Ahhh home at last after a well deserved vacation. This is part two of my trip.

HP 777 BWI-LAS
B757-225, N907AW, Seat 24A.
I ended up at the airport a little more than 2 and a half hours before flight time b/c we decided not to get dinner, something I would later regret. The check-in line was non-existent, the last flight to Phoenix was just about to leave and the flight to Columbus was departing in less than half an hour. After checking in I headed up to the gate area in the international pier to kill 2+ hours, when I should have gotten something to eat. At the time both Aer Lingus and Icelandair were getting ready for departure. My flight was late getting in. The plane must have been delayed somewhere back down the line. But by 9:30pm (scheduled for 8:55pm) we pushed back and tookoff.

Now this flight was jam packed full of folks heading out for a week of fun in Las Vegas. I don't think I have ever been stuck in a plane with so many lesuire travelers before... I do prefer flying with business traveler types, smaller carry-ons and they are quieter. The plane was the Phoenix Suns livery and had the old interior. The first thing I noticed was that there was no lav at 2R, instead all three coach lavs were mid-cabin by the emergency exit doors. I had never seen this before on the HP 757s I've flown, or at least never noticed it. I'd like to think this ex-Eastern bird was unique in that manner. I was disappointed however by the fact that there was no meal service. But then again it was a 9pm departure and out of the normal meal time. Two drink services were offered with the little packets of snack mix. I do think that America West should consider offering those snack packs on long-haul non-meal flights. I think 4 and a half hours certainly warrants it. But I guess it did not help that I had a headache and hadn't eaten since 1 that afternoon.

I have never been to Las Vegas before and not really motivated to go back. Sure the lights were all pretty, but my first thought after stepping off of my flight from Baltimore and stepping into the terminal was, "god this place is trashy." LAS really does have slot machines in the terminal... right in the middle of the circular sections of the A gates. Why you cannot wait till you get to the hotel to gamble I will never know.

I had about 30 minutes to catch my flight, enough time to visit the john and make it to the gate. This plane was still in the old colors and had the old interior. Which I really do think has to go. On my outbound flight in ship #307 with the new interior really seemed much nicer and roomier. But this was a red-eye packed full of people returning from vacation, so no drink service for the hour hop down to Tucson. The plane was full, I was tired, I don't think a Ginger Ale would have helped, but maybe it would have helped to wash down some Tylenol.

Overall I got from point A to B. It was just a long day. I don't think I want to connect through Las Vegas again, which helps me avoid the red-eyes. But terminal 4 in Phoenix is so much nicer. Much roomier, free of slot machines, and more attractive. HP should redo their gate space with the "Flintstone" wall treatments they have in Phoenix... much nicer looking.

Great part II of the report.

I agree about HP on long-hauls.... Then again, most airlines don't serve a meal in the coach cabin on flights of that length at that time of night. I prefer to travel with business travelers as well.... normally better attired, better behaved, and quieter on board (except for the ones who drink the whole flight).

I like the idea of three lavs midcabin.... breaks up the long tube a little better.

The America West terminal at LAS is trashy. It is dingy, old, and tacky. Terminal D is much nicer, however.

I will have to agree that LAS is pretty trashy, at least the HP section. And those slot machines, I know its Las VEgas, but come on! As for the meal service, having not taken HP long haul, I guess the time was the reason. But a small snack bag could have been nice. If I remember corectly NW gives meals on 8PM departures out of DTW to PHX. Do you know if First Class got anything on the trip? Nice report....

I have to agree with you Desertjets that LAS is trashy I try to avoid working flights to LAS. Was there a reason why you did not get a beverage service on the LAS-TUS segment??? that is a beverage/tidbit service flt.
I am very curious as why there was no beverage service conducted.
I am sorry about your BWI-LAS flight not getting any food those late night flights are not designated meal service flights because of the time. Most airlines feel that most customers should have already had dinner that evening. HP use to serve a small sandwich or pizza in first class on those late night flights but did away with that service to re-allocate that money to upgrade the first class and main cabin meals on all designated meal service flts.

After realizing how late I would be getting home I had REALLY wished I would have taken one of the earlier flights to Phoenix. Not only would I have gotten home much earlier, but I wouldn't have to deal with the Lost Wages crowd. As a somewhat regular passenger on America West I MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer Phoenix as a connecting point, even when I am flying out of Tucson. Compared to Vegas, DFW, Houston, or Cleveland... Phoenix is very nice. I guess I am also biased because it is also home.

A320FA... Don't know why there was no drink service. There was some light chop enroute but nothing that would seem to warrant halting beverage service. Could the fact that it was a red-eye have anything to do with it?

If anything Las Vegas is probably the busiest airport, at least at 11 o'clock at night. I usually expect terminals to be dead at that time of night. But with that entire bank of night flights it is a happening place.

Plus by the time I got to Tucson I saw more airliners on the ground (that would be flying the next day) than I have ever seen. Including my plane there were 18 planes overnighting... bear in mind there are about 60 departures at TUS.

I am sorry but the FA's should have conducted a beverage service there are only two cities that we do not conduct a beverage service as you know PHX-TUS-PHX and LAS-ONT-LAS. If it was due to bad turbulent weather they should have advised the customers.

Otherwise you should have gotten a beverage.
