They main reason for this trip was to go and see the Concert of Metallica at the Valle Hovin Stadium in OSL! Two friends and I planned to go to Norway and attend the show!
Also the opportunity to fly again made me even smile more, so again I booked non-rev tickets for us on SK direct flight AMS-OSL and back.
The alarm clock woke me up at 06.00hrs and my GF kicked me out of bed as I needed to rush a bit to get to the railway station 12km from home. After we finished the morning ceremony of showering, eating coffee etc. we drove of to pick up our friends. My GF brought us to the railway station and we were in time to hop on and get to AMS airport within 90 minutes which is not too bad, considering it was rush-hour. We were in time to queue up at the end of an enormous line for check-in and my fear started a bit as we were not confirmed on the flight.
After waiting for over an hour we finally checked in and were told we had second to no chance to get seats on the flight. Nevertheless we went trough security which was only 10 minutes waiting time. At the gate there were 2 persons handling flight SK 822 to OSL and I handed over our tickets. The female gate agent, who was very friendly, told us to sit down and she would do her utmost to get us on.
We waited until boarding started and after the last calls, we were called to the desk and another female agent said we had seats, although not together. This is no problem at all, we were on! A nice surprise was the seat number we received with 2A, 3C and 3D, which was C-class!
Flight: SK 822

Seat: 3C

1st flight on the 737-700 and the first on this machine
After boarding we were told by the captain that we had to wait a bit as the airport was closed down for departing traffic due to heavy thunderstorms directly above the airport. So we waited and we received some orange juice from the experienced female flight attendant. There were 3 female attendants on this flight. After waiting for more than an hour we were being pushed back from the finger gate C9. Luckily we took off from rwy 24 which is the closest one to the gate and we made a sharp right turn to the north and later to the north east. Seats were covered with fabric, and legroom was enough for this flight of approx. 1,5hrs.
Shortly after take of service began with a nice hot meal with beef, potatoes veggies and a tasty fresh salad. The meal tasted really great! I did not make any pictures of the outbound flight due to the fact my batteries died and forgot to take fresh ones with me.
Our route went over the Waddensea to the Danish coast were we turned north towards OSL.
We were assigned runway 01R for landing and after a very quick decent we smoothly touched down on the Norwegian tarmac. Taxi time was quite short and we parked next to a company 737-600 at a finger gate. After getting of the aircraft we went downstairs to the Flytoget desk to buy 3 tickets to the city of OSL. What an amazing terminal building OSL has, everywhere you look you see wood, wood and again wood! Truly impressive to see!
The Flytoget train brought us in a fairly short time to the city centre of Oslo, were we changed onto the bus to bring our luggage to the hotel. After dropping our stuff, we went back per tram to the centre and walked around for some hours to do some sightseeing of the city.
Here is a selection of the pictures I have made in Oslo.
The next day we first went to the Holmenkollen Ski-jump arena to have a superb view over the city and the Fjord.
Then we needed to rush a bit to change clothes and get ready to go to the Valle Hovin arena and stand in line to have a good spot to enjoy the concert!
We stood about 6 meters from the podium and had the best sight of all! They played sharp and it was one of the best performances I've seen from Metallica!
Flight: SK 8xx

Some spotting at OSL :
We arrived back at the airport with some time to spare before our planned flight was scheduled, so we stopped by Peppe¡¦s Pizza and had a quick bite.
The check-in was somewhat the same as the way to OSL with the agent doubting if we would make it on the flight, remembering us we had non-rev tickets.
Security was a breeze and we did some shopping in the tax-free area. The gate was already getting busy and when the gate agents started their work, I took our tickets to the counter and asked how the flight was looking. It was slightly overbooked and chances were slim, the friendly male gate agent told me. During boarding he gave us a sign and told us he had 2 seats available for us, and that one of my friends was assigned a seat in Eco and the other in Eco+.
My boarding pass stated "Seat no. CO" so they arranged the best place in the world for a passenger on an aircraft...THE JUMPSEAT!!!!!!
Wow, I could sit down and watch the whole flight from the flight deck! I was very exited to have this amount of luck! Really cool!
The captain gave a personal safety instruction how to handle the jump seat in case of an emergency so that it was not blocking the door. Also the place of the life vest was told and he asked me if I would like to listen to the ATC via headphones, what I obviously accepted without any doubt!
Pushback clearance was given, and we were starting up the nr. 2 engine first, nr. 1 engine was also called duty and after the thumbs up from the captain we taxied via the engine test bay to rwy 19L. Take off was set around 85% trust and after V1 the pilot flying took the baby-Boeing to the cloudy skies above Gardermoen airport.
We made some nice turns before heading towards the southwest. Throughout the whole flight we saw nothing but clouds and more clouds, but it sure was a great sight from the office upfront.
Our cruising altitude was 40000ft at mach 0.77. We crossed the German Dutch border around GRQ where we turned more to the south to have a Spykerboor approach for rwy 18R.
Descending through the clouds we turned hard right and we had the rwy visual.
Touchdown was somewhat rough as we got a slight wind shear just before touching Dutch soil.
Taxi was long before we took our parking position at finger-gate B13.
After collecting our luggage we went to the train station to get the train back home.

Hi Joost!
Quoting DALCE (Thread starter): After waiting for more than an hour we were being pushed back from the finger gate C9.
Strange. As SK usually only operates from B-gates in AMS. Was this caused by traffic jam caused by the severe weather (it's long ago I saw so many lightning that close to me!)
Quoting DALCE (Thread starter): did not make any pictures of the outbound flight due to the fact my batteries died and forgot to take fresh ones with me.
Hmm... you will only forget that once
About your return flight: really cool experience huh?! That's the luck you can have when travelling as airlinestaff. Although I got your planes' regno. out of your pics Was this your first ride on the jumpseat by the way? I'm sure not your last, with your trip to one of our schoolmates upcoming
I've been on the flightdeck several times now (HV B752, Volare Antonov 12 and JL B74Y) and indeed, these experiences are simply the best!
When is your next flight?
Cheers,
Eric

Hi Nick,
First of all thanks for reading my report!
Quoting Nickbbu (Reply 1): But still... Lucky bastard! It sure was your lucky day!
It sure was my lucky day as I really feared that we could wait for 4 more hours for the next flight back home
Quoting Buck3y3nut (Reply 2): sorry to say, but pictures aren't working... Great TR nonetheless...
Hi Buck3y3nut,
could it have something to do with bandwidth? It works from my home pc aswell as my office pc.

There was also a SK MD-8x ( still can't see the difference ) to ARN on the C-gates.
Only an LH 733 was at B9. B11,B13 and B15 were occupied with 3 A320's from Vueling.

Yep, it was a first timer! Really cool to experience it!
In sept hopefully we can make another jumpseat ride with the BA RJ100
Quoting Airbuseric (Reply 3): Although I got your planes' regno. out of your pics
Yup, I noticed it this morning. Well I tried my best
Next Saturday the 14th. LH4689 to FRA and in the afternoon back on LH4682. It's a dutytrip, but will make a report anyway
I wished I could take the last flight back ( LH4688 ) as the nightstopper is currently planned as AB6, but my customers will not like it to arrive at AMS at 22.30 when departure was at 07.35

I agree, aslo my impression when I was last in OSL.
About your jumpseat ride, nothing better, I had only one in my log, on an Bulgarian registered Mil Mi 8
the short hop from Malta to Gozo, some years ago.
But that was also a never forget experience.
Sad, from my point of view, that nowadays the chance for the non-airline-employees is rather limited.

That sounds also very interesting! Must have been a great experience aswell!
I have to admit it helps to be airlinestaff, but nevertheless it almost never works out, so I guess I was really lucky!

Hi Joost,
I'd swap a flight like mine ANY DAY for one in the jumpseat!!! Man how lucky are you.. Air New Zealand have some charity auctions which you can get a return (probably AKL-ZQN) jumpseat flight for $1200+. When I have the money I'll be doing this and sharing it with everyone on here!
Did they let you take photos during take off and landing and throughout the flight? And were there any other rules you had to follow?
Quoting DALCE (Thread starter): I did not make any pictures of the outbound flight due to the fact my batteries died and forgot to take fresh ones with me
What a pity.. That's exactly what I did when I went to the zoo a couple of weeks ago and I was gutted but I managed to get a couple of shots of a Sumatran tiger.
It doesn't look too much different from the simulator I flew! But the experience of being in a real cockpit would beat any.
Oslo looks nice! What's the best Scandanavian capital city to visit?
well errr..........yes, she was in her sixties as far as I can remember
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 12): Did they let you take photos during take off and landing and throughout the flight? And were there any other rules you had to follow?
The captain gave me a special safety briefing as the jumpseat was directly in front of the door. So I needed to act quickly in case of an evacuation. Also they let me test it a couple of times to make sure I could do it fast enough. Pictures were no problem, although flash-light was not allowed during take off and landing.
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 12): Oslo looks nice! What's the best Scandanavian capital city to visit?
So far I only visited Oslo, but I honestly do think Stockholm and Copenhagen are both better places to stay than Oslo. There was not too much going on in OSL.

Hi Joost,
great report with many nice pictures from Oslo. Definitely a city to visit! Congratulations for getting a ride in the jumpseat - which is always the best place on a plane. I remember well several jumpseat rides in the past, e.g. on Air Namibia 747-400 and Iberia 727. Too bad these good old days are over...

Hi Joost,
great TR. I didn't notice it last summer Nevertheless it was a great read. Didn't know that you are a Metallica fan as well. If you are going to fly to their concert again, please let me know!
Flying in the cockpit must be something fantastic that I will probably never experience. Lucky you!

Nowadays I have a Nikon D40 with a 18-55mm and a 55-300mm VR lense.
Back in 2007 when I headed to OSL I still used my Fuji Finepix camera, can't remember the exact type anymore.
