A few pictures from a trip on Swiss from Geneva to New York on an Airbus 330 in Y class. The check in line was the longest I had ever experienced. The 20 minute wait was not that bad however. At the desk I was told that the flight was overbooked and that I would be upgraded to Business Class. I was told to get my seat at the gate. I didn't believe a word I was told and I waited at the gate for over 30 minutes for a seat. Sure enough I was given a Y seat as I thought. I asked the Agent if she could give me an aisle and she gave me a new seat which I certainly appreciated.
I noticed that they had a good supply of English and French magazines.,something they did not offer 2 years ago. The blue coloured seats were attractive and the seats seemed to be more comfortable than the hard ones from 2 years ago which were hard on the toosh. I am guessing they had them reupholstered / improved.
The entertainment system was excellent with quite a few movies and decent music / individual video screnes. I actually watched a movie which I rarely do. However the headphones were cheapo and difficult to put behind my ear. I actually broke one and needed a new pair.
The crew were polite but not as friendly or jolly as in the past. I later found out that they cut the number of crew in economy and they looked a little stressed. The friendliest / most pleasant crew member was the Pursar who was in his 60s and must have been a previous Swissair crew member.
As to the food this is something Swiss tend to skimp on in economy class. We were served a plain green and red lettuce combination. The green and red colours were pretty but the salad was bland. At first I searched under the lettuce for a tomato, a cucumber, an olive but alas I could find nothing. I looked on the floor hoping that maybe they had fallen off the tray but alas I found nothing.
Then came some small pieces of chicken, bland tasting gnochi with bland boiled peas and carrots and a not very tasty sauce. At least it was filling but not very enjoyable though edible unlike a recent trip on Continental. The best part of the meal was the Camambert cheese and the Nestle chocolate mousse.
The flight occured on April 9th. I enjoyed the mousse until I read on the label that ...."it should not be eaten after the 3rd of April." My first reaction was shock. Am I going to die I thought to myself. I felt fine and my breathing seemed to be OK. I looked at my neighbour to the left and noticed that her mousse also expired on April 3rd. She had devoured it all and as I examined her discreetly I noticed that she was still alive, not at all pale and reading her book happily.
I mentioned to the Pursar that I was not making a fuss but that he should at least be aware of this. He reassured me by saying that in a recent study consumers who ate food that had expired 30 days before, were not affected. He said he would write a report. Here is the meal and the date on the label.
The snack consisted of a small calzone which I gave my neighbour to the right whose mousse had expired well after April 3rd, sometime in May. Before landing we were offered a piece of chocolate. My neighbour declined but did not even offer the chocolate to me. This pissed me off as I had offered him my calzone. Oh well, this will teach me a good lesson not to be so generous next time.
My previous trip to New York was in February on Iberia through Madrid. I did not take pictures of the flight except for the parking garage in Madrid which had just been attacked by ETA. Here is the picture.
The seats on the Iberia A340 were more comfortable and the food was fantastic. Even the coffee was great. When I complimented the stewardess she proudly told me that it was "Colombian coffee." However the entertainment system was below average with no individual video screnes. Crew were average.
In the past 2 years I flew transatlantic on the following airlines and this is how I would rate them (out of 10) compared to Swiss.

As you can see I survived the Mousse. However I don't understand why the pictures are so small. Never mind.

I must say that getting served food that is past due date is something unacceptable, and her excuse of the 30 day period is, although she is quite right, ridiculous! As an airline you don't serve food that is past its due date, period.
The reason they told you you were going to be in C was maybe because they didn't know for sure already, and they thought that if they would have sent you off to the gate without seat assignment in Y you would've gone mad or something? Tell someone they'll get a seat assignment in Y at the gate, and they'll be very worried, tell them they'll get an upgrade, and they're as sweet as a pie...

Are you sure? The normal terminology should have been something like "The flight is overbooked in Economy, we will be doing upgrades, you'll get your seat assignment at the gate" - which does not mean that you will be upgraded. Unless you have some Star Alliance Elite status (or whatever they call it), chances to get the upgrade are quite little anyway, so I'd be surprised that the agent said you'd get an upgrade.
Nice report, though I have to confirm that the pics are quite small. By the way, the number of flight attendants in the A330 economy cabin has been reduced from four to three already two or three years ago, as far as I know.
Regarding the meal past due date: this should not happen, really. But I wouldn't worry too much about that, at home I eat meals past due date every day

The Agent was very young. Maybe I did not make it to C because I was so slow getting to the gate. I had a cup of coffee and looked at the shops which may have caused the loss of an upgrade. I saw a family of 4 being upgraded and they were jumping with joy. I don't blame them. Thank you for the feedback. If it had happened to me I would have been dancing, hugging and kissing them all. I have never been upgraded.

Yes I agree it looks delicious in the picture. Looks can be very deceiving. However I forgot. They do serve ice cream in the middle of the flight which is a very nice gesture and gives an energy boost.
