Since Delta was getting rid of the MD11's soon, decided even with school being back in but while my dad still was off from work for the holidays, to fly back to Atlanta and hop on the MD11 flight to LAX. Originaly we were planning to catch a flight at about 10:35 to ATL so we left for the airport at 8pm and was parked in the employee parking lot, on the trasm and at the terminal by 9ish. We used the kiosks to check in and got our boarding passess and headed to security. We walked to the gate for our original flight, where the people working it were all people my dad knew so he went up to talk to them, and while he talked I took at look at the GID and saw that we werent gonna be getting on that flight most likely so we got them to change our listing to flt 360. So we headed over to our gate to see if any info was showing on the GID, but they hadn't opened the counter yet so we walked to a quieter area of the teriminal since the gate area was crowded due to another flight (below)..

Next to our gate, at gate 57, a China Southern flight was close to boarding when they announced that the flight would be delayred from 11:40pm to 2:15 am (whether the flight was delayed earlier to 11:40,I don't know).. so the gate area around where we were boarding was pretyt full with our flight, and the China Southern 777 flight.

Boarding begain at 11:10 and we received our boarding passess and made our way on. We weren't selected for the random gate screening (which, btw, they still are doing at least in the Delta terminal at LAX). Took our seats and I got a sprite to drink. The seats were the old style firstclass seats (the big cushy seats..not the new slimlined seats I've seen in some of the 757s.. For some reason, the older seats just seem much more comfortable.)

Once everyone had pretty much boarded up in first, the lead F/A (I've already forgotten what Delta calls the lead F/A.. something coordinator I think) came around and asked everyone if they would be wanting the snack they were serving on the flight (which was a cheifs salad with a honey vinaigrette dressing) and what would we like to drink. Both of us (my dad and me) said yes to the salad and chose what we wanted to drink. I got asked for iced tea.

We departed on time and taxid to the south runways. Infront of us taxing was an Air Jamaica A310 taxing to take off as well so we were number two for takeoff. We turned onto the runway and soon heard that whine from those 757 engines as the engined came to life and we took off. We flew straight for a bit out over the ocean then made a left turn and flew down the coast, then another left turn and headed inland.

Once I heard the familiar chime for reaching 10,000 feet, I reclined my seat and started listening to my Good Charolette cd.

Meal service begain shortly after that with the hot towels and bringing out the linen, then they brought us our drinks, and shortly after that they brought each person their tray (they brought it out one by one, by hand, instead of using the cart). Drinks were the same way (brought out by hand or on the little tray they carry.. not the cart). The movie they were showing was "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" but I wasnt interested in watching it since I had seen it already.

After meal service, I got some sleep for most of the flight and didnt wake up untill the loud (annoying..lol) chimes announcing our final approach. We flew over downtown Atlanta, then made a bunch of right turns and lined up with the runways and made a smooth touchdown. We taxid to A6 and then hurried off... which, as it turns out, I left my cd case in the fricken seat pocket infront of me.. which, we didnt find out about untill our next flight... by then it was too late, so now.. I'm waiting for them to send my cds from Atlanta (anyone who works there wanna help me get them back asap? lol..they at least have my name in them and they were found.. but I hate not having them.. almost 600 bucks worth of cds there!)

We were the first ones off the plane and headed then to the MARTA rail and downtown to get a lotto ticket and back.

We got back to the airport at about 7:50 ish and used the kiosks right there at the marta station to check in and get our seat request cards. From there, we headed over to security which was long. The first line we got in wasnt moving so we changed, and then that one was hardly moving so we switched again and made it into one we were thru faster then the other lines we had been in. There was a big crowd to get onto the train, but we were still able to get on. Took the train all the way out to the E concorse where we stopped to get something to go quickly at burger king.

We made our way down to the gate, only to hear my name being called out (to tell us about my cds) then also to get our boarding passess. Then it was about 8:15 and my cds were all the way over at gate A6, so I didn't have time to run over there and the gateagent didnt seem too responsive to getting them to bring them over, so I just had to slap myself for forgetting them and board the plane pretty pissed. On board I was greeted with a great sight- Business Elite on a MD11. So comfortable. I knew I would be able to get some sleep so I could go to work tonight.

Got something to drink and waited while boarding continued. At the time we boarded, they were already boarding all rows, so I didnt think I would've had enough time to run to A6 get my cds, and get back.. but the door didnt close untill 8:45, so I dunno... probably wouldn't have made it.. but I may have. But I wasnt willing to risk it. While I was sitting there during boarding, went to raise the window shade on one of the windows I was near, but the plastic thing was broken. I ended up cutting my finger on it slightly (so far two strikes to my day..lol) and got a bandaid for it. The one F/A ended up getting the lead F/A to come over to see if I was alright - which was stupid, it was just a small little cut..sheesh.. I just wanted a bandaid so I didnt get blood on anything- and then she had me write my name and address down on a piece of paper (now.. I might see this for a revenue passenger, but as a non rev.. it was strange... not like I expect anything for it... I mean, whats the most they could do? Not like there is anything to give credit twords on a free ticket and all.)

We taxid out to the runways (I get so turned around at ATL, that I have no clue what runway we took off at, and in what direction), and were number 4. Take off was smooth, and powerfull. I love that plane for its take offs and landings. We were airborn shortly and soon at 10,000 feet where I got the headphones out to listen to some of the onboard music. That is when I discovered the sound on my seat didnt work. I wasn't too happy, but not surprised. They tried rebooting the system at my seat, which still didn't work, so they said I could switch to the one empty seat near us, but I didn't feel like it. Then later after meal service, the lead f/a ended up asking a passenger if they would switch so I could watch the movie (really nice.. but not necessary) and I told them nah.. I was fine not watching anything.. just wanted to sleep now.

So back to the flight. Breakfast was offered, which we had a choice between a mushroom and cheese omelet, with fresh fruit. Or cereal, with fresh fruit. I chose the omelet, and so did my dad. Turned out to be really tasty again.. and this time, there was actually MUSHROOMS in my MUSHROOM omelet! The last time I had it, I swear there was maybe ONE mushroom in the whole thing..lol. After meal service, I reclined my seat all the way and went to sleep.

Slept thru the entire flight and only woke up again as we were making our decent into LA, and just shortly before the final approach ring was made. When that happened, had to raise the seat back to being upright. Approach was smooth, saw a Singapore 747 on approach next to us. We landed and then had to wait for an Aero Mexico MD80 ? plane to take off. We then taxied into the gate and that was the end.

So, I was happy I got to fly on the md11 at least one last time. VERY VERY mad I left my CDs on the other plane, but happy I got my cdplayer at least. And now.. I just gotta get those CDs sent to me. Anyone wanna help speed up the process?  Confused Big grin  Big grin

Good report. Does your dad work for Delta or something? I hate it when the electronic seats dont work. I was flying from EWR-FLL on CO on a businessfirst configured 757 and my footrest was broken. Can't they just fix this stuff BEFORE the plane takes off?

Yeah my dad works for Delta... he has tons of senority so I take full advantage of it when I fly (and I'm spoiled from it as well.. which I'll totaly admit... since we get first/biz all the time if we plan right)..

and yeah, I wish they could've fixed it.. hell, she (the lead F/A) even said there was a note in the system about the problem.. but, I understand it probably not getting fixed untill the plane went back to Atlanta since it just got in about four hours earlier from Brazil.

Excellent report. Do you know what date/month that Delta are retiring the MD-11s?

I keep hearing a bunch of different stuff. One of the F/As that both my dad and I were talking to said she had heard/been told it wasnt untill next year.. but on this site, I've heard spring/march... maybe its 2004 for the Pacific MD11s to be retired and the rest spring time of 03?

ps.. sorry for all the typos in my original post. Typed it up when I got home, and was just a touch groggy.
