Hi once again, well I embarked on another journey to Almaty, Kazakhstan, this time from Athens. The cheapest option was Turkish, although Lufthansa, KLM and British were offering a good connection. So the departure was in the morning, and of course like usual I get to the check-in 20 minutes before departure if not less. I don’t know why, but I have this habit. But the really nice guy at the check-in said “no problem” checked me in and I was on my way to the gate, had a smoke before as well. The first leg of my trip was Athens – Istanbul, on board Airbus 321, scheduled duration of the flight 1:15, but the flight was only 50 minutes. It was so fast, yet the crew served breakfast, coffee, tea, everything… loved the flight, well here are some pix and comments…
Route: ATHENS --> ISTANBUL
Departs: 13.JUL 10:50
Departure Actual : 10:55
Arrives: 13.JUL 12:05
Arrival Actual : 11:45
Flight Number: TK1846
Operated By: Turkish Airlines
Aircraft: Airbus 321
Delta getting ready for it's flight to Atlanta
Three American beauties, DL to ATL and JFK, CO to EWR
Olympic getting ready for it's flight to LHR
Another Olympic 340 to JFK as OA411
US 767-200 getting ready for a flight to Philadelphia, it was certainly an American invasion at ATH
Very good food!!! I was very happy about that
Istanbul had some cloud cover and rain as we were descending, well see for yourself
Approaching Ataturk International
One of the best landings i have ever experienced
Turkish 320 was taking off parallel to us
Once again, the landing was great, it was a turbulent approach, but the actual touchdown…smooth as silk. So now that I got to Istanbul…I had a 4 hour layover before my flight to Almaty. I went had a beer, took some pix, surfed on the net and then found out my flight was delayed about an hour. So this is my layover …
Aeroflot for Moscow
KLM for Amsterdam
I though this was going to be my plane, since my itinerary said A310 (the only one i saw standing there)
Then i found out the delay was for tech. reasons, and they gave us this beauty the new A330
After about 5 hours in Istanbul…they started to board us for Almaty. There was a plane change from A310 to A330, which made my day. First of all it’s new, flies smoother and has the screens I got too happy too quickly, the flight was ehh…the food wasn’t so great, a bit dry and well just not good. It was turbulent to the point where we had to keep our seat belts on for the entire flight, and the crew started feeding us only 2 ½ hours into the flight, that usually makes me very mad. But it wasn't sooo bad…I had worse. So here’s some info and pix about the flight…
Route: ISTANBUL --> ALMATY
Departs: 13.JUL 16:55
Departure Actual : 17:40
Arrives: 14.JUL 01:00
Arrival Actual : 02:10
Flight Number: TK1352
Operated By: Turkish Airlines
Aircraft: Airbus 330
Love the 330 wing
Turkish 321 was in front for takeoff
Turkish 1352 cleared for takeoff!
Where the turbulance started
Inflight entertainment, movies were awful
Dusk as we enter Kazakhstan
Arrival, an Air Asatna 320 (sorry for the quality i can't figure out my camera for night shots)
We parked next to Air Astana 320 from Aktau and Lufthansa 300 from Frankfurt
An Air Astana 757 for Frankfurt just started her taxi
Well I hope you enjoyed, I’m not a great photographer…but hope u got a glimpse of my trip. I’ll keep you guys posted on my return flight, route ALA JFK, I’ll be going home for a while. Most likely I will fly British Airways…let you know soon…

nice report and pictures - I enjoyed reading and watching.

There was really a lot of traffic from the USA. When I visited ATH last year, I only saw a single DL aircraft. But this might also be a question of the day-time - I departed a bit earlier in the morning.

Hi brilliant TR I really enjoyed it , TK are very good to fly with. OA and TK being in my favourite category. The food offerings are alot better on Balkan/Asian carriers. Thanks for the 2 photos of the OA A340's , I love them. Next time I go to ATH and when TK are fully in Star Alliance I want to fly TK DUB-IST-ATH. I have also heard lots of good reports about the TK long haul routes.

Great TR.. Thanks for sharing with us.... The TK 330 is a gorgeous aircraft ... And the seats look good when you are actually "in" the plane The PTVs are great but options are poor but it's AVOD which is also great. When I flew IST-BKK last year, the movie choices were much better as opposed to my more recent IST-SIN-IST flight. When you fly TK, try to check in online exactly 24 hours before the flight. It's likely that you will get the exit seat Just a hint from a very frequent TK flier...
I flew to ALA once when I was a cabin crew with TK in winter of 2000. Back then it was a 737-800 flight. Too long for a 737 if you ask me... Boring as hell even for the crew.... The city looked nice (much nicer and more developed than TAS which I also had stayed previously). I think we stayed at the Regent Ankara Hotel but it has changed since I have been told... We arrived in the middle of a snow storm and left when it was pissing rain so I don't have great memories with the city
There is a possibility I might move to Almaty in the next 2 years... Alternatives will be Bishkek and Baku... Let's wait and see....

Bishkek - no way. Very unstable and quite poor.
was in Baku 3 times last year - I liked it. Unfortunately I haven't seen a lot except hotel, office and the customer
But Baku looks almost like Turkey, it's closer to Istambul than Almaty or Bishkek and Azeri language is almost like Turkish language.
Almaty - it's my native city, I cannot comment objectively
