Hey guys! I'm Max!

I'm new to this site - well at least on the forums.

Okay, now onto the report.

Air New Zealand 0059
Auckland, New Zealand -- Nadi, Fiji
B767-300ER
Seat: 1B
Scheduled Departure Time: 15:15
Actual Departure Time: 15:35
Scheduled Arrival Time: 17:20
Actual Arrival Time: 17:15

My parents decided to go for a quick holiday to Fiji since we have never been (We have been everywhere else around the world but Fiji!). They Invite me, and I accepted. At the last minute my sister decided to come as well, but as the business class cabin was full she would have to sit in economy on the way back for this short flight (Not the case in the end).

I fly Emirates every chance I get, but they don't fly to Fiji, and the only other option was to fly Air Pacific - And that is never going to happen...I hope.

I have never been to the Air NZ premium check-in at AKL, and I was in for a surprise! They have there own check-in room for premium passengers! After getting our boarding passes we headed up the private escalator to immigration & security, where everyone but me got 'Beeped' by the metal detector. The staff made some humorous comments while waving that wand-thing up and down there bodies. We were allowed to pass and we headed to the duty free shopping area. Not alot there so we went to the lounge.

The Air NZ lounge was up an escalator, just below the Emirates lounge. The staff greeted us and we headed to the seating area. What a mess! This tired lounge didn't have one pattern to It. At all. The seats were all different, some looked like they had been taking out from someones home! It was an awful mix and considering this was Air NZs hub I though this would be alot better. No comparison to the Emirates lounge.

Just as fast as we went in, we went back out again. We looked around a few shops and then headed for the gate. This flight looked like it was going to be 80% full, as the boarding gate was packed. Once we got on board we were greeted by the flight attendants and took our seats. Once everyone was on-board we were offered water or orange juice for the pre-takeoff drink. 10 minutes passed and we still weren't moving. The captain came on the intercom and said that we were waiting on a member of the crew. 20 minutes passed and the late person, who actually ended up being a normal passenger boarded the plane.

I forgot to take pictures of this flight, but I can say you didn't miss alot. The service on-board was so/so. The meal was average to say the least and IFE was good for a 3 hour flight.

Return flight

Air New Zealand 0853
Nadi, Fiji - Auckland, New Zealand
Airbus A320
Seat: 2A
Scheduled Departure Time: 11:00
Actual Departure Time: 11:00
Scheduled Arrival Time: 14:05
Actual Arrival Time: 14:20

As we said goodbye to Fiji and went to Nadi Airport. Once we arrived we headed to the check-in desk, once there my father asked the man behind the counter to see if there were any seats available in J, he said yes there was one seat left but that it would probably go to a star alliance card holder as there were alot of them flying on this flight. So my father asked the man how much it would cost to upgrade & he sent him to the counter a few rows from him. The lady said it would cost $700.00 for the upgrade. Considering that we paid for three full price J tickets and economy tickets we thought this was to much and should be free, so the lady suggested we ask the staff at the lounge.

After we went through security etc, we made It to the lounge. We asked the staff there about the upgrade and all we got was "No, sorry". The lounge was very small, and couldn't fit anymore people in it. There was a small snack bar with drinks available. Nothing else really happened so we just went to the gate where boarding was about to start. It started with children, families and business class passengers first - or so we thought. Within seconds there was a huge line at check in. I guess people departing from India can relate to this?

When we were walking to the plane I saw this yellow jet, that was In freedom air colors, I just about had a heart attack. Once we got on-board we saw J seats and my frown turned into a smile. My father asked the crew about the upgrade, and the man said to wait after take-off to see what happens. Settling into these seats and I found that these were really comfortable! In fact, I found that they were more so then Emirates A340 first! The attendant that would be serving the 8 J class passengers was called Linda, a delightful lady who once I asked about the skin of the plane, she said it was to commemorate the Freedom air director who died. She also asked If I was interested in planes, and asked do I want to be a pilot, I said yes to both. With a smile she said her son is training to become a pilot and kindly handed me a card with information about the flight school he was at. After take-off the man came up to my mother and said that her husband would be upgraded. We were pleased and my father thanked the attendant. The meal on this flight was the same as the last one - bland and tasteless. We were handed out DVD players with movies we picked from a list.

Even if the meals were bad, this flight was alot better then the one coming In. The journey was bumpy most of the way and more so when we got closer to Auckland. At one point my mother asked the male flight attendant "What is the weather like In Auckland?" He responded "You don't want to know". Once we started to descend things got real rough and It seemed like we were never going to land. As fate would have it we did and I said my goodbyes to Linda (she needs a raise) and the rest of the crew.

Overall my flight with Air New Zealand was average. Both Lounge could use some updating and the food could do with some work. I suggest If you have the option of the 767 or A320, take the A320. I know this is a pacific Island route so things were never going to be that great so I'm okay with it. Thanks to the NAN - AKL crew for upgrading my father! Last but not least - sorry if this seems a bit dull but It is really late when posting this, and I will update it in the morning.

Overall

Air New Zealand 0059
Check In: 10 (Wonderful check-in, this is the only thing that is gets 10 on this flight)
Lounge: 4 (This really needs some updating and try to stick with one color...)
Boarding: 9 (Normal)
Seat: 7 (Alright, could use some updating If Air NZ plans to keep them)
Aircraft: 7 (These are aging aircraft, but I couldn't find a problem with it)
Crew: 7 (Normal crew, nothing over the top)
Meal: 4 (Awful meal, would have expected more from this airline)
Entertainment: 8 (Installed PTV in armrest, If they keep these I hope they upgrade them)

Air New Zealand 0853
Check In: 9 (Normal)
Lounge: 4 (This really needs some updating and try to stick with one color...)
Boarding: 3 (They need to start sending people back who don't follow the normal procedure.)
Seat: 7 (Great seats on the A320, very comfortable )
Aircraft: 9 (A320 looks almost brand new)
Crew: 9 (Great crew on the way out from Nadi, give them a raise! )
Meal: 4 (Awful meal, would have expected more from this airline)
Entertainment: 7 (The DVD players are okay for a three hour flight, and I hear they are installing new ones into the seat)

The 763s and A320s will be getting a PTV and AVOD upgrade soon in all classes. Thanks for sharing, sorry to hear your experience was so/so though.

They are a great airline IMO

Welcome to a.net man, nice report.

What's wrong with Air Pacific? They seem ok, not as 'high tech' as the larger airlines but close.

Yeah the lounge could be a bit bigger and have a bit more variety than muffins and sandwiches. Try being in there when you are on a B744 flight, its so full that I usually leave and sit upstairs in the departure area.

Was that ZK-OJO the loony tunes one?

Cheers

The J class or Suite Seats as they are called on SJ flights are great.

I flew SJ in an Air NZ plane to OOL and paid 60 bucks for the Suite Seat and it was excellent.

Good report.

Qantas, Still calling Australia Home.........

Thanks for the welcome. I'm not sure if it was as the Jetway was blocking the view.  Sad

That design was based on a competition based on Warner Bros theme parks in OOL

I have done AKL-NAN and NAN-SUV with Air Pac......loved it, especially the half-empty 747!!

Boarding: 3 (They need to start sending people back who don't follow the normal procedure.)

There are many valid reasons why a person can be late for a flight...........best not judge them too harshly because one day you may be very glad that they waited for you!!

Are there any plans to increase the J seating on the A320's?
