Recently I flew Delta First (and BusinessElite) from RSW to ATL and ATL to LAX. Overall great service, planes, and timelyness. Here's the details.
DL941-RSW to ATL- I Got to the airport around 4:30 in the morning, checked right in at the Delta First Class check-in counter and headed to the gate. The Plane was an MD-88 (sorry, didn't catch tail number on any planes) painted in the "old-new" livery. I boarded the flight and was in seat 3A. Received drink service before flight. Took off right on time around 5:40 or so. Perfect take off...no turbulence or dropping or anything. The flight only called for a snack but in First class we were served a generous snack of Cereal, Bagels, Bananas and Toast. That day a cold front was coming through and we had to fly through it. Cloud cover must have been up to about 31,000 ft, as we were barely above it while we were cruising. We encountered a little turbulence as the clouds were producing storms, but the MD-88 really took it well. I think the MD-88 is the smoothest narrow body jet aircraft. (Much better than 737s or 757s, a little better than A320s) Anyways, we landed on time in ATL paralell to another aircraft. We then headed to the international terminal for the next flight. (I find the ATL subway system through the airport very useful and efficient)
DL79- ATL to LAX- This was my first time experiencing and international aircraft. BusinessElite on the MD-11 was very impressive, the pictures I've seen of it do it no justice. Amazing amounts of legroom, great recline (for business anyway) and good entertainment. We departed the gate early and were told that we were #1 for departure(amazing in ATL). We sat on the runway in front of the delta maintenance facility for a few minutes before the captain actually came out of the cockpit looking quite flustered, and headed quickly back to the coach section. This sort of worried me as I know that the MD-11 hasn't that great of a safety record (including many fires) and I am a nervous flyer. About 5 minutes later he came back and we took off uneventfully. This was probably the best flight I've ever had in my life. Take-off was great, smoothest I've ever had, and the seat was great too. MD-11 has to be my favorite plane because it flies so nicely. Great views over the rocky mountains too. We had a choice of 3 breakfasts, and I chose the French Toast with Canadian Bacon. Pretty good food for an airline, definetely restaurant quality. Landed perfectly, on time at LAX.
LAX-ATL
Honestly, this was the first plane I had ever flown on Delta that was new and had the new Livery. It was a 767-400. Probably the best domestic plane out there (excluding those configured international). The seat had more legroom than usual, a PTV with remote, and was quite comfortable. Unfortunately the flight attendants screwed up the Entertainment system and didn't play the feature movie, but every other movie and game worked. Take off was on time as usual, took almost all of the runway to rotate. (I found out that the pilot was just qualifying for the new 767-400, for some reason must have wanted a powerful take-off). The only thing I didn't like about the 767-400 was that it turns quickly and pulls more G's than other planes (except for the 777, which is the same way I've heard) Nice Flight, had pancakes for breakfast. A little bumpy approach into ATL, it was a little stormy there. The Airshow on the PTV said that we were going about 615 MPH on descent, I guess the captain wanted to get in before the rain came, which it did. It seemed like we would never get out of the cloud cover, it must have been about 20,000 ft. in the clouds. Nice landing and arrived on time as usual.
DL1089 ATL-RSW
Flight was delayed 15 minutes due to rain, first Delta flight I've ever been on that has been delayed. We didn't take off until about 5:05, had a little bit of a bumpy ascent through the clouds. Watched some Horizons Spectrum featuring CNN, CNNSI, and Frasier. Perfectly timed shows, as they ended just as we touched down in RSW. Pretty good landing, arrived at about 6:15 (30 minutes late or so, not bad considering storms in both cities). Overall a great experience with Delta.
Has anyone else ever had their captain come out of the cockpit when you were about the take off? Anyone know some possible reasons for him doing so?
Also, had hot towel service at the beginning of each flight and Drink service at least 3 times per flight. How do the other United States Airlines compare to this? I'm curious!
I am flying Delta First again to Seattle in about a week, I will probably make a post on that trip too.

Unfortunately, you haven't experienced the true Business Elite Service. Although you were in Business Elite, the inflight service offered was comparable to that of regular first class. If you want to experience the true BusinessElite, try taking it on a transatlantic or transpacific flight...you'll be amazed! Better food, and more inflight amentities like personal toiletry kits, slippers, and much more. If I'm right, your flight from ATL to LAX should have been continuing to NRT.

Yes, the plane was continuing on to Narita/Tokyo. I know I didn't experience true Business Elite service, but I still say that the seats' recline and legroom were great (especially the legroom). Business Elite must have been a huge improvement over Delta's old business class as I have heard that it was comparable to domestic first even. Thanks for the input.

Good report. Not sure what you mean by saying the 767-400 turns quickly along with the 777. I've only flown the 767-400 once, but I've flown on the 777 8 times in the past 6 months and have never experienced this quick turning or pulling a few g's.

Well, I wouldn't say it was pulling a few G's, just seemed to be turning faster than older planes do. The people I was travelling with noticed this also and said that this is how the 777 turns too.

Ok, I agree the 777 does turn slightly faster than many older planes.

Great report. My experiences on Delta were never great, but your report sounds very nice. I flow First Class from Omaha/NE to MSP in 1999 with Northwest and the service was quite worse, very standart. No hot towels, just two drinks and cheap peanuts. I flow Frist Class on Malaysian Airlines domnestic fligth last year and the service was amazing. Hot meal for a 50 min. flight. I'm living in Switzerland and Swissair is an excellent airlines. European Business Class flights are great and this april I flow Business Class from Zürich to Los Angeles. Service was amazing.
Greetings

Northwest has significantly improved First Class.
They now offer hot towels, moremeals on more flights, and the overal quality of the food is very good.
I find their seats comortable, but some form of leather would be nice or a adjustable head rest. Leather isn't a necesity as UA doesn't offer it and their seats are very comfortable in dmoestic first class. Wow, can you believe it , I just made a positive comment about United...

Well actually I don't really know how other airlines compare to Delta. They're probably similar, but I have flown Continental, USAirways, America West, and Delta. And I gotta say that out of all these airlines, Delta was the most professional and I also had the smoothest flights when flying with Delta. Seems like Delta handles things in a very professional manner, not that other airlines don't, but I think Delta has an edge in that department. Other then that, once I was flying from Columbus(CHM) to Cincinnati(CVG) and there were bad storms overhead and the pilot came out of the cockpit and he actually walked back through the isle. And this was on Delta and it was on a Boeing 727-200 jet. But it didn't scare me cause I'm not afraid of flying. I know the pilots know what they're doing, and look, you're much more at risk of getting killed in your car on the way to the airport then the flight itself. Flying is much much safer then driving a car, for sure. I know it's probably the worst fear for anyone(going down in a plane) but if ya just look at turbulance and roughness in a flight, just look at them as simple bumps in the road, that's all
