Jakarta (CGK) ¡V Kuala Lumpur (KUL)

Flight: Malaysia Airlines MH710
Aircraft: A330-300
Rego: 9M-MKF
ETD:1110
ATD:1110
ETA:1410
ATA:1410
Seat: 2A (Golden Club / Business Class)
Cruise: 40,000 feet

Background for the trip

After almost a whole year of working hard and mostly traveling for work, I decided its way overdue to get back home to Perth for some rest and relaxation. The reason for the odd routing via BKK is due to the fact that I had unused portions on my TG ticket from my trips last year, so why not just finish it up. This routing will take me from Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Perth, Kuala Lumpur and then back to Jakarta

Pre Flight

Not much pics taken as I have done the CGK-KUL run so many times! But I still will write a brief report on this. Managed to arrive at the airport 1 hour before ETD. Check in was fast and efficient and done in under 2 mins! Then it¡¦s a matter of paying the fiscal tax and then its off to fast track immigration and the lounge. It was a pretty quiet morning in CGK. At airside, we also bumped into some friends who were going back to Perth but with GA.

MKF ready to take me to KUL

In Flight

Nice and very warm greetings when I stepped aboard the aircraft. Some of the crew recognized me and I guess they should as I travel this route so frequently.
On Board in J

Lunch for the day

Nothing fantastic, but does the job of keeping my tummy filled

9M-MKF usually does the CGK runs together with 9M-MKE. This is probably my 8th time on 9M-MKF. The flight itself was pretty uneventful, but I really do hope they roll out the refurbished interiors on the A333¡¦s soon. Seats still comfortable in J, but definitely looking its age. One point to note was the f/a had a different twist when its time for lunch, she said,¡¨So will you be joining us for lunch today?¡¨ Very nice touch indeed. This is one of the many reasons why I think MH has the best inflight crew, especially in J.

ATD:2010
ETA:2115
ATA:2120
Seat: 11K (Royal Silk / Business Class)
Cruise: 34,000 feet

Pre Flight

As usual we spent the couple of hours we had in KL meeting up a friend and going for a quick meal before heading back to KL Sentral to board the KLIA Express train. I got to the airport a little late, but still made it though, I was probably one of the last to check in for the flight. I didn¡¦t bother asking for the loads on this flight as everytime I am on it, its 100% full! After clearing immigration, I went to the duty free to get some cigarettes and a bottle of whiskey for a friend in Perth. I really hate carrying stuff with me, but for a friend, why not, although that¡¦s not the end of this story, more to unfold regarding the whiskey later! After my purchase, there was only time to either go to the Royal Silk Lounge, or for a cigarette. For those of you that know me, I picked the latter!

In Flight

Usual B772 for this short hop to BKK, and as predicted 100% full loads in J and Y, as many of the people on this flight have onward connections to European destinations.

Retrofitted interior in J

Great Legroom (although nothing beats MH¡¦s legroom in J)

I also know that many people are also on standby, but I knew that their chances are as good as ¡¥0¡¦. Crew on board are unassuming but I guess its already expected of TG on their regional J routes! At least they carried their work out efficiently and at least this a/c also has the upgraded J seats. But I still reckon they could be better with more width! But with AVOD, the time really passed in an instant and soon enough we were on descent to BKK.

Whats for dinner?

Just leaving the gate

Browsing through the AVOD just before dinner

Appetizer (note, on TG they still mix the old and new Royal Silk Silverware!!!!)

How cheap looking is that tin foil thingy!!

ATD:2341
ETA:0705
ATA:0730
Seat: 12A (Royal Silk / Business Class)
Cruise: 41,000 feet

Pre Flight

We spent most of our time in the lounge, my wife settled in reading magazines while I check email and browsed the net. Time passed pretty quick and its time to board our aircraft. There was a pre bag check, then x ray check, and then another check just before the gate, I guess they have to keep people employed huh! Alright, back ti my whisky saga! They took it away from me at the last check before the gate saying that although its in a sealed bag and blah blah blah, ¡§please don¡¦t be angry sir as flight to Australia now forbid any liquids even from duty free¡¨ I was just dumbfounded, and at least the security person begged for forgiveness before she took my whisky away I just got too lazy and tired to argue. Although some passengers were argueing about their bottles of mineral water not being allowed to go onboard the aircraft, well to these people, GET A LIFE! I lost a bottle of whisky in a sealed duty free bag whereas teirs were opened bottles of mineral water. Geez, some people just have the nerve to make a scene although they ultimately end up embarrassing themselves in public!

HS-TEC
[photoid:1242652]

In Flight

I soon settle into my seat, 12A, which will be my sanctuary for the next 7 hours to Perth, the A333 still has nice legroom in J, but the aircraft seats really are way due for upgrading, although not as bad as MH¡¦s A333 fleet.

Comfortable, but pushing it for the 7hr hop to PER

I always love being fed!

TG really killing it now with the cheap amenity kit!

At least they used bone china for this longer leg to PER

Its nice to know tha the B773 will now be used to PER from the end of October onwards, hopefully its going to be on the retrofitted aircraft. As usual this long haul crew is much better than regional J crews although their better J crews tend to be on the A345/6 and B744 fleets. Another full load for TG. I didn¡¦t bother to eat much as after watching maybe the first part of some movie, I fell asleep all the way and just woke up when the aircraft was halfway through its descent into PER.

ATD:1640
ETA:2220
ATA:2130
Seat: 2G (Golden Club / Business Class)
Cruise: 40,000 feet

Pre Flight

Somehow time seem to fly past when you are on holidays and soon enough its time for me to head back to Jakarta to work. Always sad to leave home, but at least I will be on MH in J. After fabulous weather during my 8 days home, it was gloomy on this day of departure. Before leaving to the airport, I just spent my entire morning and afternoon chilling out at home. Got to the airport around 1 hr and 15 mins before my departure. Check in areas extremely full today with TG, SQ, GA, MH and QF all departing at times close to each other, although GA was delayed till 1945 heehehheeh.

Small but cosy, PER airport

By the time I got through immigration and security I had only 30 mins before boarding and I just spent some time taking pics of aircrafts and then rest of the time was spent in the very full Golden Club Lounge.

100% full SQ B772 to SIN

9M-MRI taking me to KUL

TG A333 coming in, by the looks of all the Thai people in the holding area, also another 100% load to PER. I guess it¡¦s a matter of time before TG does daily to PER, no wonder the B773 is being used from Oct onwards on the PER runs.

South African A343 tucked aside, awaiting its evening run to JoBerg

Entrance of the Golden Club Lounge

Inside the Golden Club Lounge

Although it was packed, the single attendant in the lounge still dished out great service and with a great smile.

In Flight

This is my 5th time on 9M-MRI, MH certainly has the best legroom in J and we got a fantastic warm welcome onboard the aircraft with extremely cheerful f/a¡¦s, but of course this is only the usual you will expect from MH, but for other airlines, I can¡¦t speak for them as they tend to take business class customers for granted!

Champagne anyone?

Same J seats like TG, but far more superior legroom, service, catering, etc etc, amenity kit¡K.the list goes on and on, and I do think MH is also better than SQ in J

I really had an overdose of satay on the flight, and the main meal presentation was good,

And from now on, I decided to take pics of the toilet too!

but taste was disappointing, but hey, with the great attention and service you get for the inflight crew, overall its just another fantastic flight by MH.

Scenes from the Gold Club Lounge in KUL

Sorry that no pics were taken in flight as I was so tired by then and just wanted to sleep, as I spent my night at a friends place in KL, naturally I had a major lack of sleep! Anyways as most of you know, due to the frequency of my trip on this sector, there is nothing new to report.

In Flight

Service was great as usual, but there was a slight delay into CGK as we had to perform a missed approach as a Valuair A320 was stuck in the runway!

Delay was only 20 mins, and soon enough I was in my car on the way to the office, yes! The office not home ƒ¼

Hope you guys enjoyed this TR. My next trips are:

Also hope both MH and TG update their A333 products soon.

Hi Rob! ... Thanks so much for the praise...because of people who appreciate the thrills and joys of flying like me and you, thats the very reason why I always write up all my trip reports...I noticed from trip reports that we all can learn from each other's experiences and share good in flight moments so that we know which airline to take or not to take  Smile

My trip next week to Munich and Frankfurt is primarily for work, visitng the Frankfurt Motor Show (although many of my friends said that thats not working ehehhe..but trust me, I got meetings after meetings lined up!)

Thanks again for reading my TR  Smile

It looks like on MH 777's they have "mood lighting" depending on the time of day. I'd love to see that on AA 777's

Yup, for some reason I always see MRI docked in Perth, maybe this is one of the a/c they always use on the PER runs  Smile Aww too bad we missed each other by one day ...maybe we can bump into one another someday ...where are based at anyways?

Have spoken to some TG crew earlier this year when I was on the B773 to ICN, they said that the B773 have already been slated for retrofit ala B772 style. The B773 really have atrocious legroom and recline in J.

Yeah, actually all of MH's refitted fleet has mood lighting even on the B744, but sadly on the refits on TG's B744 and B777's, no mood lighting  Sad

Hmm... I have departed out of Perth at that time frame and the airport looks like it is ready to burst. As much as I would like to say Perth needs a bigger airport, after that rush period the airport is like a ghost town (I keep picturing blues music with blowing dust outside complete with tumbleweed journeying across an empty carpark...).

Looks like all our friends here have a trip report posted. I am unfortunately not in the mood to write one. Nice to read your 'balik kampung' trip report.

Lunch for the day

Did MH offers a special Merdeka menu on any of the sectors? I had it on my recent KUL-CGK trip yesterday. Very Malay inspired and DELICIOUS! It was a recipe marketed as from Tunku (Abdul Rahman Putra, the first Prime Minister aka Malaysia's Father of Independence)'s kitchen.

Quoting ThaiA345 (Thread starter):
One point to note was the f/a had a different twist when its time for lunch, she said,"So will you be joining us for lunch today?" Very nice touch indeed. This is one of the many reasons why I think MH has the best inflight crew, especially in J.

What does she means? Did she invited you to join them for lunch in the galley? Or was she hinting of a private lunch somewhere in downtown Kuala Lumpur?

It happened to me too in the trip I mentioned earlier. I checked in after the gate was closed and thus had to carry the large luggage onboard. By then, I have knew that all LAGs in my belonging would be confiscated. The Immigration officers who handled it were very apologetic and sympathised for me but they have to obey the LAGs ruling and I am very well understood their situation. Well at least, I just got a bottle of shampoo, a conditioner (I have quite a long hair as you can see) and a mouthwash confiscated, not a bottle of whiskey.

A week prior to my HKG flight, I had a day trip to JKT which was less that satisfactory. MACET all the way man... I wanted to slit my wrist on my way to the airport because I just wanted to get home but the traffic was just choked to the seams. For me, having to meet you guys in JKT would mean a leisure trip for me not when I am working. Sometimes I work through all my meals (lunch and tea break) in Jakarta and just have dinner at KFC or McD's in the evening before heading for my flight... Normally by then I am close to fainting.

Great report ThaiA345!

It does appear that MH has an impressive Business Class product (at least on the 744s and 772s). It has been a long time since I have flown with them but I do have fond memories of their service. If only they'd just join Oneworld...

Perth Airport is a diabolical mess nowadays and I always feel a sense of embarrassment when I remember it is the first monument our foreign visitors experience. The late evenings have become particularly bad with the arrival of MH, SQ, QF, TG, BI and GA within a relatively short period. Quarantine when it is that busy is quite an experience as there is insufficient space for people to actually join a queue, instead having to form a moshpit that just moves in the general direction. If only there were just quality music to complete the experience...Nowadays I try to move heaven and earth to be seated in the first row so I can just bolt and make it through ASAP!

I chuckled when I saw the picture taken from your house. It just so happens I have friends who live about 4 or 5 doors down from you in Fr**er Road!

Look forward to more reports from you.

Well, at least we know they are heading the right way towards refitting the whole fleet, I guess where they have started with one, the rest is due to follow! But then again, I guess it will be sometime before PER sees the refit a/c as PER to TG is not a very important sector !!

If only they'd just join Oneworld...

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that, MH is actually trying very hard to get into Skyteam as currently a lot of their code sharing is with KLM and Northwest ....but for some reasons and according to some a.net sources, AF is always reluctant for MH to join  Smile

Yup, for some reason I always see MRI docked in Perth, maybe this is one of the a/c they always use on the PER runs Aww too bad we missed each other by one day ...maybe we can bump into one another someday ...where are based at anyways?

Yeah too bad, we may even have been on the same flights, but probably not realised it haha... I spend my time almost equally between KL, Bkk and Chiangmai, so am also familiar  Smile with some of the TG flights you mention

Cool! ..so when is your next flight? I am leaving tomorrow to MUC and FRA. So how is Chiangmai? Always wanted to go there ....but everytime I am in BKK its only a transit and I dont know why I never ever put time aside to go to Chiangmai!

Chiangmai is best at the end of the year - sunny, dry and quite cool. Much quieter than Bkk of course and a great place to chill out, the Mandarin Oriental's the place to be.
Now back to the planes haha ... TG uses its 744s on at least one - often two - flights a day to C'mai in the winter, that's really been my only opportunity to fly in their F cabin, sold on domestic as C class.
So I presume you're also flying TG again to Germany? I'll be making an European trip too later this month - trying Etihad for the first time... all those flat bed pics on a.net made it irresistable! And it's cheaper too.

So on the 744 to Chiangmai, is it the older config? The ones without AVOD

Yah, actually right now I am at the Sheraton airport in Munich, got an early flight in the morning by LH to FRA, came via MUC coz I wanted to try out the A346 eheheh ..really a great way to fly, not disappointed at all. Reason why I always take TG in my travels is, in F & J cabin, they got good products now, and although I rate SQ and MH above TG, they are also more expensive, plus I like transiting through BKK, great F lounge and J and F passengers also got complimentary spa treatments! Now thats hard to beat ehehehheeh

I also had some friends who flew Etihad and they were all raving about it, only thing is the thought of transitting in Abu Dhabi....oh well, you can't have the best of everything i guess  Sad

Tell next time! I should be posting my TR for this trip by next week...stay tuned !

Great Trip report ThaiA345!

Love the pics. everytime I read a MH Trip report it makes me want to fly them again. I flew them recently in July from Perth and have been spotting this month and each time 9M-MRI was nowhere to be seen so I think it may be a one off with MRI being in Perth 2 days in a row. Which is great which means more chance to see and fly on 9M-MRD.

Then again MRI can provide a good photo op like above (thank god it all ended safely)

I would like to try Thai Airways oneday and your report makes them look pretty good. But you trravel in J and I am always in Y. Their 773 will be a nice change as Thai has been sending Airbus products to Perth for nearly two decades with the A300 and A330. I think Thai might retro fit their 773s as these birds are used for some long sectors such as BKK - ATH. But with their 744s not getting anything of an upgrade then maybe not. I totaly agree that Thai needs a daily service but it is a step in the right direction to incresse capacity to Perth.

Perth airport is overcrwoded and this is not just the domestic side it is the international side too. With QF, TG, MH, SQ and GA operating flgihts in a short space of time things do get cosy. Funny enough it always looks like QF leaves from 52, TG leaves from 53, SQ leaves from 54 and MH leaves from 55, with EK arriving in 52. Your photos confirmed that as well.

I was also hoping for MH to have their A330s upgraded as well. They also send these aircraft to Perth on MH126/127 and they do fly the odd medium haul like Istanbul.

Anyway great reoprt I really enjoyed reading it

Hi Darren! Great to see you enjoyed my TR, sorry I didnt get the time to contact and meet up with ya as my dad in law came along this trip, and being his first time in PER, I had to do the tour guide thing! haahha
Actually if you go to www.thaiairways.com, look for fleet, and seat maps, you can see that 1 B773 has laready been converted, so its a matter of time before the others come online with the new interiors too. But be forwarned! On retrofit aircraft, TG only upgrades their F and J and so Y is still the same, so I would not recommend them, the only a/c worht flying in Y are: B744 (selected, mainly the FRA, London, MAD, and CDG routes), all A345 and A346, and all B772ER only

But the only problem is that the airport is busy only at certain times of the day when the mad rush happens, other than that, the airport is dead :*(

Yah, nice to get the B773 on the route, at least now all SE Asian carrires operate the B777's purely to Perth, except on MH126/127 ehehhee...but the A333 will be upgraded by early next year too  Smile

Thanks again for reading my report.

True but hub airports such as Changi and KLIA also has slow times as well but obviously not as extreme as Perth yet they have built their facilities to cope with the peak periods quite well. Obviously i am not calling for Perth to be as big as those two airports but any good airport plans and expands for the future. i mean the airport is going to be the first and last impression for a visitor to Perth. My colleagues form over east think the the airport is too small and the Qantas terminal is something like a regional airport more suited to somewhere like Wagga Wagga or Coffs Harbour.

Well... Perth Airport has been upgraded time and time again but the size almost remains the same. There is one place that i think has escaped the refurbishment - the viewing gallery! It would be a good location to shoot a movie based on characters with bell bottoms and afro hairdo.

That you are right, ! But I think the main problem is in the immigrations/customs/ and departure lounge, these are the areas which need expanding rapidly, alternatively, use the entire terminal now as a departures area, and build an arrivals building again adjacent to the current building  Smile

Hey Mr Soh, you are right, all refurbishments are only cosmetic and nothing is done regarding the size of the airport, only the departure check in was lengthened by a little. Parking is also now a joke with people parking their cars on the grass and on the curbs! With regards to the viewing gallery, its nothing much anyway so I dont even bother to go there, you get better views from the departure lounge. But what I am most disappointed is that they took away the smoking lounge in the departures area  Sad
