Greetings! It's been a while since I posted a trip report, so I decided I'd give you a taste of the airline/airplane that I fly on the most: Airtran and the Boeing 717.

Airtran
Flight: 279
ATL-BOS
Aircraft: Boeing 717-200
Registration: N961AT
Departs (Scheduled/Actual): 9:20am/9:20am
Arrives (Scheduled/Actual): 11:50am/11:45am
Class: Business Class
Seat: 2A
Boarding Zone: 1
Flight Attendants: Denerick, Tony, and Sharon
(I didn't catch the names of the pilots, unfortunately. I apologize for that.)

My day began at 4:30am, when my alarm woke me up. I took a shower and did my normal morning routine, with the addition of last-minute packing  Smile A quick check of my email and out the door I go at 5:50am. After a brief stop at the pharmacy, my dad drops me off at the MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) station at North Springs. MARTA offers a convenient North-South line that goes from North Springs to ATL in approximately 45 minutes. Due to unspecified delays, however, the trip took an hour today.

That's me!

When I got to the MARTA station at ATL, I took a few pictures of the platform.

I leisurely proceeded to the check in counter located right next to the MARTA station.

A pleasant woman checked me in immediately. I asked if Business Class upgrades were available for my flight, and she confirmed that they were available. I proceeded to fork over $60 for the upgrade (it's worth it) and received my receipt, err, boarding pass (hehe).

For those of you who haven't had the opportunity to visit the fortress that is ATL, here are some pictures of the check-in and baggage claim areas, as well as the Rotunda.

I took the tram from security to Concourse C, as in Charlie  Smile

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/scottbo/IMG_0792.jpg

As always, I went to my gate to makes sure I knew where it was located and that there weren't any gate changes. When I confirmed that everything looked swell, I headed to the other side of Concourse C, which houses Delta Connection flights. I like that side more than the other because there is a nice area to sit and watch the planes take off, and it's usually quiet. While I was there, I enjoyed a Chicken Biscuit w/ Hashbrowns and a Coke from Wendy's. Here are a couple pics of what it looks like outside.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/scottbo/IMG_0798.jpg

There wasn't much of a variety in terms of traffic, although I saw a Delta bus that had "Keep Delta My Delta" on it, which I missed getting a photo of.

Soon, it was time to head back to my gate and board my plane. Boarding was called at 8:50am, right on time. When I got to my seat (2A), I was asked if I wanted a drink. I asked for a Bloody Mary, which I quickly received.

Thank goodness for legroom!

Pushback was precisely on time at 9:20am, and shortly thereafter we took off from Runway 9L.

20 minutes after takeoff, Business Class passengers were given a choice of several snacks, including pretzels, walnut shortbread cookies, pork rinds, and other things. I had the cookies and a glass of water, which was delicious!

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j257/scottbo/IMG_0802.jpg

The flight went quite smoothly throughout, and at 11:45am (5 minutes early) we landed on Runway 27.

We parked at 1D and entered the FL gate area at BOS, which is very small.

Thank you for telling us about your trip on Air Tran. A report which is very rare.
How about the load? Was business full? Do you know anything about coach class?
Delta seems to put in a lot of money into their ads in ATL. Well after all ATL is THE Delta City.

Thanks for another ATL carriers trip report.

Business class has 12 seats, and 11 were occupied. I looked back in Coach and it looked as if it were around 95% full. On the 717, the Coach seats are extremely hard and the pitch is very tight. However, their 737s have much better Coach seats.

You paid $60 for an upgrade to a Business Class that offered next to nothing? I reckoned it must have been a slow day for you huh?

Pretzels, cookies, other things?
Sounds like coach on a Continental Express flight.
Why on Earth you had to pay $60 for it... granted, wider seat. But shoot, it's three hours.

I keep trying to make myself go first class on the next ANC-IAH leg, that's 7 hours... but I can't force myself to cough up the extra $900.

But for three hours, seems like I'd just tough it out, for no extra perks but a chair. For just a couple of those upgrades, you could buy yourself a decent recliner for your living room, which you'd spend way more than three hours in...

Just my opinion; to each his own.

haha, it sounds like the only business there was on that flight was saving the cash.

I had the cookies

at least they offer cookies unlike the pretzels on ua.. a sweeter experience  Smile

Thanks for sharing the experience.

I had to go thru ATL recently and found the airport to be very nice and extremely easy to get around.

I forgot to mention that the $60 was money I got for Christmas that I wouldn't have spent anyway. Plus, you could have unlimited drinks (alcoholic ones as well, no charge), as well as as many snacks as you wanted. Is it First Class on a major airline? Absolutely not! However, I fly this route VERY frequently, and the few extra perks I get are worth it to me.

Also, if you're strapped for time at ATL on a busy day and you need to get through security fast, you're out of luck in the general line. However, you'll make it if you go through the First Class line.

Oops! I just realized that my title is somewhat misleading. What you have read IS the entire trip report. I created the title when I thought I was going to have to do multiple topics for the TR, but I realized that I didn't have to do that. So, this is Part 1 of 1.

To all who commented, thanks for your input!

Back in my AirTran days, even if I didn't get biz class, you better believe I wasn't driving when I got to where I was going.

That's one thing I can say about FL...they tend to take care of their non-revs with the booze....even in coach. Then again, we were working for AirTran...we needed to drink.

Next time, ask for a "Tootsie Roll". Orange juice and Kaluha. Those AirTran F/A's can be creative with the drinks sometimes.

Thanks! The 717 is a great aircraft. It's a shame they didn't make more.

Prehistoric meets the Jetage!

Any idea what dinosaur that is? It's got the head of Allosaurus, but the characteristic short arms of T-Rex. But it's not the right pubic bone structure for T-rex or Allosauraus.

I know, I know, it's a random question to ask, but I'm wondering if it's an actual skeleton or not.

Great report. Always wondered how AirTran was, and this was good insight.
