| Topic: Lufthansa/Lounges & New FRA Pier A+: AMS-CDG-AMS Username: adamspotter Posted 2012-12-19 11:24:01 and read 11356 times. During my recent mission to catch the LAN A340: Catching The LAN A340: FRA-MAD-FRA-AMS (by adamspotter Oct 23 2012 in Trip Reports) I still had a one-way AMS-FRA fixed for the 20th of October, so I started looking for flights from FRA. I decided to look for fares to CDG first, as I hadn’t been there in a while. I immediately found a dirt cheap FRA-CDG-FRA-AMS fare on LH and booked it, spending the night at CDG. With this trip booked all I needed now was to look for an hotel. After a bit of searching I settled with the IBIS CDG Airport. The map for this weekend trip, thanks to the Great Circle Mapper: ![]() Like always this report will start in the west side of Amsterdam where I take a 5-10 minute train ride down to the airport. With the first flight of the weekend not leaving until 13:30 I finally got the opportunity to sleep in after a busy week at work. The alarm clock went off at 11:00 and after getting my usual morning rituals done I was all ready to go at 11:50. A 10 minute walk followed to Amsterdam Lelylaan train station where I took the 12:07 train to the airport. After a bit of walking around the airport I arrived at my designated check-in area at 12:30. I had checked in online the night before and all I needed to do know was print my BPs. I approached one of the many LH SSKs, swapped my FFC and the machine successfully spit out my 2 BPs for the day. Next stop was security, which was a breeze and I was through within 5 minutes without any problems. With about half an hour to go before boarding time (13:00) I decided to walk around and see if there was any “special” traffic outside. Not much to see today at this hour except for this KLM EMB wearing its beautiful SkyTeam livery: ![]() Once arriving at my assigned gate (B31), the aircraft was already there. D-AILR will be doing the honors on this leg. A 15 year old A319 delivered to Lufthansa on 19/09/1997: ![]() For the remainder of the time, I took a seat and waited for boarding to begin. BP for this flight: ![]() Boarding began 15 minutes late, at 13:15. The usual scrum to the gate followed so I decided to sit back and wait for the crowd to go through. When there was barely anybody left in line I decided to join it. The gate agent scanned my BP with a smile and wished me a pleasant flight. After thanking her I headed into the jetway. 20/10/2012 AMS-FRA LH991 // 22A A319-114 Lufthansa // D-AILR 13:32-14:36 I entered the aircraft as one of the last passengers where I was greeted by a female FA in a friendly manner. Flight crew was all female except for the FO. Can’t say much about the 3 FAs as this was a short flight but they got their jobs done with lots of smiles. I proceeded towards the back of the plane and to my assigned seat 22A. Flight load was full at 100%, but I luckily enough had no trouble finding a spot for my carry-on in the overhead bins. While getting settled in the “boarding completed” was announced and the doors were closed at 13:30. The Purser then came on the PA with the usual announcements followed by the female captain welcoming us on board and wishing us a pleasant flight. Announced flying time was a short 45 minutes. While the safety demonstration was being performed we started pushback 2 minutes behind schedule: ![]() A short taxi followed to runway 24, also known as the Kaagbaan: ![]() ![]() ![]() After just a 2 minute taxi we rolled onto runway 24 and started take-off roll immediately: ![]() ![]() Rotate!: ![]() ![]() ![]() Through the clouds: ![]() ![]() ![]() Once the seatbelt sign got switched off the crew quickly began their service. Snack on this flight consisted of the brown bread with a big slice of cheese in between, together with that I got a coke: ![]() Legroom shot: ![]() In no time the FO came on the PA announcing our descent towards FRA, giving a weather update and thanking us for choosing Lufthansa: ![]() While the cabin was still being prepared for landing, we were on final approach for runway 25R: ![]() ![]() Landing on FRAs newest runway means you get a nice view of the terminals: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And touchdown at 14:25, 15 minutes ahead of schedule: ![]() We exited 25R and taxied back towards the terminal: ![]() A bunch of stored LH 747s: ![]() 1 of 10 whalejets Lufthansa has nowadays: ![]() ![]() THAI as always dedicated to Win1290: ![]() And in our final parking position at 14:36, still 4 minutes ahead of schedule: ![]() Now this was something new for me. For a second I thought we were headed to a gate, but instead we parked at an international gate and were bused to the terminal. I’m guessing this is to shorten connection times for passengers? Once the seatbelt sign was switched off I grabbed my belongings and bid the crew farewell while walking down the rear stairs. A 5 minute bus ride followed and I was inside terminal 1 in no time. About a week prior to this trip I got an email from Lufthansa stating that Frankfurt had just opened their brand new Pier A plus. So before heading to the LH Business Lounge I decided to head over to the pier and give it a look as I had more than enough time. FRAs Pier A+ started operations on the 10th of October and will only be used by Lufthansa or one of its *A partners. It has 185,400 sqm (800 m long) of useable floor space and provides 7 gates, 4 of those are designed for the A380. With this new pier now open it will allow an additional capacity of up to 6 million passengers per year: ![]() ![]() Kids corner: ![]() ![]() ![]() 1 of the 7 gates: ![]() A UA 777 being towed to its gate still wearing its old tulip livery: ![]() Lots of seating availabilities here: ![]() ![]() You can also get up close and personal with the different heavies docked at their gates: ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you!: ![]() Not many shops/restaurants are open yet: ![]() ![]() ![]() A380 heaven: ![]() ![]() ![]() | ||||||||||||||||||||||

BP for this flight: ![]() Boarding started 15 minutes behind schedule, at 21:15. The usual scrum to the gate followed so I remained seated until most people had boarded. After that I scanned my BP by using one of the self service machines and headed into the jetway. While walking in the jetway I caught a glimpse of the registration for this flight to CDG. D-AIZM will be doing the honors on this leg, delivered factory fresh to Lufthansa on 20/07/2012. At the time I took this trip it was exactly just 3 months old! 20/10/2012 FRA-CDG LH1052 // 29A A320-200 Lufthansa // D-AIZM 21:30-22:43 At the door I was greeted by 2 female FAs in a friendly manner and headed to the back of the plane towards my assigned seat 29A. First impression of the cabin was (obviously) clean, brand new and fresh. At the back of the plane was another female and male FA who also greeted me in a friendly manner. The crew on this flight can best be described as friendly and efficient, getting their job done with lots of smiles. After getting settled in I took a quick look outside: ![]() The perfectly acceptable legroom: ![]() The doors were closed 8 minutes ahead of schedule at 21:22, quite a light load on this flight at only 40% with all 3 seats to myself. The female purser then came on the PA with the usual announcements, followed by the flight deck with another welcome and some flight details. Announced flying time will be 50 minutes. The pilot also stated that there will be no update during flight due to the short duration of the flight, I don’t buy that as AMS-FRA is even shorter then FRA-CDG and I always get an update on that flight.. Pushback commenced bang on time at 21:30 while the safety demonstration was being performed: ![]() We taxied to runway 7C, and after waiting for a couple of other aircraft, we rolled onto the runway and took off into the dark sky at 21:44. Safety card: ![]() ![]() Worldshop Catalogue: ![]() And the magazin: ![]() Once the seatbelt sign got switched off the crew sprang into action offering the snack service. The snack was the same as my earlier flight, bread with a thick slice of cheese in between. Together with that I got a coke: ![]() In no time we started our descent towards foggy Paris. After a couple of turns we were on final approach to runway 9L and touched down at 22:36, 9 minutes ahead of schedule. We exited the runway and taxied to our gate at T1. In our final parking position at 22:43, 2 minutes ahead of schedule: ![]() I was one of the last ones off the plane thanking the crew on my way out. A long walk followed to the exit using many different moving walkways: ![]() ![]() ![]() As already mentioned in the introduction I had booked a room at the Ibis hotel located at the airport near T3. That meant taking the CDGVAL airport shuttle from T1 to T3: ![]() ![]() Had the whole cabin to myself while the back one was filled up: ![]() Once reaching the T3 stop a 5 minute walk followed to the hotel. After being checked in by the friendly receptionist I headed upstairs to my room: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After making use of the provided WIFI and booking some Alitalia mistake fares on their Japanese website I fell asleep… The alarm clock went off at 08:00 the next morning and after slowly getting out of bed I took a quick look outside. The fog was still there from last night: ![]() After taking a quick shower to wake me up, I gathered my belongings and headed back downstairs. Check out only took 2 minutes and the same ritual as last night followed. This time taking the CDGVAL back to T1. Once arriving, I walked over to the very busy LH check-in area: ![]() I had checked in online the night before in my hotel so just needed to print out both BPs. After a short wait I approached one of the many LH SSKs, swapped my FFC and the machine successfully spit out my 2 BPs for today. Once again the same ritual as last night followed. Taking the different moving walkways back to satellite # 6: ![]() ![]() Once arriving at satellite # 6 I headed straight through security which only took 5 minutes. With a little under 2 hours to go before boarding time, the next stop was the Lufthansa lounge. The lounge is located under the ground so that meant taking the elevator one floor down. There I was greeted by a friendly agent who scanned my BP, swapped my FFC and wished me a pleasant stay. The LH lounge here at CDG is nothing to write home about, I found the offerings to be quite poor. Nevertheless I kept myself entertained the next 2 hours while making use of the free provided WIFI. ![]() ![]() BP for this flight: ![]() When boarding was showing on the FIDS I decided to head back upstairs to my assigned gate 61. Once arriving there boarding hadn’t begun yet, this gave me a nice opportunity to check which plane will be taking me to CDG this morning. D-AIQF will be doing the honors on this leg, delivered factory fresh to Lufthansa 21 years ago on 26/07/1991. Unfortunately I was unable to get a good picture of it. Boarding began 8 minutes late at 11:13 so I joined the short line. It only took 5 minutes before the gate agent scanned my BP and wished me a pleasant flight. I thanked her and headed into the jetway. 21/10/2012 CDG-FRA LH1031 // 29F/ later to 30F A320-200 Lufthansa // D-AIQF 11:35-12:40

Once entering the aircraft I was greeted by 2 female FAs in a friendly manner and headed to the back of the plane. At the back of the plane were 2 other female FAs who also both greeted me, all 4 FAs got their job done with few smiles on this flight. As I was one of the last ones on the plane and seats 29D/E were occupied by a couple I asked one of the FAs if I can move back to the last row (which was free) to which she acknowledged. At 11:48, 13 minutes behind schedule we rolled onto 9R and started take-off roll immediately: ![]() Rotate!: ![]() Which gave a nice view of CDG, shame about the weather though: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Much better weather up here: ![]() Once the seatbelt sign dinged off the crew sprang into action, the snack this time was a cheese croissant. Together with that I got a coke: ![]() In no time we started our descent towards FRA and lined up for final approach to runway 7R: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And touchdown at 12:31, 19 minutes ahead of schedule!: ![]() ![]() We exited 9R and taxied towards the terminal. But not before taking a quick picture of my aircraft: ![]() And its next door neighbor: ![]() A 5 minute bus ride followed and I was released into T1. Just as yesterday, I headed over to the new LH Business Lounge. I stayed here for the next couple of hours waiting for my last flight of the weekend. The lounge was busy during my whole stay there where I got the opportunity to catch up on some TRs. ![]() ![]() ![]() BP for this last flight of the weekend: ![]() I left the lounge just after 16:00 and headed to my assigned gate A10, which is a bus gate. Once arriving there boarding was already well underway so I scanned my BP and headed into the waiting bus. A couple more passengers came and the doors were closed. The bus was not even half full meaning either it was a light load or this was the second bus. A 10 minute bus ride followed and we were released in front of our aircraft. D-ABXL did the honors on this leg, a classic 737 delivered to Lufthansa 26 years ago on 05/12/1986. Dedicated to Markus: ![]() 21/10/2012 FRA-AMS LH996 // 25F B737-300 Lufthansa // D-ABXL 16:37-17:40 I boarded via the back stairs and was greeted by a female FA. The crew on this flight consisted of 3 females, all getting their job done with lots of smiles. A short walk followed to my assigned seat 25F. First I had a little trouble finding some room for my carry-on but eventually found some space further down the aircraft. I have to say this aircraft was still in excellent condition considering it is 26 years old! ![]() The OK legroom for this short flight: ![]() 5 brothers sitting on the tarmac awaiting their next flight: ![]() Right after getting seated the doors were closed and the Purser came on the PA with the usual announcements and an announced flying time of 50 minutes. No welcome from the cockpit as far as I know, but that could have happened before I boarded. Flight load was pretty full at 90% with the aisle seat occupied and the middle seat next to me empty. We started pushback 2 minutes behind schedule at 16:37 while the safety demonstration was being performed: ![]() Taxiing to runway 7C: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After waiting for a couple of aircraft ahead of us we rolled onto 7C and started take-off: ![]() ![]() Rotate!: ![]()

A nice line of aircraft coming from all corners of the world: Seatpocket contents were the same as all 3 previous flights except for the safety card: ![]() ![]() ![]() The seatbelt sign got switched off and the crew sprang into action. A lengthy walk followed to the baggage claim, no checked baggage so I headed outside passing customs on the way out to who I was of no interest. I headed straight towards plaza where I took the 7 minute train ride back home. A 10 minute walk followed and I was home again after another great weekend! 4 short hops on Lufthansa. Lufthansa was like Lufthansa usually is: Punctual and friendly crew. Getting a snack on a flight under 1 hour is always nice. It was great to fly a brand new aircraft but also a 26 year old one, which was in great condition! The new Pier A+ is great and a nice addition to FRA. Love the fact you can get up close and personal with all those heavies, fantastic. The new LH Business lounge is very nice! Ibis CDG Airport has a great location. The rooms might be a bit small but was perfectly fine for me and in good condition! This will conclude my trip report. If you’re still reading, thank you very much for taking the time to read this report, it is much appreciated. Please feel free to leave a comment or ask a question, I would really appreciate that!
