Sent my very first report earlier. What horror when I saw my first TR was without pics!!
Spent another hour trying to get the pics up. My second try was alright. Whew . . .
With confidence and practice . . . the return sector SGN-SIN

Carrier: Vietnam Airlines
Leg: SGN-SIN (about 1 hr 40 mins)
A/C: A321

Had to use the stairs. I kindda like using the stairs as you can get real close to the a/c. Entering by the rear door.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z150/SIN7_photos/Rear.jpg

This is the leg space. Average Asian male height is alright. Won't say it's the best, but it's about standard EY 32" or 31" pitch for full service carrier. I like the fabric pattern and color. It's brown, gold, and beige. Makes the cabin much brighter.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z150/SIN7_photos/space.jpg

Cabin view and TV screens. The screens were showing the safety demo. Btw, VN safety demo is on youtube.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z150/SIN7_photos/Screen.jpg

Left turn over Saigon.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z150/SIN7_photos/Leftturn.jpg

My VGML(Asian). VN got my VGML-Indian order right this time. Lunch was Mint and Apple Salad, Veg curry stew with three pieces of pratha and dessert, payasam. The salad and curry was OK. SATS Catering does it better. But the payasam was the best I ever had. It's creamy and not overly spiced or sweet. May not be authentic, but it was great for me. I licked the bowl clean. My gut feel tells me it's packaged dry powder instant dessert mixed with cream. Any how it was delicious.
http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z150/SIN7_photos/VGML2.jpg

Service on VN is polite and efficient. Nothing spectacular. A/C and cabin is very clean.
It's not fair to compare VN inflight service to MH, TG, MI, CX or SQ.
However, it far beats PK. To me it's almost comparable to mainland Chinese carriers or even TK.

Again, apologise for the short report with few pics.
I will put up my China trip on CZ and MU soon.

You boarded the aircraft at the new soon-to-be-opened terminal at Tan Son Nhat. They should do that no later because the present terminal is almost bursting at the seams to cope. I hope they manage the new terminal better though because the present way of doing things just suck...

I also notice that the flaps have already been deployed while you guys are boarding. I wondewr if this is SOP at VN?

Do you order AVML for the heck of it, or you are really a vegan? I have some friends who pre-order special meals only because you guys are the ones that get served first before everyone else!

By the way during my last trip there, me being me (and my adventurous parents) all went crazy raiding the street hawkers! The french loaf, endless bowls of pho, the grilled meats and grilled spring rolls... aww man... salivate to the max! Funny how we couldn't understand the hawkers during payment so we just fanned out a wad of notes in our hands at the face and signalled them to "come, choose and take what you want". They could have cheated on us for all we knew but still after they took the money, we were like stunned and "you mean that's it? That is only 80 cents leh!!!"... Hahahaha...

And yes, language was a HUGE hurdle. But nothing beats sign language! Just point, point and point some more...

Congrats on your first 2 trip reports!!! ....and welcome to the club of TR writers! Previously I am just like you, reading and browsing and only since last year have I been posting my TR's. I am up to 9 now I think, but far below Ryan's 60 odd. Like I always said, he is the 'lau ciao' of TR reporting ! Actually I think every sector he did was one TR whereas I put every trip as a whole ahahahhaha ...no lah I am not picking on him ...just overly zealous of his trips....:P

Anyway if you are interested, here are my TR's if you are interested. Cheers!!

When I first landed I thought we'll be using the new airport, but NOT! It was so crowded at the old airport.

Hmmm, you're sharp. Didn't noticed it. Not sure if's NV or SOP. Anyone in engineering would know?

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 1):

Nah, I'm no vagan. I order SPMLs what the catering uplift station is good at. I'm not fussy about airline food or receiving late. When getting meals late with no choice, F/As are almost always polite and would try to cater to your needs. I try not to miss AVML from SIN and LHR (DXB good too); and SFML from NRT. These SPMLs are like SQ 'Book the Cook' for us in cattle class ha. . . ha . . .

Quoting Ryanair!!! (Reply 1):

Man . . . I missed those. I watched Anthony Bourdain's 'No Reservations' on Vietnam and have been yearning to get my hands on those phos and bbq meats. You got me all hungry and jealous.

Hi ThaiA345
Thanks for the welcome. It's great having like minded people. Have enjoyed your TR too. Lots to catch up with you guys.

Tan Son Nhat Terminal 2 will be officially handed over to the airport authorities this month or next, and will be fully operational by either October or November 2007. I had the opportunity to visit the almost completed terminal last month, and was impressed. In terms of layout, it adopts the split level departure/arrival concept similar to HKG, BKK, TPE etc. Nice open spaces and gardens, impressive 2 storey high arrival hall. Reminds me a little of PVG. I look some pictures of the new terminal, and am looking for a website to host the pictures before posting them here.

It's such a pain to load pictures on a.net.  Sad

But better to pay the fee so you will get unlimited bandwidth, with the free sit, a lot of the pictures will be unable to be viewed due to the fact of bandwidth limitation?

SQ772,

as you probably know by now, I am creaming in my pants as I look at the photos of the new terminal. I have always wanted to run through the halls of an airport with access to EVERYWHERE and have no one to stop me from going to every nook and cranny. And there you had the chance to do it, my wet dream...

Ah... I see you messed up your pants yet again....

I'll have you know that running through the halls of an airport that is still undergoing final touch-ups is a very dangerous thing to do... you might just bump into scaffoldings, or worse still a Vietnamese security guard... !  faint

I remember visiting Changi Terminal 1 just a few months before it opened in 1981. I don't remember how my dad did it, but I recall my siblings and I running amok all over the terminal, right from the check in hall, all the way to the gates where they were doing some test runs with an SAF charter flight using the SQ 747-200s. I asked my dad if I could go into the aircraft... and answer was of course "Cannot lah".

The same thing happened in Dec 1990, prior to Changi Terminal 2's opening. Once again, I joined my dad on a tour of the almost completed terminal 2 one evening just after booking out of Tekong and still in my army no. 4! LOL. I remember commenting how sterile and bland T2 looked then compared to the colorful carpets and water features in T1.

17 years later... I will be going on a tour of the new T3 in a couple of weeks - before it opens to the public for pre-view. It will no doubt be a serious affair as it will be a business event, but I can bet you my heart will be pumping as fast, and my mind running amok as they did way back in 1981 and 1990  Smile

So Ryan... cream liao?

Looks like you were born to do airport previews. Any chance of having me tag along for the T3 one? I promise I will not mess up my pants... Maybe just a bit but it wont show... I promise... Remember I work at the airport and have a pass! Hehehehe... But just maybe not the same access as those in T3.

So what happened when Paya Lebar opened? You were pushed around in a pram before it opened? Maybe in your other life, you were surveying the grounds of Kallang Airfield too huh?

You have no idea how jealous I am feeling now. See you this Sun! It is confimed.

I may look old, but I'm not that old. Or do you know when Paya Lebar was officially open? I wonder if anyone has pictures of Paya Lebar during the last few days it was operational as a commercial airport... I can hardly remember how the interior looked like.
