Having read a previous post regarding the longest flights in the world I have some info. In the "Airways" magazine dated December 2000 there was an interesting article called " Long Haul Flight". It states that Flight202 from JFK to JNB is one of the longest in mileage. A big number of 6991 miles. The trip is about 14h 35mins in time. The Cape Town to Fort Lauderdale (en route to Atlanta) is longest in time, and the Atlanta to Johannesburg service is some 460mi more distant. All in all South African Airways currently operates the longest routes using Boeing 747-400's.

UA will begin daily nonstop service from JFK to HKG
and this will be the longest (8067 miles) in the world.
This new service is scheduled to start on April and will be flown by 747-400 and the flying time will be about 15hr 40min.

Well Continental will start the same service, so it will be also be the longest, but I am not sure about the flying time. I think that the 777 flight will be the longest, as the fastest airliner is the 747.

L'Espace180

Continental is going to fly EWR-HKG which will be a few miles shorter.

I don't get it. Doesn't the 777 have a longer-range capability than the 744? Why don't they put the 777 into service for these real long flights? It's great for ETOPS routs. It's said to be more efficient. Don't get me wrong, I love the 744 [and the 777], but I was just wondering. I just think the 777 is being used far below its actual capabilities.
In '97, Boeing was discussing using a new version of the 777 for routs such as Singapore to LA (18 hrs). I think that'd be great, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see what Boeing comes up with next!

I believe CX is looking at starting JFK-HKG flights non-stop using A343's over the pole.

005's (CO) n/s service from EWR to HKG is also scheduled to be 15.40 hrs....

Over the north pole, no doubt.

Where do some of ya'll get the idea that EWR/JFK-HKG and JFK-JNB are longer distancewise than ATL-JNB? I checked on distances and flying times between the city pairs (on CRS) and according to everything I've found, SAA's ATL-JNB 744 service will still be the longest flight out there by several hundred miles. If you're talking timewise, well yes, that's a different story given the prevailing winds. But really, that's a somewhat more dubious distinction, eh? I flew ATL-CPT a year ago and that was PLENTY long for me at almost 15 hours.
Anyway, for the record, according to Delta Air Lines CRS, ATL-JNB is 8,439 statute miles. JFK-JNB is 7,973 SMs. I don't remember the exact mileage EWR/JFK-HKG but it's right around 8,000 SMs (I'll write it down next time I'm at work). For comparison, UA's ORD-HKG is 7,788 SMs. LAX-SYD is similar, not quite 8,000 SMs.

Go Springbok!!

Los Angeles-Melbourne is currently flown both ways nonstop by Qantas and United, though I hear United is dropping the nonstop route soon, reverting to LAX-AKL-MEL.
SAA were flying CPT-MIA a couple of years ago when I took that flight. I was upset that they turned off the AirShow from soon after takeoff, when they had a map of the projected route along the NorthEast coast of Brazil and over the Caribbean, until after we had passed abeam Nassau on descent. It was a night flight all the way, so nothing to see.
We must have had good winds, as I show it as 12hrs 58mins takeoff to touchdown.

CO's recently inaugurated EWR-HKG will be 2 MILES shorter than UA's JFK-HKG, which will give UA the number one slot and CO the number two slot. Nice to see a 777 that high though.

Well the flight times are always changing every few months due to winds but one of the longest flights,if not the longest in the world is Korean Air IAD-SEL....at about 15 hrs...

Another note-worthy mention is Dubai to Newark
(DXB-EWR) on Malaysia Airlines (MH) at 14hr 30 mins...

And also Cathay Pacific HKG-YYZ nonstop on the A340 has to be the longest A340 flight there is...

The longest 747-400 flight might be the TPE-JFK non-stop flight too...does anyone know for sure?

If you are going on Flight tume then i think LAX-SYD or LAX-MEL would win it.

LAX-SYD is over 15 hours even with Winds and LAX-MEL is just over 15.30 hours.

One the way to LAX it is even longer. Have no idea why though!!

Cheers
mikey
