Our flight for JFK left BKK at nearly 1:00 AM, and since we had no where to go all day, (Hotel Check Out was at noon) we arrived to the airport eight hours early. While it does have it's technical flaws such as air conditioning (freezing in one spot, hot in another) BKK is absolutely huge and amazing, and utilizes multi-floor open air concepts.
Once we passed through departing immigrations we entered concourse D, the main concourse at BKK. Concourse D had to levels which was very interesting. The top level was exclusively for shops and restaurants, with an amazing selection (taking about 10-15 minutes to walk the entire concourse in length), while the lower level is devoted to gates where you clear security.
Along the concourse there were many Buddhist pagodas and shrines which looked amazing.
After spending about 4 hours walking through concourse D, shopping, and eating here and there, we proceeded to our concourse (E) where we cleared security.
In contrast to the shopping area of Concourse D, Concourse E was empty. In addition, there were absolutely no shops or restaurants once we passed through security into the air side area.
What was interesting about the concourse was that Departing passengers walked on an elevated walkway above the gates while arriving passengers would walk on the same level as the gates (where they would then clear customs/ immigrations)
We were not allowed to go down to the gate just yet as we had to clear a second security check point first, which didn't occur until a half hour before boarding. So I sat on a bench on the elevated walkway for about two and a half hours. The entire setup seemed very stupid as there were only bathrooms and large seating areas at the gates, so most people had to stand for a while until we cleared security again, which was pointless as everything they scanned for at the first checkpoint, was scanned for again at the second one.
We finally boarded the plane which was in tip top condition as it had been before, everyone provided with a water bottle, pillow, and blanket.

The plane, again took off with little waiting only a little after schedule.
We were then provided with our menus:
The first meal was given right after take off, which was a weird time, but none the less it was plenty like usual and very good.
The options were Stir-fried Flat Rice noodles and soy sauce with egg and pork Kailan and Black Mushroom OR Stuffed Ravioli with Spinach, Ricotta, Sun dried Tomato, and Zucchini in Light Cream Sauce.
I chose the Ravioli which also came with Mixed Green Salad with French Dressing, Chocolate Pralines, Tea and Coffee (which is provided after every meal on THAI)
Afterwards I watched a movie and fell asleep for about 4 hours. After waking up I watched the sun rise, saw another movie and was given our second meal (Breakfast) ???
Chinese Young Chau with Prawns Chicken Sausage, Stir-fried Oriental Vegetables OR Roasted Duck with Gravy and Dark Soy Sauce Yellow Noodles and Taiwanese Cabbage
I chose the duck which also came with Passion Fruit Infused Fruit Salad Oolong Tea Jelly/ Fruit Yogurt, as well as Roll, Croissant, Muffin, Butter, Jam, Tea, coffee, Ovaltine.
Shortly after our second meal we flew over the north pole, and as we approached Canada, I was able to see the sun set over the arctic:
I then watched three more movies (lots of movies...) and had a snack, Cup of Noodles
I then watched the sun rise (For the second time!) as we approached the United States and New York.
We were given our final, and largest meal, which I think was breakfast again???
We were given the choice of Paupiette of Capon with Tarragon Sauce Linguine Noodles with Tomato, Sauteed Mixed Vegetables OR Pan-fried Sea Bass with Chinese Hot Red Sauce Oriental Fried Rice, Sauteed Mixed Vegetables
I chose the Capon (Chicken) and was also given Salad of Tender Kenya Beans and Prawns with Tomato Confetti, Bread Roll, Butter, Cheese / Fresh Fruits Panna Cotta with Apricot Sauce and Cherries.
Once again we had a flawless landing at around 6:30 AM, which brought an end to my two week vacation to the other side of the world.
Overall my experience with Thai was amazing, the best air travel experience I have ever had. The service was great, very friendly and personal, the food was fantastic for coach, the seats were comfortable (36" seat pitch) and the entertainment was outstanding.
While the flight was long, I would suggest anyone flying to Southeast Asia to take the New York Express on Thai, as it has great service and is MUCH MUCH cheaper than the competition at roughly $1,000 per person r/t (great deal)

That is indeed a great deal, but TG is rarely the cheapest option JFK-BKK r/t. They're normally about $150 more than carriers offering one or two stop routings. So, you really lucked out with that fare!
I enjoyed your report very much, and I'm impressed by the quality and quantity of the food served. TG used to advertise First Class catering even in Economy--looks like that hasn't changed!

I really want to fly on this flight or the SQ flight from EWR just to say that I have been on one of the lomgest flights in the world

Quoting Ronerone (Reply 5): TG's cabin looks so colorful and inviting. This is definitely one airline on my 'to-fly' list.
Absolutely, TG is first class!
Quoting Ronerone (Reply 5): Perhaps the best way to really experience the full service potential of an airline is to fly them on ULR flights

I flew Thai last year JFK-BKK and have to say it was "the best" inflight experience i've ever had. I have flown all the major European carriers and SAA and Cathay Pacific and Thai takes the prize. There A340-500's are incredibly quiet. At 17 hrs nonstop it beats stopping in NRT or ICN along the way.

Many thanks for sharing! I am truly impressed by the meals served. Actually I haven't seen either a full-size tray or proper glasses in economy for a long time.

Sawasdee Coal.
This is an excellent trip report.
I have a friend here in San Francisco that wants to visit Thailand and I am trying to convince him that Thai Airways International is the the best way to Thailand, even in coach.
I've only flew Thai Airways International First Class between Bangkok to Hong Kong.
Their First class was the best I've ever experienced so it's safe to say they have the best coach as well.

Thanks for the report. Having flown this flight before in late 2004, it is nice to see how the quality of service has held up. TG definitely provides a good quality service although sadly their tickets for the NY and LA express flights are more expensive when purchased here in Bangkok.
Quoting COERJ (Thread starter): Along the concourse there were many Buddhist pagodas and shrines which looked amazing
Not to be nit-picky, but these are not Buddhist pagodas or shrines pictured here. The first picture is a sala, a pavillion (in this case a royal pavillion for functions with members of the Thai royal family) and the second is a sculpture of a Hindu legend called the "Churning of the Milk Sea".

I just read in another forum that TG will sell it's 340-500's, scrap it's BKK-JFK-BKK flights and cut it's BKK-LAX-BKK flights to 5 a week instead of 7, because of spiralling fuel costs. I always thought those US flights would be money makers, becasuse most people prefer a nonstop flight. Before the nonstops, between BKK and LAX with the 747-400 a stop in KIX or NRT was necessary. And, I remember in 1984 when TG flew between BKK-DFW. They used a 747-200 and made a stop in NRT and SEA.
I've only flown TG once NRT-BKK, and it was very nice, but I prefer JL or NH. And BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport, while an interesting place, and especially architecturally, in my opinion is not the best place for aircraft spotting. Plus, the 2 trips I made to BKK involved very long walks between the terminal and the gate. Still, there was a mecca of shops. But if I want to spend a day aircraft spotting, LAX, NRT, LHR or JFK would be my choices

Great report; food looks great too. A real pity to see that this flight is about to be axed, due to high fuel costs (and presumably low loads); what were the loads like on your flights?
A real pity too because this means the end of TG's A340-500s, the best looking airplane in the sky - in the most attractive livery.
