Hi everyone,
this is my first trip report on airliners.net and I hop you enjoy it.
My father and I decided to make a nice trip to Riga from the 15th-17th of July. airBaltic is the only airline, which is operating on this route from TXL. Easyjet is operating from SXF, but the airport is at the other end of the town, so it is quite comfortable for us.

On friday evening we arrived at Tegel Aiport for the check-in. Our flight was planned for 8 p.m., but unfortunately a big thunderstorm was forecasted for that evening. Fortunately we had luck and the thunderstorm came after midnight. But now here are the first impressions of the airport:

Condor 757-300 parked at A01

Our plane, a 737-300, had just arrived.

The departure hall of the flights. We were put together with the passengers of the flight to Warsaw.

Air Berlin dominating at TXL, here together with low-cost company Niki.

Then our flight was ready for boarding and we went to the busses.

BT214
To: Riga Int. Airport (RIX)
Dep.: 8:00 p.m./9:00 p.m. (GMT+2)
Arr.: 10:30 p.m./11:20 p.m. (GMT+3)
YL-BBL (Boeing 737-300WL)

Boarding was no problem, but then the big waiting began. 20 minutes after boarding the last passengers arrived, but then still nothing happened. But nevertheless I was lucky, because I caught this picture.

One hour after the truly departure, we taxied to runway 26L and took off.

The river Havel and its several lakes.

The district "Charlottenburg" after a 180°-turn eastwards. You can see Tegel Airport (left) and the "Olympiastadion" (right).

Above the clouds...

Now the crew had another problem. They had for the whole plane, which was booked up (around 140 passengers), only one food trolly.

So it took a long time because all the people wanted to eat something and had to pay. I was in the last row and we were shortly before landing. Only one meal was left over and I had to eat it very fast. But I made it and was prepared for the touchdown on runway 36.

We got of the plane with 50 minutes delay. The terminal of Riga is brandnew and I was able to make this shot before I passed the passport control.

Then we took a taxi and went to our hotel, which is in Jurmala at the Baltic Sea. The next day we walked a little bit at the beach.

A little later we took the train to Riga and I will show you now some photos of this nice town.

The Freedom Monument

The "Three Brothers", every house is build in another epoch.

The cathedral of Riga, build in 1211

View from the church St.Peter. You can see the big market at the bottom, the river Daugava and the television tower (368,5m).

City hall

The "Roland" in front of the House of the Blackheads.

At the second day we visited the Art Nouveau houses, which Riga is famous for (Latvian Romanticism). Here are some of them.

Changing of the guard in front of the castle.

Then we had to take a taxi to the airport. Unfortunately we weren't asked for a window seat and so we got a middle and a galley seat. After the passport control I had enough time to check out the airport.

The new terminal B.

EZY A319 shortly before pushback.

OS DHC-8-400 hidden behind som airport stuff.

TK 737-800 taxiing to runway 18.

BT 737-300 has finished its pushback and will depart soon to London.

KL F100 was not able to take off because of technical problems.

I coudn't believe my eyes, when I saw this beautie landing. An old Hawker of the UK - Air Force!

BT 737-500 arriving.

Of course airBaltic is dominating at RIX.

BT F50 arriving from Gothenburg.

RIX tower

Another BT F50 arriving from Kuressaare.

Our flight was already called for boarding, but I had to catch tis nice bird.

airBaltic 215
to: Berlin Tegel Int. Airport (TXL)
Dep.: 6:15 p.m./6:45 p.m. (GMT+3)
Arr.: 6:55 p.m./7:25 p.m. (GMT+2)
YL-BBP (Boeing 737-500)

Our flight was already late, when it came in. Our departure was a little bit windy but okay. This time I was able to choose my favourite meal, because one trolley was enough for the little 737-500. The plane was nearly full (95% I think).

After a smooth flight we were cleared to land runway 26R.

Some skyscrapers of a suburb.

Short final runway 26R.

Finally we touched down and even had the pleasure to arrive at an air bridge.

I hope you enjoyed reading my first trip report, although it is very long.
See you soon,
Drogba

Hi,
welcome here with your first writing! It's quite nice to read actually.

So, on your outbound flight you decided to buy a meal shortly before landing? I hope it wasn't too expensive because you can't really eat relaxed in such situations I think. Also the B737-300(WL) seems to have 'easyjet'-seats in the cabin?! Big grin

Your pics from downtown give a real good impression of the city, which is looking good! Wow, great broadcasting tower! Nice overview given by your images.

You mention also the B735 arrived late inbound from TXL, and you flew back to TXL on that same plane. Can I assume BT night-stops at TXL?

Rgds
Eric

Well, I had no choice. The crew was so slow, that it took the whole flight to hand out the meals. The pitch isn't as narrow as it looks like. Maybe a bit smaller than at Lufthansa for example.
Unfortunately I made a mistake. The flight didn't come from Berlin, because there is only one flight to Berlin on sunday. Our plane went back to Riga the same day.

Hi Drogba,

nice report, well done. It's not easy to get a flight on a B737-300 with winglets. Just out of curiosity, what kind of meal did you have, and how much did it cost?

Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 1):

Which is not a surprise, as this is an ex-Easyjet aircraft.

Some kinds of cheese with crackers. I think it was about 3 LVL (about 4.30€), but I'm not sure about the price, maybe it was cheaper.

Felix,

Excellent report and pictures: thanks a lot for sharing !!!

Brings back sweet memories of my 2005 visit to Riga and Jurmala: it's a great place to spend the weekend in summer - nice architecture, girls and cheap food

Regarding your date: I guess it's 15-17june, 2007 as July still to come ...this is, because I noticed PH-KBX in the background in one of your TXL pictures, and she arrived at TXL on 15jun from RTM...

Cheers.

Great first trip report here on airliners!

Nice to read about Riga and enjoyed seeing your pictures of the city. Pity about the food trolley on the way out, wouldn't have been too happy about that. RIX also looks a pretty modern airport,

Thanks for posting

Drogba,

Thank you for this very interesting report and excellent pictures. I am a Riga-native and enjoy reading every TR associated with this city. Actually I'm going there myself next month and will make sure to include a detailed TR as well. Too bad you only had 2 days to spend in the city, there's just a lot more to see.

Did you have any problems with Latvian customs? I know that they recently made this rule that everyone must present a proof of valid health insurance upon entrance. Is this really the case or just an official policy?

Leo.

I didn't notice such problems. They made only an accurate look at the passport.
