Part One - Getting There

Some time ago, fellow a.netter Wrighbrothers and I started to converse using MSN. In April 2006 we tried to meet at the "Not-so-amazing LHR A380 a.net meet" which was to no avail. We began talking about meeting up sometime, earlier in the year (February I think) and in April, I finally booked myself onto BA1433 EDI-LHR... So, hope you enjoy and seeing as this is my first trip report, go easy please!  bigthumbsup

12-July-2007

I woke up at 4:15am to the rain outside... I had 45 minutes to get ready before my taxi was coming to pick me up =] Jumped in the shower, got dressed and then attempted to straighten the hair but to no avail as just as I had taken the straighteners out of the box... the taxi pulled up outside the door  banghead

I picked up my bag, jacket and umbrella and headed out the door, locking it on the way out. I hopped in the taxi and in no time we were on our way to Edinburgh Airport!  biggrin
We arrived at the airport at 5:15am and I made my way inside. I attempted to use the BA self-service check-in but seeing as I did not have the credit card used to book the flights, was directed to a queue where I was seen to quickly and my boarding pass printed out%u2026 so with that done, I headed up to departures. I bought Airliner World magazine and some sweets to munch on whilst waiting for my flight =]
In the queue for security I was asked to remove my belt, which took forever as it doesn't like to come out of my trousers... the woman laughed at me and said "It's ok sweet heart, it's just for safety". I smiled at her and walked through the metal detector. For the first time in my life I was amazed as the thing did not go off... it always does.
I headed straight through to the departures lounge and duty free area, found out what gate my flight was at and sat there looking at the movements at EDI in the morning...

BA1433 was ready to board and we were called forward at 06:20... I was 5th on board the aircraft and was settled in my seat very quickly. 8F gave me great view of the wing and engine as you can see;

Just after this photo was taken, Senior First Officer Edward French welcomed us aboard and informed us that it would be he who was doing most of the flying on the 55 minute flight to London Heathrow.
Oh, and about 0640, this guy walked on to the plane and I had to do a double take, I thought it was ANCflye  rotfl  I didn't take a photo coz that's rude, but he was wearing the hat the same exact way... and it had something to do with the Military on the front!  laughing

^^check out the condensation forming in the engine and over the wing^^

Low cloud was covering the country and in a matter of seconds we were climbing into it. I got a picture of the railway line and viaduct that runs just to the west of the airport before we disappeared into the cloud;

We spent around a minute or so surrounded by cloud before bursting through them and sunshine shone in through the windows

We reached 37'000 feet by 0730 and the flight attendants began to hand out the "continental breakfast" to the passengers... or at least something they wanted to call a breakfast... it was ok but really salty

10 miles north of Manchester, with 170 to go to LHR, we flew past the contrail left by another aircraft, I looked for said aircraft but couldn't find it,  Sad

I sat back and listened to music on my iPod for a while until the battery died just as we began the stack for LHR.

^^Some traffic in the form of a UA something or other (I do believe) ahead of us in the stack^^

It turned out that the ENTIRE country was covered in cloud and I was hoping to see some of London as we approached the runway at Heathrow, but it didn't happen, lol

^^Coming thru the cloud about 5 minutes from touch down on 27R^^

I took a video of the landing but it doesn't seem to want to upload to YouTube or Photobucket so I've just left it out... Anyways, we touched down on runway 27R at 0805, just 55 minutes after leaving Edinburgh.

We turned off the runway about ½ way down and turned over to terminal one. When we were parked at the gate and passengers began to collect their belongings and head off, I got one last shot of some fellow traffic sitting at Terminal One...

^^BA A319, BA A320, EI A320, 2x BD A320, TG B744 and QR A346 {latter two at Terminal 3}^^

Before stepping off the plane in London, I did my usual and asked to see the flight deck. I told them I wanted to be a pilot for BA, they immediately took me into the cockpit and the captain sat me down n his seat.
"You can move the stick if you want"D, F/O French said to me as I sat down. He then took me through loads of things to do with the autopilot, warning sounds like "Too Low, Terrain" [which he cycled through] and showed me loadsa other stuff. I even had the captain sign my log book.  laughing
I sat in the flight deck for about 10 minutes with the crew talking to me. When the gate agent called to ask for me to get up to the gate, the flight attendants asked me what I was doing in London. I told her that I was down to meet a friend. She asked if we were doing anything special and I told her we were to be plane-spotting, the entire crew all went, at the same time, "Aww, that's cute" and so I walked off the plane with a smile.

Walking up the jet bridge to the main gate area, I took the PDA off of Flight Mode and then proceeded to call my mum and aunt Fran to let them know that I had arrived safely and was on my way to Terminal 3... I got a picca of G-CPEN thru the glass window before I headed off landside.

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l270/Jambofan/IMG_1578.jpg

I then tried to call my dad but no answer so I just headed over to Terminal 3. The original plan was for me to get breakfast and then meet up with Alistair at 10am outside TieRack in T1, so I headed over to T3 where I bought a postcard and stamps before deciding I didn't want anything to eat so I went into the Computer area on the first floor... where I found a wireless signal to get my PDA to surf the internet. I went onto MSN and found that no-one was on so I was sad  Sad I went onto a.net and surfed the forums for a while before I got bored and went for a walk.
I now love walking around in London (and the rest of England too) coz the Smoking Ban has come into place there and you can't smoke in an enclosed area, just remember folks.. Us north of the border were first with it..  laughing

I arsed around until 5 to 10 when I headed into Terminal One and hung around outside TieRack [across from WHSmith] and waited on Alistair. 9:59 came and the phone bleeped in my pocket. I had a text message.
"I'll be 10 minutes late. Stupid buses grr", It read. I replied with a
"It's ok... they're like that everywhere" or something.
So, with my spare 10 minutes I nipped back into WHSmith and bought some juice and really swithered over buying 'Attitude' magazine, but I had no space in my bag for it so decided not to get it  laughing

Part 2 - My day at Heathrow

I went back out to the BA self-check in machines between TieRack and WHSmith and sure as, at 10:10, Alistair’s friendly face walked around the corner, and with a wee wave, I walked over to greet him. A handshake was made and we headed out to the bus stop, and on the way decided to head down to 27L… which was being used as the take off runway.

We got down to the runway at about 10:30 where we sat down on the grass next to the perimeter fence. I didn’t take any pics there, probably coz I was too busy getting all the low down on LHR, and catching up on each other’s personal lives too, from Alistair. I saw Air Malta and Air India, two airlines I had never seen before, so I was happy right away.  Silly What I found hilarious about this part was that some people would pass in cars and honk, then wave… or honk and then give the fingers. I was in stiches laughing.
After about 20 minutes or so, we headed back to Hatton Cross and then up to the maintenance areas. We saw a BA 767 and A320 sitting together on some apron and then headed up to the 747 that Alistair and I thought was a Chinese 747SP…. when we got there tho, it turned out to be a Qatari Amiri Flight 747-400. We decided both to take pictures but as soon as I got the ‘Canon’ out and assembled we were moved on by security as we were in a ‘restricted area’… some restricted area that has no barriers to close off any roads until the fence 20 yards from the plane, and no police around either…
We moved on, me giving it all the gab about the police, which I referred to as the “Polis” (all Scots will know how it’s pronounced properly) and Alistair had no idea what I meant until I told him,  laughing

We walked round the Maintenance areas until we got to the approach for 27R… I was totally amazed coz even wee planes were amazing me.. haha… then the A340 came in  Silly

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l270/Jambofan/IMG_1581.jpg
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l270/Jambofan/IMG_1583.jpg

it was so loud, well, compared to anything Edinburgh has,  Silly

We went into Terminal 1 and went all the way down into the deep to catch the Heathrow Express over to Terminal 4 coz Alistair was going to show me around seeing as I had never been over before  thumbsup
The platform was huge, I was totally in awe, and I still got signal… my dad called at this point and I was amazed coz we were so deep underground… I can’t even get signal when I pass thru the smallest of tunnels coming out of Edinburgh Waverley train station. The train approached and took forever to come to a stop… it’s huge! I saw the posters saying that travel between terminals was free and decided that I wanted to sit in First Class, Alistair was all like “I don’t think it’s free”, but we sat there, no problem.
I thought terminal four was really cool.. a bit cramped compared to the likes of T3 and even T1.. but cool none-the-less.

We then decided to move onto the Model Shop in the Sheraton Skyline hotel… I was feeling very popular today because as soon as we stepped off the bus my phone went off… I answered the phone and my little cousin said “Hello”… I tried to talk to Alistair and Lachlan at the same time, but it wasn’t happening so I spoke to Lachlan and then my aunt Fran.. before getting off the phone just as we walked into the Sheraton.

Spent about 10-15 minutes in the model shop.. then headed out to MaccyDees for lunch… after ordering lunch I handed over a £10 note… the dude at the cash box gave it a funny look, as it was a Scottish note, and also the same look to me… I just gave him the “You will take this money or I am leaving” look and he took it,  rotfl

I got Alistair and I a table while we waited on my meal coming over…. so much for fast food likes. After I had sat down, I realised that my chair spun, we don’t have them in Scotland anymore… so I was having pure fun on it likes.

After lunch, we went out to the side of 27R… where landings were about to finish. We caught a couple of them in the form of an AA 777-200, taken by me, and a TAM A330-200, taken by Alistair.

It was now about 3:30... Alistair was heading off at 4 so we made our way down to Hatton Cross again, where Alistair and I parted and I went further down to 27L.. Where the planes were now coming in to land…  biggrin

I stayed there for a while and took these pictures;

Part 3 - Going home

Once back in Heathrow, I went up to the top of the Terminal three car park to get photos of departures and arrivals, next to the big sign that said “Photography is Prohibited”

^^Last picture before heading airside, check out those rays^^

I went over to Terminal One about 7:45/7:50pm and, seeing as I had checked in for the flight home while waiting for Alistair, headed straight through to departures. By this point I was really really tired and my feet were killing me. Word of Caution - When about anywhere for the entire day, do not wear converse, they hurt your feet  laughing
I stood in the long line for security and slowly but surely we moved forward toward the x-ray machines. They asked me to remove my shoes and I sat at the side of the line untying the laces of my shoes. Then, I took everything out of my pocket and placed it in the tray;

  • PDA
  • iPod
  • Coins
  • Wallet
  • Passport
  • also along with that, I Put in;
  • Shoes
  • Belt =/

At the end of the line, one of the guys at security took me over to the corner and did the whole personal check thing and I began shaking, I was thinking to myself, “Please god let me get home ok”… and apparently, it was just a routine check and they pick at random… Hmmm;
I got my stuff back and got myself all fixed then headed off to the gate area, calling my friend on the way.

Arrival Gate: 6

8:20pm came and the airline called us to gate 8a, I was third to pass through to the jet way. The turned us down a second corridor away from what I thought was our aircraft and down the stairs and right onto the apron where there were two busses waiting to take us to the aircraft. It took 5 minutes to get to the aircraft which was on a remote stand at the end of the big silver pier of Terminal One.
Many people got off the bus before me and so by the time I got to the air-stairs there was a long queue. I took photos whilst standing waiting to board the aircraft;
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l270/Jambofan/IMG_1761.jpg
http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l270/Jambofan/IMG_1762.jpg

It took a while getting up the stairs and on to the aircraft, but as soon as I was on, I was pointed in the direction of my seat.
Settling down at the window, the seats next to me were free so I put my camera and video camera bags in the middle seat and put my rucksack in the overhead bin.
10 minutes before departure time, a Chinese couple came on, one sat in 24C, the other in 24D… so I was happy to have the seat next to me free for the flight [as it turned out that I had].
8:50 came and the doors shut. We pushed back 5 minutes late for reasons that I don’t remember.

We turned on to the runway and held for a couple of minutes. At 9:30pm, the throttles opened up and we sped off down the runway. I videoed the take off but as before, can’t upload it L
We rotated parallel to T3 and shot upwards, into the now darkening London air. I took a few photos as we climbed out of LHR and waved goodbye to the best day of the year so far…

I switched my camera off for a while and waited until after the meal service was over. I was very hungry now, and was anticipating my complimentary sandwich, but it never came. They had run out of them and weren’t able to get more on the plane at LHR. Grrrr…. I did however get a [crap] hot chocolate and a mars bar…. So all was good  thumbsup
We reached 37000ft and levelled off. I went to the loo and when I got back out, we flew into some really bad turbulence. Then, we dropped 280ft or something, which I thought was nothing. I felt a tad ill and had to go back to the bathroom.
I got back and took more photos as we continued our journey north.

^^Some lake south of Edinburgh, I cannot find it on the map or Google Earth^^

G-MIDV continued north until we passed over the city and then out over the Forth… 6 minutes before landing the plane turned to line up with runway 24

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l270/Jambofan/IMG_1795.jpg
^^Just before turning to line up with the runway^^

That was the last photo I took of the day, I did take some of the city itself as we made the final approach into EDI., but they were all blurry and dark L

At 10:26pm, G-MIDV touched down with a thump and reverse thrust was applied, speed brakes deployed and we slowed waaaaaay down and turned off the runway.

We docked at gate 6 and passengers began to pile off. I collected my baggage and headed up to the flight deck, where I was invited to view. I only spent 5 or so minutes there, chattering with the pilots before heading out and up the jet way to head for arrivals and out to meet my dad.
Walking through the now empty departures hall, I found it hard to believe that I was there only 16 hours before hand, travelled almost 700 miles and had spent the entire day in London. I was chuffed with myself so walked out to meet my dad with a big smile on my face.

Well, there you go folks, my very long and very delayed trip report. Hope you enjoyed reading the report as much as I enjoyed taking the trip. I also apologise for the time it took to write this, I have just been so busy.

Before I go, I just want to add that all credit for the great day goes to Alistair for showing me around Heathrow… It was great to spend time with another person my age who shares similar hobbies  bigthumbsup

Ah ha ! at last the trip report comes, and very nicely done too Jordan, a whole load of great stories and photos there, it's just a shame I didn't have more time with you, but queen and country first I guess  Wink You must come back down at some point and I'll try and make more time, I thoroughly enjoyed my day.

Quoting Pawsleykat (Thread starter):
"I'll be 10 minutes late. Stupid buses grr", It read. I replied with a
"It's ok... they're like that everywhere" or something.

Yes, that damn bus....

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 1):
Alistair's friendly face walked around the corner, and with a wee wave, I walked over to greet him. A handshake was made and we headed out to the bus stop, and on the way decided to head down to 27L... which was being used as the take off runway.

Lol, I like that my face is described as friendly lol, but yea, I don't think you'll know quite how nervous I was walking around that corner Big grin

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 1):
What I found hilarious about this part was that some people would pass in cars and honk, then wave... or honk and then give the fingers. I was in stitches laughing.

Yea, I enjoyed that part, good fun turning the joke on them Big grin

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 1):
and decided that I wanted to sit in First Class, Alistair was all like "I don't think it's free", but we sat there, no problem.

Haha, typical me and typical you eh, my British reserve and your Scottish 'just go for it' attitude  Wink

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 1):
I got Alistair and I a table while we waited on my meal coming over.... so much for fast food likes. After I had sat down, I realised that my chair spun, we don't have them in Scotland anymore... so I was having pure fun on it likes.

I remeber you said 'my gran can cook McDonalds quicker than this just as the guy with your food came up lol.

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 1):
The following pictures, all the way up until the 27L landing ones were taken by Alistair.. having his very first go at an SLR camera..

You can tell it was my first time too ! all over the shop, but it was nice to use an SLR camera, might save up for one in the future.

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 2):
Once back in Heathrow, I went up to the top of the Terminal three car park to get photos of departures and arrivals, next to the big sign that said "Photography is Prohibited

That's so you Jordan  Silly

Quoting Pawsleykat (Reply 2):
Before I go, I just want to add that all credit for the great day goes to Alistair for showing me around Heathrow... It was great to spend time with another person my age who shares similar hobbies

No problem, was also good to have someone my age come down, makes a change fro mthe usual going round by myself stuff, as I say, you're free to come down any time and if you are, do give me a bell

Over all, well done old chap  Wink

Great report and pictures! I hear all the time that Heathrow is a pain to transit through... but doesn't the unsurpassed variety of aircraft make it more than worth it? Well done!

Hey there great TR. I loved the pics of the landing gear just off the runway on the AA metal. Also the BA 747 landing gear and the Iran Air 747 taking off . Reminded me of my flight on it LHR-THR.

Nice for you to meet other Anetters also.

Emm, I jusy want to ask, how much are the tickets and how would you compare BA and BD for their service on board?

I got the return ticket for £80... £40 for each airline... In heinsight I should have just gone for the return with BA, it was only a couple of pounds more... and the service with BMi on the return wasn't too good. They ran out of complimentary sandwiches before the flight to Edinburgh and then made me pay for a hot chocolate and a mars bar  Angry

Yeah - making you pay for something when you weren't even given your complimentary items really sucks, not good practice by BMI on that one.

Excellent report, shame the weather was a little dull to start out (hey, that's Britain these days though!  Wink ) but they still look good.  Smile

Great trip report.

Being and Englishman living in Scotland I can totally relate to 'polis' and the funny looks you get when handing over Scottish notes in England.

Glad you had fun.

Nice report and pics!

Would you mind giving a short explanation on how to get to that side by 27R spot? Where's that? I'll be staying at the Ibis Heathrow in September which is located to the side of 27R aswell, so should be close.

Thanks Big grin

^^I had never seen ANA before^^

Come to NRT, HND, ITM or KIX and you will see a lot of Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways. ANA flies 747-400's between NRT and LHR. JAL uses 777-300ER's.

Quoting Pawsleykat (Thread starter):
^^SQ Mega Ark… never seen one of those before ^^

SQ has names for their 747's. They called the 747-300 BIG TOP, the 747-400 MEGA TOP and the 747-400F MEGA ARK.

What are the good places for spotting at LHR? Queens Gardens, on top of the Queens Building was my favorite place but it's closed down now.

Excellent report with pics. Since you live so far up north it's not surprising to see the early sunrises and late sunsets in summer

Have you kissed a 777 today?
