25 May 2007

Reason for Trip: Had to accompany a business partner and his partner as they will be going to Bali for the 1st time so basically, I had to tag along (with the Mrs as usual) to be their tour guide to Bali.

Jakarta (CGK) – Denpasar, Bali (DPS)

Flight: Garuda GA404
Aircraft: B737-300
Reg: PK-GHQ
Class: Business
Seat: 1F
ETD:0930
ATA:1100
ETA:1205
ATA:1320
Flight time: 1.33hrs
Cruise: 33000 feet

Pre Flight:
Being me, I woke up late as usual, but luckily for a Friday, traffic was pretty decent all the way to the airport. We managed to arrive at the airport with 1 hr to spare. After the concierge helped us with the check in, we proceeded to the relatively new GA executive class lounge to hang out. Within several minutes, the concierge came to give us our boarding passes. I actually also managed to buy 1:400 scale models of GA’s B738 and B744. (Many of you will know that I am actually an avid collector of these models!)

Usual Morning Rush at CGK

GA Executive Lounge

With 15mins to go before departure, we decided to walk to the gate. When I asked the agent who took my boarding pass whether the flight is on time, he said yes. But guess what, 5 mins later they announced that due to ‘operational reasons’ the flight will be delayed by 1 hr! So its back to the lounge for me.

GA B744

In Flight:
PK-GHQ is still in relatively good condition despite the inflight offering really starting to show its age. No IFE of any form and most of the time was killed by reading my book ‘Honk if you’re Malaysian’ (9MMAR should really buy this book).

This meal is really bad, plus they have serving this same dish for almost 4 mths now, I wonder who plans the catering in GA!

In the air on the way to Bali

The flight was pretty uneventful, only drama being my entire overhead panel collapsed! Reading lights and all! Ahahahha….it certainly gave my fellow passengers a fright! But the f/a which assisted me in putting it back just laughed and commented ‘Sudah biasa pak!’ meaning, that nothing unusual! ….welcome to Indonesia and GA!

The culprit back in place

The real saving grace for GA in J for their 737’s is that it has one of the most generous seat pitch in this class of aircraft.

Just after getting off the a/c

Conrad Bali Resort & Spa

Depensar, Bali (DPS) – Jakarta (CGK)

Flight: Garuda GA409
Aircraft: A330-300
Reg: PK-GPE
Class: Business
Seat: 1F
ETD:1525
ATA:1545
ETA:1605
ATA:1600
Flight time: 1.19hrs
Cruise: 31000 feet

Pre Flight
Time really does fly while you are in Bali, although this time I really didn’t enjoy myself as much as I was actually being a tour guide for one for one of my business parner. I thoroughly enjoyed the hotel which I stayed at which was the Conrad Resort and Spa. When we got to the airport, I noticed that some works were being carried out at the front of the airport, so at least they are trying to facelift this aging airport a little.

Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport

Check in was brisk and in no time we are in the GA lounge. Pretty bare and no one was there except for one lady. Although as it got closer to boarding time, another 10 people came into the lounge.

GA's Executive Lounge in Bali

Boarding was pretty messy with no dedicated lines for J passengers. It got pretty crowded since this was an A330 going back to CGK!

In Flight
GA’s A333 really starting to look its age. IN terms of cabin comfort, I would put it relatively on par with MH’s A333, although MH will do a refit in the J cabin soon!
This flight was uneventful and I managed to sleep most of the way back to CGK.

Bali certainly see a lot of nice Asian carriers!

Goodbye Bali!

Maybe, but compared to other parts of the world, I wouldn't be complaining!

I'm impressed with GA's lounges - although the inflight service doesn't quite mirror it.. shocking that the national carrier no less has such a lax attitude to safety. I think I'll avoid GA  sorry

Nice report, good set of pictures, thanks for posting them.

Re the panel collapsing, not seen that happen before, did it hit anyone?

Hotel looks quite nice, I'll file it away for future reference.

Mark

hi. i'm a part time bali resident now (hubby and i bought a villa in seminyak) and i love it when more and more people are coming back to bali now. the conrad is certainly a very nice hotel, but since you're a seasoned bali traveler, i'd recommend for you to try the desa seni in canggu the next time you come down. they just opened the resort and it's a very, very interesting hotel. the owners collect vintage indonesian wooden houses from different islands/provinces and he put them all together in this resort. so you're "room" would be these fabulous vintage wooden houses! we had a nice lunch there over the weekend and i was very impressed with what they've done: http://www.desaseni.com/ and if you have money to burn, def check out the new bulgari resort ; http://www.bulgarihotels.com/ down in uluwatu. it's beyond fabulous! expensive as hell tough  Smile.

Ladies & Gentlemen, we will now demonstrate the use of the safety equipment on this aircraft...

You have reminded me many times but I still have yet to purchase the book. But I did read an online review about it in the writer's blog.  Smile

A nice 'business' trip. The highlight would be the Conrad Resort & Spa. I would like to stay there someday. What's the triangular building inside the resort? A church?

Actually its a Porsche Design bag, under the Cayenne collection...had it for years now !

Quoting Cxtra (Reply 2):
Maybe, but compared to other parts of the world, I wouldn't be complaining!

Maybe you're right, they also still serve soft drinks, juices and water, plus refills, on my JK flight earlier this year, not even a tiny glass of water was served!

Quoting Cxtra (Reply 2):
I think I'll avoid GA sorry

Well, for us in Indonesia, there are no other choices except GA (which is actually the best). The other step is to own your own bizjet which some people I do know has!

Well, it was above me and the Mrs, so, it almost took my head off :P

Yes indeed, its oe of the newer hotels in Bali, but the best is actually the Bvlgari Hotel, but definitely not the 'best' price  Smile

Quoting Singaporegirl (Reply 5):
i'd recommend for you to try the desa seni in canggu the next time you come down

Thanks for the advise! I usually make my quick weekend runs to Bali to top up my hotel points, and my 2 main hotel chains that I stay with are HIlton and Starwood, so usually I tend to stay within those brands. But you are right, the Bvlgari was great as I was invited to the opening and got 1 nights free accomodation!

Well it is about time. Bali's airport is really quite an embarassing example of the island with signs falling apart together with bad lighting.

Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter):

Aduh (again)... itu makanan apa si?? Udang, nasi, telur aja? And they call this a JCL meal?

Quoting ThaiA345 (Reply 9):

If I am not wrong, their schedules still show the 744 flying to Saudi. During the busy CNY periods, it was doing CGK-SIN-PVG due to the high cargo loads.

Ahhhhh... the sights of Bali and how I miss them. As lovely as those resorts look, I somehow prefer to rough it out in the smaller and more personal villas of Ubud (and also because I do not have much money). I remember climbing up Gunung Batur and although I almost died of exhaustion, the view from the summit was simply astounding. My next objective would be white water rafting in Bali...

Welcome to my starry one world alliance, a team in the sky!

Yes I did Mr Soh! SO when she opened up the foil to reveal the catering, I just lost my appetite!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 10):
My goodness... Sudah biasa?

Well, that a/c I was on was actually one of the lousier condition 737's in GA's fleet. It just missed my ghead, but if it did at least I can sue them or something ahhaha...anyway they won't be any damage done as I have such a hard head!

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 10):

Yes indeed, actually, believe it or not, sometimes foreigners who I spoke to don't even know Jakarta! But they all sure do know Bali, so yes, the airport definitely needs a revamp, plus the roads in Bali definitely needs to be widened

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 10):
And they call this a JCL meal?

Well it was, some soggy oily egg thing, and some other junk! AFter looking at it I really didn't have the appetite to eat.

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 10):

I am planning a reunion with my Singapore friends in Bali in early Nov. Rafting is definitely on the agenda, interested?

Actually Indomie tastes better!!, The topping was like minced meat, which was smelly, blend and super dry!
