamliner experience with us!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): "We are very proud to be the first European airline to fly the Boeing 787, the most modern airliner in the world.” |
It has been such a great, but short-lived happiness. So sad to see the dream of Dreamliners have to come to a temporary end.
I do hope that the problems will get resolved very soon.
Anyway, here are some comments:
How exciting!
How lovely!
A glitch in system. Luckily, you found out just in time!
Sweet! What a pity that most people took the ride with Dreamliner for granted.
Awesome! Who needed a lounge at that moment?
Celebrate good time, come on!
There’s still a LOT for you.
How cute.
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): with some of them using smartphones. I guess even some non-enthusiasts wanted to record this event. |
Smartphones are just great invention!
Did you get interviewed as well?
Beautiful interior! Very neat upholstery, I like it!
Look how seat design has been evolving!
It was rather tight then with 3-3-3, I assume? Is there any airline installing 2-4-2 in Economy?
Perfect! Today hits and dance music!
Way to go! So many countries, so many customs.
Absolutely! It reminds me of LH First Class cabin.
Cool!
Quoting PlaneHunter (Thread starter): I asked a flight attendant if I could take pictures in the other cabins and she kindly agreed. "Yes, of course!", she replied. |
That’s the true dream spirit!
Simplicity at its best!
I shiver at the idea when I have to ride my bicycle to the office.
Gorgeous!
Thanks again. I am so glad to experience the Dreamliner through your eyes. The eyes of PlaneHunter!
Best wishes,
Suryo |

Hi LO231, good to hear you got both frames!
Quoting LO231 (Reply 71): On arrival in BRU greeted with champagne, prawn snacks and a scale model of LO787! |
Very nice. Did LOT organize that - or the airport?
Quoting LO231 (Reply 72): Hello Planehunter,as promised the link to my little movie of the 787 flight Brussels-Warsaw-Brussels 5/10-01-2013 |
Thanks a LOT for the link! Very enjoyable stuff, well done!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): Thank you so much for sharing the Dreamliner experience with us! |
Hi Suryo, thanks so much for your reply! Good to hear from you.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): It has been such a great, but short-lived happiness. So sad to see the dream of Dreamliners have to come to a temporary end. |
Yes, very very sad.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): I do hope that the problems will get resolved very soon. |
That's what I'm hoping, too. But things don't look good at the moment.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): A glitch in system. Luckily, you found out just in time!
|
Yes, fortunately!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): Awesome! Who needed a lounge at that moment?
|
So true!

No, but I wouldn't have declined anyway.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): It was rather tight then with 3-3-3, I assume? Is there any airline installing 2-4-2 in Economy?
|
Yes, 3-3-3 is right. Only ANA (int'l routes) and JAL have 2-4-2. And I guess there won't be many to follow.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): Absolutely! It reminds me of LH First Class cabin. |
That's what came into my mind immediately!
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): I shiver at the idea when I have to ride my bicycle to the office. |
Yes, riding a bicycle is very dangerous under such conditions.
Quoting akhmad (Reply 73): Thanks again. I am so glad to experience the Dreamliner through your eyes. The eyes of PlaneHunter! |
I'm glad to hear that, thank you very much!
Hi BrusselsSouth, thanks for your comments!
Quoting BrusselsSouth (Reply 74): I considered taking one of the LO promotional flights on the 787 but couldn't make it work due to a busy personal/work schedule. |
That's too bad.
Quoting BrusselsSouth (Reply 74): But, who needs to get on the actual flight when you have excellent reports like yours? |
Very nice, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the report.
Quoting BrusselsSouth (Reply 74):
I take the opportunity to thank you for this report and the 99 others. They are of outstanding quality and I have always enjoyed reading them and looking at your beautiful pictures. I lack time (and am too lazy...) to comment as I'd like but this appreciation applies to all 100 reports. |
Many thanks, this is really appreciated!
Good to hear! Line number 101 has been delivered, number 102 is under construction.

I believe it was LO, as they were the ones guiding the guests to visit the plane in small groups.( I didn't take one as I just got off that plane, hehe. I think swissport had something to do with it for the party's catering.
I have met CEO of BRU Airport, they're not useless either, for that party, departure back to WAW was delayed by an hour, and apparently the pax were informed beforehand, that explained rather empty boarding area while I deplaned.. |

Okay, thanks. I'm just wondering why such events didn't take place at all airports served by the Dreamliner.

Brussels Airlines? I'd also prefer an A319 over the Avro. But it cannot match the Dreamliner, of course...
