I am guessing that most of you on here have never been to Pago Pago in American Samoa. Yesterday, I worked a flight from HNL to PPG and back to HNL and I had my camera with me and I thought I would share the photos of the airport and scenery with you all. Hawaiian has 2 scheduled weekly flights from HNL to PPG departing HNL on Thursdays and Sundays at 5:05pm and arriving in PPG at 9:30pm. The return flight to HNL departs PPG at 11:20pm and arrives in HNL at 5:30am. However, during the summer, HA adds an additional day time departure on Wednesdays, leaving HNL at 7:35am and arriving in PPG at 1200pm with the departure back to HNL at 1:50pm and arriving in HNL at 8:00pm. It is rare that I get to see PPG in the day time and the airport is at a very beautiful location as you will see in these photos.
I'm not going to write a lengthy trip report here, I'll just say that the flights were heavy in both directions, (literally heavy, we used 16 seatbelt extensions on the way to PPG   ), and they were on time. Here are the photos, enjoy.

Stunning pictures. What a beautiful part of the world. Thanks for sharing! I take it since it is America Soma, there are no immigration formalities. Does Hawaiian treat it as a domestic flight?

Beautiful. I always wanted to visit Samoa. Now even more so. How many hours is the flight? I am guessing 6 hours.

I guess the majority of the passengers are Samoans? I flew from Honululu (I can't spell it) to Papeete many years ago and everybody seemed to be Tahitian.

I've always wondered how many extensions get carried on a plane. And what happens if you run out due to a large number of lard asses on a flight?

Ha! I've seen a fair share of chubby Brits running around over here in the US and over on your side of the pond. Though we as Americans do seem to be a bit chubby, myself included.

FlyingDoctor is right... Samoans are renowned throughout Polynesia for being especially large people. There are quite a few of them who put their mass to good use and became NFL players, like Mark Tuinei of the Dallas Cowboys.

Awesome pictures, by the way. I've always been fascinated by Hawaiian's South Pacific flights to PPT and PPG. Too bad they don't fly to Tonga or Fiji anymore!

Very funny! Actually, the majority were American Samoan.

It is treated as an international flight as all passengers clear customs and immigration in Pago Pago.

It's closer to 5 hours from HNL.

We are stocked with 12 extensions and we had to order another set of 12 before leaving HNL!

I agree, although we never did fly scheduled service flights to Fiji, I did enjoy working the flights to TBU.

Hmmm, I guess I have my Hawaiian Airlines history backward then. Didn't they pull out of another destination in the South Pacific besides Tonga? Was it the Cook Islands? I was pretty young when HA's South Pacific routes were being built up, but I thought I remembered 4-5 destinations before they cut it down the current two (PPG and PPT). I may be getting mixed up, however.

Back in the 1980's and early 90's, HA had scheduled service flights to Auckland, Sydney, Rarotonga, Tonga, Apia, Papeete, and Pago Pago from Honolulu. The Auckland and Sydney flights were made with a stop in PPG. All flights were discontinued with the exception of PPG and PPT routes, although nonstop flights from HNL to SYD were reinstated in May of 2004.
Also back in the 80's, Hawaiian had charter flights from Nadi, Fiji to Tel Aviv Israel. These were U.N. charter flights as Fijian soldiers were and I believe still are used as part of a multi-national peace keeping force in Lebanon. We would ferry an empty plane to Fiji, pick up the troops and fly them to Tel Aviv, making stops in Singapore, and usually Abu Dhabi or El Sharjah. I have also worked the Fiji troop flights with a northern routing from Fiji to Anchorage, then on to Frankfurt, Germany and then on to TLV. These flights were flown with our DC-8-62 Series aircraft. I miss those days!

Great Pics HALFA!!

Next time you should take some pics while inflight as well. It must be nice to see PPG in the day. Did you bid for it because its not a night flight, or are you just 'tired' of SYD  Wink

I took it because it was a quick way to get 12 hours of flight pay as we are paid 10 hours and 45 minutes for the scheduled flight time and another hour of pay for going over 14 hours of duty time.
As for SYD, It's too cold there right now so I'm sticking closer to home this month and doing mostly LAX, LAS and PPG flights with one 5 day SYD trip at the end of the month. Are you back home yet?

Yep.....I've been back since June 22. I start my job (at an insurance agency) on August 1st and wait/hope AQ (or HA) will hire F/As soon. Aloha's hiring manager lives about 600 feet from me and I saw her the other day...she seems to like me so I think they will hire me the next time they hire. It seems that most of their furloughs should be recalled soon (if they haven't been already).

I'll keep you posted HALFA!!

Another Hawaiian flight I remember is the military charters from Honolulu to Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. Made the trip three times in 1988-1990. Stopped at Clark AFB and Singapore en-route. Used DC-8 combi aircraft. Series 62 I think. Cargo in front, pax in back. Short body, Pratt engines. Great flights, great crews. (ps this was back when I enjoyed flying )

That is correct, all passengers and crew go through immigrations and customs in HNL on arrival from PPG, and yes, I have a passport stamp from American Samoa in my passport as I have been through that airport on several occasions on visits to Apia and Savai'i.

Oh yes, I remember those very well. I used to work those flights quite often, although most of my flights to Diego Garcia were from Athens, Greece with a stop in Bahrain. Diego Garcia is actually one of my favorite places!

So that's what PPG looks like... Big grin

Actually, I still haven't been there yet, day or night. I was based in SEA the first four years here, so there weren't any PPG trips, and now that I'm back and in HNL, they go too senior for me.  Yeah sure

Someday I'll get that reserve call...

Now that I've thought about it a bit, I have a couple questions for you HALFA.

Do we (the crew) go into the terminal for customs processing? And what do you do during the two hours of the turn in PPG (besides prep the plane)? Is there time for a short walk to stretch your legs?

I can answer that for him. If we want to go out side the ramp area either to do some shopping or to visit with family and friends, we go through the customs area and only flash our IDs and passport. It has been a few years since I have done a PPG and its not high on my list to do since except for once a week it is a red eye turn.

It is not necessary for the crew to go through customs and immigration as we are not laying over. However, if we decide to get off the plane while there, we show our badge and proceed on through customs and are usually waved on through. As for me, I normally just relax on the plane as it's air conditioned and it's usually hot and humid outside, but when I was there last week, the weather was perfect!

My first flight out of the United States (except Canada) was HNL/PPG/PPT on a Pan Am 707. PPG airport reminded me of Keahole with the rustic look and "garden" gates. IIRC, we merely went into the terminal as we were through pax to PPT.

But the PPG airport and all the surrounding areas are beautiful. The South Pacific (PPT, BOB, RAR, PPG, PPT, etc.) is one of the most exquisite creations on the Earth. And the Earth is totally exquisite. Pollution is man-made. These islands have the luxury of trade winds. Keeps 'em clean!

Mahalo, HALFA, for the great photographs. They bring back terrific memories!

Wonderful photos! Thanks so much!

I did smile when I read about the seatbelt extensions. Not quite 2 weeks ago I arrived in Auckland at 6am from Perth, and ahead of us was a very recently-landed Polynesian Blue flight from AS. I've never seen such corpulence! The only thing larger was the amount of luggage each passenger was hauling around. Customs had a field-day throwing away things like coconuts and breadfruit. Truly another part of our world.

No. Hawaiian Airlines is the only passenger air carrier serving Pago Pago. HA has 2 flights per week from HNL to PPG (3 per week until August 23rd)

There are not very many nice hotels on the main island of Tutuila, where PPG is located. The Tradewinds Hotel would probably get everyones vote as the nicest one. There are some great beach resorts on the islands of Upolu and Savai'i which are located in the independent nation of Samoa (formerly Western Samoa).
If you really want to get away from it all then I would highly recommend a visit to the Vaoto Lodge on the tiny island of Ofu in the Manu'a Islands of American Samoa. I stayed there with some friends a few years back and it is as far removed from civilization as one can get, and in a very beautiful location. Have a look here:
