LIH-HNL on HA

HNL-MSP on NW

So I arrived at the airport with my 4 travel companions and went to the NW counter. There were 4 other people in line but I had checked-in on NWA.com so I saved 5 whole minutes!! The ticketing agent was very nice and I could tell he liked his job. We walk through to US immigration where we are pulled aside because my brother has a "common" name with someone on the no-fly list. Luckily we arrived at the airport 2.5 hrs before we boarded. So half an hour later we walked to our gate where I took some pics (please excuse quality). I like YYZ's gates because they have many clean windows.
So we have waited the remaining 2 hrs at the gate, now we are on the plane. I hadn't been on a NW DC9 before so I wasn't expecting much. I was really surprised because it was comfy the seat pitch was far more than most of our Canadian charter airlines give. The F/As were excellent and it was a nice flight. The approach to MSP was nice and I am pretty sure we landed on runway 22.
We waited for 1 ½ hrs. for our flight to HNL at gate F10.
We boarded the plane and our seats were clean and comfortable. The flight attendants were once again excellent and until now I haven't had any complaints with NW, only homeland security...
The entertainment system is not quite as good, as say, the AF340s but I did appreciate them all the same.
Whew, time went by and we are no landing. Unfortunately not on the reef runway though.
We have finished our first leg of our journey.
We now skip through 8 days to our next flight, if you want to call it a full flight. It is a short 30-minute island hop from HNL to LIH (Lihue, Kauai). The F/As whip guava juice at you while we are at 20,000 feet for 5 minutes.
While I was in Kauai I checked my email realizing that NW has sent me an email notifying me that one of my return flights was cancelled due to "operational needs".
We have been rebooked onto flight 2883 from MSP to YYZ. Before this we went MSP-DTW-YYZ. Instead of another DC9-32 we get stuck on a CRJ-200 operated by Pinnacle Airlines. This actually was good because we didn't have to make a stop in DTW; all we had to do was have a 5 hr. stop in MSP.
So it is time to go home so I want to confirm our seats on our HA flight to HNL so I web check-in. They are selling fist-class upgrades for $25 per PAX. I figure we have to wait at the airport for awhile so I get it solely for the lounge access.
The next day we get to the airport in Lihue and the ticketing agent prints our boarding passes and luggage tags. Of course we wanted our bags tagged to YYZ so she printed those out and I realized they were going to go on the cancelled flight from DTW so I told her and she had a 15 minute conversation with NW and the problem was resolved. She did a very good job and was very polite. Okay we are at Gate 6 in LIH and the lounge in LIH was under renovation so they say we will be able to use HNL's lounge.
Okay we are now in HNL after our 30-minute flight and we do have lounge access although the lounge isn't much to shake a stick at.
Now after 3 hrs at HNL we have boarded our A333 back to MSP.
A couple of the F/A's weren't the nicest ones I've met but nothing to write to NW about.
The entertainment system was also acting up and my brother's PTV was reset twice.
The rest of the flight was very uneventful. By the way if you are going on a NW A330 watch Currents the programs on it are very good.
So we are at MSP for 5 hrs and it is 5am so I want breakfast!!! We decided to eat at Ike's. It was very nice to have a fresh breakfast after 8 hours on a plane with no food.
After a loooong 5 hours at MSP we board our CRJ200 back to Toronto. But as our passes are being scanned the gate attendant is freaking out on us because our bags are apparently too large even though I have been on a CRJ before and I knew they were perfectly fine to fit in the bins. Now I realize her job is tough so I agreed politely. As we board the flight we meet our F/A, he was very nice and funny, that is a guy who really enjoys his job.
I finally slept after 24 hours traveling. Therefore I can't comment on the flight because I wasn't all there.
So we are off the plane and waiting for our bags, still waiting, and still waiting.
Long story short our bags were apparently in MSP still. So actually our ride home was much nicer without being stuffed to the brim with luggage. Our bags arrived at 9 pm that night.
To sum up, the trip was good. The staff at NW was very professional and I would fly with them again. But I still want to do a big trip Continental.

Quoting N202PA (Reply 3): Thanks for the report! How would you compare Hawaiian and Northwest, in terms of service?
It is hard to tell because of the short flight I took with HA but if I compared HA HNL-LIH with NW MSP-YYZ I would say HA comes out the winner. The check-in and gate attendants were better at HA and the flight attendants are similar to NW but HA wins again.
