So this is the first of the trip reports of my 2007 summer frying which saw me hop through 3 continents sampling 3 different airlines.

As usual when flying the short 1h10 hop across the Med, I try to score either the A300 or the A319ER as these are the only aircraft in TU’s fleet which are a C/Y configuration; the A320 and the 737 being full Y.

Although TU operates the flight, my ticket was AF enabling me to accrue mileage and benefit from the automatic upgrade upfront due to my Flying Poo level.
As I checked-in online the day before, I arrived at Tunis Carthage 45 mn before takeoff to check my luggage in at the dedicated TU “Espace Privilege” counters. I then made my way through immigration and customs and then towards the TU lounge where I grabbed a quick coffee (awful) and a croissant (nicey).

Our aircraft on that day was TS-IPB, the second A300-600R delivered to Tunisair, christened “Tunis”. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g220/UTA_flyinghigh/Hair%20Craft/TS-IPB%206%20aout%202007/TS-IPB-1-800.jpg

Although quite old, they are impeccably maintained both on the outside and inside.
They are however rumoured to be replaced by A330’s, which would be a huge improvement over the actual C product as you shall see later on.

Boarding was a good 15 minutes late (as usual in TUN) and families/elite FF’ers were given priority.

I was the first to board the C cabin so I managed to get pictures without anyone in them: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g220/UTA_flyinghigh/Hair%20Craft/TS-IPB%206%20aout%202007/TS-IPB-2-800.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g220/UTA_flyinghigh/Hair%20Craft/TS-IPB%206%20aout%202007/TS-IPB-4-800.jpg

As you can see, the interior is a step back in time in the 80’s and is quite outdated now.
No footrests, no electric controls and no IFE whatsoever (not even music!).
The seats themselves are however quite comfy as they are reasonably large, quite plush and with a reasonable recline.

Boarding was quick for a widebody as we were only 95 pax onboard.
The safety demonstration was done by the FA’s after pushback as no video screens are present on board these aircraft.

Taxi to the active runway was quick and we were n°1 for takeoff, as usual in TUN as the airport sees little activity, even at the peak of the summer season as most tourist charters fly into MIR or DJE.

Breakfast was served soon after takeoff as we reached cruising altitude quite quickly given our light load.
It consisted of a choice of juice (apricot, orange or grape), coffee or tea, a croissant (same as the ones served in the lounge and a muffin. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g220/UTA_flyinghigh/Hair%20Craft/TS-IPB%206%20aout%202007/TS-IPB-5-800.jpg

After the meal the duty free cart appeared with products either at rhaaingly expensive (perfume and alcohol) or surprisingly low(Tunisian delicacies) prices.

I took this opportunity to stroll around the cabin to document the Y class section: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g220/UTA_flyinghigh/Hair%20Craft/TS-IPB%206%20aout%202007/TS-IPB-6-800.jpg

Thanks to the small number of pax I could also get a decent wing shot as you cannot see the wing/engine from the front seats: http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g220/UTA_flyinghigh/Hair%20Craft/TS-IPB%206%20aout%202007/TS-IPB-8-800.jpg

After that it was already tim for descent so I made my way back to my seat.
After an uneventful approach we landed on tim at 9h25.

Score : 7/10 given the low price paid and the good service. The A330’s can’t come too soon however  Wink

Nice trip report. But I have to add that other european airlines do not offer IFE or whatsoever in their Business Class section. LH or AF are a good example. Other airlines offer a limited IFE through drop down screens whithout music : BA, LX or AF. So TU is not that bad at the end of the day. And the catering is much better than AZ's which offers only a cake and a coffee on those short flights.

The breakfast looks more like a Y quality not C quality. I had no idea it is such a short flight.

Well TU does not offer a C class on flights to NCE. PAssengers might use the C section but the catering is Y catering.

Hmm... TU has to improve indeed! The breakfast looks no good, for C-class. I expected a little more 'colourful' breakfast (some fruit added etc.). On the other side: flying the A300 nowadays becomes rarer and rarer, so that's positive to me. A330's would be fine with me too  Wink

What a shame!!!

Pay five or six hundred Euros more for fly in "C" class with this interiors and with this breakfast...

I remember when I flew to TUN from BCN in a new A320 in "C" class in the afternoon. Great service, nice crew and a very pleasant lunch with a little salad and a dish of beef with potatoes.

I will try to remember to not fly in the AB6 fleet of TU in "C" class...

Gerard

Euheuheuheuh it was more like € 300 for "Tempo Challenge" which gives EQM X 2 like "Espace Europe".

I choose to fly the 3B6 as it is rare nowadays, especially on short-haul (who still flies it in Europe apart from LH znd TU?).
If you want a nicey experience on TU fly the A319ER :

good trip report... The A319ER looks far superior to the A300. Almost as if they were two different airlines altogether...

I think you can still jump on the AB6 with OA as well?
And Afriquiah (Libia), MS, Onur Air and Fly Air are other carriers. But as said before, the type becomes rarer in passenger service.

That's the problem with TU. There is no consistency in the service. Your have those great A319 and the poor AB6. Sometimes you have inflight magazines and sometimes not.
They have 6 A320s with drop down screens and 6 without. Almost all that are equipped with IFE are used for charter and astonishingly, the others are sent on business routes with business class sections. So Tunisair has to gather its acts and generalize the good standards everywhere.

I'm surprised about no IFE at all, I know some of the AB6s have teeny-tiny PTVs but I think they must be the ex-Emirates ones.

Nice report, sure is a contrast from your A319LR report (service/comfort-wise)!

I prefer the nice experience to fly on an Airbus A319ER than in an Airbus A300-600 of Tunis Air.

Iran Air. And if I'm not wrong, AA has a daily flight operated with AB6 equipment from JFK to LHR.

Thanks for the pics. Really interesting.

Regards,

Gerard

Yeah I think that's right... does anyone know where these ones fly to? And do they actually use the tiny screens?

Tunisair AB6s are ex-Emirates !

TS-IPA/B/C mainly fly to ORY, MRS, MAD, JED, IST, DUS as well as some charter flights from DJE and MIR. They also serve as back-up aircrafts, so you could see them in LIS, ALG, TIP, MXP... and the whole TU network !

AFAIK the tiny PTVs are operative !
